Twitter Returns After Global Outage

Twitter said its service was back online following a major outage on Thursday that kept thousands of users across the globe from accessing the social media platform.

The near three-hour outage affected as many as 50,000 users at its peak at around 8:15 am ET, according to Reuters citing outage data from tracking website Downdetector.com.

The incident comes days after Twitter sued Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk for violating his deal to buy the company and asked a Delaware court to order the world's richest person to complete the takeover. read more

"We had some trouble with our internal systems that impacted many of you globally. Twitter should be up and running as expected," the social media company said in a tweet.

Twitter is hosted on Amazon Web Services and also uses Google Cloud as its secondary vendor, Wells Fargo Securities analyst Brian Fitzgerald said.

The analyst ruled out a problem at cloud vendors as a reason for the disruption.

Twitter had suffered another widespread outage in February that it blamed on a software glitch. read more

Other big technology companies have also been hit by outages in the past year, with a near six-hour disruption at Meta Platforms (META.O)keeping WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger out of reach for billions of users in October. read more

Notorious for outages in its early years, Twitter was known for using its popular "Fail Whale" illustration, which showed a beluga whale being lifted by birds, during such incidents.

Topeka Radio: Locally-Owned 96.9 The Beat Debuts

Topeka got it first Black-owned local radio station, 96.9 The Beat, over the airwaves at noon on Thursday.

WIBW.com reports 96.9 The Beat, the Capital City’s new number one radio station for R&B, Hip-Hop, and Throwbacks in the Topeka and Lawrence areas launched at noon on Thursday, July 14, with 1,969 Beats In A Row on 96.9 KQRB-FM and online.

The new station, owned by Intrepid Companies LLC, said its headquartered in Topeka which makes the Beat the only locally owned commercial radio station in the area.

Intrepid managing partner Don Sherman noted that being close to the community empowers listeners.

“Being a locally owned radio station means we can be flexible, respond to what the listeners want, and super-serve our communities,” Sherman said. “The music, engaging on-air personalities, and news our audience can use will lead to increased listenership that crosses barriers like age and race.”

The Beat said it is home to a mix of local, regional and national radio personalities - like nationally syndicated DeDe In The Morning. It said listeners can call 8-333-969-969 toll-free to request songs, win station swag and send shout-outs.

“Our goal at The Beat is to embrace and super-serve the community on-air, online, and on the streets,” Sherman said. “This station build is a two-year labor of love and we are ready, willing, and excited to be part of the fabric of Topeka and Lawrence.”

The Beat noted that its primary target demographic is adults 18-54 who love R&B, Hip-Hop and Throwbacks. It said it will accept inquiries from businesses in Topeka and Lawrence for a limited number of strategic partnerships at sustainable low advertising rates, which will be locked in as long as a contract is in effect.

Sherman said he has a passion for radio borne of extensive experience in the industry. From 2000-2007, he said he owned Wichita-based Sherman Broadcast Group. At that time, he said he was the first African-American majority radio station owner in Kansas.

Of nearly 12,000 radio stations in the nation, Sherman noted that only 168 are Black-owned.

SiriusXM, Comscore Bring Cookie-Free Audience Targeting to Podcasts

SiriusXM and media measurement firm Comscore have agreed to bring the latter’s cookie-free targeting tool, Comscore Predictive Audiences, to the audio company’s podcasts and ad tech podcast ecosystem Adswizz. With more targeting capabilities, the audio company is aiming to increase programmatic podcast ad revenue.

The deal will let marketers target their audio ads at hundreds of audiences on podcasts, based on attributes tied to content consumption, using Comscore’s global opt-in panels and Adswizz’s artificial intelligence contextual categorization engine. As such, the companies note Predictive Audiences is developed from an initial set of privacy-compliant consumer data. The cookie-free targeting capability will let marketers target consumer audiences, based on topics like their TV and streaming consumption, gaming habits and life stage, among others.

The audio company said Predictive Audiences will reach its combined advertising sales organization, which includes SiriusXM, Pandora and Stitcher, SXM Media, later this year.

Predictive Audiences for audio is backed by Comscore’s audience behavior data, collected from screens like desktop, mobile and streaming, which then is used to understand the types of content suitable for that audience, according to Comscore vice president, ad platforms partnerships Jessica Trainor.

