L-A Radio: iHM Moves Ellen K To Mornings On KOST

iHeartMedia Los Angeles announced today that Ellen K, veteran radio personality and co-host with Ryan Seacrest on KIIS 102.7 FM's morning show, will make the move to anchor mornings on sister station KOST 103.5 FM.

Ellen K
"The Ellen K Morning Show on KOST 103.5" will debut on October 19th at 6:00AM. Concurrently, long time KOST personality Mark Wallengren will move to host afternoon drive.

"Ellen K is a major marquee radio talent, and we saw a real opportunity to bring her to KOST, building a great roster that also includes one of L.A.'s most beloved personalities, Mark Wallengren, now leading our afternoons," said Andrew Jeffries, SVP of Programming for iHeartMedia.

"Ellen's personality and life experience make her extremely relatable to the adult KOST audience, and she will bring a real sense of personal connection for the listeners to the morning show at KOST. At the same time, Mark Wallengren is part of the foundation of this legendary radio brand, so having him at the helm in afternoons makes this a one-two punch for the station."

Ellen K has one of the most recognizable voices in radio. Most recently Ellen co-hosted "On Air with Ryan Seacrest," the market-topping No. 1 Los Angeles morning drive-time show for iHeartMedia's 102.7 KIIS-FM as well as the top rated, nationally-syndicated music and entertainment show "On Air with Ryan Seacrest," heard on 170 stations across America as well as on iHeartRadio.

Ellen regularly appears on The Talk and has been the voice of The Grammys, People's Choice Awards, the iHeartRadio Music Festival and was most recently selected as the voice of the 88th Academy Awards, in addition to narrating "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and "My Big Fat American Gypsy" on TLC. In 2012 Ellen was honored with a star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame for her work in radio, and was awarded the inaugural Airblazer award by the MIW - Mentoring and Inspiring Women in radio.

"For over a decade, I've had the privilege to co-host "On Air with Ryan Seacrest" on KIIS FM," says Ellen. "It's been an amazing ride, and I'm extremely grateful. I am also thrilled to announce that my new adventure will be on the legendary KOST FM hosting my own morning show-"The Ellen K Morning Show on KOST 103.5. "

Mark Wallengren
The listeners, along with the hard working KOST staff, will make hosting this show a dream job. Thank you to iHeartMedia for their continued support that inspires me to do a job that fascinates me every day. I am looking forward to continuing my interaction with Southern California listeners in a positive & informative way with great music, great prizes, fun topics and more. Thank you in advance SoCal - for letting me be a part of your mornings on KOST!!!"

Mark Wallengren, who has been the host of mornings for 30 years, says "I have always said that KOST 103.5 FM has the greatest listeners and my relationship with them is why I've been doing mornings this long. I am so proud to have been a part of Southern California's morning routine for all these years and being a part of our listeners' lives on a daily basis is something precious and special. I am excited to announce that very soon, I will be moving to afternoon drive, where I will be with Southern California parents picking kids up from school and taking them home from work as opposed to the reverse. I'll continue to bring many of the same things our listeners have come to know and love about my show to the afternoons. See you on the way home!!!"

Pandora To Acquire Ticketfly

Online radio service Pandora has just spent the best part of half a billion dollars to acquire independent ticketing agency Ticketfly – a bit of business that will allow the streaming platform to sell tickets direct to its 80m users.

Music Business Worldwide reports half of the buyout sum is being fulfilled by Pandora in cash, with the other half in company stock.

Brian McAndrews
Since being founded in 2008, Ticketfly now provides ticketing and marketing software for approximately 1,200 venues and event promoters across North America.

Pandora says that the buyout will ‘solve the longstanding problem of event discovery by seamlessly connecting Pandora’s nearly 80 million monthly active music fans to events they’ll love’.

Ticketfly and Pandora say they will also ‘harness the power of their combined data to create new tools for music makers to increase their revenue’.

“This is a game-changer for Pandora – and much more importantly – a game-changer for music,” said Brian McAndrews, chief executive officer at Pandora.

In 2014, Ticketfly sold 16 million tickets to more than 90,000 live events, generating more than $500 million in transaction volume and crossing the $1 billion mark in cumulative transaction volume.

Andrew Dreskin
An average of 14 million people visit Ticketfly.com and its network of client sites each month.

“Pandora’s entry into live events is a watershed moment for the music industry and will forever change the landscape for artists, promoters and fans,” said Andrew Dreskin, co-founder and chief executive officer of Ticketfly.

