Wake-Up Call: Biden..If It's Monday, I Must Be In Scotland


President Biden is heading to the U.N. climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland, today, after attending the G20 summit in Rome over the weekend. Among the positives that came out of the G20 was Biden getting a commitment from his fellow leaders on a global minimum corporate tax and patching up differences with the European Union on tariffs, but Biden said Sunday that he found the summit's outcome "disappointing" when it came to climate change, which will be the focus of the Glasgow gathering. He said, "The disappointment relates to the fact that Russia, and ... not only Russia, but China basically didn’t show up in terms of any commitments to deal with climate changes." In a speech at what's being billed as a crucial climate summit, Biden will review the past year of U.S. climate efforts and announce new climate initiatives.
 
➤'WASHINGTON POST': FBI DIDN'T ACT ON TIPS AHEAD OF JAN. 6TH CAPITOL ATTACK: The FBI and other law enforcement agencies didn't act on many tips and other information they received ahead of the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol, the Washington Post reported Sunday. The report said one of the tips came into the FBI on December 20th, and said supporters of then-President Donald Trump were talking online about how to sneak guns into Washington, D.C., to overrun police and arrest members of Congress who'd be gathered to certify the results of the presidential election. The Post said the FBI passed on the information to law enforcement agencies in Washington, but didn't pursue the matter.


➤BIDEN POLLING TANKS:   A majority of Americans now disapprove of President Joe Biden's job performance, while half give him low marks for competence and uniting the country, according to results from the latest national NBC News poll.


What's more, the survey finds that 7 in 10 adults, including almost half of Democrats, believe the nation is headed in the wrong direction, as well as nearly 60 percent who view Biden's stewardship of the economy negatively just nine months into his presidency.


➤MAN WITH KNIFE IN JOKER COSTUME INJURES 17 PEOPLE ON TOKYO TRAIN, STARTS FIRE: A man in a Joker costume stabbed at least one person on a Tokyo commuter train with a knife Sunday and started a fire after pouring an oil-like liquid from a bottle. Seventeen people were injured in the incident, three of them seriously. Not all of them were stabbed, however, with many apparently injured as they tried to escape, including by jumping from windows. The attacker, identified as 24-year-old Kyota Hattori, was arrested at the scene and was being investigated on suspicion of attempted murder. Police cited him as saying he wanted to kill people and get the death penalty.


🛪AMERICAN AIRLINES CANCELS MORE THAN 1,500 FLIGHTS OVER THE WEEKEND: American Airlines canceled 634 flights on Sunday, which is about 12 percent of its operations for the day, adding to the total of more than 1,500 of the airline's flights that were canceled since Friday. The problems began with severe winds on Thursday and Friday in Dallas-Fort Worth, American's largest hub, that sharply affected arrival capacity. The effect then rippled through the system, particularly as the airline is dealing with some staffing shortages. American said in a statement Saturday to CNN, "With additional weather throughout the system, our staffing begins to run tight as crew members end up out of their regular flight sequences."

🛬SOUTHWEST AIRLINES INVESTIGATING AFTER PILOT USED SUBSTITUTE PHRASE FOR PROFANE BIDEN INSULT: Southwest Airlines said yesterday that it's investigating after one of its pilots used a phrase during his greeting to passengers during a flight last week that's become a meme among conservatives as a substitute for a profane insult of President Biden. The probe was announced after the Associated Press reported on the incident, in which an AP reporter on the flight from Houston to Albuquerque on Friday said the use of the phrase during the announcement drew gasps from some passengers. In the meme, "Let's go, Brandon," is a stand-in for "F*** Joe Biden." Southwest said that it would continue, quote, "to remind all Employees that public expression of personal opinions while on duty is unacceptable."

🛫BUTTIGIEG..FEDERAL NO-FLY LIST ON THE TABLE FOR VIOLENT PLANE PASSENGERS: Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said on CNN's State of the Union yesterday that a federal no-fly list for violent plane passengers, quote, "should be on the table." He made the remark after an American Airlines flight attendant was attacked by a passenger last week and had to be hospitalized with several broken bones in her face. Buttigieg said, "It is completely unacceptable to mistreat, abuse or even disrespect flight crews. We will continue to look at all options to make sure that flight crews and passengers are safe." The Federal Aviation Administration has reported a spike in incidents of disruptive and violent behavior by passengers to unprecedented levels this year as people returned to flying from the historic low numbers at the height of the pandemic. In response, the FAA instituted a zero tolerance policy, and so far has proposed more than $1 million in fines. According to CNN, there are hundreds of passengers that airlines have banned from future flights for refusing to wear masks, but airlines aren't sharing information with each other about those passengers. There is currently a federal no-fly list that's only for known and suspected terrorists.