Podcast ad revenue is expected to grow to $2 billion by 2023. As it increases, the industry is trying to balance keeping the environment premium, while supporting the efficiencies of programmatic trading.

According to SiriusXM’s Q1 earnings, Pandora’s ad revenue and its podcast business made $336 million in Q1, an 8% year-over-year increase. The company’s total Q1 revenue amassed 2.19 billion, a 6% year-over-year increase.

SiriusXM is the representative of four of the top fifteen podcasts in the country, including Office Ladies, Dateline NBC and Pod Save America, its senior vice president and head of communications Jessica Casano-Antonellis told Adweek. This also includes true crime podcast Crime Junkies, with over 22 million downloads a month. The company also holds the number one spot for podcast advertising network in weekly U.S. listener reach, per Edison Research.

NuVoodoo Study: What Stations Need To Know For PPM Wearables

NuVoodoo Media Services announces findings of NuVoodoo Ratings Prospect Study 20, fielded nationwide in June 2022, to its largest sample ever of 5,495 14-54-year-olds across all PPM markets, including over 1,000 likely ratings respondents.

Among the study findings is that likely ratings respondents are far more likely to listen to the radio and for much longer than the ordinary American, with key insights for Nielsen’s upcoming “wearables” people meter rollout.

NuVoodoo’s latest findings will be presented to the radio industry in the first of three free webinars entitled “The Wearable Wolf” on Tuesday, July 19th at 1:00pm EST/10:00am PST. The webinar will also be offered on Monday, July 25th at 12:00pm EST/9:00am PST, and again on Wednesday, August 3rd at 2:00pm EST/11:00am PST. Register now to reserve your spot for this limited capacity online event. Additional advance study findings are available now in a Webinar Video Preview.

Carolyn Gilbert, President, NuVoodoo Media Services, said: “NuVoodoo’s upcoming webinar series will review new study data and provide stations with a research silver bullet to help them better anticipate The Wearable Wolf and the impact of Nielsen’s new “wearables” people meter rollout. For 10 years, we’ve been making these studies available free of charge to all members of the radio industry, whether or not we work with them as clients, to help broadcasters navigate changes in media that are only getting faster.”

Leigh Jacobs, EVP, Research Analysis, NuVoodoo Media Services, said: “With Nielsen set to replace as much as 75% of the PPM panel with new wearable meters by year’s end (and the remainder changing over in 2023), NuVoodoo invested in its largest sample yet for its 20th semi-annual Rating Prospects Study presentation. 5,495 respondents participated, to make sure we’d have enough respondents to dive into the subgroups of likely rating respondents who predict they’d carry the new wearable meter in each of its three forms: clip mount, pendant, and wristband.”

In fact, when given the choice of three wearable ratings devices – the wristband, clip mount, and pendant - a 57% majority chose the wristband. Gen Xers (the 42-54’s in the sample) had the thinnest majority (53%) choosing the wristband and a comparatively robust 26% liked the idea of the clip mount (basically a smaller pager). Fully 60% of Gen Z (14-25’s in the sample) and Millennials (26-41’s) said they’d opt for the wristband.

While overall time spent listening variances are small, the TSL profiles for those who prefer each of the devices are not identical. The comparatively heavy interest in clip mounts among Gen X means there will be heavier listeners to be mined from the clip mount squad. Conversely, TSL could be harder to come by from a population of pendant wearers.

PJ Kling, VP Research, NuVoodoo Media Services, noted: “If there is one finding from this study that anyone responsible for budgeting and planning in radio should pay attention to, it’s this: Only 20% of our total sample screened in as likely rating participants. It’s more than a thousand folks out of our total group of well north of five thousand overall in the study.”

Kling added: “34% of respondents don’t listen to the radio at all (or enough to be counted by Nielsen). Yet, nearly 40% of RPS Yes Ratings Likelies spend an hour a day or more with radio EVERY DAY. That’s a massive divergence! It shows how the fate of every broadcast executive in the U.S. is in the hands of a tiny fraction of the overall population, and it has nothing to do with the overall reality. Finding those listeners likely to say “yes” to Nielsen and directing their listening in your station's favor isn’t just a luxury reserved for those lucky to have the budget, it’s the cost of doing business.”

