Randy Travis Honored At ASCAP Country Music Awards

A surprise pair of Randy Travis fans took the stage Monday night at the ASCAP Country Music Awards to honor the iconic singer, reports The Tennessean.

One, a seven-time Grammy Award-winning vocal powerhouse, performed a stirring take on Travis’ famed song “Promises.” The other, a six-time CMA Entertainer of the Year with the uncanny ability to captivate any room, offered a rousing rendition of 1980s classic “Forever and Ever, Amen.”

It was, of course, Carrie Underwood and Garth Brooks.

Brooks and Underwood honored Travis on Monday night for earning the 2019 ASCAP Founders Award, which puts him in elite company alongside the likes of Tom Petty, Emmylou Harris and Neil Young, among others.

“This man saved country music,” Brooks, a fellow Founders Award recipient, said. “And I gotta tell you I wouldn’t be standing here if it wasn’t for Randy Travis.”

At the 57th annual ceremony, country hitmaker Ashley Gorley continued his reign of tremendous studio success, earning Songwriter of the Year for a record seventh year (and sixth in a row).

The honor comes following a year where Gorley landed seven No. 1 country songs, including Thomas Rhett’s “Life Changes,” Luke Bryan’s “What Makes You Country” and Lee Brice’s “Rumor.” He joined star Dierks Bentley and songwriter Jon Nite for an acoustic rendition of the former’s hit “Living.”

“I want to thank the songs,” Gorley said. “I want to thank God for creating the songs and the people I get to create them with.”

Georgia-raised pop crossover writer Steven Battey landed Song of the Year for his work on Luke Combs hit "One Number Away,” and longtime Underwood and Lady Gaga collaborator HIllary Lindsey earned the ASCAP Global Impact Award. Little Big Town honored the “Girl Crush” co-writer by performing a rendition of the song for the downtown Renaissance Hotel audience.