🚦PHILLY TO BAN TRAFFIC STOPS FOR MINOR VIOLATIONS:  Philadelphia is set to stop having police pull over cars for minor traffic violations, which will make it the first major U.S. city to do so. The legislation, meant to permit traffic stops only when required for public safety, was passed last month and is expected to be signed into law by Democratic Mayor Jim Kenney. But while minor violations like tags that have been expired for just a short time or an emissions test sticker that isn't visible will no longer be a reason for a traffic stop, drivers will still get a warning or ticket by mail. City Councilman Isaiah Thomas, who wrote the legislation, said that such traffic stops disproportionately affect Black people. Part of the motivation for the measure was that these kinds of minor stops can escalate to drivers being killed by police. Thomas hopes that getting rid of these stops will make both the public and police feel safer.


💔COUPLES WHO MEET ONLINE MORE LIKELY TO DIVORCE WITHIN THREE YEARS: New research suggests that married couples who meet online are six times more likely to divorce within three years than those who meet their partners though more traditional methods. A report from the Marriage Foundation says that 12 percent of couples who meet over the internet don’t make it to their third anniversary compared to just two percent who meet through family or friends. According to the research, those who meet online are at higher risk of divorce because they could still be “relative strangers” when they wed.

⚾ASTROS DEFEAT BRAVES 9-5 TO STAY ALIVE, CUT ATLANTA'S WORLD SERIES LEAD TO 3-2: The Houston Astros defeated the Atlanta Braves 9-5 in Game 5 of the World Series last night (October 31st) to stay alive and cut the Braves' lead to 3 games to 2. The win in Atlanta also sends the series back to Houston for Game 6 and a possible Game 7. The Astros climbed their way back from quickly being down 4-0 on a grand slam in the first inning by the Braves' Adam Duvall. Carlos Correa doubled and singled twice for the Astros, driving in two runs, and pinch-hitter Marwin Gonzalez got a two-out, two-run single in the fifth inning for a 7-5 lead, putting Houston ahead for good. Game 6 is Tuesday night.

🏈RUSH WINS FIRST NFL START IN FILL-IN FOR COWBOYS' PRESCOTT: Dallas Cowboys' quarterback Cooper Rush led a 20-16 win over the Minnesota Vikings in his first NFL start last night as he filled for the injured Dak Prescott, who was benched in a game-time decision due to a strained calf muscle. Rush, a fifth-year backup, passed for 325 yards and two touchdowns, including a five-yard TD with 51 seconds left.

🏈JETS UPSET BENGALS IN WHITE'S FIRST NFL START, IN FOR INJURED WILSON: The New York Jets upset the Cincinnati Bengals 34-31 yesterday as quarterback Mike White came through in his first NFL start, in for rookie QB Zach Wilson, who's out with a sprained knee. The 26-year-old White, who's been cut five times in his NFL career, passed for 405 yards and three touchdowns. It was the first 400-yard passing performance for the Jets since 2000 and the most by a first-time starter since Cam Newton had 422 yards for the Carolina Panthers in 2011.

🏈SAINTS BEAT TAMPA BAY, BUT WINSTON SUFFERS 'SIGNIFICANT' INJURY: The New Orleans Saints beat Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 36-27 yesterday, but they had to do it after losing quarterback Jameis Winston, who suffered what head coach Sean Payton said he believes is a "significant" injury to his left knee early in the second quarter. Winston was hurt when he was pulled down from behind by Devin White, who was flagged for a horse collar tackle. Trevor Siemian took over for Winston, throwing for 159 yards and a touchdown. The Saints sealed the victory when P.J. Williams intercepted Brady and returned the ball 40 yards for a touchdown with 1:24 left.

🏀HARDEN TIES BIRD FOR SECOND IN CAREER TRIPLE-DOUBLES: Brooklyn's James Harden scored 18 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists in the Nets' 117-91 win over the Detroit Pistons last night. That gave him his 59th career triple-double to tie with NBA great Larry Bird for second on the all-time list.

🏈FALCONS' RIDLEY TO 'STEP AWAY FROM FOOTBALL' FOR MENTAL HEALTH REAONS: Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Calvin Ridley said yesterday that he needs to, quote, "step away from football at this time" to focus on his mental health. He said in a statement on Twitter, "These past few weeks have been very challenging and as much as I'd like to be on the field competing with my teammates, I need to step away from football at this time and focus on my mental wellbeing. This will help me be the best version of myself now and in the future." No details were disclosed about the issue Ridley is facing.
