LA Times Journalists Rebel Against Owner

Journalists at the Los Angeles Times are in revolt against Patrick Soon-Shiong, the 72-year-old owner, following his decision to offer voluntary buyouts amid ongoing financial struggles. The traditionally liberal newspaper has seen a decline in readership as Soon-Shiong attempts to balance political viewpoints, leading to significant layoffs last year with over 100 jobs cut.

The Times will reportedly slash commentary from its left-leaning opinion writers — and staffers are said to be fuming over the owner cozying up to President Trump.

Robin Abcarian, Jackie Calmes and LZ Granderson were informed by their superiors that they are expected to publish one opinion piece per week rather than their usual two, according to a report in Oliver Darcy’s Status newsletter.

Soon-Shiong, who admits to annual losses of $30 to $40 million, is pushing for a more centrist approach, including introducing a 'bias meter' and reducing the output of left-leaning columnists. His comments in an interview with The Free Press, criticizing the newsroom's "dogma" and blending of opinion with fact, have further inflamed tensions.

Staff reactions have been sharp, with many expressing disbelief and criticism over the timing and tone of the buyouts, especially given their recent hard work on wildfire coverage. Internal Slack messages reveal a newsroom frustrated with Soon-Shiong's public critiques and lack of engagement with staff.
