R.I.P.: Dinah Powers, Former Houston Morning Personality

Dinah Powers
Alternative KTBZ is mourning the loss of one of its own, saying she fought her battle with cancer to the end.  ABC13 reports The Rod Ryan Show first shared the news on Thursday through Twitter that former radio co-host Dinah Powers died.

"It is with unimaginable sadness that I announce the passing of our friend, coworker and my former co-host Dinah Powers," the tweet read. "She was one of a kind and we are all richer for having known her."

Then, in an Instagram post, the show went into more detail about her passing and said Powers was fighting stage 4 uterine cancer that was spreading to her lungs.

Radio personality Rod Ryan also shared one of his last texts with Powers, saying his last text to her was Friday, Nov.13.

"I told her I was thinking about her and I loved her," Ryan said.

Powers co-hosted the Rod Ryan Show on 94.5 The Buzz up until August of 2019. She announced her departure just 10 days before.

Powers shared the news of her battle with uterine cancer at the beginning of October through an Instagram post.

A November update from Powers on a GoFundMe read that she had completed her first round of chemotherapy at the beginning of the month. Powers added that she was going to start another round of treatment in mid-November.

Nov 20 Radio History

➦In 1907...actress Fran Allison was born in Iowa. She played the folksy tale-telling Aunt Fanny for decades on ABC radio’s Don McNeill’s Breakfast Club.  On TV she was a co-star (with Burr Tillstrom & his puppets) on Kukla Fran & Ollie.

She died of bone marrow failure June 13 1989 at age 81.

➦In 1928…WGH-AM in Newport News, Virginia began signed-on.  The WGH call letters were not used from 9/1/83 to 12/10/84.

The earliest ancestor of WGH Radio was WPAB, granted a license by the Radio Division, Bureau of Navigation, United States Department of Commerce on December 4, 1926.  The licensee was the Radio Corporation of Virginia in Norfolk.  On December 6, 1926, WPAB signed on the air at 1040 kilocycles with a power of 100 watts.  WPAB later became WRCV and broadcast programming mostly of a religious nature.

In January 1927, the Radio Corporation of Virginia put another station on the air, WSEA, which transmitted on the frequency of 1370 kilocycles with a power of 500 watts.  In April 1927 WSEA began broadcasting from the brand new Cavalier Hotel in Virginia Beach but was dark by the middle of 1928, the Radio Corporation of Virginia having gone bankrupt.  WSEA, however, had one shining moment on June 10, 1927 when Norfolk Mayor S. Heth Tyler became the first American to extend coast to coast radio congratulations to aviator Charles Lindbergh after his successful solo flight from New York to Paris.  Lindbergh heard the message on WSEA as he was passing over the Cape Henry Lighthouse.

Tom Little moved the WSEA allocation to Newport News and changed the call letters to WNEW (signifying its new city of license, Newport News) on August 8, 1928.  Facilities were in the Tidewater Hotel at 2400 Washington Avenue in Newport News.  The studio was on the ground floor, directly behind the front desk and switchboard for the hotel, and the transmitter and antenna were on the top floor.  Shortly thereafter  a new licensee, Hampton Roads Broadcasting Company, changed the frequency  to 1430, and government authorization came through on October 8, 1928.

The WNEW calls lasted for only a few weeks, when they were changed to WGH ("World's Greatest Harbor").  It was also among the first 100 radio stations on the air in the United States.  By 1928, however, the station was gone and the available WGH call letters were requested by Hampton Roads Broadcasting.  An application to the Federal Radio Commission was approved on November 19 of that year and the station began identifying itself as "WGH" the next day.

In early 1959, a new era was ushered in with a switch to "Top-40" programming under the "Color Radio" banner.  Late 1950's performers included Jim Stanley, Jack Fisher, Lou Nelson, Dick Lamb, Jack Krueger, Frank Drake, Bob Calvert, Dean Collins (who went on to WPGC in Washington as Dean Griffith and later to New York as Dean Anthony, one of the WMCA "Good Guys"), Don Owens, Roger Clark, Bob Calvert's alter ego (and the inspiration for Wolfman Jack) "Baron Bebop", Throckmorton Quiff, and Gene Creasy.  Early newscasters included Ed Meyer, Dick Kidney, Pete Glazer, Bud Buhler and Art Merrill.

