➦In 1932...KUT AM in Austin Texas became KNOW 1490 AM.

On December 7, 1926, the station's first license was originally granted, with the sequentially issued call sign of KGDR. It was owned by a company named "Radio Engineers" and broadcast in San Antonio, Texas. In December 1929, the station was renamed KUT and moved to Austin. That was followed by a call letter change to KNOW on January 26, 1932.

KNOW was owned by the KUT Broadcasting Company. It broadcast at only 100 watts, on 1000 kilocycles. The original KUT moved to Houston and later became KTRH. Today, the KUT call letters are found on the University of Texas' public radio station at 90.5, an affiliate of National Public Radio.

In the 1940s, KNOW moved to its current dial position at 1490 kHz, with the power at 250 watts. It served as Austin's ABC Radio Network affiliate, carrying ABC's schedule of dramas, comedies, news and sports during the "Golden Age of Radio."

In 1949, KNOW was acquired by the Pioneer Broadcasting Company. In the 1950s, it boosted its daytime power to 1,000 watts and remained at 250 watts at night. In the 1960s, it switched to a Top 40 sound. Air Staff in the 70's included P.D. Dave Jarrott, Randall McKee, Jason Wayne. Bill Mayne, Gil Garcia, Jim Gossett, David Gayle, Bill Moss. It call letters where change during the time Hicks Communication owned it from KNOW to KMOW since a mistake was made on giving up the old call letters but were now taken. As contemporary music listening shifted to the FM band in the 1980s, KNOW decided to serve Austin's growing African American community. It flipped to an urban contemporary format. That was coupled with Hicks Communications acquiring the station in 1981.

In 1989, KNOW was sold again, this time to Degree Communications, which switched the format to Oldies. In 1996, the station changed hands again, this time being acquired by San Antonio-based Clear Channel Communications, now iHeartMedia. The call letters were switched to KFON and the format became talk radio {with FON standing for "phone"). It later shifted to sports talk.

In 2005, the station was acquired by Border Media Partners, which owned other stations in Texas, several serving the Latino community. KFON switched to a Classic Regional Mexican music format. There were further call letter changes to KLGO and KTAE, before the current owner Township Media switched the call sign to KTSN, standing for The Sun Network.

The call letters live-on as KNOW-FM and are assigned to Minnesota Public Radio at 91.1 FM.

➦In 1947... “The Greatest Story Ever Told” began a 10-year run on ABC radio. It was the first radio program to dare to simulate the voice of Jesus Christ.

➦In 1969... The Beatles recorded “The Long And Winding Road.” And Ringo Starr wrote “Octopus’s Garden."

When issued as the group's final single in May 1970, a month after the Beatles' break-up, it became the group's 20th and last number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the U-S.

R.I.P.: Larry Thompson of KS95 Staci and Moon Fame

Larry 'Moon' Thompson (1959-2024)

Larry 'Moon' Thompson, of KS95 'Staci and Moon' fame, dies after long MS battle. He was 65, according to Bring Me The News website.

The radio station shared the news on social media Thursday, calling for those to share their tributes and memories using the hashtag #RememberingMoon.

He previously co-hosted afternoons with Staci Matthews on the "Moon and Staci Show" from 2002 to 2019. That's when Moon announced he would be stepping away from the radio booth due to increased complications from MS, a disease he was diagnosed with in 2005.

"Sometimes in life you don't get to choose what goes on and my health is now making my decisions for me," Moon said when he shocked listeners with his announcement on Aug. 3, 2019.

"For the last 14 years this thing has taken things away from me that I love. Like dancing with my wife, and playing with my kids and stuff. It's made a mess of things. But I just kept coming back, and I got to play radio star. And I'm so damn glad I did."

His final radio show was held in October 2019.

Comcast Tops Revenue And Profit Estimates

Comcast's quarterly revenue topped Wall Street estimates on Thursday, as growth in its streaming and theme parks businesses, including a widely watched NFL playoff game, more than offset further losses of broadband subscribers, Reuters reports.

Revenue rose 2.3% to $31.25 billion in the fourth quarter, beating analysts' estimates of $30.51 billion, according to LSEG data.

Shares of the media giant rose more than 4% in trading before the bell.

Comcast lost 34,000 broadband customers in the quarter, less than the loss of 61,000 customers that had been forecast, according to FactSet but exceeding the 18,000 broadband customers it lost in the previous quarter.

Jason Armstrong
During the company's October call with investors, finance chief Jason Armstrong had said it expected "somewhat higher" broadband subscriber losses in the fourth quarter.