North American concert ticket sales grew 22 percent since last year, fueling a rapidly growing industry now estimated at $6.2 billion.

“Live music is booming, and we can grow the number of shows being staged and tickets being sold,” added McAndrews.

iHM Names Bill Cahill SVP/Programming

Bill Cahill
iHeartMedia has announced the promotion of Bill Cahill to the role of SVP/Programming for iHeartRadio and Premiere Networks.

He succeeds Rich McLaughlin.

In a staff memo, Darren Davis, President of iHeartRadio and iHeartMedia Networks, explained, "Bill will be responsible for helping us create new, exciting digital channels on iHeartRadio -- and also for continually improving the channels we already have. We've been experiencing unprecedented cume and TLH growth on iHeartRadio, and our goals for 2016 are even more lofty! I'm excited we'll have Bill's experience and expertise focused on our platform."

Cahill will report Chris Williams, who is iHeartRadio Chief Product Officer.

He'll also continue serving as iHM's Classic Hits/Oldies Brand Manager, according to Davis, who added, "Kudos to Bill on all his great work. He has decades of successful broadcast programming under his belt, and he's one of the original programmers of the Premium Choice network. I rely heavily on Bill for a bunch of important projects, and we look forward to many more awesome years ahead!"

Alabama TV Reporter Attacked By Politician

Amos Newsome
A Dothan, AL Commissioner was arrested Tuesday afternoon and charged with third-degree assault following an incident which resulted in Newsome striking a television reporter twice with an open hand.

Amos Newsome, 82, was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon. He was released from jail Tuesday night on a signature bond.

The Dothan Eagle reports Newsome struck WTVY reporter Ken Curtis in the face following Tuesday’s Dothan City Commission meeting as Newsome was leaving to get in his van.

Ken Curtis
Video shot by another WTVY reporter showed Curtis approaching Newsome to ask him about voter fraud allegations connected to his 2013 election. When Curtis asked Newsome if he planned to resign, Newsome struck him with an open hand, causing Curtis to bleed on his right cheek.

Third degree assault is a Class A misdemeanor.

WTVY Vice President and General Manager Spencer Bienvenu released the following statement Tuesday afternoon:
“WTVY is extremely disappointed and horrified by the actions of Dothan City Commissioner Amos Newsome for his unwarranted physical attack on one of our employees. We understand that holding political office can be stressful, but that never warrants unwanted physical contact, let alone an open, public assault. Our employee was attacked in the course of doing their job, which they are entitled to do without the fear of physical violence.
Freedom of the press is a guaranteed right, one that should allow us to do our jobs in a safe, non-threatening environment. WTVY intends to press charges against Commissioner Newsome, to ensure that no one else will be attacked in the course of doing their job.
We’re grateful for the relationship that we continue to have with the Dothan City Commission and our elected officials.”

Jay Leno Does The Tonight Show

Jay Leno returned to his “Tonight Show” stomping grounds, making an unannounced cameo during Jimmy Fallon’s opening monologue Tuesday night.

Variety reports Leno’s appearance comes as a surprise, though the timing is no mistake: his upcoming show “Jay Leno’s Garage” premieres tomorrow on NBC’s sister network, CNBC, so his spot makes for a perfect in-house promotion.

During the show, Fallon opens per usual, and then Leno crashes the monologue, surprising the audience and telling a few jokes.

“Ah! Shoot, I think I pulled a hammy on that last joke,” Fallon says. “I don’t think I can continue. But of course, here at the ‘Tonight Show,’ the monologue has to go on. So I think I’m gonna have to sub out. Can someone can tag in for me?” Fallon says as Leno takes the stage.

The Tuesday night monologue marked Leno’s second time standing center stage on “The Tonight Show” since his February 2014 departure when he passed the baton down to Fallon.

ABC Family to Rebrand As 'Freeform'

ABC Family will be renamed and rebranded as Freeform in January 2016, network president Tom Ascheim announced Tuesday, reports Variety.

The relaunch, which will coincide with the cabler’s popular “25 Days of Christmas” and winter premieres, marks a continued effort to evolve the young-skewing network past traditional family viewing and toward its target audience of “Becomers,” a network-coined term defined as those in the life stage spanning ages 14 to 34.

Matt Drudge Slams Mainstream Media

Conservative media entrepreneur Matt Drudge gave a very rare public interview on Tuesday in which he lashed out at Hillary Clinton, mainstream media and the uniformity of American culture in the digital age.

