The sixth game of the NBA Finals, where the Toronto Raptors dethroned the depleted Golden State Warriors, was seen by 18.76 million viewers in the United States, according to The Associated Press citing the Nielsen data. Report: CBS Planning Offer For Viacom

CBS Corp. is preparing to make an offer for sister media company Viacom Inc. in the coming weeks, following a meeting of CBS directors last week in which a potential deal was discussed, according to The Wall Street Journal citing people familiar with the situation.

Representatives of CBS and Viacom have already had preliminary discussions about the outlines of a deal, one of the people said.

If the companies move ahead with talks, it would be a third attempt to reunite the $30 billion media empire that was divided by mogul Sumner Redstone more than 13 years ago.

A deal is far from certain. Determining the price for a stock transaction—which requires setting a value for the companies relative to each other—is one major hurdle.

Picking a new leadership team is another challenge. Viacom Chief Executive Bob Bakish is widely believed by people close to the process to be in pole position to become CEO of the combined company. There is debate and discussion already about how the rest of the management team would fill out, people familiar with the situation said.

Shari Redstone, vice chairman of both companies, believes that CBS and Viacom would be better positioned to compete with larger rivals as one company. She is president of National Amusements Inc., which controls both CBS and Viacom.

Viacom has been the weaker of the two companies over the past several years, having suffered as cable-TV cord-cutting pulled down ratings for its major networks. A merger with CBS would give Viacom greater scale and more leverage in negotiations with advertisers and cable-TV providers.

CBS, which has been propelled by sports and some broadcast-TV hits, could stand to benefit from cable networks owned by Viacom that reach younger audiences, such as Nickelodeon and MTV.

CBS has had challenges, too. The company has had an acting CEO, Joseph Ianniello, since former Chief Executive Leslie Moonves was forced to step down last year in response to allegations of sexual assault and harassment. Mr. Moonves has denied the allegations.

CBS is also battling flagging ratings at its news division and recently reshuffled the lineup of anchors at its flagship news shows under new news president Susan Zirinsky.

Las Vegas Fire Destroys Offices of Nevada Broadcasters

A massive fire destroyed an 84,000-square-foot business complex near the Strip on Monday and left a haze of smoke hovering over the central Las Vegas Valley.  Also detroyed were the offices of the Nevada Broadcasters Assocition, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Clark County Fire Chief Greg Cassell said no sprinklers had been installed in the two-story structure, and it was unclear if the building’s smoke detectors were working because the Fire Department was never contacted by an alarm monitoring company. The fire was reported by someone staying at a nearby La Quinta Inn & Suites.

When firefighters arrived at the scene around 3 a.m., they found the intersection in front of the complex flooded with smoke, Cassell said. Visibility was reduced to a few hundred feet, and crews initially were not sure which building was on fire.

Cassell said the fire may have started in the building’s common attic, which had no smoke detectors, and could have been burning for hours before anyone noticed.

“You take things for granted,” Mitch Fox, president and CEO of the Nevada Broadcasters Association, said. “We don’t think there’s anything that important in an office, but there’s personal mementos, awards, signed photos, things that can’t be replaced.”

He said the loss of the association’s office was saddening, but his staff is already picking up the pieces and moving forward.

“Think if this had happened 15, 20 years ago, or even just 10 years ago,” he said. “Every business has paper files, but now we have DropBox, the cloud, the internet. We didn’t lose everything.”

Fox said the silver lining of the fire, if there is one, is the support he’s seen from the community. He said he’s received numerous calls from people, including broadcast station managers, county commissioners and Mayor Carolyn Goodman, offering up office space and resources while the association gets back on its feet.

Cassell recommended that all business owners back up their important documents to a cloud server in case of a fire emergency.

Boston Radio: That Didn't Take Long..Kirk Minihane In Trouble

Kirk Minihane
Somerville, MA Mayor Joe Curtatone is suing Boston sports commentator Kirk Minihane and website Barstool Sports, accusing both of violating state wiretapping statutes.

According to WBUR Radio, the civil lawsuit comes after a few weeks of a public back-and-forth on social media between Curtatone and David Portnoy, president of Barstool Sports, a site aimed at young men that has long been controversial.

According to the complaint, filed in Middlesex Superior Court Monday, the conflict between Curtatone and Barstool Sports began at the end of May during the Stanley Cup Final. Curtatone condemned the site after Jessica Heslam of The Boston Herald criticized the Boston Bruins for partnering with the site for Bruins towels handed out to fans at Game 2.