By 1960, the station was broadcasting at 5,000 watts from a non-directional daytime tower at the Newport News Small Boat Harbor, switching to the three-tower directional site in Hampton during the evening hours. Today, WGH operates with 20,000 watts by day and 5,000 watts at night.

➦In 1929… The radio program "The Rise of the Goldbergs," first aired with Gertrude Berg as Molly, was heard on the NBC Blue radio network. Later, the title would be shortened to The Goldbergs. Mrs. Berg, incidentally, wrote the first scripts for the 15-minute program and starred in the show — for $75 a week. The program continued until 1945 (it returned for one more radio season in 1949-1950).  The show also aired on TV first on CBS, then NBC, the Dumont Network, and syndication – between 1949 and 1956.

➦In 1940..The iHeartMedia FM station now known as WRVE in Albany NY has a much longer history as one of the nation's pioneering FM radio stations. A by-product of the station being owned by General Electric with similarly pioneering sisters WGY (AM) and WRGB (TV), WRVE traces its history to W2XDA Schenectady and W2XOY New Scotland, New York - two experimental frequency modulation transmitters on 48.5 MHz, which signed on in 1939. The two were merged into one station with the W2XOY call-letters on November 20, 1940 with the station then taking the W57A designation, and finally the long-running WGFM call-letters in the mid-1940s.

The station eventually settled on 99.5 MHz when the FM band was relocated to the 88-108 MHz portion of the radio spectrum.

On June 1, 1961 at 12:01 AM (EDT), WGFM became the first FM station in the United States to broadcast in stereo.

➦In 1954...when his career as America’s most successful singing cowboy was almost over, Gene Autry appeared for the first time on radio’s “Grand Ole Opry.”

Autry was easily the most popular country singer of the 1930’s and ’40s, with such hits as “Silver Haired Daddy of Mine,” “South of the Border” and “Tweedle-O-Twill.” Autry’s trio of million-selling children’s records — “Here Comes Santa Claus,” “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” and “Peter Cottontail” — were recorded in the late ’40s.

➦In 1955...Sun Records owner and producer Sam Phillips sells Elvis Presley's contract to RCA for $35,000.  Elvis received $13,500 of the total.

➦In 1959… Early rock-n-roll personality Alan Freed was fired from New York's WABC 770 AM after refusing to sign a statement saying he had never accepted "payola" or gifts from record labels in exchange for airplay, a move that triggered his eventual downfall.  This was about two years before it evolved into one of America's great Top 40 stations by launching its "Musicradio" format.

Cathy Lewis
➦In 1968..radio actress and Spokane native Cathy Lewis died of cancer at age 50. Half of “the first couple of radio” (with husband Elliot Lewis) she was featured as Jane Stacy on My Friend Irma on both radio & TV.  She was one of the most oft-used stars on CBS radio’s Suspense series.  When Fibber McGee & Molly came (briefly) to TV, she was cast as Molly.

➦In 1994…Former KFWB-AM morning host, Bruce Hayes, died.

In 1958, the original "Seven Swingin’ Gentlemen" turned KFWB into a rock & roll powerhouse in Los Angeles. Under new owners Crowell-Collier Broadcasting, program director Chuck Blore pioneered the Top 40 format on AM 980, calling it Channel 98 Color Radio. KFWB became one of the most listened-to stations in the Southland and a leader in the Top 40 format around the country.

The air staff during the glory days included Roger Christian (songwriter), Bill Ballance, B. Mitchel Reed, Bruce Hayes, Al Jarvis, Joe Yocam, Elliot Field, Ted Quillin and Gene Weed.

Hourly updates were delivered by a staff of respected newscasters, including Cleve Herrmann, Charles Arlington, John Babcock, Beach Rogers, Mike Henry, Hal Goodwin, Al Wiman, Bill Angel, J. Paul Huddleston and Jackson King.

In the mid-1960s, KFWB was overtaken by rival KRLA. Then KRLA was put in second place by the launch of "Boss Radio" at KHJ, and this relegated KFWB to the position of the third-place Top 40 music station in the L.A. market.

Hayes also worked at KDAY, 1962; KHJ, 1963-64; KFWB, 1965-67; KFI, 1969.

