So Who Still Reads A Physical Newspaper?

It’s no secret that print readership has plummeted as a result of the internet, leading to concurrent declines in print advertising markets. Indeed, newspapers are now forecast to generate more US ad dollars from digital than print by 2026, becoming one of the first major markets where this will happen.

So how many people pick up a physical newspaper or magazine? Recent survey results from Attest offer some figures.

Based on a survey of 1,000 US adults (18+) ending in early October, the research indicates that almost 62% read physical/printed newspapers, the highest figure for the year-to-date. About half of those do so relatively frequently: roughly 1 in 10 (10.3%) overall read print newspapers daily, while another fifth (21.8%) do so either a few times a week (13.9%) or once or twice a week (7.9%). In sum, close to one-third read print newspapers on at least a weekly basis.

These figures are in line with past research from MarketingCharts and MRI-Simmons, in which 37% of US adults surveyed reported having read a print newspaper in the previous 7 days.

For its part, the Pew Research Center estimates that weekday circulation fell to below 26 million in 2020, down from a peak decades earlier of more than 63 million.

Not surprisingly, there’s far more engagement with news websites and apps. Some 82% of adults surveyed by Attest report accessing news online, including 30% who do so daily and another 30% who do so at least once or twice a week.

R.I.P.: Robert Clary, Last Surviving Hogans' Heroes Star

Longtime French actor, singer and Holocaust survivor Robert Clary, known for his lead role in “Hogan’s Heroes,” has died at age 96, reports TheWrap.

Clary died Wednesday morning in his Los Angeles home, his granddaughter, Kim Wright, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Clary — named Robert Max Widerman at birth — was born March 1, 1926, in France and forced into internment in a Nazi concentration camp as a child. At age 27, he moved to United States to pursue his career.

Clary is most notable for his role as Corporal Louis LeBeau on the World War II-centered sitcom “Hogan’s Heroes.” Before his death, Clary was the last living cast member from the series’ original principal cast.

NBC Bay Area Offers Highly Similar Report on Pelosi Attack As NBC

A new NBC Bay Area report about the assault on Paul Pelosi last month includes several of the same details in NBC News' retracted national report that suggested Pelosi may not have been in immediate danger when police arrived prior to his attack, reports Fox News Digital.

NBC News national correspondent Miguel Almaguer reported on Nov. 4 for "Today" that police didn’t know they were responding to the Pelosi residence, Pelosi opened the door for police but didn’t attempt to escape or declare an emergency, and even walked away from law enforcement and toward his eventual attacker.

Almaguer’s report was erased from all NBC News platforms later in the day. It was scrubbed from social media, and NBC News issued an editor's note on its website, reading, "This piece has been removed from publication because it did not meet NBC News reporting standards."

However, a local NBC reporter’s similar story was not retracted and remained online.

Last Friday, exactly one week after Almaguer’s report was mysteriously retracted with little public detail, NBC’s San Francisco local affiliate KNTV, which is branded as NBC Bay Area, aired an explosive report with highly similar details indicating Pelosi opened the door for police and didn’t immediately attempt to escape.

Charged Perp
Anchor Jessica Aguirre told viewers the NBC Bay Area investigative team "looked into why state and federal prosecutors each describe one specific detail of the police response differently," before tossing it to reporter Bigad Shaban.

"This all has to do with the moments, seconds really, just before Paul Pelosi was struck in the head with a hammer inside his San Francisco home. Now, there continues to be contradicting accounts of a relatively simple question," Shaban told viewers. "Who opened the door that night when San Francisco police arrived to the Pelosi house?"

Shaban explained that a federal indictment indicates "two officers" opened the door, but the San Francisco District Attorney’s office had previously stated, "Mr. Pelosi opened the door with his left hand."

Wake-Up Call: Republicans Control The House

Republicans recapture House majority, winning narrow control of a chamber they hoped to dominate. The hopes of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy of claiming a resounding majority were blunted by a far stronger showing for Democrats than anticipated. The far right of the lower chamber has vowed to investigate President Biden's family and policies, but passing legislation will be more difficult in a closely divided chamber.

There will now be split control of Congress as Democrats captured a thin Senate majority with the reelection of Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto in Nevada.

Russia unleashed one of the biggest barrages of the war on Tuesday; its defense ministry said its precision strikes were at least 20 miles from the Ukraine-Poland border. The two people killed in Poland appear to be the first fatalities in a NATO country directly linked to the Ukraine conflict. Meeting in Indonesia, the G-20 nations—including Russia and China—unanimously endorsed a declaration saying the war is hurting the global economy and calling for the fighting to end.

