November 9 Radio History

➦In 1895
...George Dewey Hay born in Attica, Indiana (Died – May 8, 1968). He was radio personality, announcer and newspaper reporter. He was the founder of the original Grand Ole Opry radio program on WSM-AM in Nashville, Tennessee, from which the country music stage show of the same name evolved.

In Memphis, Tennessee, after World War I, he was a reporter for the Commercial Appeal, and when the newspaper launched its own radio station, WMC-AM, in January 1923, he became a late-night announcer at the station.  His popularity increased and in May 1924 he left for WLS-AM in Chicago, where he served as the announcer on a program that became National Barn Dance.

George D Hay
On November 9, 1925, he moved on to WSM-AM in Nashville. Getting a strong listener reaction to 78-year-old fiddler Uncle Jimmy Thompson that November, Hay announced the following month that WSM would feature "an hour or two" of old-time music every Saturday night. He promoted the music and formed a booking agency.

The show was originally named WSM Barn Dance, and Hay billed himself as "The Solemn Old Judge." The Barn Dance was broadcast after NBC's Music Appreciation Hour, a program featuring classical music and grand opera. One day in December 1927, the final music piece on the Music Appreciation Hour depicted the sound of a rushing locomotive. After the show ended, "Judge Hay" opened the WSM Barn Dance with this announcement:

“ Friends, the program which just came to a close was devoted to the classics. Doctor Damrosch [host of the program] told us that there is no place in the classics for realism. However, from here on out for the next three hours, we will present nothing but realism. It will be down to earth for the 'earthy'. ”

Hay then introduced the man he dubbed "The Harmonica Wizard," DeFord Bailey, who played his classic train song, "The Pan American Blues," named for the crack Louisville and Nashville Railroad passenger train The Pan-American. After Bailey's performance, Hay commented, "For the past hour, we have been listening to music taken largely from Grand Opera. From now on we will present the Grand Ole Opry."

During the 1930s, he was involved with Rural Radio, one of the first magazines about country music, developing the Opry for NBC and working on the movie Grand Ole Opry (1940). He was an announcer with the radio show during the 1940s and toured with Opry acts, including the September 1947 Opry show at Carnegie Hall.

He was featured in Hoosier Holiday, a 1945 film from Republic Pictures, in a cast that also included Dale Evans.  Hay was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame two years before his death in 1968.

➦In 1925...KQP in Portland Oregon signed-on and the station changed its call sign to KOIN on April 12, 1926.

It became an affiliate of the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS), now known as the CBS Radio Network, on September 1, 1929.  During the golden years of radio, KOIN was one of Portland's major radio stations, with an extensive array of local programming, including live music from its own studio orchestra.

As a CBS radio affiliate, KOIN was the local home for CBS radio programs such as the CBS World News Roundup, Lux Radio Theater and Suspense. An FM station, KOIN-FM at 101.1, was launched in 1948. Both stations were owned by Field Enterprises, Inc. from 1947 until sold in 1952 to the Mount Hood Radio and Television Broadcasting Corporation.

KOIN and KOIN-FM were sold on May 1, 1977 to the Gaylord Broadcasting Company, and effective May 12, 1977 their call signs changed to KYTE (both AM and FM).  Its affiliation with CBS ended, and the CBS Radio Network's programming in the Portland market moved to KYXI at that time.

The stations using the former KOIN frequencies currently are KUFO (AM) and KXL-FM.

➦In 1925...the three day Fourth National US Radio Conference began in Washington, D.C. During the year since the previous conference, the number of US stations with 500 watts or more had nearly doubled from 115 to 197.

➦In 1930...sportscaster Charlie Jones was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas. For more than 30 years he called NFL football for NBC Sports.  He also broadcast baseball, golf, tennis, track & field at the Olympics, and soccer.  Jones died June 12 2008 at age 77.

➦In 1948...“This is Your Life” debuted on NBC radio. Ralph Edwards hosted the radio show for two years and for nine more (1952-1961) on television.

