Apple Makes Major Software Updates For CarPlay Ultra

Apple has launched CarPlay Ultra, the next generation of its CarPlay software, marking a significant upgrade to its in-car infotainment system. Announced last week, and initially rolling out with Aston Martin vehicles in the U.S. and Canada, CarPlay Ultra aims to deliver a deeply integrated, customizable, and seamless in-car experience.

Key Features of CarPlay Ultra: Multi-Screen Integration Unlike the original CarPlay, which primarily operated on the main infotainment screen, CarPlay Ultra extends to all driver screens, including the instrument cluster. This means Apple-styled gauges, speedometers, tachometers, fuel levels, and navigation directions appear across the dashboard, creating a unified interface.

The system reflects the automaker’s branding, allowing for customizable layouts, themes, and color schemes that align with the vehicle’s design philosophy (e.g., a Porsche might feature a houndstooth background).

Deeper Vehicle Integration CarPlay Ultra controls core vehicle functions like climate control, seat adjustments, and other systems directly through the interface or via Siri voice commands, reducing reliance on the car’s native controls.

It accesses real-time vehicle data, displaying metrics like torque, horsepower, tire pressure, and electric vehicle charge status, making it a comprehensive in-car operating system.

Enhanced App Support and Widgets New apps include Auto Settings, Climate, and an FM Radio app, with support for third-party apps expected to expand.

Dynamic widgets allow drivers to prioritize information like navigation, calendar events, weather, or music controls on the dashboard. Split-screen functionality enables multitasking, such as viewing maps alongside messages.
