Pro Football icon Jimmy Johnson, a staple of Fox Sports and the NFL for six decades, has announced his retirement.
Johnson shared the news on Monday’s The Herd with Colin Cowherd, calling it “an extremely difficult decision” he’d mulled over for years. “I’ve decided to retire from Fox,” he said. “I’m going to miss all the guys.”

Johnson’s career splits evenly: 30 years coaching and managing in the NFL, followed by 30 years as a Fox analyst. He coached the Dallas Cowboys to two Super Bowl wins (1989–1993) and later held multiple roles with the Miami Dolphins (1996–1999), including head coach and GM, before joining Fox full-time after leaving coaching in 1999. At Fox, he became a cornerstone of FOX NFL Sunday, blending insight, humor, and swagger. “The most fun I’ve had in my career—counting Super Bowls and national championships—was at Fox Sports,” he said. “I had an absolute ball with my best friends on set.”
Hints of his exit surfaced last month at the 2025 Super Bowl, where a four-minute Fox tribute—narrated by Johnson—left him in tears on air. The segment traced his journey from an Arkansas defensive lineman (digitally recreated via AI) to Cowboys glory and his TV tenure, culminating in an emotional live shot at AT&T Stadium.
LEGEND.

Fox Sports CEO Eric Shanks praised Johnson’s 31-year run, noting his role since FOX NFL Sunday’s 1994 debut. “Jimmy was our coach, pushing us to be better with his pep talks and unmatched energy,” Shanks said. “We’re grateful for his contributions to making our show the top pregame on TV. He’ll be missed as he sails into retirement in true Jimmy Johnson style.”
Johnson, 81, leaves behind a legacy that spans playing, coaching, and broadcasting, with fans and colleagues alike celebrating his outsized impact.