➦In 1961...Brian Epstein saw the Beatles play for the first time, at one of their lunchtime sessions at the Cavern Club in Liverpool. He became interested in the group after a customer in his record store inquired about a German import single of the Beatles backing singer Tony Sheridan on “My Bonnie.” Epstein soon became the Beatles’ manager, cleaning up their greasy, Teddy Boy image with collarless grey suits and the now familiar Beatle haircuts.

➦In 1965...At dusk on November 9, the biggest power failure in U.S. history occurred as all of New York state, portions of seven neighboring states, and parts of eastern Canada are plunged into darkness. The Great Northeast Blackout began at the height of rush hour, delaying millions of commuters, trapping 800,000 people in New York's subways, and stranding thousands more in office buildings, elevators, and trains. Ten thousand National Guardsmen and 5,000 off-duty policemen were called into service to prevent looting.

Wake-Up Call: Trump Promises 'Big Announcement' Next Week

Donald Trump said on the eve of US midterm elections that he would be making a “big announcement” next week, all but confirming his widely anticipated third White House bid that he’s been teasing for weeks.  “I’m going to be making a very big announcement on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at Mar-a-Lago,” he said at a Monday night rally ostensibly for Republican US Senate candidate JD Vance in Dayton, Ohio. “We want nothing to distract from the importance of tomorrow.”  But Vance, one of Trump’s endorsed candidates in key battleground states, took the stage for only a small fraction of Trump’s nearly 100-minute rally, where he painted a picture of an American decline that only he could salvage.

The former president’s appearance Monday night played into heightened attention around a possible declaration of his 2024 plans. Much of that intrigue has been stoked by Trump himself, who urged his followers on Sunday to “stay tuned” to his appearance on behalf of Vance — one of dozens of GOP midterm candidates who has received his endorsement.

➤DeSANTIS WARNED TO STAY IN FLORIDA: Donald Trump’s lawyer Alina Habba issued a stern warning to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday night at the former president’s rally in Dayton, Ohio, telling the unofficial 2024 Republican presidential contender to stand down. “DeSantis is DeSantis because of Trump,” Habba said on the pro-Trump YouTube channel Right Side Broadcasting Network. “He needs to stay in Florida,” she added. To that, fellow Trump lawyer and RSBN contributor Christina Bobb responded: “100% percent.” Habba proceeded to double down, stating: “Just stay where you are. You are doing a great job in Florida.”

➤REPUBLICAN SENATOR TOM COTTON DECIDES AGAINST 2024 PRESIDENTIAL BID: Republican Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas decided to forgo a 2024 campaign for the GOP presidential nomination, making him the first high-profile Republican to remove himself from a wide list of rumored GOP presidential hopefuls. Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis and former U.S. President Donald Trump, both who are yet to formally announce a 2024 presidential campaign, seem to be headed as the GOP front runners.

➤U.S. POLICE OFFICERS CHARGED IN TRAIN CRASH INTO PATROL CAR WITH SUSPECT: Two police officers, officer Jordan Steinke and sergeant Pablo Vazquez, involved in the arrest of a woman who was seriously injured when she was hit by a train while in custody inside of a parked patrol car were charged on Monday. The woman, Yareni Rios-Gonzalez, who was arrested after an alleged road rage incident involving a gun, was also charged with felony menacing.  Of the two police officers, Steinke faces the most serious charges. The 1st is attempted manslaughter and 2nd is second-degree assault, also both would be considered felonies.

Nancy Pelosi
➤NANCY TALKS: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the attack on her husband, Paul, would be a factor in deciding her political future, and expressed dismay that Donald Trump and others, including Elon Musk, had cast doubt on the attack. “You see what the reaction is on the other side to this, to make a joke of it, and really that is traumatizing, too,” Pelosi said in an interview with CNN on Monday night. Shortly after the interview was broadcast, Trump lashed out at Pelosi during a rally in Ohio for Republican candidates, calling her “an animal.”  “They’ll say ‘what a horrible thing he said about Nancy.’ She impeached me twice for nothing.” Pelosi said that the assault on Paul Pelosi in the couple’s San Francisco home by an intruder who the authorities say was looking for her, had “the same root, disinformation and the rest” that inspired the insurrection by Trump supporters at the US Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

➤WHERE ARE THE POWERBALL NUMBERS? Powerball announced Monday night that the drawing "has been delayed due to a participating lottery needing extra time to complete the required security protocols." "Powerball has strict security requirements that must be met by all 48 lotteries before a drawing can occur. When the required security protocols are complete, the drawing will be performed under the supervision of lottery security officials and independent auditors," a statement said.