The company has faced pressure from wireless carriers such as Verizon and T-Mobile, which offer broadband services that target lower-income customers.

Revenue at the company's Peacock streaming service rose 56.5% from a year earlier, surpassing $1 billion in quarterly revenue for the first time to $1.03 billion. Paid subscribers increased by 3 million in the fourth quarter, to 31 million.

The company has been investing in live programming in an effort to draw more viewers to Peacock. This month, Peacock was the first streaming service to exclusively air an NFL playoff game. The Kansas City Chiefs and the Miami Dolphins game averaged 23 million viewers and became the most-streamed event in U.S. history.

Overall media revenue rose 3.1% to nearly $7 billion, but adjusted EBITDA fell 50% to $108 million due to increased sports programming costs and higher programming costs at Peacock. The increase in sports costs reflected higher media rights for NFL programming, the Premier League and the Big 10.

Domestic advertising revenue decreased 6.9% year over year to $2.64 billion, although sales would have increased 2.7% in the quarter with the exclusion of last year’s World Cup advertising.

Theatrical revenue rose 59% in the quarter based largely on the performance of four films: “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” “Trolls Band Together,” “The Exorcist: Believer” and “Migration.” Universal ranked first in global box office in 2023 for the first time since 2015 and produced three of the top five movies: “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “Oppenheimer” and “Fast X.”

Fox Can Challenge Smartmatic's $2.7B Defamation Claim

Fox Corp. can proceed with its claims that Smartmatic Corp.’s $2.7 billion defamation lawsuit wildly exaggerates the financial harm it suffered from broadcasts falsely accusing it of rigging the 2020 US election, a New York judge ruled.

Rejecting the voting machine firm’s request to toss out Fox’s counterclaims, Justice David B. Cohen on Tuesday ruled that Fox can argue Smartmatic is trying to chill its free speech rights with the giant lawsuit.

Bloomberg reports Cohen is expected to rule soon on Fox’s motion to dismiss Smartmatic’s defamation suit outright. For now, both the suit — which accuses Fox of running a “disinformation campaign” to advance Donald Trump’s vote-rigging theory — and Fox’s counterclaims will proceed in tandem.

The decision comes less than a year after Fox agreed to pay $787.5 million to settle a $1.6 billion defamation suit filed by another voting machine firm, Dominion Voting Systems Inc., which made similar allegations. The former president continues to falsely claim the 2020 election was stolen as he campaigns to return to the White House.

In Tuesday’s ruling, Cohen rejected Smartmatic’s argument that Fox’s settlement with Dominion, on top of significant rulings against Fox in that case, was sufficient to justify tossing out Fox’s counterclaims. Instead, the judge found that Fox’s specific argument about the damages being exaggerated still needs to play out in court.

It’s a significant setback for Smartmatic, which claims its reputation was severely harmed when Fox News hosts and guests repeatedly amplified the election conspiracy theory even after it had been widely debunked. Fox guests including Rudy Giuliani falsely claimed Smartmatic conspired with Dominion and foreign hackers to flip millions of votes away from Trump.

CBS Scores 50M Viewers For NFL Divisional Playoff Game

After a record-setting regular season, the NFL ON CBS continues to deliver record viewership with massive numbers in the postseason.

CBS Sports’ presentation of Chiefs-Bills is the most-watched NFL Divisional Playoff Game ever and the first to surpass 50 million viewers, averaging 50.393 million viewers and up +10% vs. last year’s comparable window (Cowboys-49ers, 45.659 million viewers). The previous record was 48.522 million viewers for Cowboys-Packers on Jan. 15, 2017.

Kansas City’s 27-24 victory was the most-watched program on any network since Super Bowl LVII (Feb. 12, 2023).

Sunday’s game peaked with more than 56 million viewers (56.250).

Paramount+ recorded its most-streamed live event ever.

The NFL ON CBS’ record-setting Divisional Playoff Game follows CBS Sports’ most-watched regular season since the NFL returned to CBS in 1998 and the most-streamed NFL season ever on Paramount+.

Jon Stewart Returning to Late Night

Jon Stewart will take the reins of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” the show he hosted to huge success from 1999 to 2015, for one night a week through the 2024 presidential election, the network said in a surprise announcement on Wednesday. Stewart’s first show will be on Feb. 12, The NY Times reports.

“The Daily Show” has been without a permanent host since Trevor Noah stepped down in late 2022. Stewart will also be a producer on all episodes of “The Daily Show.” Other episodes of the show will be hosted by a rotating lineup of the show’s news team.