➦In 2000...organist Gaylord Carter died of Parkinson’s at age 95.  Born in Wiesbaden Germany, his family moved to the US when he was a child.  He became active in playing music for bigtime radio, notably “Hollywood Hotel”, “The Packard Show”, “The Second Mrs. Burton”, and “Breakfast In Hollywood”. Carter will always be associated in the public mind with “The Amos & Andy Show”.  For seven years on radio he introduced the show by playing its theme, “The Perfect Song”.  After the war he played for both radio & TV, including “Bride & Groom”, “The Big Payoff”, and “The Pinky Lee” TV show.

➦In 2004…Longtime Toronto radio personality Tom Rivers died of cancer at the age of 57.  In the 90’s he had several gigs in Edmonton, and a talk show on Calgary’s CHQR.

LI Radio: Ex-Manager Admits To Defrauding Thousands

Stephanie Bitis
The former general manager of Long Island Radio Broadcasting has admitted to making hundreds of thousands of dollars of personal charges on the business account.

58-year-old Stephanie Bitis, of Sag Harbor, pleaded guilty on Monday, Nov. 16, in federal court to felony access device fraud, according to dailyvoice.com citing court documents.

Bitis’ crime carries a maximum sentence of imprisonment of 15 years, a fine of up to $250,000, and forfeiture of any proceeds from her crime.  She is scheduled to be sentenced on March 26, 2021.

The longtime resident and community activist served as Vice President/General Manager of LIRB from 2015 to 2017. Long Island Radio Broadcasting includes 102.5 WBAZ, 101.7 WBEA, 92.9/96.9 WEHM, She had previously worked at CBS Corporation.

Following years of lackluster financial results, she was terminated, said Lauren Stone, owner of the radio station.

A suspicious wire transfer caused Stone to review the company’s American Express statements for the preceding six months, she said After noticing several charges that appeared fraudulent, Stone engaged an outside law firm to conduct an investigation into the radio station’s financials.

The investigation found that Bitis had purchased hundreds of thousands of dollars of personal charges on LIRB’s corporate American Express card, Stone said.

Among other things, Bitis charged a family vacation to Aruba, personal visits to the orthodontist, boat maintenance and boat fuel, and even tax services for delinquent personal income tax payments. Stone said.

She concealed her fraud by submitting falsified documents to LIRB’s accountant. She went so far as to create her own bogus American Express statements, removing vendors such as her orthodontist to hide the personal charges, Stone added.

Nielsen Unveils Cookieless ID Resolution System

Nielsen today unveiled its ID resolution system that will underpin its audience and outcomes measurement products in a cookieless world to support cross-media, including digital. Consistent with its mission of providing trusted and independent measurement, Nielsen will continue to deliver holistic, people-based measurement across all platforms and publishers and deduplicate devices, content and ad exposure even as existing identifiers can no longer be relied upon.

To combat the issue of data erosion and prepare for an increasingly fragmented future, Nielsen is advancing its technology to deliver differentiated measurement and outcomes data to the industry. The move to people-based data sets trained and calibrated by Nielsen's panel truth set and underpinned by identity will best position the company and allow for true cross-channel measurement. With this new ID methodology, advertisers can maintain confidence that when an ad is viewed by an individual, the audience count is accurately deduplicated and measured across all platforms including mobile, PC and television and demographics and outcomes are validated accordingly.

Accuracy is paramount for measurement and outcomes. Unlike the ID resolution used for targeting, IDs used for measurement must be consistent and persistent across platforms, publishers and devices to ensure audience behavior and preferences are observed with accuracy and precision. Nielsen ID utilizes persistent, device-agnostic identifiers that have been validated against its high-quality panel truth sets, enabling Nielsen to verify demographic characteristics and viewership over time across all media.

To reconcile various first party IDs and replace third party cookies across the digital ecosystem, Nielsen will work with The Trade Desk and the industry on Unified ID 2.0, an open and interoperable ID built on hashed and encrypted email addresses. It will provide a framework for interoperability between the Nielsen ID and Nielsen's direct integrations across platforms and publishers, enabling Nielsen to deliver comprehensive and comparable measurement.

Mainak Mazumdar
"By underpinning our audience and outcomes measurement products with our unique ID resolution methodology, we are futureproofing our business and products from ongoing technology and regulatory changes," said Mainak Mazumdar, Chief Data Officer at Nielsen. "Backed by Nielsen's gold-standard panels, we are building the blocks for a privacy centric, flexible approach to measuring individuals' exposure to ads across all media to power the media industry well into the future."

