NYC Radio: Homeless Man Sought In Beating of WINS Anchor

Brian Carey
The 1010 WINS anchor found savagely beaten in his Upper East Side apartment building Monday night was beaten by his homeless male friend, police sources told The NYPost Wednesday.

52-year-old Brian Carey was pummeled around 11 p.m. Monday, suffering a broken jaw, facial fractures and a deep gash, the sources said.

Carey, whose voice is familiar to millions of news junkies who listen to 1010 WINS, staggered downstairs and collapsed in the lobby.

Police found him semi-conscious. His wallet and cell phone were missing.

Carey was rushed to New York Presbyterian Hospital. He was unable to talk to investigators at first because of his shattered jaw.

But Tuesday night, the newsman started communicating with detectives and gave several different accounts.  “He first said it was a robbery,” said one police source. “Then he said he knew the guy.” Carey ID’d his attacker to cops, who are now searching for the suspect.

Carey has been a fixture at the “most-listened to station in the nation” for more than a decade, and currently anchors the weekday “afternoon drive” newscasts from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.  He’s also heard across the country on the ABC Radio Networks.

Carey is a Nanticoke, PA native who got his first job at WNAK 730 AM “not so much because of his talent but rather because he agreed to also cut the grass,” according to his profile on 1010 WINS’ website.

He got a part-time job with WBRE 1340 AM while attending King’s College and became the news director at WILK 980 AM Radio in his 20s.

He became anchor of an hour-long evening newscast for WARM 590 AM and was the morning anchor for WMGS Magic 93 FM before moving on to anchoring jobs in Philadelphia and then NYC.

NYC Radio: Mister Cee “Let Everyone Down”

UPDATE THURSDAY 1:30PM:  Following his abrupt resignation from New York’s WQHT Hot 97 radio station Wednesday, DJ Mister Cee broke his silence Thursday morning on the station’s morning show. The candid interview, which marks Cee’s second time this year addressing solicitation allegations with Hot 97 morning show host and Program Director, Ebro Darden, found the influential DJ admitting that he has received “fellatio from transvestites”.

A popular hip hop DJ resigned Wednesday after audio of him allegedly soliciting sex from a cross-dressing prostitute was released online.

According to the NYPost, Mister Cee announced he’d be leaving his gig at WQHT Hot 97 FM on the air and later tweeted that he “let everyone down.”

Rumors and allegations had surrounded the DJ, whose real name is Calvin Lebrun, for more than a year. This week, popular male blogger Bimbo Winehouse posted audio he claims is Mister Cee soliciting sex from him. Cee pleaded guilty to loitering for the purpose of engaging in a prostitution offense in 2011.

“I went through a lot in the past two years and I’ve tried to rise above those situations, I have tried to move forward from these situations and unfortunately every time I try to move forward, it’s like I take one step forward and then two steps back, and I’m hurting the people who are closest to me, which is my Hot 97 fam,” he said on the air Wednesday.

The station also released a statement saying that his resignation “is in the best interest of both Hot 97 and Cee’s personal well-being. While we do not endorse the alleged activities, he is clearly facing a personal dilemma that is for him and only him to comment on,” the statement read. “We are saddened by his departure; his contributions here at HOT 97 were great and we know him as a friend, a caring individual and significant hip hop advocate. We wish Mr. Cee the best and will always consider him a family member of HOT 97."

NYC Radio: Mike Francesa Offended By B&C Comments

WFAN 660 AM / 101.9FM’s  Craig Carton and Francesa traded barbs on Wednesday with Carton taking Francesa to task for his choice of words about former Giants star Lawrence Taylor on his show Tuesday, and Francesa responding later on in his show.

According to The NY Post, Carton said Francesa was excusing Taylor’s behavior in an incident in 2010 in which the legendary linebacker was charged with felony statutory rape after having sex with a 16-year-old girl he knew was a prostitute but claimed to be of legal age.

Though Carton, who has made a habit of criticizing Francesa, didn’t mention Francesa’s name, he accused the popular talk show host of “as offensive as any comment that has ever been uttered on this radio station.”

Esiason piled on, saying based on what Carton said, Francesa’s remarks were “asinine.” Like Carton, Esiason didn’t mention Francesa’s name.

Report: Cumulus Settles Suit With Ralph Barberi

Ralph Barberi
A source close to Angelia Alioto, the lawyer representing former KNBR Sports host, Ralph Barbieri, told 415 Media blogger Rich Lieberman the suit was effectively settled Wednesday afternoon in SF Superior Court.

Barbieri, according to the source, will receive $4-million, pending normal signing of legal documents and papers pertinent to the case.

