The publisher of USA Today and 107 other papers said on Monday that it plans to trim its workforce by about 400 people — or 2 percent of its 18,700-person payroll.
“Actions like these are difficult, but I remain steadfastly committed to reinvesting in our employees and the capabilities required to sustain and grow our company so that we may continue to serve our customers with excellence,” Robert Dickey, chief executive of Gannett, said.
The cuts are said to be across the board, including at its McLean, Va., headquarters, and are expected to include some newsroom jobs.
Meanwhile, negotiations for Gannett to buy Tronc, the owner of the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Baltimore Sun and other daily papers, for about $18.75 a share appear to be in the home stretch.
The Gannett board wants to close the deal before its earnings report on Thursday, multiple sources told The NYPost.
