Pennsylvania lost a radio broadcasting giant with the passing of Robert “Bob” E. Day, of Clearfield who died unexpectedly yesterday at the age of 71, reports the Progress-News.

“We are shocked,” a representative, who declined to be named and spoke on behalf of WOKW 102.9 FM as a whole, said. “He was an icon. Everyone in Central Pennsylvania recognized his voice.”

Day joined WOKW 11 years ago after 40 years at WCPA.

The spokesperson said Day was talented enough to be a successful broadcaster anywhere in the country but he loved the small town atmosphere of Clearfield.

A native of Michigan, Day moved to Clearfield to work for WCPA. His first day on the air was Dec. 14, 1967 and the first song he played was “Hello, Goodbye” by the Beatles. The Beatles were one of Day’s favorite bands.

The WOKW spokesperson said Day volunteered countless hours of his time for local charities and causes, and helped a lot of people quietly behind the scenes as well.

Mark Falvo, of Clearfield, Day’s longtime radio broadcast partner for Clearfield Bison Football games and other sports, said Day was exceedingly generous, and a kind and honest person, in addition to being a great broadcaster.

“I lost a mentor and a great friend,” Falvo said. “I’m going to miss him.”