Matt Drudge
In a rambling, wide-ranging discussion with Radio host Alex Jones, a conspiracy theorist, Drudge admonished "the sickness of the American people," who he said were forfeiting individual thought and becoming slaves to Internet companies.

Blind to the realities of the current political situation, Drudge said voters were now likely to install "Hillary's brain in the Oval Office in a jar."

CNN reports the founder of the Drudge Report also called Clinton "old and sick," and blamed the media for covering up stories about extramarital affairs.

"Why aren't we seeing Hillary's lovers?" Drudge asked Jones. "Why aren't we seeing Hillary's lovers?"

The nearly 45-minute rant oscillated wildly between familiar critiques of the establishment and paranoid conspiracy theories with little basis in reality.

Drudge has wielded immense influence over American political media for two decades. In 1995, he launched The Drudge Report, a simple webpage that aggregates the day's news under sensational headlines, often fueling conservatives' worst fears about the left, the media and, at times, the decline of American civilization.

But Drudge's influence goes beyond that: Politico, which recently named Drudge one of the top 50 most influential figures in American politics, notes that Drudge "helps to write the narrative" of each presidential campaign -- which is why his critiques and conspiracy theories about Hillary Clinton are so notable.

Howard Stern Rants About Roger Waters

Howard Stern
Radio personality Howard Stern delivered a seven-minute rant Tuesday against former Pink Floyd bassist Roger Waters for advocating a boycott of the Jewish state.

He’s got to shut up, Roger Waters,” Stern said on his popular radio show.

“What is with Roger Waters and the Jews? … Where do you want the Jews to go, Roger? You want them to just go back to the concentration camp? What is it you want, f**khead?” he asked.

The Times of Israel reports Stern then mocked Waters for focusing on Israel. “It seems like you’re a little too consumed with it,” he suggested.

Waters, a founding member of the rock band Pink Floyd and an activist in the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel, published an open letter criticizing rocker Jon Bon Jovi for performing in Tel Aviv on Oct. 3.

A frequent critic of Israel, Waters published the letter in Salon on Friday, responding to Bon Jovi telling Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahronoth last week that he is “excited to come” to Israel despite Waters’s efforts to deter musicians from performing there.

Sun Broadcast To Rep The Weather Channel

The Weather Channel and Sun Broadcast Group have announced a network radio partnership in a move that the companys says "will change how listeners consume and interact with The Weather Channel team's national radio products." The multi-year deal will see Sun representing The Weather Channel national ad inventory but will also include using Sun's "Shazam for Radio" product to create interactive, broadcast radio weather forecasts.

The new hyper-local, Shazamable weather reports will allow listeners to use their Shazam app to launch an interactive forecast on their mobile phone, tablet or desktop. In addition to an automatic replay feature of the forecast and real-time sharing abilities across multiple platforms, the new services will also include localized extended forecasts, live radar maps, pollen reports and other detailed weather information to compliment The Weather Channel affiliates' current offerings.

"Radio is a very powerful medium for The Weather Channel due to its local reach, and local relevance is key to getting the most precise weather coverage and information to listeners," said The Weather Channel Radio Network General Manager Scott Lawrimore. "Sometimes it's hard to boil our expertise down to a 20-second weather hit. With Sun Broadcast Group's help, we hope to give the listener the added experience of being able to 'Shazam' our weather report and instantly learn more about the forecast on their smart phone. "

"As Sun continues our rapid growth we are constantly on the lookout for best-in-brand providers that understand, as we do, the changing radio landscape," added Sun Broadcast Group CEO Jason Bailey. "Not only is it an honor and privilege to represent The Weather Channel brand's extensive national radio network to our partners, clients and advertisers, but the commitment from both our companies to deliver the nation's first ever, fully interactive, broadcast radio weather reports is incredibly exciting."

Report: Media General Ends Meredith Deal

Media General’s $2.4 billion agreement to acquire Meredith Corp. is dead, two sources close to the deal said.

One day after The NY Post reported exclusively that a second major Media General shareholder opposed the deal, it has become clear that there is not enough shareholder support to approve it, two sources close to the situation said Tuesday.

The shareholder revolt comes days after the company announced on Sept. 28 that rival Nexstar Broadcasting had made an unsolicited $14.50-per-share stock and cash proposal to buy Media General.

On Tuesday, nypost.com broke the news that 7-percent-shareholder Oppenheimer opposed the Meredith deal. Earlier, activist Starboard Capital, a 4.5-percent shareholder, went public saying that it was against the acquisition.