The source told Lieberman that Barbieri and his son 'Tate will live comfortably the rest of their life."

Barbieri was fired from KNBR Cumulus in April, 2012 after nearly three decades on the air with the all-sports SF Radio outlet after he disclosed he was battling early-stages of Parkinson's disease.

NYC Radio: CBS Radio, Yankees Ink Long-Term Deal

The New York Yankees reached a multiyear agreement Wednesday for their games to be broadcast on WFAN-660 AM 101.9 FM, the station that pioneered 24-hour sports radio programming 26 years ago.

The deal, according to mlb.com, calls for the games to be simulcast on WFAN-FM beginning next season, with both stations carrying all Yanks regular-season and postseason games, as well as pregame and postgame shows and select Spring Training games. CBS Radio also acquired rights to the Spanish-language broadcasts on a multiyear basis.

The agreement ends the Yankees' run on News WCBS 880 AM that began in 2002.

WFAN, which is also the flagship station for the NFL's New York Giants, NHL's New Jersey Devils and NBA's Brooklyn Nets, had aired Mets games since its inception in 1987.

Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon confirmed on Tuesday that his team would be seeking a new radio home.

John Sterling has done play-by-play of the Yanks' games since 1989, when they were aired on WABC. Color commentator Suzyn Waldman joined Sterling in the booth in 2005. There has been no indication given concerning a change for the 2014 season.

“We are extremely excited to have reached an agreement with CBS RADIO,” said Yankees Managing General Partner Hal Steinbrenner. “The paramount consideration was how our fans would best be able to hear our games. Having the Yankees on WFAN-AM/FM provides listeners in the New York metropolitan area and beyond with superior broadcast quality and vast territorial signal strength.”

“We are privileged to welcome the New York Yankees to WFAN,” said Dan Mason, CBS RADIO President and CEO. “There is no bigger name in baseball than the Yankees, nor an organization so steeped in tradition. As the nation’s premier sports radio station we look forward to capturing all the excitement surrounding the team, and bringing it to millions of fans for many years to come.”

Huntington Radio: The ‘X’ Flips From Active To Classic Rock

A long-running metal and modern radio rock station is now in the history books.

On Tuesday, Sept. 10, CCM+E/Huntington announced that WAMX 106.3 FM has been transformed from active rock into a classic rock station, 106.3-FM, The Brew.

According to the herald-dispatch.com, the loss of WAMX leaves the locally owned Kindred Communications station WCMI 92.7 / 98.5 FM The Planet as the only modern rock station in the region.

Arbitron reported that The Planet had a 4.2 share (12+) in the spring ratings compared to a 2.8 share for WAMX.

Jim Davis, regional program manager for Clear Channel Media and Entertainment West Virginia, said they're excited for a fresh change to a format that's always played well in the Tri-State.

First hitting the airwaves in 1997 as the Tri-State's first active rock station, X106.3-FM became known as the destination for new and modern rock music through the distinct voices of a slew of colorful DJs that included through the years Paul "Ozz" Oslund, Robin Wilds, Erik Raines, Brandon Woolum and Ryan Zipperian.

"Personally, I hate to see a legendary rock station bite the dust," said Mike Kirtner, who heads up Kindred Communications. "The larger corporations tend to do things based on curtailing expenses. Rock is alive and well in the area. One has to go no further than Rally on the River to witness the format's impact. Over 40,000 people attended rock concerts that were hosted by The Planet. We're here to stay."

Tina Brown And The Beast Part Company

Tina Brown
Tina Brown, the mercurial editor whose career has latterly received more attention than the publications for which she was responsible, has announced her departure from the Daily Beast, her experiment in digital journalism noted for its particular success in burning through the cash of its billionaire backer.

According to The Guardian, Brown is never one to undersell herself.   She reserved the most prominent slot on the front page of the Beast's website on Wednesday afternoon to declare that "the irrepressible editor", as the headline-writer called her, was leaving to set up a company dedicated to "theatrical journalism".

Many of the chapters in Brown's storied career begin with a blaze but end in bitterness, dispute or ignominy, and The Guardian notes the glowing report did not say was that her personal experiment in digital journalism, supported by copious amounts of the media mogul Barry Diller's cash, was at an inglorious end.

The Beast was launched as a groundbreaking digital publication in 2008, but after a disastrous merger with Newsweek, and the publications' equally traumatic divorce, Diller appears to have decided he had signed enough of Brown's checks.

Detroit Radio: Sports Wars Heating Up

Lions. Tigers. Red Wings. Pistons. Michigan. Michigan State.