Fresno Radio: Skippy Exits News/Talk KMJ

Former KMJ radio personality Frances “Skippy” Echeverria offered a little more explanation Wednesday to her departure from one of Fresno’s top radio stations.

A 20-plus-year veteran of radio, she had spent nine years hosting mornings at New Rock 104.1 in Fresno before joining KMJ's afternoon line-up in 2019 with Philip Teresi.

On Friday she announced her retirement from radio, reports The Business Journal.

“The station has meant more for me personally that I can ever explain,” Echeverria said during the final minutes of the show, as reported by The Fresno Bee.

The Bee report also noted that Echeverria’s name had been removed from the 2-6 p.m. show’s intro and Teresi had not mentioned her absence at the start of the show Monday.

Frances “Skippy” Echeverria
In a blog post on the website Medium Wednesday, Echeverria offered an explanation about what is a common practice in radio.

“As for my departure, it was not abrupt, and it certainly was not with any ill will. But the truth about radio is that one minute you’re there, and the next your gone,” she wrote. “…radio does move on the minute you’re gone. It’s not an industry that looks back. So there was nothing strange about my existence being wiped clean by Monday. It’s nothing personal or nothing dramatic. It’s not good, or bad, it just is.”

She also wrote about a special goodbye she received in the parking lot at Fresno’s “Radio City” office building that houses Cumulus Radio, owner of KMJ and several other stations.

“I walked out Friday to find one of my absolute most amazing friends in the parking lot, blasting Green Day’s ‘Good Riddance’ from her car. Fitting even more so because that was also one of the songs my high school played at our graduation,” she wrote.

Kahl Out, Reisenbach In At CBS TV Network

Kelly Kahl, the respected head of the CBS television network for five turbulent years, will step down next month, clearing the way for veteran programmer Amy Reisenbach to succeed him, reports The L-A Times..

CBS President George Cheeks announced the moves Wednesday, noting Kahl’s departure was “part of a restructuring and streamlining of leadership at CBS Entertainment.” Reisenbach now will oversee the network’s prime-time, daytime and late-night creative departments, the company announced

In her expanded role, Reisenbach — a Kahl lieutenant who has been at CBS for 17 years — also will be responsible for comedy and drama development, alternatives and specials, current programming and scheduling and casting.

CBS’ efforts to thin its management ranks comes as television companies brace for a tough 2023 amid linear ratings declines and forecasts for a possible recession that has already put a dent in advertisers’ budgets. Major companies throughout the industry, including Warner Bros. Discovery and NBCUniversal, are cutting hundreds of employees. CBS, which is part of Paramount Global, is also making cuts.

Amy Reisenbach and Kelly Kahl

Reisenbach takes the helm as the network has 16 of the top 25 shows this season in broadcast television.

Report: Fired Tiffany Cross Wanted To 'Take Down' MSNBC

Ex-MSNBC host Tiffany Cross learned that she was getting pushed out days ahead of her exit — and threatened to “go out in a blaze” and “take down” the cable-TV network and its boss Rashida Jones, The NY Post is reporting.

The controversial anchor — whose weekend show “The Cross Connection” was abruptly canceled earlier this month as MSNBC elected not to renew her contract, according to sources — began frantically calling other journalists, media executives and social activists a week before her ouster in a bid to rally support, a source with knowledge said.

“She made calls saying: ‘I’m going out in a blaze and I’m taking down the network and going after Rashida,'” a source close to the situation said, paraphrasing Cross.

MSNBC execs and Jones, the network’s president, did not get wind of the phone calls until after Cross was let go, sources told The Post. It is unclear how Cross knew of her looming dismissal, but insiders speculated that her agent had been given the news while trying to negotiate a new contract for his client.

MSNBC declined to comment.

Disney's Hiring Freeze Extends To ABC News

ABC News boss Kim Godwin this weekend informed staffers on the network’s daily editorial call that ABC News will need to implement a hiring freeze, with the exception of executive producers and producer, reports TV Newser.

Godwin added that business travel—outside of newsgathering—will also be frozen.

The announcement comes in light of a memo Disney boss Bob Chapek sent to division leaders last week.

“We are limiting headcount additions through a targeted hiring freeze,” Chapek said in a memo. “Hiring for the small subset of the most critical, business-driving positions will continue, but all other roles are on hold. Your segment leaders and HR teams have more specific details on how this will apply to your teams.”

