R.I.P.: Mile Arlo, Legendary Hampton Roads Personality

Mike Arlo (1948-2026)

Mike Arlo, a beloved fixture of Hampton Roads rock radio for more than five decades, died Tuesday at age 77 following a brief illness, 106.9 The Fox announced Wednesday.

The station will air a special tribute to Arlo on Friday, June 5, at 10 a.m. on “Your Radio.” Listeners are invited to submit audio messages by calling 757-523-1010 or using the Open Mic feature on the Fox app. The station plans to play as many tributes as possible.

Arlo’s upbeat, high-energy personality defined local rock radio starting in 1975, when he joined FM99 WNOR and launched the popular midday show “Arlo’s Electric Lunch.” In 1996, he moved to sister station Classic Rock 106.9 The Fox, where he continued entertaining audiences for nearly three more decades.

Beyond the airwaves, Arlo was deeply involved in community service. He actively supported signature local events including the Rock and Roll Up Your Sleeve Blood Drive and the Mayflower Marathon Annual Food Drive, using his platform to rally listeners for charitable causes.

Carol Commander, General Manager at Saga Communications, which owns 106.9 The Fox, said Arlo’s impact was profound. “To say that Mike Arlo will be missed is truly an understatement,” Commander said.

“His impact on our industry, our wonderful listeners, and our community he served so passionately for over five decades is immeasurable. His loss leaves a void that simply cannot be filled.”

Tributes and memories from listeners and colleagues continue to pour in across social media following the announcement.
