Cumulus Media announces that News/Talk WJR 760 AM’s 2015 Mitch Albom S.A.Y. Detroit Radiothon raised a record $1,002,748.00 for the Mitch Albom charities.
The Radiothon, now in its fourth year, was broadcast live on WJR-AM last Thursday, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Somerset Collection in Troy, MI. Albom welcomed special guests, including: Hugh Jackman, Paul Stanley, Billy Bob Thornton, Jane Pauley, JK Simmons, Craig Ferguson, Alice Cooper, Dr. Phil, Tim Allen, Howard Schultz, Dave Barry, John Pizzarelli, Mayor Mike Duggan, Bruce Cornblatt, Kevin Eubanks, Charles Woodson, Kirk Cousins, Matt Stafford, Stan Van Gundy, Brad Ausmus, Dan Gilbert, and Bernie Smilovitz.
All proceeds of the Radiothon go directly to benefit a host of local charities under the S.A.Y. umbrella. 100% of the funds raised go to help the people served by these charities, as Albom personally pays all administrative costs of his charities.
Albom, host of WJR’s “The Mitch Albom Show” which airs weekdays from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m., is a newspaper columnist and bestselling author of books including: “Tuesdays With Morrie”, “The Five People You Meet in Heaven” and his current book, “The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto”.
S.A.Y. Detroit was founded in February, 2006, after Albom went public with a plea to do as much for the homeless that winter as the city was doing over a Super Bowl weekend. He spent a night in a homeless shelter to call attention to the issue. S.A.Y. Detroit (Super All Year Detroit) works to improve the lives of Detroit’s neediest citizens, through shelter, food, medical care, volunteer efforts and education. It supports ongoing major projects incuding: S.A.Y. Detroit Family Health Clinic, S.A.Y. Play Center, Working Homes/Working Families, and A Time to Help.
Among S.A.Y. Detroit’s accomplishments are:
- The nation’s first full-time medical clinic for homeless children and their mothers
- A state-of-the-art kitchen at the Michigan Veterans Foundation
- A full-time day care center for the children of homeless women who are in transition or searching for work
- Newly refurbished homes for poor but working families, that are deeded over to them after two years of occupancy
- The funding of dozens of projects for Detroit area agencies
