RAILROAD STOPPAGE SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN AVERTED: President Joe Biden announced a tentative agreement was reached to give rail workers better pay, improved working conditions, and “peace of mind around their health care costs.” “I thank the unions and rail companies for negotiating in good faith and reaching a tentative agreement that will keep our critical rail system working and avoid disruption of our economy,” Biden said in a statement. Negotiators from railroad carriers and unions met in Labor Secretary Marty Walsh’s office Wednesday as the sides tried to negotiate a deal ahead of Friday’s strike deadline. A Department of Labor official confirmed that a deal “that balances the needs of workers, businesses, and our nation’s economy” was reached early Thursday morning after 20 consecutive hours of negotiations between rail companies and union negotiators.

🏈WHO’S MISSING AT TONIGHT’S NFL GAME: Tonight’s AFC West game between the Los Angeles Chargers and the Kansas City Chiefs will be missing a few big names. The Chargers won’t have wide receiver Keenan Allen or tight end Donald Parham Junior, who are both out with hamstring injuries. Chargers cornerback J.C. Jackson is a maybe due to an ankle injury. The Chiefs will be missing kicker Harrison Butker, who also has an injured ankle.
🏀NBA DEFENDS LIGHT PENALTY FOR SALVER MISCONDUCT: The NBA is defending its decision to suspend Phoenix Suns and Mercury owner Robert Salver for one year and fine him $10 million for a history of racist and misogynist remarks and general bullying behavior. The penalty seems a bit light to many NBA pros and fans. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said yesterday that the penalty was the maximum possible given that the investigators concluded that Salver had used racist and misogynist slurs but that they were “not motivated by racial or gender animus.”
⚾MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL PLAYERS UNIONIZE: Minor league baseball players officially joined a union yesterday. An arbitrator validated the union authorization cards submitted by 5,000 players. They’re joining the Major League Baseball Players Association. Their first collective bargaining agreement will be negotiated after the season ends.

🏈AARON RODGERS GETS A HAIRCUT: Hair styles are not usually a big interest of football fans, but Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is a recent exception. Fans noticed when Rodgers showed up for the season opener against the Minnesota Vikings with a fresh cut. He explained on “The Pat McAfee Show” this week. Rodgers let his hair grow a year ago to augment his Halloween costume as Keanu Reeves playing John Wick. Then he just let it go until he saw himself on a video from the NFL Honors in February. “Whoo, it might be time,” he said to himself, So, he went to a barber. He did not explain why he had apparently not looked in a mirror for a year.