Portnoy shot back on Twitter and on Barstool Sports, saying "Joe Curtatone appears to be a professional criminal. Like a real life mob boss," and posting screenshots of headlines that ran in local media about Curtatone and his family.

Curtatone's complaint says Kirk Minihane, working for Barstool, called the mayor's office pretending to be The Boston Globe's Kevin Cullen. This ruse worked and Curtatone did speak to Minihane over the telephone, believing him to be Cullen.

The complaint states: "Minihane, posing as Cullen, asked for Mayor Curtatone's consent to record him during the interview by stating, 'I'm just going to record this so we have it, is that good?' Mayor Curtatone, believing that he was speaking to a representative of a legitimate news organization, the Boston Globe, responded 'no problem.' "

Curtatone spoke to Minihane for about 20 minutes, and Barstool posted the audio and a video of Minihane on its site, titling it "Kirk Minhane AKA 'Kevin Cullen from The Boston Globe' Interviews Somerville Mayor Joe Curtatone."

This action, says Curtatone, violated Massachusetts wiretapping laws; because Minihane lied about who he was, Curtatone says he did not consent to the interview being recorded.

Country Artist Luke Combs Ties Johnny Cash Record

Just a week after being invited to be the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry, Luke Combs continues to break records by charting five tracks from his new EP, The Prequel, on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs Top 25—a feat not accomplished by any artist in since Johnny Cash in 1959. The tracks are also in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Country Songs Sales chart.

Additionally, Combs has achieved the largest streaming week ever for a country artist and currently holds the top two spots on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart with The Prequel (No. 1) and his debut album, This One’s For You (No. 2).

Produced by Scott Moffatt, The Prequel features five songs co-written by Combs including lead single, “Beer Never Broke My Heart” which debuted at No. 2 on Billboard’s Country Streaming Songs chart with 11 million streams—setting the record for the best first week of streaming ever for a country song. It also recently set the record for most adds on the Mediabase/Country Aircheck chart with 149 adds and debuted at No. 15 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart—the top entrance by any artist since September 2012 and Combs’ highest debut to date.

Here's a complete rundown, courtesy of Billboard:

Luke Combs on Hot Country Songs, June 22, 2019
No. 3, "Beer Never Broke My Heart"
No. 12, "Even Though I'm Leaving"
No. 19, "Lovin' On You"
No. 20, "Refrigerator Door"
No. 21, "Moon Over Mexico"

Since Billboard's Hot Country Songs began as an all-encompassing genre songs tally in October 1958 (today, it blends streaming, airplay and sales data), the iconic Cash is the only other act to have charted five songs in the top 25 simultaneously. Cash did so for three weeks, on charts dated May 11, 18 and 25, 1959. Here's how the songs ranked in the last of those frames:

Johnny Cash on Hot Country Songs, May 25, 1959
No. 8, "Luther Played the Boogie"
No. 11, "Frankie's Man, Johnny"
No. 14, "You Dreamer You"
No. 15, "Thanks a Lot"
No. 20, "Don't Take Your Guns to Town"

CNN Acosta Claims Fox News Gets ‘Scripts’ From TWH

Hugh Hewitt
CNN White House correspondent Jim Acosta claimed during a Tuesday morning radio interview that Fox News hosts were getting show scripts written by the Trump administration, reports The Washington Beacon.

Acosta appeared to surprise radio host Hugh Hewitt with his contention that Fox News hosts were getting their scripts from the White House, which came during Hewitt's attempt to tamp down criticism of networks on both sides of the political spectrum in the United States.

"I don't work for Fox, I don't work for CNN, I work for NBC, but I have worked with CNN and I regret the use of fake news and propaganda, because I think there's a spectrum of journalism in the United States," Hewitt said. "Many of us are opinion journalists, some of us are straight news journalists, other people move back and forth, but none of us are in the business of state TV, which is the old Pravda, none of us get script from the government, none of us do that."

Acosta interrupted Hewitt to accuse Fox News of getting scripts from the White House.

"You don't think they get scripts?" Acosta said. "You don't think they get a script that night when they come on?"

"Absolutely not," Hewitt responded. "Do you think they actually get a script from the White House, Jim?"

Hewitt pointed out he often discusses Trump accomplishments, such as getting Constitutional originalists put on the courts, but it's not because he is receiving talking points from the White House.

