Falling Masks Expose Network Bias

Dan Gainor, a freelance opinion editor for Fox News Digital, published a piece on Monday, criticizing ABC News’ suspension of senior national correspondent Terry Moran as evidence of broader media bias.

Moran was suspended Sunday after a since-deleted X post called President Donald Trump and his deputy chief of staff, Stephen Miller, “world-class haters,” with Moran stating Miller’s “hatreds are his spiritual nourishment.” ABC News cited a violation of its objectivity and impartiality standards, suspending Moran pending further evaluation.

Gainor argued that Moran’s post exposed his long-standing bias, describing him as a “biased hack” who “torched” the Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics, particularly principles of objectivity. He suggested the suspension was less about the content of Moran’s remarks and more about revealing his true perspective publicly, implying ABC News reporters harbor similar biases privately. Gainor framed the incident as part of a pattern of corporate media adopting a “journalist’s pose” while pushing liberal agendas, echoing sentiments from Miller and Vice President J.D. Vance, who called Moran’s post a “meltdown” exposing press bias.

Gainor’s critique also referenced ABC’s history, noting a New York Times report from August 2024 about Disney executive Dana Walden’s ties to then-Vice President Kamala Harris, suggesting a culture of political alignment at ABC. He argued that Moran’s history of anti-Trump comments, including comparing Trump to a “Führer” in 2017, further undermines ABC’s claim to objectivity.

Gainror made the case that ABC News is the same network "that took former Clinton flunky George Stephanopoulos and made him an anchor and pretends to this day that he’s a neutral journalist. This is the same network that almost singlehandedly killed presidential debates when the buffoonish duo of debate moderators David Muir and Linsey Davis attacked Trump."

The article sparked varied reactions. Liberal commentators, like Wajahat Ali and Joe Walsh, defended Moran, criticizing ABC for caving to political pressure and undermining press freedom. Others, including Miller and White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, praised the suspension, with Leavitt demanding accountability before it was announced. Gainor’s piece aligns with a conservative narrative questioning mainstream media impartiality, using Moran’s suspension to argue that ABC’s objectivity is a facade.