Meredith shares, which spiked to $50.47 the day Media General announced its $51.53-a-share deal, have been generally selling off since.

On Tuesday, Meredith shares closed up 30 cents, to $43.70 — slightly below the point before the Media General deal was announced.

Meanwhile, shares of Media General stock closed down 10 cents, to $13.92.

For Meredith, this could be the second time it has been left at the altar.

Media General declined comment.

ESPN Drops DraftKings Content

ESPN on Tuesday removed sponsored content for DraftKings from its programs on the heels of allegations of insider trading within the fantasy sports company.

"It is a standard procedure for us to pull these kind of sponsorships and integrations when we are covering significant news, to avoid any suggestion of influence on our coverage," ESPN said in a statement.

The situation is being monitored "day-to-day," an ESPN spokeswoman told The Hollywood Reporter.

DraftKings as well as its competitor FanDuel are being scrutinized after an employee of DraftKings won $350,000 on FanDuel thanks largely to information that was not available to the public, according to numerous reports.

The fantasy sports sites allow participants to build teams with players they believe will score the most points and then enter assorted contests at different price ranges. Whoever has the most points after all the week's games, wins the largest amount of the pot.

R.I.P.: PA. Radio Broadcaster Harry Clark

Harry Clark
Harry L. Clark Jr., a broadcast pioneer, educator, and Hatboro, PA councilman, died Sept. 29, of aplastic anemia in Abington Hospice, Warminster.

He was 77-years-of-age according to philly.com.

As a college student, he hosted his own radio program over WKOK 1070 AM in Sunbury, Pa.; he worked with announcer Merrill Reese at WBCB in Levittown, as a disc jockey and newsman; and was a writer for KYW Newsradio.

R.I.P.: Pop, Country Singer Billy Joe Royal

Singer Billy Joe Royal, best known for his pop hit “Down in the Boondocks” and a string of country singles in the 1980s, died unexpectedly in his home in North Carolina on Tuesday morning, according to his publicist, Brent Taylor.

He was 73 years old, according to The Tennessean.

Mr. Royal was born April 3, 1942 in Valdosta, Georgia, and began singing at an early age. As a young man he performed on the radio program "Georgia Jubilee," which is where he met artists like Jerry Reed and Joe South. It was South who penned Mr. Royal's 1965 breakout single, "Down in the Boondocks," which peaked at No. 9. Mr. Royal would also find success with his follow-up single: another South-penned song, called "I Knew You When."

During the mid-1980s, Mr. Royal's career was revitalized when he signed with Atlantic Records and began releasing country songs.  He was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 1988.

October 7 Radio History

In 1939…The drama series "Kate Hopkins, Angel of Mercy," starring Helen Lewis, Peggy Allenby, Constance Collier, and Clayton "Bud" Collyer began a 2½-year run on CBS Radio.

In 1940…"Portia Faces Life," starring Lucille Wall, debuted on the CBS Radio Network after starting in syndication seven months earlier. The soap opera bounced back and forth between CBS and NBC until 1953.

In 1952...The Philadelphia dance show Bandstand , hosted by Bob Horn and, later, by Dick Clark as American Bandstand , debuts on WFIL-TV.

In 1966...WOR 98.7 FM New York, which has been broadcasting top-40 music without deejays since late July, begins broadcasting with personalities. The DJs are Murray (the K) Kaufman, Scott Muni, Johnny Michaels and Bill (Rosko) Mercer. Robert S. Smith, vice president of the WOR, said the station was negotiating with the union, which wanted the new FM deejays to be paid on the same scale as WOR-AM announcers. The station wanted a lower scale for the FM people, because the operation is beginning from scratch. The minimum weekly salary for performers on WOR-FM will be $175 per week, a little less than half the scale applying to WOR-AM. Murray The K was formerly the teen DJ for WINS, New York before it went all-news last year. Scott Muni was with WABC radio until he was fired in January of ‘65.

In 1970...Intel introduces computer memory chip.

In 1988....WNBC 660 AM's final transmission took place and WFAN moved from 1050 AM to 660 AM. Concurrently, WUKQ began on 1050 AM.

In November 1987, General Electric, which now owned NBC through its purchase of RCA two years earlier, announced that it would sell off the NBC Radio division. In February of that year GE made a multi-station deal with Emmis Communications and, in New York, the WNBC license for 660 was included in the sale. Emmis announced it would move WFAN to the 660 frequency. At the time, WFAN was located at 1050 AM, and had a somewhat marginal signal in portions of the New York area. As the deal only included the license for WNBC and not the station's intellectual property, GE would proceed to shut down the station for good.

