4/11 WAKE-UP CALL: 5th Victim Dead In Louisvile Bank Shooting

A lone gunman stormed a bank in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, on Monday morning, killing four people and injuring eight others before dying in a confrontation with police. Officials later identified the suspect as Connor Sturgeon, 23. Sturgeon worked as a summer intern for the bank for three consecutive years, eventually joining as a commercial development professional in 2021 and a full-time associate and portfolio banker last year. Sturgeon, 25, murdered five people on Monday at a bank in Louisville, having found out he was to lose his job at the bank. His actions have stunned those who knew him. 


How Sturgeon went from being a high school sporting champion and sensitive, emotionally-intelligent university student to mass murderer is now being investigated by police. 'I know everyone always says this about shooters,' a high school friend said. 'But I truly would have never expected it to be him.'

The Louisville Metro Police Department said Sturgeon entered the bank at 8:30 a.m., before it had opened to the public, and started firing.  Witnesses said they spotted Sturgeon with a “long assault rifle” firing several shots on the first floor of the bank building.

 A fifth victim of the Louisville bank shooting has died in hospital, police confirmed on Monday evening, as the company says there are 'no adequate words' to tell of their loss. The five were senior executives at the bank.  Tommy Elliott, 63, a close friend of Governor Andy Beshear, was named among the dead, as were Joshua Barrick, 40; James 'Jim' Tutt, 64; and Juliana Farmer, 57. They were declared dead at a press conference on Monday afternoon. The death of Deana Eckert, 57, an executive administrative officer at the bank, was confirmed later on Monday evening by Louisville police. The five were shot dead by their former colleague Connor Sturgeon, 25, when he stormed a conference room at Old National Bank at 8.30am - half an hour before the branch opened to the public.  

➤LEAKED INTEL RESULTS IN MILITARY CHANGES: CNN said Ukraine was forced to amend some military plans ahead of its long-anticipated counter-offensive because of the leak of dozens of secret documents. U.S. officials are trying to trace the source of the leak, reviewing how they share secrets internally and dealing with the diplomatic fallout. The documents detail topics such as information on the Ukraine conflict, in which Washington has supplied Kyiv with huge amounts of weapons and led international condemnation of Moscow's invasion. Asked about the report, Ukrainian presidential aide Mykhailo Podolyak said Kyiv's strategic plans remained unchanged but that specific tactics were always subject to change. Some national security experts and U.S. officials have said they suspect the leaker could be American, but have not ruled out pro-Russian actors.

➤TENN LAWMAKER RETURNS TO HOUSE CHAMBER: Nashville City officials voted to return former state lawmaker Justin Jones to the Tennessee House of Representatives just days after he and a fellow Democratic legislator were removed by the chamber’s Republican leaders. Jones, who represented Nashville, and Justin Pearson, who represented parts of Memphis, were last week expelled from the legislature in a rare punishment for speaking out of turn on the House floor. Another Democratic state lawmaker, Rep. Gloria Johnson, narrowly avoided expulsion on the same charges as her freshmen colleagues.  Messrs. Jones and Pearson, who are Black, and Ms. Johnson, who is white, were accused of disorderly conduct on March 30, following a school shooting that left six dead earlier that week. A 28-year-old suspect killed three students and three adults at a private Christian school in Nashville last month; police killed the shooter at the scene.

➤CHARGED UP URGENT WARNING TO ELECTRIC CAR DRIVERS AS THIEVES TARGET MOTORS WHILE THEY'RE CHARGING: Electric car drivers are being warned about the increasing risk of charger thefts with replacements costing hundreds. Thieves are starting to steal electric car chargers, which motorists plug in at home to save going to public pay-as-you-go points. The cables are sometimes stolen from the vehicle's boot but can be removed at a charging point if the car is unattended and the scrap value for materials in a cable may be worth around $62, plus second-hand chargers are being sold for around $248.

➤FBI WARNS AGAINST USING PUBLIC PHONE CHARGING STATIONS: The FBI recently warned consumers against using free public charging stations, saying crooks have managed to hijack public chargers that can infect devices with malware, or software that can give hackers access to your phone, tablet or computer.

➤BUD LIGHT SALES PLUNGE: Bud Light sales have plunged and its distributors in the Midwest, the South, and rural areas are 'spooked' in the aftermath of a partnership with trans TikToker Dylan Mulvaney. Distributors for Anheuser-Busch products, the company that owns Bud Light, have reported dwindling sales over the weekend, according to a report from trade publication Beer Business Daily. It comes as a video of a man claiming to be a merchandiser for an A-B affiliate went viral on Twitter as he lamented poor sales and the impact on his livelihood.

✞MAD MAGAZINE CARTOONIST AL AJFFEE DIES: Al Jaffee, Mad magazine’s award-winning cartoonist and ageless wise guy who delighted millions of kids with the sneaky fun of the Fold-In and the snark of “Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions,” has died. He was 102. 

