Ella Langley Dominates The Charts

Ella Langley

Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas,” a languid country ballad about losing a cowboy sweetheart to a woman from Texas, has spent 15 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s chart, making the 27-year-old one of only three women to reach that mark as a solo artist and surpassing the previous records held by Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” and Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together.”

The song, co-written by Miranda Lambert, has earned more than a billion streams and currently leads tracks by Taylor Swift and Drake. Rolling Stone has called it the song of the summer.

Yet the hit is ubiquitous in some feeds and nearly invisible in others. In an era of algorithm-driven listening, a song can dominate a large audience without becoming a shared cultural moment, said Clayton Durant, an adjunct professor of music business at New York University. He tells CNN.  “There’s hits in what we call subcultures,” he said. “If you’re not involved in a particular subculture, or your feed isn’t giving you that particular subculture, you as a consumer may not feel that there’s an actual hit… even though within that community… it’s actually a major hit.”

The fragmentation dates to the rise of streaming after Napster, which ended the musical monoculture that once made Houston and Carey household names across audiences. Langley’s track was released in October '25 and gained traction after the holidays as a TikTok sound used more than a million times, including by Hailey Bieber. Google searches for Langley spiked in late June.

Langley grew up in Alabama, was homeschooled until seventh grade, and has said her first audience was the cows on her family’s pasture. She has released music professionally since she was 18 and signed with Sony Music Nashville and Columbia Records two years ago. Duets with Riley Green helped establish her in country radio. Her other current hits include “Be Her,” an upbeat answer to “Jolene,” at No. 4, and the Morgan Wallen collaboration “I Can’t Love You Anymore” at No. 8.

Her first tour leg sold out quickly, prompting added dates; tickets to an upcoming New Hampshire show are listed above $900. Melinda Newman, Billboard’s executive editor for the West Coast and Nashville, said Langley’s easy voice and Southern twang have drawn country and pop listeners of both genders. “There’s just kind of a love affair going with her right now.”
