Wichita Radio: Flooding Knocks KFTI Off-Air

Many apartments, homes and businesses in Wichita are cleaning up after torrential rains this weekend caused significant flooding.

The KFTI 1070 AM studios in north Wichita were not immune, according to its news department.

Flooding on the lower level of the building has forced Classic Country 1070 AM to power down. Chief Engineer Bryce LeGrand said the flooding is dangerous for the radio broadcasting equipment.

"The combination of water in the transmitter room and the high humidity inside the tech center make it unsafe to operate," LeGrand said.

Six water removal trucks were seen outside the building that also houses the Country KFDI 101.3 FM, Rock KICT 95.1 FM T-95, Hispanic KYQQ 106.5 Radio Lobo, and Classic Hits KFXJ 104.5 FM The Fox.

Justin Case, operations manager for Scripps Media, Inc. said the other stations are not affected.

"The water is coming up through the foundation," Case said. "Only the location of the Classic Country transmitter in our building forced a shutdown."

The station will remain off-the-air until the flooding is under control. That could be sometime Tuesday or Wednesday.
