The Washington Post, citing people familiar with the investigation, reported that agents had determined months ago that they had assembled a viable criminal case against Hunter Biden. The newspaper reported that the investigation, which started by focusing on Hunter’s overseas business dealings revealed in a series of reports by The Post in the fall of 2020, has shifted to whether he reported all his income from foreign transactions.
The president also ordered a review of the designation of marijuana as a “Class A substance” under federal law. That is the same classification used for heroin, and higher than the classification for fentanyl or methamphetamine. Online rumors spread immediately that Biden had legalized marijuana. He didn’t.
➤PROUD BOYS LEADER PLEADS GUILTY TO SEDITIOUS CONSPIRACY: A leader of the far-right extremist group Proud Boys pleaded guilty to federal charges of seditious conspiracy related to the January 6th 2020 riots at the U.S. Capitol. Jeremy Bertino is reported to be cooperating with the Justice Department investigation into the group’s activities. Bertino was not at the January 6th, 2020 riot at the U.S. Capitol but was apparently involved in its planning and execution. Bertino may be eligible for witness protection, according to his plea agreement.

➤MAYHEM ON THE LAS VEGAS STRIP: Two people were stabbed to death and six more were wounded by a single attacker armed with a kitchen knife on the Las Vegas strip yesterday. Witnesses said that some of the victims were showgirls who pose for pictures with tourists outside the casinos. A suspect has been arrested.

➤MASSACRE OF CHILDREN ROCKS THAILAND: A former policeman wielding a knife and a gun killed 36 people, most of them children, at a daycare center in Thailand yesterday. He then went home, where he killed his wife and stepson before killing himself. Thai officials said the man had been suspended from his job due to possession of drugs. The attack occurred in a northeastern province of the country.
➤FLORIDA RESIDENTS GET FIRST LOOK AT IAN’S DAMAGE: Residents of some of the Florida towns that were hit worst by Hurricane Ian got their first look at the damage yesterday. Authorities permitted residents of Sanibel, Captiva, and Pine islands to return to their homes for the first time since the storm hit. They had to travel by motorboat since a causeway is still being repaired. More than 200,000 people in Florida still don’t have power because of infrastructure damage.
➤ABORTION SERVICES ELIMINATED IN 15 STATES: An estimated 66 clinics in 15 states have stopped offering abortion services since the Supreme Court overturned federal protection for the procedure, according to a research organization that supports abortion rights. About 26 of the clinics closed down altogether, while others moved to other states or stayed open to provide other services. The clinics are in states that have imposed bans on the procedure in nearly all cases. Texas had the most closures.

➤JANUARY 6TH COMMITTEE SCHEDULES HEARING: The House committee investigating the January 6th riot at the U.S. Capitol has set next Thursday, October 13th, for its next televised public hearing. The hearing is expected to be the committee’s last before it issues its report and recommendations.

🏈WHO’S SUING WHO? Remember the protester who was tackled by Los Angeles Rams linebacker Bobby Wagner after running onto the field waving a pink smoke bomb during the second quarter? He’s suing Wagner for assault. Wagner and teammate Takkarist McKinley grabbed the protester and held him until security took over. The animal rights protester went straight to the Santa Clara Police Department the next day to file a report about the “blatant assault” on him. Asked about the matter, Wagner said he is more concerned about a security guard who was hurt during the incident.
🏈FROM PIZZA SHOP TO THE NFL: A young man whose last job was a part-time stint in a North Dakota pizza parlor has just been signed as an offensive tackle to the New England Patriots’ practice squad. Sebastian Gutierrez was a 23-year-old free agent who played for Minot State. Losson Leonard, owner of Uncle Maddio’s Pizza, had only kind words to say about his former counter guy. “I think he’ll do well. I think once they let him in the door, he’ll ever come out,” Leonard told North Dakota television station KFYR.
