D/FW: Radio One Goes "Boom" On KSOC 94.5 FM

Radio-One has flipped a third station to its new Classic Hip-Hop format.  Old School R&R is gone and syndicated morning host Tom Joyner is out.

Friday evening KSOC 94.5 FM flipped from K-Soul to Boom 94.5 FM.  (KSOC is licensed to Gainesville, TX, north of D/FW). The flip comes after crosstown Cumulus-owned KLIF 93.3 FM/Hot 93-3 launched "Classic Hip Hop For The Holidays", featuring commercial free weekends.

The KSOC-FM flip comes after Radio One reports the original Boom in Huston, KROI 92.1 FM scored a Nielsen ratings spike in internal-weeklies moving to a 4.0 share, upward from a previous 0.9 share as an All-News station.

The company also recently flipped WPHI 107.9 FM to Boom in Philadelphia.

Radio Insight says there is a chicken and the egg scenario at play in D/FW. Did 93.3 switch to the format in order to attempt to gain access to the niche first and did Radio-One hastily flip 94.5 afterwards to claim their burgeoning brand in the Dallas market? Or was the 94.5 flip in the works leading to 93.3 quickly attempting to shut it down?

Does this open the door for CBS or another company to launch a CHR competitor to iHeartMedia’s “106.1 Kiss-FM” KHKS with 93.3 out of the format?
