American singer-songwriter Chip Taylor, best known for writing “Angel of the Morning” and “Wild Thing,” has died at age 86.
His death was confirmed Tuesday by Billy Vera, who described Taylor as a close friend and songwriting mentor, saying he passed away Monday in hospice care.
Taylor was a major figure in popular music, earning recognition for crafting enduring hits recorded by multiple artists across decades. His contributions were later honored with induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
In recent years, Taylor continued to create music despite health challenges. He underwent treatment for throat cancer in 2023 and drew from that experience for his 2024 album, Behind the Sky.
Born James Wesley Voight, Taylor came from a prominent entertainment family. He was the younger brother of Jon Voight and the uncle of Angelina Jolie.
Taylor’s legacy spans decades of songwriting that influenced rock and pop music, with his work continuing to resonate through countless recordings and performances.
