5/9 WAKE-UP CALL: Texas Driver Charged With Manslaughter

Texas driver charged with manslaughter after deadly Brownsville crash A Texas man accused of crashing his car into a group of pedestrians near a Brownsville homeless shelter housing migrants, killing eight people, has been charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault, police said on Monday. The driver, identified as 34-year-old George Alvarez, ran a red light, lost control of his sports utility vehicle, and struck 18 people as the car flipped on its side, Brownsville Police Chief Felix Sauceda said. Alvarez attempted to flee but was held down by several bystanders, Sauceda said. Investigators were waiting for toxicology reports on Alvarez to determine if he was impaired at the time of the crash. Police have not ruled out the possibility that the crash was intentional, Sauceda said.

➤TX GUNMAN PLANNED MALL MASSACRE: The Texas mall gunman scoped out the scene of his crime to track when it would be busiest three weeks before he shot dead eight people in a senseless bloodbath, it has been reported. A social media account that appears to belong to Mauricio Garcia, 33, is littered with photos of Nazis, guns and ammunition as well as extremist rants about Jews, women and racial minorities, according to Bellingcat researcher Aric Toler. In the weeks before he committed the senseless mass shooting at Allen Premium Outlets near Dallas, more than two dozen photos of the shopping center and surrounding area were uploaded to an account on the OK.RU platform, including screenshots of Google location information tracking peak visiting times. Both Toler and NBC said the account, on Russian site OK.RU, belonged to Garcia, who was shot and killed at the scene. DailyMail.com verified a picture of Garcia uploaded to an account on a Russian social media that shows him next to a waitress at a Texas Twin Peaks. 

➤MIGRANTS TO STORM SOUTHERN BORDER: The Biden administration and Texas state government are sending reinforcements to the U.S.-Mexico border to prepare for a possible increase in illegal immigration when COVID-19 restrictions known as Title 42 are set to end on Thursday. Hundreds of specialized investigative agents and air marshals from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) are being pulled from day-to-day duties to help with border management, sources said, leading to pushback from some employees who argue they are being reassigned to menial tasks. At the same time, Texas deployed a specially trained National Guard unit on Monday to target "hot spots" where migrants try to enter the United States illegally, Governor Greg Abbott said. The moves are part of broader efforts by President Joe Biden, along with state and local officials, to prepare for the end of the Title 42 order on Thursday. The order, in place since 2020, allows U.S. authorities to quickly expel migrants to Mexico without the chance to seek U.S. asylum.

 

➤RUSSIA CONTINUES ATTACKS: Russia launched a new attack on Ukraine on Tuesday as Russia celebrated the anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945, with Ukraine's air defences destroying 23 of 25 missiles fired, chiefly at the capital Kyiv, officials said. The attack - the fifth in May - came a day after Russia launched its biggest drone swarm yet in a renewed air campaign unleashed 10 days ago after a lull since early March. Military officials said there were no casualties in Tuesday's attack and not much damage. Russia celebrates Victory Day on Tuesday, one of its most important public holidays when thousands of people will line the streets of Moscow's Red Square to watch a military parade, set for 0700 GMT, and listen a speech by President Vladimir Putin.

➤CIVIL TRIAL ATTORNEY 'TRUMP DID IT': Donald Trump should be held accountable for sexually attacking an advice columnist in 1996 because even a former president is not above the law, a lawyer for the columnist told a jury Monday in closing arguments in the lawsuit that accuses Trump of rape. A lawyer for Trump responded by calling the accuser’s account “unbelievable” and “outrageous.”

Once the final arguments were complete, the judge sent the jury home with instructions to return Tuesday to hear about an hour of instructions before beginning deliberations. Jurors will be asked to decide whether Trump committed battery and defamed writer E. Jean Carroll and whether damages should be awarded. In recapping Carroll’s case, attorney Roberta Kaplan showed jurors video clips of Trump from his October deposition and replayed the “Access Hollywood” video from 2005 in which Trump said into a hot mic that celebrities can grab women’s genitals without asking.

➤PROTESTS TURN VIOLENT: Protests in New York City at the killing of a homeless man, Jordan Neely, on the subway turned violent on Monday, with several people arrested, one with blood pouring down his face. A photographer was also detained. Neely, 30, was killed on May 1 when a former Marine, Daniel Penny, 24, held him in a chokehold. Neely, who was schizophrenic and autistic, was yelling to be sent to jail because he was hungry, and was throwing garbage. Protesters are calling for Penny to be prosecuted. Eric Adams, mayor of New York, is urging the city to wait for investigators to complete their inquiries before rushing to judgement.


