Voting Company Sues FOX News For $2.7B

Electronic voting systems maker Smartmatic on Thursday sued Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News cable network and Rudolph Giuliani, a lawyer for former President Donald Trump, claiming they falsely accused the company of helping to rig the U.S. presidential election in favor of Joe Biden.

The defamation suit, filed in New York County Supreme Court, also names as defendants former Trump lawyer Sidney Powell, Fox Corp and Fox hosts Lou Dobbs, Maria Bartiromo and Jeanine Pirro.

Smartmatic alleged Fox and other defendants invented a story that the election was stolen from Trump and made Smartmatic “the villain in their story.”

The suit seeks more than $2.7 billion in compensatory and punitive damages. Smartmatic also asks for defendants to retract false statements.

“Fox News Media is committed to providing the full context of every story with in-depth reporting and clear opinion,” a Fox News Media spokesperson said in a statement. “We are proud of our 2020 election coverage and will vigorously defend this meritless lawsuit in court.”

Florida-based Smartmatic’s technology was only used in one place for the Nov. 3 presidential election - Los Angeles County, which Biden won.

“This is a first step in trying to recover our reputation and trying to set the record straight,” said Smartmatic Chief Executive Antonio Mugica in an interview.

After the election, Trump and some of his supporters spread false claims of election fraud, including that Smartmatic and competitor Dominion Voting Systems manipulated the results.

Smartmatic in December demanded Fox News retract allegations leveled by its employees and guests, but Fox did not comply.

Instead the network aired an interview on the three hosts’ programs with an outside expert who said there was no evidence to support the Smartmatic claims by Fox hosts and guests.

NYC Radio: Rudy Fumes Over 77WABC Disclaimer

Rudy Giuliani was pretty incensed on his radio show Thursday after a disclaimer was added to the show during a commercial break, reports The Wrap.

WABC Radio inserted in the following statement before cutting back to Giuliani’s show: “The views, assumptions and opinions expressed by former U.S. Attorney, former attorney to the President of the United States and New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, his guests and callers on the program are strictly their own, and do not necessarily represent the opinions, beliefs or policies of WABC Radio, its owner Red Apple Group and other WABC hosts or our advertisers.

“I would have thought they would have told me about that before just doing what they just did,” Giuliani said after he came back on air. “Rather insulting.”

Giuliani then tried to make the disclaimer some sort of free speech issue. “Gives you a sense of how far this free speech thing has gone. And how they frighten everybody. I mean, we’re in America, we’re not in East Germany. They got to warn you about me? I’m going to have to give that a lot of consideration. I also think putting it on without telling me, not the right thing to do. Not the right thing to do at all.”

Throughout the rest of his show, Giuliani continued to advance the same claims about 2020 election fraud he’s been making since last year. And even some of his listeners seem to have grown tired of it, as evidenced by a caller who asked Giuliani if he felt “somewhat guilty about spreading a lot of unproven conspiracy theories to folks who may not have the ability or critical thinking skills” and if maybe Giuliani was “taking advantage of the gullible.”

It’s unclear why the disclaimer was added, but it might be to insulate the radio from potential legal exposure. In recent weeks right wing media outlets have been threatened with lawsuits from voting machine makers Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic.

On Thursday Smartmatic sued Giuliani and Fox News for $2.7 billion for defamation and spreading lies that their machines were involved in tampering with the 2020 election results. Giulani is also currently facing a $1.3 billion lawsuit filed by Dominion.

We’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the many talented people who have been and still are part of this journey. KISW eventually evolved its focus in the 1980s to album-oriented rock, playing the best-selling albums from the top rock acts. In the 1990s as Nirvana and Pearl Jam led an international change of music, KISW was the first to play them and their contemporaries. Over the years, personalities and shows like “Robin and Maynard,” “Langan and West,” “Crowe and West,” “Bob Rivers Twisted Radio,” Howard Stern, “BJ and Migs” and “The Mens Room” have helped the station serve entertainment and rock music to the greater Seattle area, reaching over 600,000 listeners as the city’s top-rated radio station.

Listeners can tune in to the 50th anniversary celebration on 99.9 KISW in Seattle on air, as well as nationwide on the RADIO.COM app and website. Fans can also connect with the station on social media via Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

John Sadak Named New PxP Voice For MLB Cincy Reds

John Sadak will join the Reds television broadcast team to call play-by-play, replacing longtime broadcaster Thom Brennaman who resigned after muttering an anti-gay slur last season.

New to Cincinnati, Sadak, 41, most recently served as a national TV play-by-play announcer for CBS Sports, a national radio play-by-play announcer for Westwood One and as a radio play-by-play announcer for the New York Mets on WCBS 880.

His broadcast work includes the play-by-play of the NFL, NBA, MLB, college football, basketball, and baseball along with almost 15 years in minor league baseball.

“My family and I are beyond thrilled at this tremendous opportunity. Calling Major League Baseball games full-time has been my career and life goal for many years,” said Sadak, a New York native. “The chance to do so for the Cincinnati Reds, a franchise known for its rich, extensive history and passionate, loyal fanbase, is a dream come true. We can’t wait to immerse ourselves in our new home city and ballpark. Baseball’s legendary Opening Day can’t arrive fast enough.”

ak will be a regular contributor to Reds Live pre- and post-game shows on FOX Sports Ohio.

On Aug. 19, Brennaman was heard saying the words “One of the f-- capitals of the world” moments after the Fox Sports Ohio feed returned from commercial break before the top of the seventh inning in the first game of a doubleheader at Kansas City.