There was no time frame given for the drawing. No one has won the jackpot since Aug. 3.

Study: Listeners Go Out of Their Way For Audio

Audio company Audacy released findings that show listeners intentionally setting aside time during their day to listen to their favorite audio content, adding another incentive for marketers to invest more ad dollars in the medium, reports AdWeek.

Based on over 1,000 respondents, 74% say they set aside time to listen to audio. Weekly podcast listeners make up 87% of the intentional listeners, while 86% of respondents Audacy classes as Gen Z. Audacy also found audio rivals social media scrolling and online streaming as a medium for rituals. This study is part of the company’s second part of the 2022 State of Audio series.

The study also identified ritual personas that are focused on self-help and self-care. More specifically, 75% surveyed are growth seekers, 61% are parents, and 56% are people interested in fitness.

“One of the audio superpowers is its ubiquity, and it’s the ultimate companion,” said Audacy chief marketing officer Paul Suchman. “Audio can be with you, wherever you go, whenever you want it.”

This study suggests advertisers target the specific ritual through a podcast’s genre and match the message to the context. Despite audio’s growth, marketers are still not giving it a fair share of their media budgets, Suchman told Adweek. “Audio is sitting there as one of the big four mediums now it’s not sitting there as a ‘nice to have.’ It’s sitting there as a ‘must have.'”

Nets Investing More In Streaming The News

Live news and sports are keeping a substantial number of viewers tuned in to traditional TV. But the audience migration to online video has led the news divisions at the “Big Three” broadcast networks to get deeper into the 24-hour news business through free, ad-supported channels that can be accessed on internet-connected TV sets and mobile devices.

The L-A Times reports Walt Disney Co.'s ABC, Paramount Global’s CBS and Comcast’s NBC have all stepped up their investment in their services, giving viewers a destination for their reporting anytime without a pay TV subscription.

The channels — NBC News Now, ABC News Live and CBS News Streaming — were launched over the last decade without much fanfare. But they have quietly built audiences, and the news divisions presidents all say their services are profitable. Each offers a mix of repeats of network TV news broadcasts and original live reporting and documentaries.

Networks have committed their big-name personalities to daily live programs on the channels, such as NBC’s Chuck Todd, Kate Snow and Hallie Jackson; ABC’s Linsey Davis; and John Dickerson of CBS — a sign that they know where the viewers are going.

“By and large every reporter wants their stories to be seen by as many people as possible,” said Neeraj Khemlani, president and co-head of news and stations for CBS. “People feel like they want to be a part of that future.”

Network executives say they are seeing steady growth in their streaming audiences, especially on election nights and after major news events such as the death of Queen Elizabeth II or Hurricane Ian, which devastated parts of Florida in late September.

Advertisers Hit the Brakes

by Felix Richter, Statista

When Google’s parent company Alphabet reported a slowdown in advertising sales in its latest quarterly earnings report late last month, it stoked fears of a broader advertising downturn. After all, Google is by far the largest media owner in the world, with more than $200 billion in annual ad sales. And if a dominant player like that sees sales slow down significantly, that doesn’t bode well for the rest of the industry. In the three months ended September 30, Google’s advertising sales growth slowed to just 3 percent year-over-year, the lowest it’s been since 2009 apart from Q2 2020, when Covid stifled ad spending around the world.

As the following chart shows, Google’s advertising slowdown is in fact part of a broader trend, as advertisers cut budgets amid recession fears and a sea of uncertainty. According to Standard Media Index’s September 2022 Core Data report, ad spending in the U.S. dropped by 5 percent in September, continuing a four-month decline. Total ad spending across all media was down 6 percent in the third quarter, as both digital and television ad spending growth evaporated over the first nine months of the year.