Acosta also complained during the interview that Fox News hosts Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson won't have him on their shows.

"They're willing to go off on me on their shows, but they're not willing to have me on in person to defend myself," Acosta said.

June 19 Radio History

➦In 1912...Narrator and actor Martin Gabel was born in Philadelphia.

His signature work was on May 8, 1945 as narrator on the CBS radio broadcast of Norman Corwin’s epic poem On a Note of Triumph, a commemoration of the fall of the Nazi regime in Germany and the end of WW II in Europe. The broadcast was so popular that the CBS, NBC, Blue and Mutual networks aired a second live production five days later.  He was the most frequent guest on TV’s Sunday night fixture What’s My Line, because he was married to regular panelist Arlene Francis.

He died after a heart attack May 22 1986 at age 73.

➦In 1934...Communications Act of 1934 created Federal Communications Commission

➦In 1962...WMCA 570 began using “The Good Guys”.   Led by program director Ruth Meyer, the first woman to hold the position in New York City radio, this was the era of the high-profile Top 40 disc jockey with an exuberant personality aimed at a certain audience segment. With the advent of the Good Guys format, WMCA became more "on top" of new music and started to become known for "playing the hits."

➦In 1965...Since WINS went all-news in April, New York’s remaining rockers have been going at it - head to head. It’s the WMCA Good Guys vs. the WABC All-Americans.

The post-WINS Pulse ratings showed the stations neck-in-neck - WABC at a 16 and WMCA at a 16.3 rating. But WMCA has about one-third the signal of WABC, so it performs better with no WMCA competition - in the outlying suburbs.

WMCA was running a “Good Guy Derby” contest where you have the guess the WMCA Good Guy who will win his race “in the sport of kings.” Go-Go radio, WABC is doing a “prize of the day” A prize a day goes into the “Go Go Grab Bag” for end-week awarding.

Both stations were battling airplay of the new Beatles album -“Beatles VI” - and both stations were saying they had the exclusive on the album.  Actually, WABC had the album three hours before WMCA did - a rarity. WMCA usually scoops WABC on most records, including the Beatles.

➦In 1966...WOR 98.7 FM said it will drop duplicating talk WOR 710 AM on June 30 and go rock ‘n’ roll - the first FM station to go full-time rock . Robert S. Smith, vice president of both WOR AM/FMsays - “We will not have shouting disk jockeys on FM, but if there can be a quality rock station, that is, what we will be. We’re going after the WABC and WMCA audience.” The change in policy is a result of a recent FCC rule that FM stations in major cities may no longer duplicate more than 50% of their AM affiliates.

➦In 1966...Isaiah Edwin Leopold died from throat cancer at age 79 (Born - November 9, 1886). He was best known as Ed Wynn, noted for his Perfect Fool comedy character, his pioneering radio show of the 1930s, and his later career as a dramatic actor.

Ed Wynn
In the early 1930s Wynn hosted the popular radio show The Fire Chief,  heard in North America on Tuesday nights, sponsored by Texaco gasoline. Like many former vaudeville performers who turned to radio in the same decade, the stage-trained Wynn insisted on playing for a live studio audience, doing each program as an actual stage show, using visual bits to augment his written material, and in his case, wearing a colorful costume with a red fireman's helmet.

He usually bounced his gags off announcer/straight man Graham McNamee; Wynn's customary opening, "Tonight, Graham, the show's gonna be different," became one of the most familiar tag-lines of its time; a sample joke: "Graham, my uncle just bought a new second-handed car... he calls it Baby! I don't know, it won't go anyplace without a rattle!"

Near the height of his radio fame (1933) he founded his own short-lived radio network the Amalgamated Broadcasting System, which lasted only five weeks, nearly destroying the comedian. According to radio historian Elizabeth McLeod, the failed venture left Wynn deep in debt, divorced and finally, suffering a nervous breakdown.

Ed Wynn first appeared on television on July 7, 1936 in a brief, ad-libbed spot with Graham McNamee during an NBC experimental television broadcast. In the 1949–50 season, Ed Wynn hosted one of the first network, comedy-variety television shows, on CBS, and won both a Peabody Award and an Emmy Award in 1949. Buster Keaton, Lucille Ball, and The Three Stooges all made guest appearances with Wynn. This was the first CBS variety television show to originate from Los Angeles, which was seen live on the west coast, but filmed via kinescope for distribution in the Midwest and East, as the national coaxial cable had yet to be completed. Wynn was also a rotating host of NBC's Four Star Revue from 1950 through 1952.

