NYC Radio: John Sterling Plans To Be In Yankees Radio Booth

Aaron Judge could end up leaving the Yankees after this season, but another Yankees icon says he’s not going anywhere.

John Sterling, the 84-year-old Yankees radio voice, was asked on Sunday if he expects to come back for his 34th season behind the mic in 2023, reports Newsday.

“Of course,” he said. “I don’t know how many games I’ll do. Maybe I’ll do all of them. Every broadcaster takes games off. It’s not a big thing. Vin Scully started it. But I plan to continue working and I have, right now, no desire to stop. I’m going to work.”

Sterling worked a reduced schedule this season, taking certain road trips off, before returning to call all of the games during the final stages of the Aaron Judge home run chase and the postseason.

There has been speculation that WFAN 660 AM / 101.9 FM might seek to replace Sterling next season as the Yankees’ lead radio voice. The New York Post reported over the summer that Islanders television play-by-play announcer Brendan Burke “has emerged as the leading candidate to succeed” Sterling, with Sterling still calling an undetermined number of games.

Burke was one of the announcers who filled in for Sterling this season.
