9/25 WAKE-UP CALL: Shutdown of Federal Government Looming

With less than a week before a potential government shutdown and no clear resolution in sight, lawmakers are split on whether the country should brace for the wide-ranging impacts of a shutdown. In the House, where most of the fight over government spending has been taking place, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., has struggled to unite House Republicans behind a deal as conservative hardliners block almost all of McCarthy’s attempts at avoiding a shutdown. As a result, some GOP lawmakers have resigned themselves to the government closing its doors, given how little time is remaining for lawmakers to meet their deadline and the ongoing turmoil that has engulfed the House.

➤POLL..U-S DOING TOO MUCH IN UKRAINE: Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to the U.S. did little to rally Americans behind his embattled nation, as a steep partisan divide weakens support for its war effort, a new poll found. The ABC News/Washington Post survey released Sunday revealed Americans' desire to fund Ukraine's war with Russia continues to flag, with 41% of respondents saying the U.S. is doing too much, compared to 33% in February. Exactly half said the U.S. is doing the right amount or not enough, down from 60% in February. The numbers reflect partisan positions as Republican members of Congress, especially in the House, have increasingly voiced opposition to President Joe Biden's funding requests for military and humanitarian aid for Ukraine, which has already amounted to more than $100 billion. The current request under congressional consideration is for $24 billion.

➤DEAL REPORTED WITH GUILD WRITERS: Hollywood writers, studios and streamers said Sunday that they have reached a tentative agreement that would end a monthslong strike. The new three-year deal includes several hard-fought victories for the writers including increased royalties, mandatory staffing for television “writing rooms” and protections regarding the use of artificial intelligence, people familiar with the pact said.

Neither side would address the terms of the accord. The Writers Guild of America said it is still finalizing the memorandum of agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, a coalition representing movie and TV studios, networks and streamers. The negotiating committee will then vote on whether to recommend it and send the contract forward for approval. Until that happens, writers have been instructed not to return to work by the WGA. However, that both sides are acknowledging a deal after months of contentious negotiations is seen as the beginning of the end of the strike.

The deal comes after five consecutive days of talks that involved Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, Disney CEO Bob Iger, Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos and NBCUniversal Studios Group Chairman Donna Langley.

➤AUTOMAKERS REPORT SOME PROGRSSS WITH UAW: Ford Motor said on Sunday that despite progress in some areas, it still has "significant gaps to close" on key economic issues before it can reach a new labor agreement with the United Auto Workers union. The "issues are interconnected and must work within an overall agreement that supports our mutual success," it said in a late evening statement after talks over the weekend. The UAW, which on Friday cited "real progress" in talks with the No. 2 U.S. automaker, did not immediately comment.

➤TRAIN HITS FAMILY SUV: Six people are dead, including three children, after a train barreled into an SUV at a Florida railroad crossing Saturday evening in what authorities are describing as a "violent" tragedy. The seven people in the SUV were on their way to a quinceañera, a party celebrating a girl's 15th birthday, when they encountered a railroad crossing marked by a stop sign and a railroad crossing sign, but no crossing arms or warning bell in Plant City, Florida, according to Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister. "The word devastating doesn't even begin to describe the tragedy that unfolded here," Chronister said in a statement. The victims were a man, two women and three children, and another man was injured in critical condition Sunday, officials said. They were members of a family and two friends.

➤NEWSOM VETOES BILL ON PARENTAL SUPPORT OF CHILD'S GENDER INDENTITY IN CUSTODY CASES: Gov. Gavin Newsom of California vetoed a bill on Friday that would instruct judges presiding over custody battles in the state to take into consideration a parent’s support for a child’s gender identity when making custody and visitation decisions. In a letter accompanying his veto on Friday, Mr. Newsom, a Democrat, said that while he he shares “a deep commitment” to advancing transgender rights, he urged caution about making legal standards “in prescriptive terms that single out one characteristic.”

A COAL MINE FIRE IN SOUTHERN CHINA'S GUIZHOU PROVINCE KILLS 16 PEOPLE: A coal mine fire in southern China killed 16 people on Sunday, according to local authorities. The blaze broke out at the Shanjiaoshu coal mine in Panguan, a town in Guizhou province. An initial investigation suggested the people who died were trapped after a conveyor belt caught fire, the Panzhou city government said in a statement posted on social media.

➤DEADLY TRUCK EXPLOSION HITS CHECKPOINT IN CENTRAL SOMALI TOWN: An explosives-laden vehicle detonated at a security checkpoint in the central Somalia city of Beledweyne on Saturday, killing at least 18 people and wounding 40 others, authorities have said. Abdirahman Dahir Gure, the interior minister of Hirshabelle state, announced the toll to journalists. “Twenty of the wounded have been admitted to Beledweyne hospitals, while another 20 are in critical condition, prompting a request for their airlift to Mogadishu for advanced medical treatment,” he said.

🍁CANADA HONORS SS TROOPER: The speaker of Canada's House of Commons on Sunday apologized for praising an individual at a parliamentary meeting who served in a Nazi unit during World War Two. Two days earlier, Speaker Anthony Rota had recognized 98-year old Yaroslav Hunka as a "Ukrainian hero" before the Canadian Parliament. Hunka served in World War II as a member of the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS, according to the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish human rights group that demanded an apology.

🏈NFL CARDINALS  28 COWBOYS 16: Joshua Dobbs threw for 189 yards and a pivotal fourth-quarter touchdown Sunday as the Arizona Cardinals cracked the code on the previously impenetrable Dallas Cowboys' defense in a 28-16 upset win in Glendale, Ariz. Dobbs' 2-yard scoring strike to Marquise Brown with 7:22 left in the game finished off a four-play, 76-yard touchdown drive that quashed Dallas' game-long comeback try. Dobbs completed 17 of 21 passes while adding 55 yards on the ground.

🏈NFL DOLPHINS 70 BRONCOS 20:  De'Von Achane and Raheem Mostert had career days with four touchdowns apiece and Tua Tagovailoa completed his first 17 pass attempts as the Miami Dolphins crushed the Denver Broncos 70-20 on Sunday in Miami Gardens, Fla. Miami (3-0) put together its highest-scoring performance in franchise history while also coming within two points of matching the NFL record. Washington scored 72 points in a 1966 game.Achane rushed for two touchdowns and caught two more as Miami racked up 726 yards of total offense. Achane rushed for 203 yards on 18 carries.
