Wake-Up Call: Debt Ceilng Showdown This Week

President Biden, House Speaker McCarthy

President Joe Biden agreed to meet House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Feb. 1 to discuss raising the debt ceiling and avoiding a US default as Republicans seek a deal that includes government spending cuts. The meeting will pit Biden’s refusal to negotiate over the US debt limit against McCarthy’s call for reductions in federal spending as a condition of any deal.

“I want to find a reasonable and a responsible way that we can lift the debt ceiling, but take control of this runaway spending,” McCarthy said Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” where he announced the meeting. “Now I know his staff tries to say something different, but I think the president is going to be willing to make an agreement together.”  Biden will make the case that McCarthy has a constitutional obligation to prevent a national default and will ask whether he intends to meet it, a White House spokesperson said later Sunday.

➤CALI KILLINGS  IGNITED AFTER REPAIR BILL: A farmworker charged with killing seven people at two Half Moon Bay mushroom farms reportedly told investigators he was spurred to carry out the shootings after his supervisor demanded he pay $100 to repair a forklift damaged at work. San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe confirmed to the Bay Area News Group Friday that Chunli Zhao was enraged by the equipment bill, saying that a co-worker was to blame for the collision between his forklift and the co-worker's bulldozer. KNTV-TV, the NBC affiliate in the San Francisco Bay Area, was first to report the development. Authorities say Zhao, 66, shot and killed four workers and wounded a fifth employee Monday at California Terra Garden. He then went to nearby Concord Farms, where he had worked previously, and fatally shot three former co-workers.

➤IOWA POLICE WON'T RELEASE VIDEOS OF OFFICERS SHOOTING TEEN: Police are refusing to release body camera video of three Des Moines officers fatally shooting a 16-year-old boy during a domestic disturbance last month because of state law preventing footage that shows a minor committing a “delinquent act.” The police department was preparing to release the video from all four officers that were involved in the Dec. 26 confrontation before the city's legal department intervened. All three officers who opened fire on the boy, Noah Bollinger, Zachary Duitscher and Thomas Garcie, remain on administrative leave while the department reviews the shooting.

➤DESPITE ODDS, BIDEN KEEPS PUSHING ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN Tenacity: The script is heartfelt and familiar, but Biden keeps at it, hoping to build popular support that will pressure Republicans to change their minds on an assault-weapons ban. Aftermath: As people mourn the dead in Half Moon Bay and Monterey Park in California, a Secret Service report finds that half the mass attacks in the United States between 2016 and 2020 were sparked by personal, domestic or workplace disputes, and that the attackers were overwhelmingly men.

➤UKRAINE'S ZELENSKY SAYS NEW WEAPONS NEEDED:  Ukraine needs new weapons and faster deliveries to confront a "very tough" situation of constant attacks by Russian forces in the eastern Donetsk region, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Sunday. "The situation is very tough. Bakhmut, Vuhledar and other sectors in Donetsk region -- there are constant Russian attacks. There are constant attempts to break through our defences," Zelenskiy said in his nightly video address. "Russia wants the war to drag on and exhaust our forces. So we have to make time our weapon. We have to speed up events, speed up supplies and open up new weapons options for Ukraine."

➤MISSING OHIO ARCHITECT KILLED IN MEXICO WITH FIANCEE: A DNA match has confirmed that Cincinnati architect Jose Gutiérrez is one of four people found buried next to a bullet-riddled vehicle in Zacatecas, Mexico, last week. ➤MEDICARE NEGOTIATING DRUGS PRICES WILL LIKELY SAVE THE U.S. BILLIONS: A provision in the Inflation Reduction Act that allows Medicare to negotiate prices on the costliest prescription drugs each year will likely save the U.S. billions of dollars, as long as the drug industry doesn't interfere.  Beginning in 2026, Medicare will begin negotiating the price of 10 drugs that cost the federal government the most money, followed by 15 more drugs in 2027, another 15 drugs in 2028, and another 20 drugs in each subsequent year.

➤PRISCILLA PRESLEY CONTESTS LISA MARIE PRESLEY’S WILL: Priscilla Presley is challenging “the authenticity and validity” of her daughter Lisa Marie Presley’s will, following Lisa Marie’s death earlier this month. The Dallas actress filed paperwork with the Los Angeles Superior Court Thursday (January 26th), questioning a “purported 2016 amendment” that removed her from the trust. The 2016 amendment named Lisa Marie’s oldest daughter, Riley Keough, and her late son, Benjamin Keough, as successor co-trustees. In the court documents filed by Priscilla, she claims that she was named a co-trustee on Jan. 29, 1993, when Lisa Marie “executed a revocable living trust, which she amended and completely restated on Jan. 27, 2010.” The Naked Gun actress alleges that Lisa Marie’s signature on the 2016 amendment “appears inconsistent with her usual and customary signature,” and that Lisa Marie’s name is spelled wrong. Priscilla also claims the amendment was never notarized.

➤STUDY: WHY HAVE AUTISM RATES TRIPLED?  A study published in the journal Pediatrics showed autism rates have tripled in 16 years. Research from Rutgers University examined 4,000 kids in New York and New Jersey. They found the rising autism rates are linked to greater autism awareness, better diagnostic tools, and a wider definition of being on the spectrum. The greatest increases were among affluent children, which indicates other autistic children in underserved areas may not have access to the same quality of care. According to the CDC, 1 in 44 children have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. "You want to talk to your child’s pediatrician about this because early intervention makes a big difference," said Dr. Jennifer Ashton of ABC News.