With recession fears looming large over the U.S. economy, advertising businesses should batten down the hatches, as ad spending has historically declined disproportionately amid economic downturns.

TikTok Expands Lead As Teens’ Favorite

TikTok continues its ascent. Fresh off becoming teens’ favorite social media platform earlier this year, it has built on its lead in this latest edition of Piper Sandler’s semi-annual Taking Stock with Teens survey.

In this Fall 2022 survey almost 4 in 10 (38% share of) US teens surveyed named TikTok their favorite social media platform, up from 33% in the previous survey conducted during the Spring. Snapchat, the last leader prior to TikTok’s ascendance, remained the second-most preferred platform, but lost a percentage point to 30% share. Instagram, which last led the teen social media popularity sweepstakes in 2015, also lost ground, cited by 20% of surveyed teens as their favorite (from 22% in the Spring).

The only other platforms highlighted in the survey’s findings are afterthoughts: Discord (4% share, down from 5% in the Spring); Facebook (2% share, down from 3%); and Twitter (2% share, flat).

WaPo Awards 'Bottomless Pinocchio' To Joe Biden

The Washington Post crowned President Biden Monday with its Trump-era “bottomless Pinocchio” rating after he told multiple untruths and committed several gaffes ahead of Tuesday’s midterm elections.

The NY Post reports it’s the first time the newspaper has “awarded” Biden the not-so-coveted rating, which it defines as a statement repeated at least 20 times that is so false that it has received either “three Pinocchios” or “four Pinocchios” on prior occasions.

The statement in question is Biden’s oft-repeated claim that he has spent “more time with [Chinese
President Biden

President] Xi Jinping than any other head of state,” traveling “17,000 miles with him.”

The statement has been proven false, with the White House in February 2021 telling the newspaper it was “a reference to the total travel back and forth — both internally in the US and China, and as well as internationally — for meetings they held together.”

But even that claim proved to be inaccurate. “There is no evidence Biden traveled that much with Xi, the president of China — and even if we added up the miles Biden flew to see Xi, it still did not total 17,000 miles,” Washington Post fact-checker Glenn Kessler wrote Monday.

AM/FM Radio And Podcasts Work For Pet Supplies Retailers

The Cumulus Media | Westwood One Audio Active Group® recently commissioned a series of Signal Hill Insights studies to measure the impact of two pet retailer campaigns. One was for a retailer’s network radio campaign, and the other was for a podcast campaign.

Both studies revealed AM/FM radio and podcast advertising can generate a significant brand lift and sales effect. This week’s blog outlines the key findings.

  • Pet ownership is greatest among 25-54s and declines sharply over the age of 55. Nielsen Scarborough reveals more than half of adults 25-54 own a pet.
  • Heavy AM/FM radio listeners are +15% more likely than TV viewers to be pet owners, revealing pet category media plans are underweight on AM/FM radio and overspent on TV.
  • Nielsen Media Impact: Adding AM/FM radio to pet brand TV media plans generates a massive lift in campaign reach.
  • AM/FM radio listeners are far more likely to be customers of the national pet chain retailer according to Signal Hill Insights campaign effect study.  46% of AM/FM radio listeners were customers of the national pet retailer compared to only 39% of TV viewers.
  • Brand lift: Key perceptions in the campaign saw growth. Comparing perceptions associated with the retailer before and after the campaign saw lifts of +4% to +17%.
  • AM/FM radio worked: Advertising recall grew +24%, and six in 10 said they would take an action based on the campaign. In the one-month period, aided ad recall grew from 21% to 26%, a +24% increase.
  • Signal Hill Insights podcast brand effect study: Significant impact up and down the purchase funnel. The podcast campaign generated significant impact: Top-of-mind awareness grew +55%; brand consideration increased +24%; brand recommendation improved +23%; and online purchase intent was up +24%.