“Detroit is one of the three or four best sports towns in America,” said Mike Valenti, a host at WXYT 97.1 FM The Ticket.

And that’s why, according to The Detroit News, many radio industry insiders were floored it took longer than six months, let alone six years, for Metro Detroit to see a second sports-talk station hop on the FM dial to take a run at CBS Radio’s 97.1.

That station is Detroit Sports WMCG 105.1 FM Detroit Sports/ESPN which broadcasts out of the Greater Media’s Ferndale compound.

On Wednesday, 105.1 FM  got a glimpse of its initial impact, by way of its first full weekly ratings. To nobody’s surprise, 97.1, which has been on the FM dial since 2007, dominated the cumulative numbers, or total audience.

“Until you get a decent sample size, the numbers really don’t play into decision making,” said Jason Dixon, the station’s program director who came to Detroit from Raleigh, N.C.

“This is a long-term play for us. It’s not a short-term approach we’re taking. We’ve done some great things.”

WXYT is local practically around the clock.  And that’s a major obstacle for 105.1, which clears ESPN.

The other big advantage 97.1 has: The teams.

In an unusual set of circumstances, 97.1 owns the broadcast rights to all four pro teams. That’s big-time bragging rights for the station, but doesn’t always sit well with the teams. When there are scheduling conflicts, one game has to be demoted to the AM dial — either 1270 in the case of the Tigers or Red Wings, WWJ 950 with the Pistons.

Getting the rights to a team or two is a big priority for 105.1.

Charlotte Radio: Maney Sez Concert Kept Him Off Flight 93

Kiss-95.1 FM's Maney
Charlotte radio host Maney from WNKS 95.1 FM KISS "Drex and Maney" told listeners Wednesday he was actually supposed to be on Flight 93, the plane that went down on 9/11 in Shanksville, Pa.

Channel 9 caught up with Maney at the Laps for Life blood drive at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, an annual event on 9/11 to honor first responders.

He said he was flying to California from New Jersey and had booked Flight 93, but he changed it to a later flight because he knew he would be up late the night before at a concert.

"The day was so surreal. I was stuck in (the) Newark airport all day. When I arrived there we saw the smoke, but we didn't see that it was the World Trade Center, we just saw smoke," Maney said.

Maney said that he was one of the only people with a radio to listen to the reports as passengers evacuated Newark airport.

He told listenters Wednesday that when the first building collapsed, he remembered a woman crying because her husband worked in that building

Report: Miley Cyrus Getting More Attention Than Syria

That Miley Cyrus captures more attention than escalating war in Syria is, by now, conventional wisdom. But, according to New York magazine’s blog The Cut, an exhaustive survey of news sources now reveals exactly how much attention Miley steals: Americans viewed twelve times as many pages about Miley Cyrus as they did about Syria — even though the news sources published 2.4 Syria articles for every one about Miley.

Outbrain supplies "related links" modules to a network of 100,000 publishers, including major news sources like CNN, Fox News, and ESPN. On any given day, 87 percent of Americans who browse the web will view a page with an Outbrain module, explains the company's vice-president of global marketing. They collect traffic data from every site in their network, which they use in a variety of algorithms to generate recommendations.

DJ Mister Cee
DJ Mister Cee, real name Calvin LeBrun, has resigned from his post as a deejay and an on-air personality at New York WQHT Hot 97. He had been with the station for 20 years. The station said in a press release that today (September 11) will be DJ Mister Cee’s final show on Hot 97, according to hiphopdx.com.

Hot 97 released the following statement regarding DJ Mister Cee’s departure.
“Due to some personal circumstances that have become public, after 20 years of service, Mr Cee has chosen to resign,” according to a statement from Hot 97. “We feel that this is in the best interest of both Hot 97 and Cee’s personal well-being. While we do not endorse the alleged activities, he is clearly facing a personal dilemma that is for him and only him to comment on. We wish Mr Cee the best and will always consider him a family member of Hot 97.”
On May 3, DJ Mister Cee was arrested in New York City after allegedly soliciting sex from an undercover male police officer posing as a prostitute. (See Original Posting, Click Here.)

After that arrest, DJ Mister Cee appeared on HOT 97’s morning show May 6 to discuss the incident he says he believes was "a sting operation.” While speaking with program director Ebro Darden, the radio personality discussed his sexual orientation.

"I am not gay," Mister Cee said at the time, according to MTV News. "They tried to turn it around and say the female officer was a male officer. It was a sting operation."

Mister Cee found himself in a similar situation in 2011 when he pled guilty to public lewdness and exposure charges after being arrested for allegedly engaging in a sexual act with a man in a parked car.