TV Ratings: 'Yellowstone' Truly Epic For Paramount

Kevin Costner's Paramount epic “Yellowstone” reached 12.1 million viewers for the opening night of its fifth season on Sunday, the most popular scripted series episode so far in the new television season, reports AP News citing Nielsen data.

That it was a cable network series — instead of a big broadcaster like CBS, NBC or ABC — makes the achievement that much more impressive.

The total viewership involved a little trickery: the show simultaneously aired on Viacom networks CMT, TV Land and Pop, and there were some same-day reruns. Even with that, there were 9.4 million viewers who saw the premiere episode on Paramount alone.

“Yellowstone” is one of the most appointment viewing-friendly shows on television now, in part because it appeals to an older audience more used to watching TV in a traditional way, said Josef Adalian, West Coast editor of New York magazine's Vulture.com.

“People want to watch it and they want to watch it now,” Adalian said. It also proves the enduring popularity of the Western as a genre and, in some respects, it's surprising there haven't been copycats.

The show is overwhelmingly popular in red states. States with Republican governors — topped by Texas — watch “Yellowstone” three times as much as states with Democratic governors, according to Philo, a live TV streaming service.

While “Yellowstone” is a huge success for Paramount, the company is also making money for a corporate rival. Streaming rights for previous seasons of the series are owned by Comcast's Peacock service, because the Paramount+ streaming outlet did not exist when they were up for grabs.

Among the broadcast networks, NBC had the most viewers in prime time last week, averaging 5 million. Fox had 4.6 million, ABC had 3.9 million, CBS had 3.7 million, Univision had 1.2 million, Ion Television had 950,000 and Telemundo had 750,000.

Study: Marketers And Agencies Increase Commutes And Days

Marketers and agencies are increasing their commutes and spending more time at the office, according to a new Advertiser Perceptions study of 303 media agencies and brands commissioned by the Cumulus Media | Westwood One Audio Active Group®.

Interviews took place October 3-10, 2022, and the results were compared to the same study conducted in April 2022. The Cumulus Media | Westwood One Audio Active Group® also commissioned a Maru/Blue study to examine the commuting habits of everyday Americans. The nationally representative study was conducted November 9, 2022, among 1,516 adults 18+.

This week’s blog outlines the findings from both studies.76% of marketers and agencies now commute to the office, up from 63% in Spring but still less than average Americans.
  • 87% of Americans are commuting to work, 15% more than marketers and agencies.
  • The average number of marketer/agency office days grew from 3 to 3.5 but is less than the 4.3 office days of average Americans.
  • Average Americans are clocking more days at work compared to marketing industry. 28% of marketers and agencies work 1 or 2 days at their workplace compared to only 12% of everyday Americans. 24% of brands and agencies work 3 days at the office compared to just 10% of the total U.S. Twice as many average Americans are commuting 5 days a week (56%) compared to the marketing industry (26%).
  • Increases in the number of days in the office were driven by large marketers and agencies. The most significant growth in the number of days in the office came from marketing firms with 1000+ or more employees.
  • Of the 23% of brands and agencies who are still working from home, half say they are never going back full time.
  • 62% of marketers and agencies have resumed in-person media vendor meetings, up from 41% in Spring.
  • 58% of marketers and agencies have resumed in-person conferences and events, up nearly 2X from Spring, and 24% say they will begin attending conferences in the next three months.

Wake-Up Call: Trump Announces Third Consecutive Presidential Bid

Donald Trump has officially announced he is running for president for the third time in 2024 in a speech attacking President Biden, the 'radical left' Democrats and their record in the two years since he left office.

The former president defied Republican critics and those who blamed him for the GOP 's disappointing midterms to go full steam on stating his intent to be back in the Oval Office with the country 'being destroyed before our very lives'. 'I order to make America great and glorious again, I am today announcing my candidacy for president of the United States,' he confirmed to huge cheers. 'This won't be my campaign, this will be our campaign. Just like I promised in 2016, I am your voice,' he said while celebrating the last six years of the MAGA movement and the battle against 'corruption' in Washington.

After months of speculation and with mounting legal battles, he filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission just moments before he began his speech to supporters at Mar-a-Lago. In his stately ballroom with opulent gold trimmings and chandeliers and in front of wife Melania and members of his family, he was introduced as the 'next president' to chants to 'USA'. 'America's comeback starts right now', he said, and then went on to attack Biden for record inflation, 'falling asleep at global conferences' and making the U.S. 'detestable' with the rest of the world. He celebrated Nancy Pelosi getting 'fired' with Republicans on the cusp of taking the House majority.

