Seattle Radio: Layoffs Reach Non-Com KUOW

Seattle’s KUOW, a public radio station, has announced layoffs that will impact staffing. Here are the details:

Number of Layoffs: Eight members of the KUOW staff will be laid off.

Program Cancellation: The station will end its award-winning RadioActive youth radio program.

Financial Context: KUOW is facing financial challenges, with rising costs of journalism and insufficient revenue growth to cover expenses. In response, they are taking decisive actions to align their budget with available funding.

Impact: The layoffs amount to 6% of the workforce, affecting three RadioActive employees and five business staffers.

Reserves: KUOW previously pulled $2.9 million from its $11 million reserves due to financial concerns last year.

The station’s General Manager, Caryn G. Mathes, emphasized the need for a balanced and sustainable organizational structure while providing support to affected employees during the transition process. Layoffs have been occurring at radio stations across the country, reflecting broader financial challenges in the industry.
