Even in a market that has four radio stations with a full-time sports format, Portland has a glaring hole in sports talk. It is about to be filled.
According to a report, iHM's KPOJ 620 AM, the all-sports station also know as Rip City Radio, will start a weekday show that will run 6 to 9 a.m. It will be the Portland market's only locally-produced morning show.
The show will be hosted by Justin Myers and Andy Bunker, who have been hosting an evening show in Seattle on KIRO 710 AM /ESPN since August.
"It's a huge opportunity because Portland doesn't have a morning show," Myers told The Oregonian on Monday. "That's the biggest thing. Having a local morning show that people can listen to on their way to work is huge."
An official announcement is expected in the next week. Station officials declined to comment.
KPOJ is the flagship station of the Portland Trail Blazers. In addition to carrying games, pre- and post-game shows and other Blazers programming, the station also has "Wheels at Work," a show hosted by Blazers play-by-play announcer Brian Wheeler. The rest of the day, the station carries syndicated programming from Fox Sports Radio.
The new morning show, which has a target start date of March 2, will be Portland's first locally-produced morning sports talk show since 2012.
