The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards drew their largest same-day audience in 11 years, averaging 8.43 million viewers across CBS and MTV after a live telecast from Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater.
Nielsen live-plus-same-day figures put the total 51% above last year’s 5.6 million, which itself had been a six-year high and the first CBS simulcast. Not since 2015, when MTV alone reached 12.73 million, has the show pulled a bigger same-night crowd.
The Wrap reports CBS carried most of the load: Snoop Dogg’s telecast averaged 7.61 million viewers, up 52% from 5 million a year ago. MTV’s simulcast, including an encore, averaged 686,000, up 40% from 491,000.
The show peaked above 15 million during the opener, when Madonna returned for her first VMA performance in 23 years with Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX.
In advertiser demos it was the most-watched VMAs among adults 18-49 since 2018 (2.66 million) and among 25-54 since 2019 (3.11 million). Viewers 18-34 totaled 1.14 million, the best since 2020.Social metrics followed the ratings.
The telecast ranked as the day’s most-discussed program, with 31.1 million interactions and 159 million video views, up 8% year over year. It hit No. 1 on X worldwide, trended in 10 countries and spawned 18 related topics.
Taylor Swift accepted the inaugural MTV Artist Director Honor and premiered the video for “Patient Zero.” The show was scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET / 4:30 p.m. PT but started late because CBS was still in the Baltimore Ravens–Dallas Cowboys NFL game.
