CNN Digital is “embarking on a strategic restructuring,” according to a note this morning from Andrew Morse, executive vice president of editorial, CNN U.S. & general manager of CNN Digital Worldwide. As journalists have learned all too well over the past decade or so, that term — “restructuring” — often means “people are out of a job.”
Indeed: Upwards of 50 staffers at CNN Digital will see their jobs eliminated under the plan, according to
The Washington Post.

Yet the outfit will add more than 200 jobs — for a net gain of about 150 staffers — that will cut CNN Digital from its tether to a traditional website model and push it toward all those other platforms — mobile! — where folks are actually consuming their news these days. “The investments will span both product and editorial teams and charge the creation of entirely new units and capabilities in key areas for CNN,” notes Morse.
He specified these areas as receiving “investment”:
- Global Expansion
- Audience Development and Analytics
- Mobile Product Development
- Mobile and Off-Platform Programming
- CNN Digital Studios and CNNMoney
- An entirely new video experience
- Premium content areas such as Style, Tech and Health
Staffers who lose their existing jobs as part of this initiative are invited to apply for the new ones created under the plan.
