President Joe Biden said on Thursday evening that Vladimir Putin was not joking about using nuclear weapons in Ukraine, and said the risk of of Armageddon was the highest it had been since the Cuban missile crisis.
He delivered his doomsday warning at a fundraising event for Democrats at the New York home of James Murdoch, son of media mogul Rupert.
It comes amid growing fears that Putin is backed into a corner and could use tactical nuclear weapons to push back advancing Ukrainian forces.
'We’ve got a guy I know fairly well,' said Biden said at the reception for the reception for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. 'He's not joking when he talks about potential use of tactical nuclear weapons or biological or chemical weapons because his military is — you might say — significantly underperforming.' Don't be fooled by the idea that smaller, tactical weapons were not a major threat to the world, he continued at the reception for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. 'I don't think there's any such thing as the ability to easily [use] a tactical nuclear weapon and not end up with Armageddon,' he said.
The Kremlin has warned of potentially 'monstrous consequences' after Volodymyr Zelensky appeared to suggest NATO powers should bomb Russia to deter Vladimir Putin from employing his nuclear arsenal against Ukraine. Russia said such comments risked starting 'yet another world war' after the Ukrainian president seemed to tell Australian think tank the Lowy Institute that he believed 'preemptive strikes' on Russian territory were necessary.
However Kyiv later insisted he was actually calling for 'preemptive sanctions', just as he did 'before February 24', when the invasion was launched. It comes as an increasingly desperate Putin continues to suffer losses in the south and east of Ukraine ahead of his 70th birthday on Friday and amid alleged serious health conditions - leading many analysts to fear he will use 'tactical nuclear weapons' in a bid to secure a victory.
The dictator previously hinted at their use, saying on September 21: 'When its territorial integrity is threatened, Russia will use everything it can, this is not a bluff.' Speaking in an online video on Thursday, Zelensky said: 'What should NATO do? Make it impossible for Russia to use nuclear weapons.' He added: 'What is important, I once again appeal to the international community, as I did before February 24: We need pre-emptive strikes so that (the Russians) know what will happen to them if they use them (nuclear weapons), and not the other way around.'

The final decision on whether to bring a case against the 52-year-old son of President Biden will be made by Delaware US Attorney David Weiss, who was appointed to his current post by former President Donald Trump.
The Washington Post, citing people familiar with the investigation, reported that agents had determined months ago that they had assembled a viable criminal case against Hunter Biden. The newspaper reported that the investigation, which started by focusing on Hunter’s overseas business dealings revealed in a series of reports by The Post in the fall of 2020, has shifted to whether he reported all his income from foreign transactions.

The president also ordered a review of the designation of marijuana as a “Class A substance” under federal law. That is the same classification used for heroin, and higher than the classification for fentanyl or methamphetamine. Online rumors spread immediately that Biden had legalized marijuana. He didn’t.

➤MASSACRE OF CHILDREN ROCKS THAILAND: A former policeman wielding a knife and a gun killed 36 people, most of them children, at a daycare center in Thailand yesterday. He then went home, where he killed his wife and stepson before killing himself. Thai officials said the man had been suspended from his job due to possession of drugs. The attack occurred in a northeastern province of the country.
➤FLORIDA RESIDENTS GET FIRST LOOK AT IAN’S DAMAGE: Residents of some of the Florida towns that were hit worst by Hurricane Ian got their first look at the damage yesterday. Authorities permitted residents of Sanibel, Captiva, and Pine islands to return to their homes for the first time since the storm hit. They had to travel by motorboat since a causeway is still being repaired. More than 200,000 people in Florida still don’t have power because of infrastructure damage.
➤ABORTION SERVICES ELIMINATED IN 15 STATES: An estimated 66 clinics in 15 states have stopped offering abortion services since the Supreme Court overturned federal protection for the procedure, according to a research organization that supports abortion rights. About 26 of the clinics closed down altogether, while others moved to other states or stayed open to provide other services. The clinics are in states that have imposed bans on the procedure in nearly all cases. Texas had the most closures.

➤US SENATOR BEN SASSE TO RESIGN: U.S. Senator Ben Sasse, a Nebraska Republican, is expected to resign from the Senate to become president of the University of Florida, CNN reported yesterday. Sasse was reelected in 2020. He is one of seven Republicans who voted to convict former President Trump in his second impeachment trial. If Sasse resigns, he would be replaced by an interim appointee selected by Nebraska’s governor.

🏈WHO’S SUING WHO? Remember the protester who was tackled by Los Angeles Rams linebacker Bobby Wagner after running onto the field waving a pink smoke bomb during the second quarter? He’s suing Wagner for assault. Wagner and teammate Takkarist McKinley grabbed the protester and held him until security took over. The animal rights protester went straight to the Santa Clara Police Department the next day to file a report about the “blatant assault” on him. Asked about the matter, Wagner said he is more concerned about a security guard who was hurt during the incident.
🏈FROM PIZZA SHOP TO THE NFL: A young man whose last job was a part-time stint in a North Dakota pizza parlor has just been signed as an offensive tackle to the New England Patriots’ practice squad. Sebastian Gutierrez was a 23-year-old free agent who played for Minot State. Losson Leonard, owner of Uncle Maddio’s Pizza, had only kind words to say about his former counter guy. “I think he’ll do well. I think once they let him in the door, he’ll ever come out,” Leonard told North Dakota television station KFYR.