Jaffee died Monday in Manhattan from multiple organ failure, according to his granddaughter, Fani Thomson. He had retired at the age of 99. Mad magazine, with its wry, sometimes pointed send-ups of politics and culture, was essential reading for teens and preteens during the baby-boom era and inspiration for countless future comedians. Few of the magazine’s self-billed “Usual Gang of Idiots” contributed as much — and as dependably — as the impish, bearded cartoonist. For decades, virtually every issue featured new material by Jaffee. His collected “Fold-Ins,” taking on everyone in his unmistakably broad visual style from the Beatles to TMZ, was enough for a four-volume box set published in 2011.

➤DOJ ASKS APPEALS COURT TO BLOCK ABORTION PILL RULING: The Justice Department asked a federal appeals court to block a ruling that suspended approval of the abortion pill. The emergency request said a U.S. district judge in Texas usurped the FDA’s authority by finding that mifepristone shouldn’t have been approved, based on his own “misguided assessment of the drug’s safety.” Democratic-led states announced contingency plans to stockpile the drug. The impact of the Texas decision would be felt throughout the country because the pill is used not only in places where abortion is legal, but also potentially for miscarriage management in states where it isn’t, the DOJ said. The Texas judge found that the FDA had failed to seriously consider legitimate safety questions about the drug, in violation of its statutory duty. The agency approved mifepristone in 2000.

🏀RUDY GOBERT SUSPENDED BY TIMBERWOLVES, OUT VS LAKERS: The Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday suspended center Rudy Gobert for Tuesday's play-in game against the Los Angeles Lakers after he threw a punch at teammate Kyle Anderson in a team huddle Sunday. The Timberwolves will be without Gobert and power forward Jaden McDaniels, who fractured the third and fourth metacarpals of his right hand after punching a wall in an arena tunnel in Sunday's costly victory over New Orleans.

🏀NBA SETS TOTAL ATTENDANCE, AVERAGE ATTENDANCE, SELLOUT RECORDS: The NBA established records for total attendance, average attendance, percentage of capacity and sellouts this season, the league announced in a news release on Monday. A record 791 sellouts easily surpassed the 760 figure set during the 2018-19 season. And the league's arenas were filled to an all-time-high 97% capacity, according to the release. The league's total attendance mark of 22,234,502 broke the previous record of 22,124,559 set in the 2017-18 season, and was aided by a game played at the Alamodome between the San Antonio Spurs and Golden State Warriors, in which 68,323 fans were in attendance.

🏈NFL TEAMS ASKING CARDINALS ABOUT NO. 3 NFL DRAFT PICK: At least six teams have inquired with the Arizona Cardinals about trading up for the third overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft. The Cardinals still are mulling whether to move the pick or make it, according to sources.
 The Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans are widely projected to select quarterbacks with the first and second overall picks, respectively.

🏈HASKINS WAS DRUGGED, BLACKMAILED AND ROBBED PRIOR TO DEATH: Dwayne Haskins was drugged, blackmailed and robbed before the NFL quarterback was struck and killed by a dump truck on a South Florida highway one year ago Sunday, according to a lawsuit filed in Florida last month on behalf of Haskins’ wife, Kalabrya, and his parents. The lawsuit alleges that four of the 14 defendants, Karlee Peyton, Joey Smith, Meriem Yassine and Wissal Yassine, drugged Haskins “to blackmail and rob him causing him and/or contributing to cause him severe injury and death,” though the suit does not include details about the allegations. The lawsuit also alleges that Oriel Patino, the driver of the dump truck, was “driving carelessly,” exceeded the speed limit and “failed to maintain” the brakes and tires on his truck.  Haskins, the 2019 first-round pick of the now-Commanders who played for the Steelers in 2021, died of blunt force trauma on April 9, 2022, after he was struck while walking across I-595 West near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood airport after he had stopped his car on the side of the highway.

⚾RED SOX PLACE SLUGGER ADAM DUVALL ON IL WITH FRACTURED WRIST: The Boston Red Sox placed slugger Adam Duvall on the 10-day injured list on Monday with a fractured left wrist. Boston manager Alex Cora announced the injury before Monday night's game at Tampa Bay, saying the center fielder has a distal left wrist fracture. Duvall was hurt while attempting a diving catch in the outfield in Sunday's game with Detroit. He was hitting .455 with AL-tying best four homers and 14 RBI in eight games through Sunday.

PIRATES' ONEIL CRUZ HAS SURGERY, TO MISS 4 MONTHS: Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Oneil Cruz had surgery and will miss up to four months after suffering a fracture to his left ankle in addition to ligament damage in a collision at home plate, the team said Monday.  The Pirates said Cruz had procedures to stabilize the fractured fibula and address the syndesmosis injury on Sunday night at Allegheny General Hospital. He was placed on the injured list Monday.