Morning Show Boot Camp Headed To Dallas In '23

After months of eyeing stops across the U.S. for Talentmaster's 35th Annual Morning Show Boot Camp (MSBC), the city of Dallas was selected for this year's event to be held at the beautiful, recently-opened Marriott Uptown Hotel.

MSBC 35 is set for August 10 & 11, 2023. The hotel is located in the trendy, upscale Uptown Dallas area near the art district - home to numerous, popular areas such as West Village, Victory Park, Klyde Warren Park, Deep Ellum, Oak Lawn, Dallas Farmers Market District, Trinity Groves, Dallas West End, Design District and many more.

MSBC founder/host Don Anthony commented, "No one will ever know how hard we searched for the perfect venue and location for our 35th annual event. Our main objectives in choosing a location was affordability, accessability by air and car, and finding a hotel within walking distance to numerous restaurants, entertainment sites and more. Rising costs made this search a bit harder than in years past, says Anthony. "As the pandemic continues to fade, proposed room rates and other items at many of the hotels we reviewed rose higher than in years past. Knowing the importance of keeping costs as low as as possible for our attendees, stations and sponsors, weighed heavily on our final choices." Surprisingly, this mark's radio's much lauded event's first-ever stop in Dallas. In fact, its first trip to Texas.

November 8 Radio History

➦In 1939
...WQXR-FM NYC signed-on as W2XQR.

WQXR-FM is the outgrowth of a "high-fidelity" AM station, WQXR 1560 AM, which was founded in 1936 by John V. L. Hogan and Elliott Sanger. Hogan began this station as a mechanical television station, W2XR, which went on the air on March 26, 1929.

One of the station's listeners was the inventor of frequency modulation, Edwin Howard Armstrong. When Armstrong put his experimental FM station, W2XMN, on the air, he arranged to rebroadcast some of WQXR's programming. This ended in 1939, when Hogan and Sanger put their own experimental FM station on the air, W2XQR on this date, just down the dial from Armstrong at 42.3 MHz.

When the Federal Communications Commission began licensing commercial FM stations, W2XQR moved to 45.9 MHz and became W59NY; the special FM call signs were later dropped and the station became WQXQ.

➦In 1953...Buddy Holly and Bob Montgomery (billed as “Buddy & Bob”) appeared on radio station KDAV in their hometown of Lubbock, Texas, in the first of a series of Sunday country music shows.

➦In 2012
....WXRK NYC changed call letters to WNOW-FM. The calls today are WINS-FM. The station is owned by Audacy Communications and airs an All-News format via a simulcast with 1010WINS-AM. (An Alternative music format airs on HD-2)

The station, first known as WMCA-FM, went on the air on December 25, 1948. It was co-owned with WMCA 570 AM by former New York state senator Nathan Straus. FM radio was not a successful venture for Straus, and he sought to either sell it or close the station down altogether.

WNYL logo
In late 1950, Straus sold the station to the owners of WHOM 1480 AM, now WZRC, and WHOM-FM appeared on February 26, 1951, featuring a variety of formats, including ethnic, background music, classical, Spanish, and easy listening. By the early 1970s, WHOM-FM had a Spanish-language easy listening format.

Following the sale of the WHOM stations to SJR Communications, the FM station became WKTU, taking on an adult contemporary format that began on June 5, 1975. At that point, WKTU was positioned as a "soft rock" station and called "Mellow 92". Ratings were relatively low. The station held on to the format in spite of low ratings until 1978.

That June, when a station executive, David Rapaport (father of actor Michael Rapaport), visited New York's Studio 54 discothèque on half a dozen occasions, and was very impressed with the crowds there. He then got the idea that a disco-based station was needed, as several FM-based Top 40 stations were leaning disco in other markets.

As a result, Rapaport purchased 200 disco records and brought them into the station. Keeping the same air-staff, adding Paco from their Spanish-language AM station WHOM, and with no notice, the station abruptly flipped to a disco-based rhythmic top 40 format with the tagline "Disco 92" at 6 p.m. on July 24, 1978.

In fall 1978, the station rose from "Worst to First", unseating Top40 77WABC-AM in the 18−30 age demographic.
