One day after the 2014 Pulitzer Prizes were announced, a fight broke out Wednesday (April 16th) between The Center for Public Integrity and ABC News over credit for one the awards, which are the most prestigious in journalism.
CPI's Chris Hamby won the Pulitzer for investigative journalism for his reports on how some lawyers and doctors rigged a system to deny benefits to coal miners suffering from black lung disease.
ABC News aired reports on the stories, and is now accusing CPI of downplaying its contributions to the work by omitting the names of ABC reports in the Pulitzer submission.
ABC contends that its reporters shared in the reporting and producing of the stories, but CPI says Hamby did the bulk of the work, particularly for the newspaper reports, and points to the rule that TV news organizations aren't eligible for Pulitzers, which honor newspaper and digital reporting.
A flurry of back and forth statements and letters were sent out yesterday from both organizations, neither of which has yet backed down.