On October 7, 1988 at 5:30 pm, the WFAN call letters, studios, programming and staff moved to WNBC's old frequency at 660 AM, which has a much better signal.

Earlier in the day, the station aired a 90-minute retrospective titled "WNBC-The First 66 Years," hosted by Dale Parsons. The program was written and produced by Parsons and his wife, Ginny, who spent nearly six months researching the station's history.

The last voice heard on WNBC was that of Alan Colmes, who said "I'm Alan Colmes. Thank you, God bless you, and for the last time, this is 66 WNBC New York. Let's do the countdown." and counted down the seconds to WNBC's demise with the legendary NBC chimes (the notes G-E-C) playing in the background.

Earlier in the day, regular music programming ended at 6 am; Jay Sorenson played "Imagine" by John Lennon followed by the NBC chimes and a 5-second pause.  Although the FCC regards the 660 frequency as the same license dating back to WEAF, and merely changed its calls from WNBC to WFAN on that day, WFAN does not claim WNBC's history. It did, however, sign up Imus to take Greg Gumbel's place in the morning. Imus would remain on the morning drive-time slot for 19 years, until his firing in 2007 for comments about the Rutgers University women's basketball team. He moved to WABC near the end of that year.

In the complicated switch that saw WFAN move to the 660 frequency, the 1050 frequency that was formerly the home of WFAN became that of Spanish-language WUKQ, owned by Spanish Broadcasting System. However, SBS already owned an AM station in the market, Newark-based WSKQ at 620 kHz, and at the time, FCC rules stipulated that companies could own only one AM station per market. As a result, SBS received a temporary waiver to run 1050 while exploring the sale of either AM frequency. SBS chose to keep 620 (it is now WSNR), and 1050 was traded to Forward Communications, which owned WEVD, then at 97.9 FM. After that deal was approved, WEVD's call letters and programming moved to 1050 AM, and SBS took over 97.9 as WSKQ-FM. The October NBC-Emmis switch also saw Emmis's WQHT (then at 103.5 MHz) move to 97.1 MHz, which had been the home of NBC's WYNY. Emmis sold the 103.5 frequency to Westwood One, who also acquired the WYNY call letters and its country music format.

In all this, WFAN retired two of the oldest radio call letters from the dawn of commercial radio: WHN and WNBC.

Tampa Radio: Bubba Clem Admits To Ratings Tampering

Bubba Clem
Tampa Radio personality Bubba the Love Sponge Clem admitted to ratings tampering charges at a news conference Tuesday, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

In a short statement to reporters, Clem admitted that he was contacted by a Nielsen ratings panelist and that he tried to influence that person's listening habits.

"I can't tell you how humbled and embarrassed I am," Clem said after apologizing to listeners, advertisers and staff.

Clem, who has been off the air at WBRN 98.7 FM since Sept. 26, returned to the air Tuesday morning.

Clem refused to take questions from reporters after his statement.

"It's not acceptable and I take full responsibility," he said before departing the news conference.

Broadcast TV News Race Getting More Intense

The ABC/NBC news-ratings war between David Muir and Lester Holt is about to get even more intense.

ABC’s evening broadcast, “World News Tonight with David Muir,” took its first-ever win for a full year in the all-important C3 Nielsen ad ratings, ABC revealed on Monday.

The NY Post reports Muir beat “NBC Nightly News” — anchored by both Brian Williams and Lester Holt over the past 12 months — by a hair in the key category of C3 adults 25 to 54 years old.

C3 is a measure of the commercials watched both live and three days DVR playback and is the metric under which much of primetime advertising is bought and sold.

Muir notched 1.972 million viewers in the category, while NBC came in at 1.967 million for the year through Sept. 20.

ABC network is about to start an ad campaign touting its win. ABC insiders claim that the show’s ad revenue is up 11 percent year on year.

The 41-year-old Muir is in an all-out dog-fight with Holt, who draws the most total viewers each evening.

Muir started out strong but drifted off somewhat, news analyst Andrew Tyndall said. And his broadcast has reinvented the newscast by focusing on strong video visuals versus coverage of abstract foreign policy, he added.

“Considering what’s happening in prime time, the numbers in total viewers for news are enormous,” Tyndall said.

Lester Holt, 56, however, has held his own since NBC named him permanent anchor after predecessor Brian Williams was caught lying about his war coverage. Holt has been No. 1 in the C3 ratings since June 22, NBC News said.
