A broken commitment to release additional details about the Jeffrey Epstein case has ignited fury among some of President Donald Trump’s staunchest allies.
The Associated Press reports the Justice Department’s claim last week that no “client list” exists for Epstein, who faced sex trafficking charges, has fueled accusations of a cover-up, clashing with earlier statements from Attorney General Pam Bondi.
In February, Bondi suggested she had a “client list” on her desk, only to later clarify she meant the broader case file. She also claimed officials were reviewing a “truckload” of previously unreleased evidence, but the Justice Department now says public disclosure is inappropriate, citing a judge’s order to seal much of the material.
The reversal has incensed right-wing influencers who once echoed Trump’s calls for transparency but now feel betrayed by his administration.
Prominent voices like Tucker Carlson, Laura Loomer, and Steve Bannon have criticized the government’s handling as opaque, threatening to fracture the MAGA base.
Jeffrey Epstein, a wealthy financier, was arrested in 2019 on federal sex trafficking charges. His associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, was charged with facilitating the abuse of teenage girls. Epstein died in a New York City federal jail a month later, with investigators ruling his death a suicide. Maxwell was convicted in 2021 and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
The case drew intense scrutiny due to Epstein and Maxwell’s connections to high-profile figures, including royalty, presidents, and billionaires. It also sparked major conspiracy theories among Trump’s supporters, amplifying demands for full disclosure.