To build its comprehensive solution, Nielsen is utilizing a variety of data, direct integrations and new technologies as well as its measurement-specific identity graph. The company continues to evolve the foundation of its people-based measurement by leveraging machine learning models to expand measurement.

Nielsen's ID resolution system comprises:

➤Ecosystem Connectivity: Direct integrations with publishers and advertisers to  access information associated with actual people and the devices they use over time, and don't depend on device IDs or the browser/app ecosystem.

➤Nielsen ID: Nielsen will utilize its panels to correct biases and drive comparability, and combine data across various data sources in a privacy-centric manner to link people to households and devices to support measurement.

➤Machine Learning Models: Proprietary machine learning models that integrate and enrich data across environments to ensure accuracy, comparability and representation in measurement and outcomes products.

As Nielsen combines linear and addressable TV and digital data assets onto a single platform, the ID methodology will scale the holistic measurement across all premium video across all media. On the heels of its digital transformation, the company has reimagined its offerings to ensure the flexibility to adapt to ongoing changes in the technology and privacy landscape. Nielsen's ownership of the technology stack, data science expertise, back-end infrastructure and data sources will allow the company to maintain independence and approach ID resolution with a resilient system that can ingest new datasets as the industry evolves and new sources become available.

Nielsen is actively working with the MRC to review the new resolution methodology to ensure it meets the standards for audience measurement. Nielsen will begin its phased approach to rolling out the ID resolution system in the U.S. beginning early Q1 2021. Its next generation methodology for measurement will flow into Digital Ad Ratings, Total Ad Ratings, Digital Content Ratings, Total Content Ratings, Digital in TV Ratings, Nielsen Attribution and Nielsen Campaign Lift.

The AM Rundown: U-S Passes 250K Coronavirus Deaths

The U.S. passed 250,000 deaths from the coronavirus on Wednesday, as it continues to surge across the country with nearly every state reporting an increase in new daily cases compared to this time last week. Cases, hospitalizations and deaths are continuing to rise, with the COVID Tracking Project reporting daily stats yesterday of some 164,000 new cases and 1,869 deaths, the highest daily death toll since May 7th. It also reported a record 79,000 people currently hospitalized, a figure that doubled in the past month, straining overwhelmed hospitals and health care workers. Governors and mayors have been issuing new restrictions, including some who were reluctant to do so in the past, among them the suspension of in-person classes yesterday in New York City, the nation's largest school system, as the city's infection rate reached three percent.

Pfizer Says Vaccine 95 Percent Effective: In continued good news about coronavirus vaccines, Pfizer said yesterday that new test results show its vaccine is 95 percent effective -- even higher than the 90 percent it had said last week from more preliminary data. The results also show that it's safe and protects older people, who are most at risk of dying from Covid-19. That data allows Pfizer and partner BioNTech to seek emergency use of limited supplies of the vaccine, which it's preparing to ask for within days from U.S. regulators.
➤CDC SUGGESTS AMERICANS DITCH SINGING, LOUD MUSIC, ALCOHOL, FOR HOLIDAYS DUE TO PANDEMIC: The holidays will be a lot quieter this year if you follow the latest guidelines suggested by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Published yesterday, the organization says to minimize the spread of COVID-19, people should avoid singing or shouting (especially indoors), avoid close contact with others from outside one's household (you still should be socially distancing, keeping six feet apart), and avoid drinking alcohol. The CDC also warns against drinking as, “Using alcohol or drugs that may alter judgement [could] make it more difficult to practice COVID-19 safety measures.” And if you can’t avoid having a holiday gathering, the organization recommends wearing face masks and having hand sanitizers or hand washing stations available for guests. Quarantining for 14 days before and/or after the event has also been suggested to minimize exposing others to the virus.

➤SURVEY: HOLIDAY SHOPPERS PLAN TO SPEND LESS THIS YEAR: Holiday shoppers plan to spend less this year than they did in 2019, and the coronavirus pandemic and related economic uncertainty seems to be behind it. The nationwide Debt.com survey found that 62 percent of respondents said they plan to spend less on holiday spending this year. Some 40 percent said it's because of the loss of a job or a reduction in income, 37 percent said it's because they expect their loved ones will also be cutting down on their holiday spending amid the pandemic, and 23 percent felt there's less pressure to buy gifts with virtual holiday celebrations. But Debt.com chairman Howard Dvorkin suspects those results might not turn out to be true, stating, "Every year, people go into the holidays with the best intentions. The problem is they get carried away." He also suggested that cost-saving measures related to the pandemic, along with the temporary suspension of some debt payments, could egg on a desire to spend too much in order to make others happy, particularly after many months of being apart from family and friends.