➦In 1973...Wolfman Jack, heard on KDAY Los Angles announced he's going to WNBC 660 AM, New York.

➦In 1973...93 KHJ AM program director Paul Drew confirmed that the Real Don Steele and Mark Eliot had departed the station.

Billboard 1973
➦In 1973...89 WLS  program director Tommy Edwards said the station is expanding its playlist and is cutting back on the use of jingles to five key jingles. Plus, - elimination of meaningless chatter by jocks, day-parting of music (more rock at night for example). WCFL was giving WLS a run in the ratings.

Dixon's Wrecked Auto
➦In 2005...legendary southern DJ, Mason Dixon, was injured in an auto accident which practically split his car apart.

Dixon suffered a collapsed lung, 2 broken ribs and a ruptured spleen. Dixon has been affiliated with legendary stations including Tampa's WRBQ-FM, where he was still employed at the time of his accident.

When his wife finally showed him pictures of his prized 1971 Dodge Challenger convertible, split in half in a crash over the weekend, there were more tears.

"There were angels watching out for me," he told reporters huddled around his bed at St. Joseph's Hospital. "They wanted me to learn something, and I have. Now, I've got to go back out there and do their work. And I'll be happy to."

Dixon, 55, whose real name is Jimmie Crawford, was critically injured after leaving a Father's Day promotional event.

➦In 2009…Radio/TV announcer Ken Roberts died of pneumonia at age 99 (Born - February 22, 1910). He was best known for his work during the Golden Age of Radio and for his work announcing the daytime television soap operas The Secret Storm, Texas and Love of Life, each for a two-decade span.

Ken Roberts
His first announcing job was at WMCA in New York lasting three weeks. Next at WLTH in Brooklyn. In an interview for the book The Great American Broadcast, Roberts told Leonard Maltin that he had started at the Brooklyn station in 1930, where his responsibilities included answering phones and sweeping the floors, in addition to on-air roles playing piano and reading poetry.

During the 1930s and 1940s, at the height of the radio era, Roberts' voice appeared widely in live programming to introduce programs, moderate game shows and do live reads for commercials. Despite his Errol Flynn-like good looks and the frequent broadcasts featuring his voice, as often as several times each day, few listeners knew who he was or would have recognized him in public.

Radio credits include The Shadow (including the 1937-38 season on the Mutual Broadcasting System with a 22-year-old Orson Welles starring in the role of Lamont Cranston), the comedy Easy Aces, along with soap operas Joyce Jordan, M.D. and This is Nora Drake. He also announced or hosted a number of game shows, such as What's My Name? and the parody It Pays to Be Ignorant, in which he would pose questions to actors portraying contestants such as "Who came first: Henry I or Henry VIII?" that would be answered incorrectly.

In 1941, he achieved his goal of hosting his own quiz show, with Quick As a Flash on the Mutual network. Among the elements of the program, Roberts would dramatize an historic event which contestants would have to correctly identify. Other prizes were awarded for identifying the common element in three songs played by the orchestra and for solving descriptions of staged crimes.

On television, he was the original announcer for Candid Camera and introduced popular soap operas Love of Life from 1951 to 1980, The Secret Storm from 1954 to 1974 and Texas from 1980 to 1982. On Jan Murray's comedy game show Dollar a Second, Robert's on-air duties included advertisements for sponsor Mogen David wines.

He was also one of the founders of the broadcast performers' union now known as AFTRA.

Nielsen: All Ages Listen To Radio

The original electronic media, radio continues to reach more Americans than any other platform measured by Nielsen. Among adults 18+, radio reaches 92% of U.S. adults every week, according to the just-released Audio Today report from Nielsen.

Radio is in high demand and according to Nielsen, it has a diverse listenership when considering how many people tune in across age, gender and ethnicity.

Not surprisingly, adults 18-49 are the demographic that tunes in the most. The monthly reach for these listeners is 132.4 million (98% of the population), and Country is the format they prefer most. Adults 25-54 are the second most reached demographic for radio, with 123.6 million (99%) of the population listening each month.

When we look at these demographics by gender, listenership remains strong. Both women and men 18-49 use radio in large numbers, with their listenership nearly equal at 65.9 million (97%) and 65.4 million (98%), respectively. And again, Country is the top format for both genders.

