Disney, Including ABC News, Layoffs Expected Today

Disney is laying off about 200 workers—roughly 6% of the combined staff—at its ABC News Group and Disney Entertainment Networks unit, sources say, with announcements starting Wednesday.

The cuts, part of ongoing reductions at Disney, reflect a shift from traditional operations as the company ramps up spending on sports and streaming content to compete in a changing market. Cable ratings and ad revenue are slipping as viewers and advertisers pivot to streaming and digital platforms.

At ABC News, “20/20” and “Nightline” are merging into a single unit, triggering layoffs, while the political news site 538, with about 15 staffers, is being axed.

All three hours of “Good Morning America” will now fall under one leader, scrapping the separate team for the third hour. Disney Entertainment Networks, home to channels like Freeform and FX, will see cuts in programming and scheduling roles. The industry newsletter Status first flagged the ABC News reductions.