RAB Pushes Back On SiriusXM eMail Bash Claims

The RAB has issued a response to a recent eMail sent by SiriusXM. As part of a marketing campaign, this week SiriusXM sent an email to consumers asking, “Why waste your time with AM/FM Radio?” Negative advertising, selling products or services by putting the competition down, is a marketing strategy that demonstrates a lack of strength in the product or service as a standalone. In the case of SiriusXM, when taking a look at their most recent earnings report, it’s no wonder their strategy was to go after the undisputed leader in the audio space, AM/FM broadcast radio.

The SiriusXM email, naturally, was met with an emotional reaction by radio professionals, but the email contained no rationale for their leading question.

Broadcast radio leads with facts:
  • Radio reaches 218M people 18+ weekly as compared to SiriusXM’s 34M subscribers. (Sources: Nielsen, RADAR 153, June 2022; SXM Q1 2022 Results)
  • Radio reaches 93% of adults every month compared to satellite radio at 13%. (Source: Nielsen Audio Today 2022, June 2022)
  • Most people listen to AM/FM radio and not SiriusXM – 76% of people listen to AM/FM radio while 11% only listen to SiriusXM (Source: Edison Research Share of Ear Q2 2021-Q1 2022)
  • AM/FM radio is the audio source used most often in the car: 43% of adults use it vs. 14% using SiriusXM with an even greater gap among Hispanic and Black audiences. (Source: The Infinite Dial 2022, Edison Research/Wondery/ART19)
  • 51% of radio listeners state that their connection with radio is a main reason why they listen and 62% of radio listeners state that radio’s on-air personalities are a main reason why they listen. (Source: Jacobs Media, Techsurvey 2022)
  • With over 15,000 local radio stations providing live and on-demand content 24/7 across a variety of formats, languages and platforms, radio delivers what the consumers want, whenever they want it. (Source: FCC, December 2021)
  • Radio is trusted more than any other media.
  • Radio doesn't just reach the community; it is woven into the fabric of community. Radio stations bring consumers together and motivates them to act.
  • Radio is essential to consumers and communities. Time after time, when disaster strikes, radio stations are "on the ground" and often the first and only source to provide timely information and provide the support to the communities it serves.
  • In exchange for obtaining a valuable license to operate using public airwaves, broadcast radio stations are required by law to operate in the public interest. This is simply the foundation. Radio stations go well beyond what is required to unite audiences around common interests and social and community values.
Radio, across its platforms, is a go-to source for its great storytelling, the emotional connections it provides, the talent that consumers consider to be their friends and the trusted information and entertainment, whenever and wherever the listener wants and needs it. From rock to religion, from country to hip-hop, in Spanish, English or another language, radio is there offering diversity of content to a diverse listening audience.

No other media option can do all this. No other media offers this to consumers for free. The reality is quite simple, time spent with AM/FM radio is time well spent.

The latest RAB one-sheet detailing the above insights can be found in English and Spanish here.

Wake-Up Call: Biden Begins Mideast Trip In Israel

President Biden began his Mideast visit yesterday in Israel, offering strong reassurances about Iran's growing nuclear program, saying during an interview that he'd use force as a, quote, "last resort" to keep Iran from getting nuclear weapons. During the interview with Israel's Channel 12, which was taped before Biden left the U.S. and aired yesterday, Biden said, "The only thing worse than the Iran that exists now is an Iran with nuclear weapons,” and when asked about using military force against Iran, said, "If that was the last resort, yes." In his first trip to the region as president, Biden was welcomed with a red-carpet arrival ceremony at the airport attended by Prime Minister Yair Lapid and President Isaac Herzog, with Herzog thanking Biden for championing Israel during his more than 50 years in public office. Biden also visited the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, where he rekindled the eternal flame and greeted two Holocaust survivors. He is set to meet today with Israeli officials including Lapid, Herzog, and opposition leader and former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

➤LATEST INFLATION REPORT IS BRUTAL:
Prices are up 9.1% over the past year — the highest rate since 1981.

While many experts keep predicting inflation to slow down, the June rate soared at an annualized rate of nearly 17%. Nearly all parts of the economy are buckling under rising prices. Price increases in the past year have leaped for groceries (12%), gas (60%), electricity (14%), new cars (11%), and flights (34%).

