The GRAMMYS: Taylor Swift Makes History


 At Sunday’s  2024 Grammy Awards, Taylor Swift made history with her fourth album of the year win, taking the prize for Midnights, as well as the pop vocal album award. Miley Cyrus was also a double winner, taking home her first two Grammys ever, for record of the year and best pop solo performance.

Legendary songstress Celine Dion made a surprise appearance to close out the night and present the Album of the Year Grammy. Despite her recent diagnosis with stiff person syndrome, the “Taking Chances” singer gracefully thanked the audience and emphasized how happy she was to be on the Grammys stage 27 years after she won the category. She then got to open the envelope and proclaim Taylor Swift’s “Midnights” the album of the year, which makes Swift the only artist to win four Grammys in that category. She previously won for “Fearless,” “1989” and “folklore.”

The night’s leading nominee, SZA, who had nine nods coming in to Sunday, left with three new Grammys, including best R&B song for “Snooze,” which she picked up on the main broadcast. boygenius also snagged a trio of awards during the Grammy Premiere Ceremony, including best alternative music album for the record. The night’s two other three-time winners: best new artist champ Victoria Monét and Killer Mike, who swept his rap nominations.

 Early in the telecast, a performance of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” brought the entire audience to their feet and set social media ablaze with praise for Chapman. The performance was a duet between Luke Combs, who has found success covering the song on tour, and the 59-year-old Chapman who has been away from the spotlight for decades. It was a stunning rendition, and Chapman’s song shot to the top of the iTunes charts afterwards.

Best Country Album presented to Lainey Wilson by Kacey Musgraves. Wilson told the crowd she comes from a farming community of 200 people in Northeast Louisiana.

Billie Eilish and Finneas won the coveted Song of the Year prize for “What Was I Made For?” from the “Barbie” soundtrack, which honors the best in songwriting. Miley Cyrus took Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for “Flowers,” her first two Grammys ever.
