8/21 WAKE-UP CALL: Hilary Ain't No Lady

Daily Mail Composite 8/21/23

Tropical Storm Hilary unleashed furious flash floods east and west of Los Angeles on Sunday as the system made its historic arrival in California after barreling through Mexico's Baja California peninsula with deadly force. One person died in Mexico amid reports of flash flooding in the peninsula, where some roads were swept away and images on social media showed raging torrents gushing down city streets that been turned into rivers.

California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for much of Southern California, with flash flood warnings in effect until at least 3 a.m. on Monday in a region that is more accustomed to drought.

Mountain and desert areas could get 5 to 10 inches of rain, as much as the deserts typically see in a year, forecasters said. The first tropical storm to pelt Los Angeles County since 1939 triggered serious flooding in the San Gabriel Mountains east of the city and coastal areas to the northwest in Ventura County. San Bernardino County ordered evacuations of a number of towns in the mountains and valleys where social media images showed torrents of water, mud, rock and trees.

➤'NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS': The storm stunned people in the nearby town of Rancho Mirage, where water and debris rushed over closed roads and stranded at least one pickup truck that was stuck in water nearly to the top of its bed. "It's quite amazing. I've never seen anything like this," said Sean Julian, 54, of Rancho Mirage. "I'm seeing a lot more trees down. And there's a big tree that just fell over there, and I probably shouldn't be out here." DJ Hilton of neighboring Cathedral City said: "We've had storms before, but never anything quite this windy and rainy at the same time."

At 8 p.m. PDT, Hilary was 105 miles northwest of San Diego, packing winds of 45 mph and moving to the north-northwest, the weather service said. Hundreds of flights in San Diego, Las Vegas and Los Angeles were canceled, and professional sporting matches rescheduled. The Los Angeles Unified School District and San Diego Unified School District, the two largest school districts in the state, canceled classes for Monday. Dangerous surf pounded the beaches in Southern California.

➤SOCAL QUAKE RATTLES: A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck near Ojai on Sunday, rattling the larger Southern California region as residents were dealing with intense rains from Tropical Storm Hilary. The temblor was felt across Southern California and hit at 2:41 p.m. Scott Thomsen, director of communications with the Ventura County Fire Department, said the department immediately implemented its earthquake plan that involves getting the trucks out of the firehouses. “So far,” he said, “we have no reports of damage, but we are checking.” Thomsen noted the quake came just as officials were bracing for Hilary: “We are in the middle of the first tropical storm since 1939, and we just had an earthquake.” Earthquake scientists were quick to make clear that Sunday’s temblor had nothing to do with the arrival of Hilary.

🔥WASHINGTON FIRE BURNS: In Spokane County, east Washington, the largest wildfire has razed 10,892 acres of land, destroying nearly 200 buildings and killing at least one person in its wake as thousands evacuated the danger zone. The blaze - known as Gray Fire - started around midday Friday on the west side of Medical Lake around 15 miles west of Spokane, and it's still spreading, Washington State Department of Natural Resources said. In an update Sunday, the department warned the blaze was still '0%' contained despite the efforts of firefighters, and it was engulfing more land towards the southwest. There are also 27 smaller wildfires raging over a combined 10,000 acres at scattered locations across the state.

➤FIRST FLASH-MOB ARREST MADE: Police have announced the first arrest in the recent 'flash mob' robbery at a Los Angeles area mall where 30 thieves got away with $400,000 in YSL merchandise. Ivan Isaac Ramirez, 23, was apprehended Thursday for his alleged involvement in the massive theft of a YSL store at the Glendale Americana at Brand.  Another suspect, Brianna Jimenez, 21, is still at large and is currently being sought by police. Her photo was released by cops over the weekend. No other suspects' names have been released or arrests have been made. Videos posted online from the August 8 robbery showed people in dark clothes and masks running into and then quickly out of the store. The YSL incident is the latest in a series of recent 'flash mob' style robberies where large groups overwhelm employees and grab as much as they can before fleeing.

➤NO-SHOW TRUMP: Donald Trump has confirmed he will not be appearing in the Fox News GOP presidential debates. There is growing speculation that he will instead do an interview with former Fox News Channel host Tucker Carlson. The former president said he will not be taking part in the Republican party debates because 'the public knows who I am and what a successful presidency I had'.

➤NETHERLANDS, DENMARK COMMIT TO DELIVERING F-16S TO UKRAINE: The Netherlands and Denmark will supply F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine with first deliveries due around New Year, the prime ministers of the two NATO countries announced on Sunday during visits by Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskiy. The pledge is the first real promise of F-16's for Ukraine's armed forces and comes a few days after the United States approved the possible delivery of the fighter jets by the two countries.