Radio’s popularity also extends to teens, reaching 93% of the U.S. population monthly. That translates to 23.3 million 12-17 year-olds who tune in to radio each month. With this young demographic, Pop Contemporary Hit Radio (CHR) is the top format of choice while Country ranks number two. Black and Hispanic adults are also easily reached by radio—98% of each group listens on a monthly basis, which translates to 35.1 million Black listeners and 45.6 million Hispanic listeners.

DOJ Settles With 5 Broadcasters

A group of five television station owners on Monday agreed to settle Justice Department charges that they used third-party firms to illegally coordinate on sales of local advertising spots, reports The Wall Street Journal.

CBS Corp., Cox Enterprises Inc., E.W. Scripps Co., Fox Corp., and Tegna Inc. all agreed to consent decrees barring them from sharing certain competitively sensitive information for the next seven years, according to court documents filed Monday. In addition, each company is required to adopt rigorous antitrust compliance and reporting measures.

Court papers didn’t indicate any financial penalties as part of the settlement.

The Justice Department alleged the TV station owners shared advertising information among themselves regarding spot advertising revenues in local markets.

Pricing for spot advertising is negotiated by advertisers and the companies, and often, the advertisers “play off” the stations against each other to receive competitive revenues. Cox’s sales rep firm, Cox Reps Inc., is among the top two sales reps firms that represents hundreds of stations throughout the U.S. The Justice Department alleges Cox Reps, another sales rep firm and the stations shared station-specific revenue pacing data.

The government said such pacing data, which compares sales bookings against prior-year results, gave station owners insights into each station’s remaining spot ad inventory.

The civil complaint alleged the data was shared two ways: both through the sales reps firms and, in some regions, directly between station employees.

The civil complaint against CBS, Cox and the other companies was filed in December, along with similar settlements with six other station owners. At the time, Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc., Tribune Media Co., Raycom Media Inc., Meredith Corp., Griffin Communications LLC and Dreamcatcher Broadcasting LLC agreed to similar consent decrees.

Authorities caught wind of the ad-sales firms’ sharing information on their clients’ behalf last year during a previously unrelated review of Sinclair’s plans to acquire Tribune, which later never went through.

Report: Strong Pace For TV Transactions, Radio Maintains

Through the end of May, BIA Kelsey reports TV station transactions were noticeably up as compared to last year’s levels. Some of that increase is tied to the spin-off of some of the Tribune stations that Nexstar is poised to acquire.

Yet, the acquisitions of Terrier Media Holdings, as well as the Gray Television acquisitions, has led to nearly $5.2 billion in sales through the end of May (as compared to the $82 million at the same time last year). The June 12th announcement of Tegna acquiring the Dispatch television stations will only add to that increasing 2019 total.

Faced with the increased competition for both audiences and advertiser clients, television groups need to become more efficient by acquiring more stations. These acquisitions will allow these television stations to better compete in this ever-changing environment.

In contrast, the level of radio station transactions in 2019 are generally at the same level as in previous years (265 stations for $293 million vs. 252 stations $231 million in 2018).

The biggest sale so far this year was Cumulus Media’s $103.5 million spin-off of six FMs to Educational Media Foundation, including stations in the New York, Atlanta, San Jose and Washington, DC markets.

Many radio groups are constrained by the local ownership regulations that prevent them from purchasing more local stations. If those regulations are relaxed, as has been suggested, we would certainly see a pickup in the number of transactions.

Comcast+Charter+Cox To Advance Targeted Advertising

Cable provider Comcast Corp on Tuesday launched a program to further develop an advertising strategy that better targets audiences, as the TV industry looks to lure more advertisers away from digital players like Facebook Inc and Alphabet Inc’s Google, reports Reuters.

The initiative, called “On Addressability,” aims to create standards for addressable advertising, which targets ads to certain households based on their interests. It has so far been done only on a small scale in TV advertising.

Comcast said it will partner with two other cable providers, Charter Communications and Cox Media, the ad division of Cox Communications, to pool what they have learned from offering addressable advertising, help other content distributors do the same, including how to ensure customer data is used in ways that comply with privacy standards.

While TV is still the best way to reach large numbers of people at one time, it has lacked the targeting, data and measurement that digital platforms like Facebook offer advertisers, said Marcien Jenckes, president of advertising for Comcast Cable.

“TV is often looked at as the lowest common denominator medium (in advertising), and unless addressability is achieved at scale, we’re going to fall short,” he said in an interview.