➤TRUMP FILES FOR RECOUNT OF TWO WISCONSIN COUNTIES: President Trump filed yesterday for a recount of the vote in the two largest Democratic counties in Wisconsin, a state President-elect Joe Biden won by some 20,600 votes, or 0.7 percent, and paid the required $3 million cost for the recount to be done. The request claimed Milwaukee and Dane counties were the location of the, quote, "worst irregularities," however there has been no evidence of voter fraud or impropriety. A Biden campaign spokesman said that a, quote, "cherry-picked and selective recounting of Milwaukee and Dane County" won't change his Wisconsin win. The recounts will begin Friday and must be completed by December 1st. As Trump continues to try to legally challenge the vote certification in several swing states that Biden won, the Washington Post yesterday cited several Trump advisers as saying his real goal is, quote, "sowing doubt in Biden’s victory with the president’s most ardent supporters and keeping alive his prospects for another presidential run in 2024."

➤JUDGE BLOCKS TRUMP POLICY OF TURNING AWAY CHILDREN AT BORDER DUE TO PANDEMIC: A federal judge yesterday blocked a Trump administration policy instituted as an emergency decree since March that turns away migrant children at the southern U.S. border before they can claim asylum, treating them as public health risks because of the coronavirus pandemic. Judge Emmet G. Sullivan ruled that the expulsion of thousands of children without due process exceeded the authority given by public health emergency decrees. Sullivan's ruling doesn't apply to adults or families crossing the border. It is unclear if the administration will appeal.

➤FAA CLEARS BOEING 737 MAX PLANE TO FLY AGAIN, 20 MONTHS AFTER GROUNDING: The Federal Aviation Administration yesterday (November 18th) cleared Boeing's 737 Max to fly again, 20 months after the planes were grounded around the world in March 2019 following two fatal crashes within five months. The crashes of the Ethiopian Airlines and Indonesia's Lion Air jets killed a total of 346 people. U.S. airlines will fly the 737 Max planes again once Boeing updates critical software and computers and pilots get training on them in flight simulators. Both the FAA and Boeing came under criticism in the wake of the crashes, with the FAA accused of lax oversight and Boeing of rushing a new software system, putting profits over safety. The anti-stall software was the focus of blame in both crashes and has been overhauled.

➤CHARLIE BROWN THANKSGIVING, CHRISTMAS SPECIALS TO AIR ON BROADCAST TV AFTER ALL: There was an outcry last month after it was revealed that Apple TV+ had acquired the rights to the classic Peanuts TV specials and that they wouldn't be airing on broadcast TV for the first time in 55 years. Apple said it would let people stream them for free for a few days around the holidays, but that didn't tamp down the backlash. So Apple has now given in, announcing yesterday that it had joined with PBS for ad-free broadcasts of the beloved shows. It was too late for It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown to be shown on TV before Halloween, but PBS will air A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving on November 22nd and A Charlie Brown Christmas on December 13th. They will be still also be available to stream for free on Apple TV+ during three-day windows from November 25 to 27th for Thanksgiving, and December 11th to 13th for Christmas.

🏀TIMBERWOLVES TAKE EDWARDS WITH FIRST PICK IN NBA DRAFT: The Minnesota Timberwolves chose Georgia guard Anthony Edwards with the first pick in the NBA Draft last night, which had been delayed multiple times from June because of the coronavirus pandemic. The draft was held virtually for the same reason, with Commissioner Adam Silver announcing the selections from ESPN's studios in Connecticut, without any players or fans in attendance.
  • The Golden State Warriors chose Memphis center James Wiseman with the second pick,
  • Guard LaMelo Ball, who skipped college to play professionally overseas, was taken third by the Charlotte Hornets.
  • Florida State forward Patrick Williams was chosen fourth by the Chicago Bulls.

Sinclair To Rename RSN Channels After Bally’s Casinos

Sinclair Broadcast Group and casino operator Bally’s Corp. are teaming up to bet big on sports gambling, The NY Post is reporting.  The two companies reportedly just signed a deal for Sinclair to rename its 21 sports networks Bally Sports.