Stewart’s relentless focus on politics over his 16-year “Daily Show” run, unusual for late night at the time, transformed him from a promising comedian into one of the nation’s foremost political and media critics. Mr. Stewart had his detractors, and the viewership of “The Daily Show” lagged others at the time but his influence was outsize — and long lasting.

Edison Reveals Peak Listening Times For Audio Platforms

The word “daypart” doesn’t even make Merriam-Webster's dictionary. But those in the broadcast industry or advertising world know it’s how a listening day has traditionally been divided. Dayparts are the blocks of time within the day to run advertising or programming to reach certain audiences.

Edison's Share of Ear® dataset collects listening data continuously through the day, allowing subscribers to look at how listening habits differ by daypart.

The graphic below shows which daypart has the highest average listening time for each audio platform measured in Share of Ear (not which audio platform rules that daypart). It might not be immediately clear that these standard dayparts do not all have the same number of hours: some have four hours and some have five. The team at Edison has taken this into consideration, so the calculations below reflect average listening minutes per hour in each daypart.

Let’s start with AM/FM Radio. The daypart when radio usage peaks is, no surprise, mornings; also known as “morning drive time” (6am-10am). Radio has a historical focus on strong morning shows and many radio listeners have lifelong habituation to listening in the morning whether at home starting the day or driving to work or school.

What might be a bigger surprise is the one type of audio that sees its strongest daypart in the evening (7pm-Midnight) – listening to music on YouTube. During a time of day when we have historically seen audio consumption drop, as television viewing takes over, this form of music-video entertainment is used more in the evenings than any other time of day, showing what a unique form of consumption YouTube for music makes. According to Edison, we have to envision people putting YouTube on their Smart TVs or phones and either using it as background to other activities or perhaps actively watching.

Many audio types see their peak listening in the midday hours (10am-3pm). Audiobooks, owned music, podcasts, SiriusXM, and streaming all have middays as the daypart with the greatest amount of average listening. SiriusXM might come as a bit of a surprise here, as so much of its image is dominated by Howard Stern and other morning offerings. But the lure of commercial-free music leads many SiriusXM users to report long spans of listening through the midday hours.

Afternoons, or "PM Drive Time” (3pm-7pm), are when Music Channels on TV have the most listening. Keep in mind that what we are looking at here is each platform on its own, and the proportion of listening during each daypart for that platform. This is not looking at the dayparts and ranking each platform's listening during that daypart.

1/25 WAKE-UP CALL: The General Election Is Underway

Donald Trump and President Biden say the general election has begun, as Nikki Haley looks to keep her primary campaign afloat. The former U.N. Ambassador and the super PAC backing her signaled she would continue battling the former president, including in the Feb. 24 South Carolina primary, though he won yesterday’s New Hampshire primary by double digits. South Carolina is Haley’s native state, which she served as governor, but she trails Trump by more than 30 points in the polling average there. Her strategy includes fresh fundraising efforts and an initial $4 million ad buy in the Palmetto State. Trump’s resounding New Hampshire victory showed some warning signs for November. He risks losing enough Republicans and a substantial share of independent voters to hurt him as a general-election candidate.

➤ISRAEL WAGES NEW BATTLE: The Israeli military said it was pushing into the west of Khan Younis and was engaged in fierce fighting with some of Hamas’s strongest fighters after encircling the southern Gaza city, where the population has swelled by hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians. Israel said Wednesday it was targeting Hamas militants using snipers, tanks and aerial fire and was aiming to destroy complex tunnel networks and infrastructure used by the group. Israeli officials say they believe that inside the city are Hamas’s leadership and Israeli hostages, whom Israeli officials are seeking to free in part through military pressure on Hamas. The military thrust into Khan Younis reflects a new phase in the war as Israel shifts to urban fighting that is more time consuming and dangerous for its troops. About two dozen Israeli troops were killed in central and southern Gaza on Monday in the deadliest day for the military in Gaza since the war began on Oct. 7, according to the Israeli military.

➤RUSSIAN MILITARY JET CRASHED CARRYING 65 POWs: A Russian military plane with 74 people aboard, including 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war, crashed on Wednesday in Russia’s Belgorod region near the border with Ukraine, Russia’s Defense Ministry said. There were no survivors, according to Vyacheslav Gladkov, governor of the Belgorod region. It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the crash, though Russia accused Ukraine of shooting down the plane.

Russia's Defense Ministry said it was investigating the crash, which came as Ukraine was marking the 700th day since the start of Moscow's full-scale invasion.