Over the past 18 months, the combination of growing home prices and mortgage rates has pushed up the monthly mortgage on a new median-priced home from $1,195 to $1,904. Inflation is slowing down in one key area: wage growth. Which means that real wages have collapsed by 3.6% in the past year, as workers fall further behind.

➤EX-CIA SOFTWARE ENGINEER CONVICTED IN BIGGEST CLASSIFIED INFO THEFT IN CIA HISTORY: Former CIA software engineer Joshua Schulte was convicted yesterday in federal court in New York in the biggest theft of classified information in CIA history. The 33-year-old, who chose to defend himself, was convicted on all nine counts in the so-called "Vault 7" leak. Before being arrested for the massive leak, Schulte had helped create some of the same CIA hacking tools that he disclosed. Prosecutors contended that he was motivated by resentment because he believed the CIA had disrespected him by ignoring his complaints about his work environment. U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said in a statement that Schulte was convicted of, quote, "one of the most brazen and damaging acts of espionage in American history." A sentencing date wasn't immediately set because Schulte still faces trial on charges of possessing and transporting child pornography.

➤SEN. GRAHAM, FIGHTING SUBPOENA, SAYS DIDN'T TRY TO INTERFERE IN GEORGIA'S 2020 ELECTION: Senator Lindsey Graham, who is fighting a subpoena in a Georgia investigation into former President Donald Trump and his allies' actions in the state after his 2020 election defeat, said in a federal court filing that he wasn't trying to interfere in Georgia’s election when he called state officials to ask them to reexamine some absentee ballots. The South Carolina Republican's attorneys said in the filing, "Senator Graham has never inserted himself into the electoral process in Georgia, and has never attempted to alter the outcome of any election. The talk was about absentee ballots and Georgia’s procedures." Graham has been subpoenaed to testify before a special grand jury in Georgia, part of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis' investigation. Graham's attorney also argued he has, quote, "sovereign immunity" from state court procedures pertaining to his job as a senator, and constitutional protection because ”the testimony sought relates to matters within the legislative sphere.”

➤SECRET SERVICE EMPLOYEE SENT HOME AFTER 'PHYSICAL ENCOUNTER' IN ISRAEL: A Secret Service employee who was working in Israel ahead of President Biden's visit that began yesterday was sent home after being arrested following what an agency spokesman called a "physical encouter." He was briefly held and questioned by Israeli police, but wasn't charged with any crime. A woman had accused the employee in the Monday night incident, which the Secret Service said didn't involve an accusation of sexual assault. It happened on the street when agency employees were returning to their hotel after dinner. The accusation is being investigated by the agency.

➤OHIO MAN CHARGED IN RAPE OF 10-YEAR-OLD GIRL WHO HAD TO LEAVE STATE FOR ABORTION:
A 27-year-old Ohio man has been charged with raping a 10-year-old girl whose case drew national attention and was highlighted by President Biden last week after a doctor said the girl had to go to Indiana for abortion, because it was no longer allowed in Ohio following the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade.  The Columbus Dispatch reported that he's believed to be in the country illegally. Some prominent Republicans, including Ohio's attorney general, Dave Yost, and Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, had suggested the story was made up. The suspect, Gerson Fuentes, had an initial court appearance yesterday.

➤ADMIN.: PHARMACIES CAN'T DISCRIMINATE ON REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH PRESCRIPTIONS: The Department of Health and Human Services warned pharmacies yesterday (July 13th) that they can't discriminate against women seeking reproductive health prescriptions, including some that may be used in ending a pregnancy. The announcement stated that pharmacies who get federal money from programs like Medicare and Medicaid can't discriminate in how they supply medications or advise patients on prescriptions. The action reminding pharmacies of their obligations under federal law is the latest from the administration seeking to ensure reproductive health services for women after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

➤7-ELEVEN OFFERS $100K REWARD IN ROBBERIES THAT LEFT TWO DEAD, THREE WOUNDED: 7-Eleven offered a $100,000 reward yesterday (July 13th) for information leading to the arrest and conviction of gunman suspected of robbing six of the chain's stores in Southern California over five hours early Monday morning, leaving two people dead and three wounded. Killed were a clerk at a store in Brea and a man in the parking lot in a Santa Ana store. There were also robberies in Ontario, Upland, Riverside and La Habra. Photos of the suspect have been made public showing a masked man wearing a black sweatshirt with a hood over his head.

