As events go, bad Winter Weather makes for great ratings for
all-news stations. Take CBS Radio’s WBBM
780 AM / 105.9 FM. It made it to the Top Spot in the January PPMs (6+ AQH) released
Tuesday by Nielsen. The newser spiked
5.7—7.2, its highest share in over a year.
iHeartMedia’s Urban AC WVAZ 102.7 FM V103 lost more share
6.7—6.2 to remain at #2. Hubbard’s Hot AC WTMX
101.9 recouped some share from WLIT moving 4.1—5.2 and moved up to #3. Meanwhile, iHM’s HotAC/Holiday Music station WLIT 93.9 FM My93-9 dropped like a rock 14.2—4.5
and slipped from #1 to #4. And iHM’s Top
40 WKSC 103.5 FM KISS-FM stopped five months trending downward or remaining
flat and got an uptick 3.8—4.0 come come in at #5.

Noteworthy: the January PPMs showed NPR’s “Morning Edition” and the locally produced “Morning Shift” anchored by Tony Sarabia on Chicago Public Media WBEZ 91.5 FM in a four-way tie for 10th place. The noncommercial station posted a 3.0 percent share of all listeners — up one full share point from December.
Chicago Media writer Robert Feder points out the impressive jump at WBEZ coincided with the collapse of Cumulus Media news/talk WLS AM 890, which dropped to a tie for 25th in mornings with a 1.1 share. One year ago WLS was tied for fifth in mornings with a 3.8 share. Big John Howell, formerly of Salem Communications news/talk WIND AM 560, replaced Bruce Wolf as WLS morning host on January 19. Minus Howell in mornings, WIND ranked 30th with a 0.9 share.