➤U-S RESPONDS TO MISSILE ATTACK: Houthi militants fired three anti-ship ballistic missiles Wednesday at an American-owned and operated cargo ship in the Red Sea, defying a U.S.-led military effort to prevent attacks on commercial shipping. Two of the missiles aimed at the Maersk Detroit were shot down by the USS Gravely, a guided missile destroyer, and the third fell into the sea, according to a statement from U.S. Central Command. The attacks by the Iranian-backed Houthis followed a joint strike Monday in Yemen by U.S. and Great Britain warplanes and ships. The Houthis have launched more than 40 attacks from Yemen since November in what they maintain is a reaction to Israel’s invasion of Gaza.

NYC Radio: 77WABC Morning Host Sid Rosenberg to Air Live From Israel

Sid Rosenberg, the host of 77 WABC’s Sid & Friends In The Morning -- the #1 commercial News/Talk morning show in New York City -- will broadcast live from Jerusalem, Monday, January 29 through Thursday, February 1, 6 am to 10 am EST. Rosenberg, who is active in the New York Jewish community and has streaming listeners in Israel, decided to make the journey following the October 7th attacks. The trip is sponsored by One Israel Fund.

John Catsimatidis, owner of Red Apple Media and 77 WABC, stated, “WABC Radio is guided by the principles of fairness, common sense, and truth. Our hearts go out to Jews around the world, as well as all innocent civilians who have lost their lives during these attacks initiated by terrorist groups on October 7, which hurt all people in the Middle East. Many Israelis and Palestinians were trying to work together until Hamas created this chaos. While there have been other attacks over the past twenty years, this is the most significant. Sid is carrying 77 WABC’s message for world peace.”

“I am in awe of the strength of the Israeli people,” said Rosenberg. “It is with great reverence that I make this trip to honor those who were killed, tortured, or are still held hostage. I am proud that John Catsimatidis and WABC Radio support this important mission.”

During his visit, Rosenberg will honor the thousands of innocent Israelis who were slaughtered. He will travel to the site of the Nova Music Festival and kibbutzim near the Gaza border where many of the attacks took place.

Chad Lopez, President of Red Apple Media and 77 WABC, commented, “Like all Americans and people around the world, we are distraught by the actions taken against Israel. Sid is making a noble journey, and 77 WABC listeners in New York and around the world will tune in as he shares his experience.”

Since the October 7 attack, Rosenberg has interviewed Natalie Sanandaji, a young woman who is a survivor of the Nova Music Festival; Rachel Goldberg, whose son Hersch is being held hostage by Hamas; Siggy Flicker, an Israeli American podcaster, television personality, and writer; and more.

4M Viewers Watched Fox News Channel For NH Primary Coverage

FOX News Channel’s (FNC) special coverage of the 2024 New Hampshire primary trounced the competition on cable news, yet again beating the average of CNN and MSNBC combined in primetime viewers, according to data from Nielsen Media Research. FNC was second in overall primetime television, outpacing both ABC and NBC and coming behind only CBS.

In the 8 PM/ET hour, when each network called former President Donald Trump’s win, FNC delivered 4 million viewers and 521,000 in the 25-54 demo, beating CNN and MSNBC combined in viewership. The hour rounded out the top three highest-rated in all of television, coming behind only Celebrity Jeopardy and NCIS and occupied 55% of the audience share among the 8PM/ET timeslot in cable news.

At 9PM/ET, FNC’s special coverage continued with 3.7 million viewers and 495,000 in the demo, again besting CNN (1 million viewers; 257,000 A25-54) and MSNBC (1.77 million viewers; 242,000 A25-54) combined. Helmed by chief political anchor Special Report’s Bret Baier and anchor and executive editor of The Story Martha MacCallum, FNC’s Democracy 2024: New Hampshire Primary from 10PM-12AM/ET averaged 1.9 million viewers 293,000 in the 25-54 demographic, again beating the competition more than combined in viewers.

Altogether, FNC’s primetime coverage from 8-11PM/ET delivered 3.3 million viewers and 453,000 in the 25-54 younger demo. In primetime, FNC more than tripled CNN’s (994,000 P2+) and crushed the network in the 25-54 demo (246,000 A25-54). Additionally, FNC nearly doubled MSNBC in both categories (1.75 million P2+ and 237,000 A25-54.) FNC also nearly doubled its primetime audience versus 2012, posting a 45% increase in viewership, while CNN was down double-digits in both categories and lost 39% in the 25-54 demo.

FNC’s coverage of the 2024 New Hampshire dominated in total day, averaging 1.7 million viewers and 208,000 in the 25-54 demo from 3-3AM/ET. The network made viewership gains versus last week’s caucus in Iowa, growing its audience among every category.