➤MEDIA DEBATES SHOW PHOTOS OF MASS SHOOTING VICTIMS:   As mass shootings continue to happen across the country, some in media are suggesting that news outlets, including on TV, online, and in print, should begin showing images of the victims of the attacks, which are frequently carried out with high-powered weapons that do brutal damage. Graphic images of violent crimes victims are rarely shown by U.S. news outlets, out of concern for not wanting to upset victims' families, offend readers, or be seen as exploitative. But some now argue that not doing so amid the epidemic of mass shootings amounts to an evasion of responsibility to show reality. After the Uvalde elementary school shooting, in which 19 children and two adults were killed, NPR's senior vice president for news tweeted, "We cannot sanitize these killings. That in and of itself is an editorial decision." But Bruce Shapiro, executive director of the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma, told the Washington Post that news media should avoid creating a, quote, "sadistic image culture” that desensitizes viewers, exploits victims, and re-traumatizes survivors. He said other kinds of reporting can often be more effective, suggesting journalists ask themselves, "Is blood the only way to jolt the public conscience?"

🏑BLUE JACKETS SIGN GAUDREAU TO SEVEN-YEAR, $68.25 MILLION DEAL: The Columbus Blue Jackets reached a seven-year, $68.25 million deal yesterday with star forward Johnny Gaudreau, NHL free agency's biggest prize. The 28-year-old has spent his entire nine-year NHL career so far with the Calgary Flames, finishing fourth in the NHL MVP voting in two of the past four seasons. Gaudreau had told the Flames this week that he wouldn't re-sign with them.

⚾OHTANI GETS SIXTH STRAIGHT WIN, HITS TRIPLE: The Los Angeles Angels' two-way star Shohei Ohtani got his sixth straight win last night, beating the Houston Astros 7-1, and also hit a two-run triple. The reigning American League MVP struck out 12 in six innings as he improved his record to 9-4. It was the third time this season Ohtani has had double-digit strikeouts and multiple RBIs in a game, something only two other pitchers have done: Atlanta’s Kevin Millwood in 1999 and Detroit's Hal Newhouser in 1946.

⚾BLUE JAYS FIRE MANAGER MONTOYO: The Toronto Blue Jays fired manager Charlie Montoyo Wednesday, with the team having a 46-42 record, but going 3-9 so far in July. General manager Ross Atkins said, "I truly wanted this to work with Charlie and wasn’t able to make that happen. I'm extremely disappointed in where we are. I think we’re better than how we’ve played." Bench coach John Schneider was promoted to interim manager for the remainder of the season. Montoyo was hired after the 2018 season, and went 236-236 in parts of four seasons.

Philly Radio: 97.5 The Fanatic Launching 'The Best Show Ever'

WPEN 97.5 The Fanatic is pairing former Phillies pitcher Ricky Bottalico and weekend host Hunter Brody with Missanelli’s former cohost Tyrone Johnson in a new afternoon show that will air from 2 to 6 p.m. beginning Aug. 1. Jen Scordo will continue to handle news updates and act as the “ringmaster” of the show, which will be called The Best Show Ever? and simulcast on NBC Sports Philadelphia.

“We wanted to build something like nothing else on the air in town,” Chuck Damico, the radio station’s program director, told The Inquirer. “I’m expecting this group to sound great together because they’ll offer a lot of different perspectives and takes, and there will be somebody within this dynamic for everyone to relate to.”

That’s one of the reasons behind the show’s unique title, which Damico said was aspirational.

“The name grew out of a collaborative process started by Tyrone and our group and the folks at NBC Sports Philadelphia,” Damico said. " We believe a show built like this in a city like this with a diverse and dedicated and talented crew has the potential to be the best show ever.”

Bottalico will continue to appear on Phillies pre- and postgame coverage on NBC Sports Philadelphia, where he has a well-earned reputation for not holding back his opinions. As a result, he’ll join the radio broadcast remotely from a studio at the Wells Fargo Center when the Phillies are playing.

