After calling Yankees' Games for 36-years, John Sterling has retired |
On Monday, the Yankees announced the retirement of their legendary radio voice John Sterling after 36 seasons with the franchise.
Sterling's retirement is effective immediately. He will be honored in a pregame ceremony Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.
Tributes to the iconic announcer, perhaps best known for his customized home run calls, poured in throughout the day. Here is a sample of what people in baseball were saying about Sterling:
Derek Jeter: “Congrats to John Sterling on an amazing career. I’ve had the pleasure of listening to and working with John for decades. He is a major part of Yankee history and will be greatly missed.”
Aaron Boone: "Know this is the right time and the best thing for John. He’ll be forever — forever — connected to the Yankees and a voice for generations. There’s so many amazing calls."
Aaron Judge: “What’s John going to come up with this time? What’s he going to use? Will he go last name, first name, how’s he going to do this? He always outsmarts us and comes up with something great that the fans love, we love, as players, listening to it.”
Broadcast partner Suzyn Waldman: “There will never be another John Sterling, there just can’t be. That’s the biggest compliment. Every day was a unique, funny, strange, wonderful experience.”