FOX News Go, according to Adobe Analytics, experienced a strong day of engagement across key performance indicators, notching triple digit increases in key categories versus calendar year 2023. Across FOX News Go devices, the New Hampshire Primary drove 158,000 unique viewing devices and 185,000 media initiates between 8-12 AM/ET. Unique viewing devices were up 149% and media initiates were up 101% compared to the average weekday in 2023. According to Emplifi, FOX News garnered 592,000 across Facebook, X and Instagram.

Texans at Ravens Delivers 32.4M Viewers For ESPN

ESPN’s NFL Divisional Playoff presentation was a record-shattering showdown for ESPN, marking consecutive years in which the final game of the season was its most-watched NFL game ever, playoffs or regular season, dating back to 1987 when ESPN acquired NFL rights. The record viewership joins Monday Night Football in cementing a landmark season for the NFL on ESPN.

With an audience of 32.4 million, Houston Texans at Baltimore Ravens (ESPN, ABC, ESPN+, and ESPN Deportes on Saturday, Jan. 20) surpasses the 2023 Super Wild Card Monday night game featuring the Dallas Cowboys at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (January 16, 2023) for ESPN’s top spot.

The Texans-Ravens audience peaked at nearly 37 million viewers late in the game (7 – 7:15 p.m. ET).

ESPN’s Five Most-Watched NFL Games Ever Have Aired Previous 13 Months; Multiple Monday Night Football Games Amongst the Records
With the addition of this season’s ESPN’s Super Wild Card Monday night game (Eagles at Buccaneers), ESPN’s three most-recent playoff games are also its three most-watched NFL games ever.

Inclusive of all NFL games, regular season and playoffs, ESPN has aired its five most-watched NFL games ever in the past 13 months (January 2023 to January 2024) and six of the seven highest-viewed games, buoyed by a record-setting 2023 Monday Night Football season.

Salem Radio Network Extends Dennis Prager

Salem Media Group, Inc. has announced SRN nationally syndicated host Dennis Prager and Salem Radio Network have reached an agreement on extending his show. At Dennis’s request, the show will be two, rather than three, hours, but each hour will contain six more minutes of talk than at present. Dennis decided to shorten his daily 3 hour show to 2 hours, beginning February 5th in order to complete his monumental five-volume Bible commentary, The Rational Bible, as well as three other books.

As part of the new agreement, Dennis Prager will do a monthly virtual “hangout” with subscribers to his Premium Club, Pragertopia +. This will provide listeners with even greater engagement with Dennis. “Listeners always want more content, and this gives me a chance to interact with listeners in a brand-new way,” said Prager.

Dennis Prager
The new agreement will keep the show on SRN for the foreseeable future, in the middle of the strongest conservative talk lineup on the air.

“Dennis Prager is a true talk radio icon and has been for the last 42 years since he first began on the radio at KABC in Los Angeles hosting the original ‘Religion on the Line,’” said Salem Sr. Vice President of Spoken Word, Phil Boyce. “Millions of listeners spend the day with Dennis, enjoying his wit, wisdom, and knowledge. He is one of the most viral talk hosts on the air today, and we wanted him to remain on the Salem Radio Network for years to come.”

Salem is offering third-hour affiliates the opportunity to take an hour of Charlie Kirk, who broadcasts in the same Noon to 3 pm Eastern time slot. To make up for the reduction of the third hour, Dennis will be adding new exclusive content at the start of each of the two hours, giving listeners an opportunity to hear what’s on Dennis’s mind straight up at the top of the hour. This new 5 minute-segment, offered at the top of each hour, has never been done before by any syndicated nationally host.

R.I.P.: Melanie Safka, Sang At Woodstock

Melanie Safka (1948-2024)

Melanie Safka, who performed at Woodstock and won an Emmy Award in 1989 for her songwriting on the CBS series "Beauty and the Beast," has died.

The singer, who went by the mononym Melanie, was 76 years old, USA Today reports.

Her children shared the news Wednesday in a post on the singer/songwriter's official Facebook page. "This is the hardest post for us to write, and there are so many things we want to say, first, and there’s no easy way except to say it," the statement begins. "Mom passed, peacefully, out of this world and into the next on January, 23rd, 2024."

The post continued, "She was one of the most talented, strong and passionate women of the era and every word she wrote, every note she sang reflected that. Our world is much dimmer, the colors of a dreary, rainy Tennessee pale with her absence today, but we know that she is still here, smiling down on all of us, on all of you, from the stars."