Bally’s, which owns Bally’s Atlantic City Hotel & Casino, will pay Sinclair $85 million over a 10-year period for the naming rights, giving it exclusive access to fans of 42 major teams, including the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Detroit Tigers, the Tampa Bay Rays and the Kansas City Royals, sources said.

The goal, sources said, is for viewers to eventually be able to bet on games using a Bally’s online gaming tool directly from their TVs.

Sinclair’s channels are currently named after Fox Sports because it bought them last year to help clear Disney’s purchase of 21st Century Fox.

The broadcast company will also get a 15 percent stake in the Nasdaq-listed Bally’s and will have the right to up its stake by another 15 percent if it hits certain financial targets, sources said.

Separately, Bally’s is buying sports-betting software company Bet.Works for roughly $100 million and will attempt to drive traffic to its site through Sinclair, sources said.

The casino company, controlled by Soo Kim’s Standard General hedge fund, can launch the new online gaming tool in the states where sports betting is legal, including Nevada, Louisiana, Colorado and New Jersey, if it also has a physical casino there.

Bally’s, which recently changed its name from Twin River Worldwide Holdings, currently has casinos in 10 states, including Nevada, Mississippi, Missouri, Rhode Island, Colorado, New Jersey and Louisiana.

MBL, the NBA and NHL still need to sign off on whether Bally’s can sponsor broadcasts to advertise their sports betting tools, sources said.

Sinclair also owns a minority stake in New York’s YES Network, which broadcasts Yankees and Brooklyn Nets games, but the deal doesn’t extend to YES, sources said.

For Sinclair, a sports-betting partnership could help drive up views at a time when its investment in local sports networks has been sagging. Sinclair bought the Fox channels from Disney in August 2019 for $9.6 billion only to write down their value earlier this month by $4.23 billion, or nearly half.

Newsmax Cuts into Fox’s Viewership

Now that his largely invisible network has suddenly been flooded by fans of President Donald Trump, Newsmax television personality Grant Stinchfield is puffing out his chest, reports The Associated Press.

“They don’t know what to do with all of us,” Stinchfield said on the air Monday night. “We’re killing it here on Newsmax with a tactic they’ve never tried. It’s called the truth, the stone-cold truth, and once you get a taste of it, you will never tolerate being lied to again.”

Newsmax’s burst, whether or not it lasts, has been astonishingly swift and could foreshadow significant competition to Fox News Channel’s dominance with conservative viewers in two decades.

“We’ve really cornered Fox from the right,” said Chris Ruddy, Newsmax founder and friend of Trump. “They’ve never had that.”

From the beginning of July to the week before Election Day, Newsmax averaged 58,000 viewers from 7 to 10 p.m. on weekdays. That jumped to 568,000 the week after the election, the Nielsen company said. In the same period, daytime viewership increased from 46,000 to 450,000.

For the same dates, Fox News averaged 3.6 million viewers in the evening, Nielsen said. Fox’s prime-time viewership during the two weeks after the election was up 50 percent over last year.

“We love competition. We have always thrived on competition,” Fox Corp. CEO Lachlan Murdoch said on an Election Day earnings call.

Ruddy traced much of Newsmax’s increase to Trump supporters angered by Fox’s election night call that Democrat Joe Biden had won Arizona — ahead of any other news organization. While that call proved correct, for the president’s backers it was an ill-timed sign of insufficient loyalty from their favorite network.

Trump, who criticized Fox throughout the campaign, has driven the point home with repeated tweets suggesting his followers check out Newsmax or a smaller rival that also presses a conservative viewpoint, One America News Network.

While some disgruntled FNC viewers will take off to watch competing conservative channels such as One America News or Newsmax. Some may never come back. But those options have been around for a while and, to date, have remained niche outlets, according to Jeffrey M. McCall, an Opinion Contributor for The Hill.

FOX News Channel  still has a role to play in the news landscape, even when Trump leaves the White House. McCall adds, "If lax mainstream media coverage of the Biden campaign is any indication, coverage of a presumed Biden administration will likely be just as casual. Look for FNC to establish itself as the main scrutinizer of Biden and his expected leftward-lurch initiatives on taxes, climate, health care and international diplomacy. In short, Fox News will still be Fox News. Viewers who are now telling FNC, 'What have you done for me lately?' might still find time to watch.