➤TEEN DIES AFTER BEING TRAPPED UNDER SAND AT CAPE HATTERAS NATIONAL SEASHORE: A 17-year-old from Chesapeake, Virginia died Saturday after being buried in a hole under several feet of sand at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, the seashore said. Family and friends looking for the teen found him trapped under sand, the seashore said, after parts of an adjacent dune apparently collapsed into the hole. The incident is under investigation.

➤EX-GIRLFRIEND SAYS TIGER WOODS USED LAWYER TO BREAK UP WITH HER: A $30 million legal battle between Tiger Woods and his ex-girlfriend has escalated, with Erica Herman accusing the golf superstar of beginning their sexual relationship when she was his employee and threatening to fire her if she didn't sign a nondisclosure agreement she now wants voided. Herman, in court documents filed late Friday, also accused Woods of having his lawyer break up with her at an airport in October after falsely telling her they were going on a weekend trip. The lawyer then evicted her from Woods' $54 million mansion north of Palm Beach.

🏀LAKERS, HEAT TAKE COMMANDING LEAD: In a close, contentious affair, the Los Angeles Lakers - led by LeBron James - were able to take a commanding lead in the Western Conference Semifinals. A game that went back and forth throughout the evening ended in victory for the Lakers over the Golden State Warriors by a 104-101 scoreline. As the game went down to the wire, the Lakers were able to string together some strong stretches of offense to put away a dominant performance from Warriors point guard Steph Curry.

Jimmy Butler had 27 points and 10 assists, Bam Adebayo finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds and the Miami Heat moved a win away from their third trip to the Eastern Conference finals in the last four years by topping the New York Knicks 109-101 on Monday night.

⚾YANKEES GO DEEP 4 TIMES FOR WIN: Aaron Hicks broke out of his season-long slump with a two-run homer and New York went deep four times in a win over Oakland. Gleyber Torres hit a tiebreaking solo drive in the sixth inning against former Yankees lefty JP Sears (0-3). Oswaldo Cabrera and DJ LeMahieu launched two-run shots off Sears as New York (19-17) avoiding falling back to .500 for the second time in a week.

Shane McClanahan worked six innings and became this season´s first seven-game winner, Josh Lowe and Luke Raley homered and Tampa Bay topped Baltimore in a matchup of the teams with the best record in the American League. The Rays extended their AL East lead to 6 1/2 games. McClanahan (7-0) allowed four hits and four walks and struck out seven.

Shohei Ohtani had a pair of RBI doubles, Brandon Drury drove in the go-ahead run with a triple in the eighth inning and Los Angeles rallied past Houston 6-4.

⚾BRAVES TRAVIS D'ARNAUD RETURNING FROM CONCUSSION IL: The Braves activated catcher Travis d'Arnaud from the injured list on Monday, one month after he sustained a concussion in a collision at home plate. D'Arnaud played three games on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Gwinnett, going hitless in eight at-bats with two walks. That was good enough for the Braves to bring him back ahead of a two-game series against the Boston Red Sox. Catcher Chadwick Tromp was optioned to Gwinnett.

🏈COLTS' JIM IRSAY WARNS TEAMS ABOUT ANDREW LUCK CONTACT: Colts owner Jim Irsay wants to make it clear that Andrew Luck is off-limits. After learning the availability of Luck was the subject of an inquiry last year by the Washington Commanders, Irsay took to social media Sunday night to warn teams about any correspondence regarding the long-retired Colts quarterback. "If any NFL team attempted to contact Andrew Luck (or any associate of him) ... to play for their Franchise -- it would be a clear violation of the League's Tampering Policy," Irsay posted on Twitter.

🏀JOKIC FINED, BUT NOT SUSPENDED: Nikola Jokic is free to compete in Game 5 for the Denver Nuggets against the Phoenix Suns, despite pushing Suns owner Mat Ishbia in Game 4 on Sunday. But while he has not been suspended, Jokic has been fined $25,000 according to ESPN. Jokic was whistled for a technical foul in the second quarter on Sunday when the big man tried to snatch the ball back from Ishbia, who was sitting courtside, and hit the new Suns owner with an elbow.
