Rob Norton Jr. was the owner and CEO of KZIA, inc. in Cedar Rapids, which operates KZIA Z102.9 FM, Sports KGYM ESPN Radio and ROB 102.9 FM-HD2. Norton also founded KRNA radio before selling it in 1998.
KZIA, Inc. released the following statement:
"Our hearts are broken as we learn of the passing of two people in a vehicle accident Monday night, including Robert Norton, the President of KZIA, Inc. Our thoughts and prayers are with all involved in the accident, as well as with their families and friends."
A former coworker and friend of Norton said he will be remembered for his dedication to radio.
"Robbie was totally dedicated to radio... a very interesting person, motivated and wanted to see KRNA succeed," said Roger Christian of Iowa City, "I really enjoyed being around him and talking to him and learning from him... He was, as I said before, an absolute force unto himself and he will be missed."The Cedar Rapids Police Department said Norton was driving southbound in the northbound lanes.
An investigation found that Norton's vehicle ran into a car driven by Jennifer Koenighain, 28, of Cedar Rapids.
Both Norton and Koenighain were pronounced dead at the scene.
KZIA has long been one of the top-rated stations in Cedar Rapids. In fall 2017, it finished as a rare No. 2 to Townsquare Media’s crosstown Country KHAK-FM.
Norton’s career began with All Access Music Group owner Joel Denver at WINX 1600 AM in Rockville, Md. Norton would then take a weekend position at WPGC 1580 AM / FM 95.5 in Washington, then the biggest Top 40 station in the Nation’s Capital.
“A consummate radio junkie, he fulfilled his lifelong dream to own and operate his own stations. You will be missed for your laughter, your quirkiness, love of the business and friends as well as your creativity. RIP my friend,” Denver said.