According to The Inquirer, the new hosts will have big shoes to fill. Before Missanelli’s abrupt exit from the station at the end of May, he was easily The Fanatic’s most popular personality (although he regularly finished behind 94.1 WIP’s duo of Jon Marks and Ike Reese in the ratings). It remains unclear exactly why The Fanatic and Missanelli decided to part ways so suddenly after a successful 12-year run together.

“Good luck to those guys,” Missanelli said of the new hosts.

Bottalico spent 12 seasons in the majors, seven across two stints with the Phillies, where he was named an All-Star in 1996. After retiring in 2005, Bottalico became an analyst for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, the Phillies’ triple-A affiliate, during their inaugural season in 2008. He joined then-Comcast SportsNet as a Phillies analyst in 2009, and has been with the station ever since.

While most of his experience has been on television, this won’t be Bottalico’s first time hosting a radio show. For several years, he cohosted Baseball Insiders on WBCB-AM 1490 out of Levittown alongside John Brazer, the longtime director of fun and games for the Phillies. He’s also been a regular contributor on The Fanatic’s morning show, hosted by John Kincade.

Johnson and Scordo will be familiar voices in the time slot. Both worked alongside Missanelli — Johnson joined as a producer in 2017, while Scordo was added in 2021 after Natalie Engeloff left for Parx’s Casino — and have continued cohosting following his departure. Johnson also cohosts Sixers Outsiders with Krystle Rich on NBC Sports Philadelphia, and until recently hosted a Saturday morning show on The Fanatic.

The new voice of the bunch is Brody, a South Jersey native who joined The Fanatic in March 2021 to host weekends. Brody previously cohosted the afternoon drive-time show on 97.3 ESPN in South Jersey alongside Mike Gill, and has more than 20,000 subscribers on his Brodes Media YouTube channel.

Damico said Brody, 27, is one of the most driven young broadcasters he’s ever come across, calling him “a real student of sports talk broadcasting.”

Netflix Taps Microsoft For Ad Support Plan

Netflix Inc. selected Microsoft Corp. as the technology and sales partner for its new advertising-supported streaming service, advancing its efforts to reignite subscriber and revenue growth, reports Bloomberg.

Netflix plans to sell a cheaper, advertising-supported alternative to its flagship streaming service by the fourth quarter of this year. People who already subscribe won’t see the ads -- those will be for customers signing up for the new tier.

Netflix long made the absence of ads a major part of its selling point to customers. But slowing growth has forced the company to look for new ways to attract subscribers, and new ways to generate revenue. The company announced plans to enter the advertising business after reporting a drop in customers.

Because Netflix has given itself a tight time frame to get the service up and running, management has searched for an outside partner to handle the sales and technology.

In a blog post Wednesday, Netflix disclosed few details about its plans. Chief Operating Officer Greg Peters has been meeting with potential candidates. Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Comcast Corp. had been seen as frontrunners.

“Microsoft has the proven ability to support all our advertising needs as we work together to build a new ad-supported offering,” Peters said in the blog post. “More importantly, Microsoft offered the flexibility to innovate over time on both the technology and sales side, as well as strong privacy protections for our members.”

Elon Musk Slams MSNBC Over Hunter Biden Tweet

Elon Musk engaged in a war of words with MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle on Wednesday after the left-leaning anchor criticized his decision to post a critical Hunter Biden meme.

Ruhle slammed Musk in response to the post, which featured a man with several cameras strapped to his head and the caption “Hunter Biden every time he buys crack and hookers.”

The verbal skirmish was the latest in a long-running feud between Musk and MSNBC personalities.

Vancouver Radio: Dean Hill Hanging Up Headphones

Dean Hill
CFMI Rock 101's Dean Hill didn't plan to be on the air for nearly 50 years when he was younger.

His route to radio first took a detour through a sawmill on Vancouver Island. One day, he had a bit of an accident.

"The paramedic in the back of the ambulance, looked down on me bleeding in the back and said 'Maybe this isn't your line of work,'" Hill tells Vancouver Is Awesome.

Once he recovered, he followed that advice, and his interest in music and record players, and showed up at CKDA, a radio station in Victoria. They liked his stuff, hired him and he spent the next 47 years on air, with stops in Calgary and Toronto before returning to the west coast.