Canada: Rogers Make Radio 'Adjustments'

Rogers Sports and Media is cancelling its Breakfast Television shows in Calgary and Vancouver, making adjustments to some local radio operations and laying off an unspecified number of staff.

A statement from the Toronto-based company says "a small percentage" of its staff across the country will be let go.

It says the Breakfast Television brand will remain and a new version of the morning show will air on six Citytv stations starting in the new year.

It also says there will be programming changes at some radio stations but "listeners will continue to hear local news and the stations will continue to support community events."

The emailed statement from Rogers Sports and Media spokeswoman Andrea Goldstein didn't identify the individual radio stations affected by these changes.

However, several people took to Twitter to say they'd be leaving the company, including Steve MacArthur, who has been a news editor at CJNI News 95.7 in Halifax.

"I was among the cuts today and "small percentage" of people let go across the country. I'm not surprised, doing fine and look forward to a nice break," MacArthur tweeted late Tuesday.

The CBC reports more than half of the staff at News 95.7 in Halifax were laid off, as parent company Rogers Media deals with what it calls a "seismic shift" in the industry on top of the COVID-19 pandemic. The layoffs, which come into effect Nov. 27, will reduce the number of staff at the news/talk radio station to six from 14.

Rogers Sports and Media, a fully owned subsidiary of Rogers Communications Inc., owns 56 radio stations and seven television stations, according to its website.

With the expiration of an US$8.4 billion play for the Cogeco group, investors are asking what’s next for rival Rogers Communications Inc, according to Bloomberg.

Rogers, Canada’s no. 3 cable and wireless firm by market value, teamed up with Altice USA Inc. to launch a hostile takeover bid for Quebec-based Cogeco Inc. and subsidiary Cogeco Communications Inc. When the controlling Audet family rejected the offer, they upped the price -- but the family stood firm and wouldn’t negotiate. The offer ran out Wednesday.

“We’re disappointed that we didn’t get the ability to engage with either the Audet family or the Cogeco boards on what is a terrific offer, a highly valued offer,” Rogers Chief Executive Officer Joe Natale said Wednesday at an industry conference.

Rogers owns 41 per cent of the subordinate voting shares of Cogeco Inc. and 33 per cent of the subordinate voting shares of Cogeco Communications, according to a Sept. 2 statement. Natale said on Oct. 22 that Rogers would revisit the investment if the deal didn’t go through, but did not explicitly say whether it would sell the stock. The board would “review our capital allocation priorities,” he told analysts.

For industry watchers, it’s now a waiting game to see if Rogers sells all or part of its Cogeco investment. “We’ll see if we hear about any next steps by Rogers before or with its 4Q reporting in January,” National Bank of Canada analyst Adam Shine said in an email.

Media Staffing Network, IBA Partner to Help Out-of-Work Radio Pros

Media Staffing Network (MSN), specialists in recruitment and placement for media, has partnered with the Independent Broadcasters Association (IBA) as part of the recently announced IBA Rapid Response Opportunity for out-of-work professionals in the radio industry. The partnership with MSN gives jobseekers in radio access to valuable tools that will help them improve their story with more effective resumes and job search skills that can help them land more quickly. MSN plans to host informative webinars on how to research and target new opportunities, stand out in the hiring process, and conduct and navigate a search in a remote world.

“With many broadcasters needing to downsize because of the impact COVID has had on the economy, there are many radio professionals looking for work,” stated Ron Stone, President and Executive Director of the IBA. “Media Staffing Network’s expertise in the media business, especially radio, will be an asset to those seeking employment, as well as to those looking to hire. We’re very pleased that they are sharing their insights and knowledge as we work together to keep radio strong and help radio talent get through a very difficult situation.”

Last week, IBA announced a ”Talent Available” section on its website, where out-of-work radio professionals can post their resume, and radio companies looking to hire can peruse the database at no charge to fill open positions.

Laurie Kahn, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Media Staffing Network noted, "When I saw the IBA announcement, I knew we had the right resources to help people get back to work, and I had to help. We’re always working to create solutions for radio operators struggling to hire and having access to those who are looking for employment can fill a lot of unique needs."

MSN has been vocal over the years about not discounting workers over 50 or who are unemployed. "There is a lot of great talent out there that can bring value to operators,” continued Kahn. “Interestingly, COVID has opened up minds to how effectively work can be done from a home office or studio."