Meanwhile, Ron DeSantis, 44, addressed the Republican Governors Association meeting in Orlando on Tuesday night - while, 200 miles to the south, Donald Trump was announcing his 2024 bid. While Trump used his Mar-a-Lago speech on Tuesday to hit back at his critics within the party and insist that his strategy in the midterms was effective, DeSantis was able to point to a truly triumphant campaign. DeSantis was resoundingly re-elected as Florida governor last week, even winning in Democrat strongholds such as parts of Miami. Asked before his Orlando speech, at another event in Fort Walton Beach, how he felt about Trump's launch, DeSantis replied: 'At the end of the day, I would just tell people to go check out the scoreboard from last Tuesday night.' DeSantis then told the governors how his work in Florida could be replicated nationwide. Chris Christie, the former head of the Governors Association, on Tuesday morning condemned Trump's electoral strategy for the midterms, and urged the party to move away from him.

➤ARTEMIS LAUNCHED:  NASA launched its most powerful rocket in 50 years early Wednesday, sending an uncrewed capsule skyward on a 25-day mission to orbit the moon and return safely to Earth. The agency’s Space Launch System rocket, with an Orion capsule perched atop it, cleared its Kennedy Space Center launchpad on the Florida coast just after takeoff at 1:48 a.m. local time, its four main engines and twin solid boosters lighting up the night sky.  The mission, called Artemis I, marks the inaugural flight of both the SLS rocket and the Orion crew capsule. And it kicks off NASA’s multi-mission Artemis program, which is focused on sending astronauts, including the first woman and the first person of color, back to the moon’s surface by as early as 2025.

Hannity Remains In Trump's Corner

Donald Trump's 2024 bid for the U.S. presidency was broadcast live and welcomed on the Fox News “Hannity” show on Tuesday, even as others in Rupert Murdoch-controlled media oppose giving the former president another tilt at the White House, reports Reuters.

But the news network cut away about halfway through Trump’s hour-long speech for analysis and commentary before returning to the live feed and more measured commentary, in contrast to past practice when Fox routinely broadcast entire speeches by Trump.

Host Sean Hannity returned to the live feed, which continued beyond his primetime hour and into Laura Ingraham’s “Ingraham Angle,” where both the host and her guests had a more measured response to the announcement.

Swifties Overwhelm Ticketmaster

Millions of Taylor Swift fans swarmed Live Nation Entertainment Inc's Ticketmaster website on Tuesday seeking seats for her first tour in five years, causing periodic outages and long online waits that often ended in disappointment.

Retuers reports the ticket-selling site told fans on Tuesday morning, via a statement on Twitter, that it was experiencing "intermittent issues" that the company was "urgently" working to resolve.

Later, Ticketmaster tweeted that there had been "historically unprecedented demand" for Swift's "The Eras Tour," her first since 2018, from millions of people. Ticket sales for West Coast shows were delayed by three hours.

Fans reported waiting in online queues for up to eight hours, and many finding they were too late to purchase tickets, which cost between $49 and $449 each.

Other Swifties said they were repeatedly dropped from queues and turned their ire toward Ticketmaster. Some said they took a day off work and felt the process should have gone more smoothly.

A Ticketmaster spokesperson said the number of people who registered for the early sale was more than twice the number of tickets available, and that millions of others also jumped online to buy.

Beyoncé Reigns Over Grammy Nominations

Will Beyoncé—one of the most celebrated music stars of the 21st century—finally conquer the Grammy Awards? That’s the question looming over next year’s ceremony, which takes place Feb. 5 in Los Angeles and is shaping up to be the most competitive in years.

The Wall Street Journal reports The Recording Academy, which runs the Grammys, announced its nominations on Tuesday. Pop-R&B superstar Beyoncé has more nominations than any other artist, with nine nods, including in top categories like album of the year (for “Renaissance,” her highly-regarded homage to dance music) and record and song of the year (for “Break My Soul,” its lead single).

That brings her to a total of 88 career-wide nominations. Beyoncé is now tied with her husband Jay-Z for the most nominations in Grammy history. (He picked up five this year.) Beyoncé is already the most-awarded female Grammy winner, with 28 awards. If she wins four more, she will break the record for most Grammy wins of any recipient.