"The only job I ever begged for was to get out of Toronto," he says; that led him to CFOX in Vancouver.

Over a few years he moved to Rock 101.

"It's kinda freaky, it's scary, it's kinda exciting, it's also time," says Hill of his approaching retirement. "It's been 26, 27 years at Rock 101."

"I just accidentally figured out the other day I've been doing radio for 47 years."

Hill's last show will be on Rock 101 (101.1 FM) in Vancouver on Friday, July 15, 2022.

IBA Unveils Plans For Fall Contesting

The Independent Broadcasters Association (IBA) has announced it will conduct the IBA Fall 2022 National Cash Contest, its fifth since the birth of the IBA in 2020.

“We fully expect this upcoming IBA National Cash Contest to be the most successful campaign we’ve done so far!” stated IBA President and Executive Director Ron Stone. “IBA member stations invest $300 to leverage thousands of prize monies, making this the best ratings and revenue opportunity ever presented; but remember stations must be an IBA member to participate. Nearly $3 million in sponsorship revenue has been generated for participating IBA member stations thus far, with an average of 14.7 to 1 ROI.”

Independent broadcasters representing nearly every state and every size market across the US have leveraged the IBA’s National Cash Contests to collectively give away over $180,000 to their listeners. Stations must be an IBA member to participate. Deadline to register for the Fall 2022 Cash Contest is August 15, and the on-air promotion begins September 15.

IBA National Cash Contests are managed in partnership with Vipology (aka IBA Digital), building and growing the technology, creating contest collateral, and managing winners while providing contest data for member stations. For more data and information, follow this link.

“If it ain’t broke don’t fix it! In all, the IBA National Cash Contests have generated over 100,000 listening appointments, over 2.2 million visits to station websites, and positively impacted participating IBA member stations. Vipology continues to create the technology and manage these successful national cash contests on behalf of the IBA and its members, and we’re proud to be changing the radio landscape with IBA member stations” remarked Vipology CEO Chris Peaslee.

The IBA, which launched in July of 2020, is dedicated to independent radio stations in ways they are not currently being served by existing organizations, providing strategies that drive revenue with cost benefits at scale. With over 1,500 stations, the IBA is now the fastest growing advocacy association in America.

To join the IBA, stations may log on to https://www.iba.media/ or reach out to Ron Stone at ronstone@iba.media. To learn more about Vipology’s national cash contesting platform, stations may contact Michael W. Kay, Vipology CRO, at michael@vipology.com or at (678) 616 1645.

GeoBroadcast Calls NAB Claims Misleading

An “issue paper” created in June, currently being circulated by the National Association of Broadcasters, as well as a newly submitted letter to the FCC signed by state broadcasters’ associations are designed to specifically misinform and disseminate misleading information about the simple rule change proposal currently in front of the Federal Communications Commission. In March 2020 GeoBroadcast Solutions asked the FCC to revise its rules so the broadcast radio industry could choose, on a voluntary basis, to deploy 21st century technology to compete and recover lost revenue by airing geo-targeted programming, including emergency alerts, news, and advertising.

The modest proposed rule change -- RM-11854 - relates solely to FM boosters and requested no changes to the FCC's rules regarding translators or interference, but the NAB decided, after first being for the rule change that is was now against it, and in so doing has reached for various flawed reasons. For instance, NAB has never explained why geo-targeting capability is good for the TV industry, thanks to a rule change NAB persuaded the FCC to adopt in 2017, but is not good for the radio industry. It remains a mystery why NAB cannot encourage this change in radio, where it’s needed the most.

“The radio industry’s rapid decline and concentration of shrinking revenue in a tiny number of station groups is obvious to anyone paying attention. But the NAB and its affiliated state associations insist that what the radio industry needs is more of the same: more regulation and less innovation. They seem to think that not innovating, adapting to the likes of Facebook, Google and their ability to geo-target content, is the way to success. The good news is that most small and mid-sized station owners know the opposite is true. We are confident the FCC will, too,” said a spokesman for GeoBroadcast Solutions.

