The Voice, 'Idol' To Compete Head-To-Head

ABC isn’t shy about its American Idol reboot, announcing today that the show will face off directly against The Voice, its biggest music competition revival, when Idol debuts in March.

The new version of American Idol—featuring returning host Ryan Seacrest and new judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie—will air two-hour episodes on Sundays and Mondays at 8 p.m., beginning March. 11. American Idol ran for 15 seasons on Fox before going off in the air in 2016, but just one year later, ABC announced it would be reviving the series in a controversial move that was openly questioned by its broadcast rivals.

NBC had previously announced that The Voice’s spring cycle—which will feature one of Idol’s most famous alums, Kelly Clarkson—will premiere on Monday, Feb. 26, two weeks ahead of Idol.

In contrast to Idol’s aggressive move, Fox steered clear of both American Idol and The Voice when scheduling its own new music competition series, The Four, during midseason. That show premiered last week and will conclude its season before The Voice and Idol debut.

With Idol taking over on Mondays in March after The Bachelor, ABC is delaying its next installment of Dancing With the Stars—which would normally air in that timeframe—until Monday, April 30. The celeb lineup for that season will be comprised entirely of athletes.
