After closing its second year of profits, the 140-year-old The Washington Post is poised to expand its newsroom and business operations, reports MediaPost.
In a brief sent to employees, Post publisher Fred Ryan stated the paper has seen record digital subscriptions. In fact, digital subscriptions have tripled since 2016, and the newspaper now has more than 1 million paid digital subscribers.
In an era when the promise of digital advertising dollars has dimmed, the newspaper reports exceeding its revenue targets. In 2017, digital advertising dollars contributed more overall revenue to the paper than ever before.
The combination of record subscribers and advertising dollars position the paper for further expansions, which includes acquiring more space in its building to accommodate a growing newsroom of more than 800 employees.
Since the paper was purchased by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos in 2013, the business and technology sectors of the paper have taken new precedent.