July 14 Radio History

➦In 1917...Douglas Edwards born (Died at age 73 – October 13, 1990). He anchored CBS's first network nightly television news broadcast from 1947–1962, which was later to be titled CBS Evening News.

Douglas Edwards
Edwards joined CBS Radio in 1942, eventually becoming anchor for the regular evening newscast The World Today as well as World News Today on Sunday afternoons. Edwards came to CBS, after stints as a newscaster and announcer at WSB in Atlanta, Georgia and WXYZ in Detroit, Michigan.

In the mid-1940s, Edwards was host of the radio program Behind the Scenes at CBS.

In 1947, as CBS's top correspondents and commentators shunned the fledgling medium of television, Edwards was chosen to present regular CBS television news programs and to host CBS's television coverage of the 1948 Democratic and Republican conventions. The term "anchor" would not be used until 1952, when CBS News chief Sig Mikelson would use it to describe Walter Cronkite's role in the network's political convention coverage.

At first, Edwards would be eclipsed by John Cameron Swayze of NBC News's Camel News Caravan, but he would eventually regain his ratings lead. By the mid-1950s, the nightly 15-minute newscast Douglas Edwards with the News was watched by nearly 30 million viewers.

Edwards' last newscast on the evening news was on April 13, 1962. Edwards was replaced by Walter Cronkite, and the program became Walter Cronkite with the News. On September 2, 1963, the program was retitled CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite and became the first half-hour weeknight news broadcast of network television and was moved to 6:30 p.m. .

Edwards subsequently moved back to CBS Radio, where he delivered the network's flagship evening newscasts The World Tonight for many years.

➦In 1927...NBC newsman John Chancellor was born in Chicago. He spent most of his career with NBC News. He served as anchor of the NBC Nightly News from 1970 to 1982 and continued to do editorials and commentaries for NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw until 1993.

During the 1976 election he introduced the concept of Red and Blue states, which survives to this day.

He died of stomach cancer July 12 1996, two days shy of his 69th birthday.

➦In 1957…Master satirist Stan Freberg debuted a new weekly comedy program on CBS Radio Network in the time slot previously occupied by Jack Benny.

In addition to Freberg, the cast included June Foray, Peter Leeds, and Daws Butler. Billy May arranged and conducted the music. The program failed to attract sponsors and the network cancelled the series after 15 episodes. It was the last U.S. network radio show to devote itself purely to comedy.

➦In 1969...WBZ 1030 AM, Boston increased its talk programming to a full 10 1/2 hours-a-day.

Increased competition in the top 40 format — first from WMEX 1510 AM which had programmed a top 40 format since 1957, then from WRKO, which adopted the format in 1967 — led WBZ to shift its music programming to adult contemporary in 1969, playing several songs an hour between 6 and 9 a.m. (though it was not unheard of for Carl DeSuze to play only one, if any, song an hour during his show), 10 to 12 songs an hour between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., and 4 to 6 songs an hour between 4 and 7 p.m..

At night, WBZ programmed talk shows, with such hosts as Guy Mainella, a pioneer in sports talk; Jerry Williams in the evenings; and Larry Glick's overnight show. Music was also programmed during the day on weekends.

Beginning in the late 1960s, WBZ made a major push into live play-by-play sports. From 1966 through 1979, and again from 1991 through 1994, WBZ was home to radio broadcasts of New England Patriots.  In the fall of 1969, WBZ regained the radio rights to the Boston Bruins (which it had lost in 1951), and also began carrying Boston Celtics basketball. The Bruins stayed through the 1977-78 season.

➦In 1984...FLASHBACK..from R&R Week of July 13, 1984:

➦In 2015…Marlene Sanders died at age 84 from cancer (Born - January 10, 1931). She was a TV news correspondent, anchor, producer and executive who worked for ABC News in the 1960s and 1970s and moved to CBS News in 1978. She is known for being the first woman to achieve several milestones in the then male-dominated field of television news.

Shortly after joining ABC News as a correspondent in 1964, Sanders became the first woman to anchor an evening news broadcast for a major network when she substituted for the regular anchor, who had become ill. She was also the first woman to report on the Vietnam War from the field. In 1976, ABC promoted her to vice president and director of documentaries, making her one of the first women to reach upper management in the field. She also won three Emmy Awards for documentaries she produced for CBS.