➤CALIFORNIA SHOP OWNER SHOT DEAD OVER LGBTQ+ PRIDE FLAG DISPLAYED AT STORE: A business owner in California was shot and killed after a dispute over a LGBTQ+ Pride flag displayed outside her store, authorities said. Officials from the San Bernardino county sheriff’s office said Laura Ann Carleton, 66, was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting on Friday night. Officials said that during an initial altercation at Carleton’s clothing store, a male suspect “made several disparaging remarks about a rainbow flag that stood outside the store before shooting Carleton”.

➤IN TALKS WITH PROSECUTORS, HUNTER BIDEN'S LAWYERS VOWED TO PUT THE PRESIDENT ON THE STAND: Hunter Biden's legal team once vowed to prosecutors that they would have President Joe Biden take the stand to testify as a fact witness for the defense if his son faced criminal charges. Biden's then-attorney Chris Clark made the claim in a letter to prosecutors in October 2022, shortly after news leaked that the Justice Department had enough evidence against the first son to move forward with an indictment. Clark warned that if the DOJ did bring charges relating to Hunter's alleged purchase of a firearm while addicted to cocaine, the president would take the stand.

TORI SPELLING IS HOSPITALIZED FOR AN UNKNOWN CONDITION: On Sunday, Tori Spelling took to her Instagram stories to let fans know that she is in the hospital. Sharing a photo of her hand hooked up to an IV, the 90210 actress wrote, "4th day here and I'm missing my kiddos so much … Grateful and so proud of my strong, brave, resilient, and kind to the core children who remain positive no matter what comes our way." Spelling’s hospital wristband revealed she was admitted on Thursday (August 17th). She did not yet reveal why she was hospitalized.

⚾MLB RED SOX 6 YANKEES 5: The Yankees extended a losing streak to eight for the first time in 28 years in large part because of an overturned call in the bottom of the eigth inning that went on to become the focus of attention. That overturned call ended up allowing Justin Turner´s ninth-inning go-ahead double in a 6-5 defeat to the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. 'We got to be unbelievable the rest of the way,' manager Aaron Boone said after the Yankees dropped to 60-64 and fell nine games behind Seattle for the AL´s last wild card spot.

⚾MLB NATIONALS 4 PHILLIES 3:  Washington's Trevor Williams threw six shutout innings to back up the Nationals' first-inning offense in a 4-3 victory against the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday night in the MLB Little League Classic in Williamsport, Pa. Relievers Jordan Weems, Hunter Harvey, Mason Thompson and Kyle Finnegan completed the combined six-hitter as the Nationals won for the seventh time in their last nine games. Washington scored all of its runs in the first inning and its pitchers kept the Phillies mostly under wraps -- unlike a day earlier when Philadelphia produced lots of late-game offense to even the three-game series with a 12-3 win. The Phillies scored three runs with two outs in the ninth on Sunday.

🏈 INJURY CUTS PRE-SEASON GAME SHORT: The Patriots and Packers had their preseason game Saturday night suspended early in the fourth quarter after New England rookie cornerback Isaiah Bolden absorbed a hit from a teammate that led to him being immobilized, placed on a stretcher and carted off the field. The Patriots said Bolden had "feeling in all his extremities" but will remain hospitalized in the Green Bay area overnight for observation. The team plans an update on his condition by 9 a.m. ET on Sunday. "We're all saying a prayer for Isaiah," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. "Appreciate the way the league handled it. I think that was the right thing to do." With 10:29 remaining in the fourth quarter, referee John Hussey announced to the crowd at Lambeau Field: "At the agreement of both head coaches and team leadership, we have elected to suspend play for the evening. The game is officially over."

🏈SOURCE: AARON RODGERS TO MAKE JETS DEBUT SATURDAY VS. GIANTS: Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who hasn't played in the preseason since 2018, will make his New York Jets debut Saturday against the New York Giants in the preseason finale, a source confirmed Sunday.
Rodgers, 39, has participated in every training camp practice, but he watched from the sideline as backup Zach Wilson started the first three games. The four-time MVP will get a quick tuneup before the Jets face the Buffalo Bills in the Sept. 11 season opener on "Monday Night Football."

🏈SOURCE: COWBOYS LB DEMARVION OVERSHOWN AS TORN ACL: Dallas Cowboys rookie linebacker DeMarvion Overshown suffered a torn ACL in his left knee in the first quarter of Saturday's preseason loss to the Seattle Seahawks, according to a source. Overshown was hurt while making a tackle in the second series of the game when the knee appeared to buckle. He was able to walk off the field on his own but was taken to the locker room via a cart and did not return to the game. An MRI on Sunday confirmed the team's fears on Saturday night.