Brennaman, 56, said he did not know that his remarks went out over the air until the end of the first game in that doubleheader.

Eugene Radio: Chadd & Kristi Joining KMGE For Wake-Up Duty

McKenzie River Broadcasting is introducing a new husband and wife duo to host their Mix 94.5 morning show. Most recently with WDZH-FM (The Breeze) Detroit, Chadd and Kristi join McKenzie River Broadcasting’s AC  KMGE 94.5 Mix FM for mornings.

The duo will replace Liz and Reilly. Liz (Kelly) will move to middays while (Mary) Reilly is exiting the radio business to concentrate full-time on her real estate career. The start date for Chadd and Kristi is March 1.

“I’m excited to bring Chadd and Kristi to the McKenzie River Broadcasting family in Eugene. Not only is it a great husband-wife show with a proven record in Detroit and Tampa, but these are two great people,” comments Jeff Baird, Director of Programming/Operations. “It’s a bold investment in local programming especially in this time when radio stations around the country are moving away from live and local shows as a move to manage their costs. We look forward to the impact that Chadd and Kristi will have on the Eugene-Springfield media market and creating the next chapter for KMGE.”

Chadd ads “We are beyond excited to be able to continue our morning show in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. We can’t wait to get the opportunity to soak up the culture and beauty of Oregon and get to know all of the great listeners in the Eugene area.”

“Chadd and Kristi” will be on-air weekday mornings from 5:30am to 10am on 94.5 MIX FM. Along with their morning show, Chadd assumes the APD role for KMGE and Kristi becomes the Social Media Director for the group.

News Corp Reports Most Profitable Quarter Since 2013

News Corp said net quarterly profit nearly tripled, driven by strong growth at its book-publishing and digital real-estate businesses as well as at Wall Street Journal parent Dow Jones & Co.

The New York-based media company, which owns the Journal, HarperCollins Publishers and news organizations in the U.K. and Australia, posted net profit of $231 million, or 39 cents a share, in the quarter ended Dec. 31, compared with $85 million, or 14 cents a share, a year earlier, thanks to improved performance and lower operating expenses. Revenue slipped 2.6% to $2.41 billion, primarily due to the loss of contributions from its coupon-publishing unit, which was sold last year.

Chief Executive Robert Thomson said the latest quarter was the company’s most profitable in its current iteration, since it was split off in 2013 from the entertainment business, an entity now known as Fox Corp.

He also said Dow Jones had its largest quarterly profit since News Corp acquired it in 2007, and that the long-struggling New York Post had achieved a profit. “That is the first profit in modern times, at the very least, for what was a chronic loss-making masthead founded in 1801 by Alexander Hamilton,” Mr. Thomson said.

The company’s book-publishing unit, HarperCollins Publishers, posted a 23% revenue increase to $544 million, while segment earnings jumped 65% to $104 million, led by such titles as Steve Doocy’s “The Happy in a Hurry Cookbook.”

News Corp calculates segment earnings as revenue less operating and administrative expenses. Segment earnings exclude expenses such as interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization, impairment and restructuring charges, and other items.

Dow Jones, the publisher of the Journal, Barron’s and MarketWatch, reported a 43% rise in segment earnings to $109 million, thanks to the highest digital-advertising growth rate in 10 years and increases in digital subscriptions. Revenue rose 3.7% to $446 million, 70% of which came from digital revenue.

Dow Jones reported a 29% increase in digital-advertising revenue, which was offset by a 29% decline in print-advertising revenue. Overall, ad revenue slipped by 4%.

The Journal averaged more than 2.46 million digital subscribers in the quarter, up from over 2.35 million in the September quarter. Including the print edition, the Journal averaged 3.22 million subscribers in the period, a record.

United Stations Partners With Tim Richards Media

Tim Richards
United Stations, an independent leader in original network radio programming, has announced a partnership with veteran programmer Tim Richards and his new company Tim Richards Media.

He will act as lead strategist for all of the Monday thru Friday daypart shows that United Stations offers through their growing portfolio of talent in their Dayparts on Demand services roster. In his new role, Tim is consulting with the talent and production staff on content ideas and show structure.

He is also assisting with the presentation, delivery and marketing of the programming as well as scouting new talent to bring under the United Stations Media Networks banner, according to the company's SVP/Content & Affiliation, Stefan Jones in New York.

In announcing the addition of Tim Richards to the United Stations team, Jones commented, “If a radio station is going to trust a Monday through Friday daypart to syndication, it has to bring something special to the table.

I have worked at selling programming to Tim for decades, as did all of my competitors. When he placed my brands on his stations, it was because it made sense, and when he didn't, it also made sense.

What better person to help refine our offerings to make sure that we deliver the best programming options to radio stations. It is a perfect fit, and we are so pleased to have his talents working with United Stations.”

Tim added, “Stefan, Andy Denemark and the United Stations roster of talent are impressive. They continue to innovate in a time where the industry needs great, scalable and affordable talent across the board. It’s an honor to work with this team to grow their audience and talent portfolio.”

After 14-Years, Ryan Seacrest Walks Off The Red Carpet

Giuliana and Seacrest

Ryan Seacrest is parting ways from E! Entertainment’s red-carpet coverage, the host announced Thursday.

The Wrap reports Seacrest, a longtime presence on the network’s “Live from the Red Carpet” coverage at events like the Oscars and the Golden Globes, said Thursday on Instagram  that he would be stepping down from his role as host after 14 years.

“After 14 years of hosting E!’s Live from the Red Carpet I’ve decided to move on to new adventures,” he wrote. “I’ll miss the whole crew that works so hard behind the scenes and of course my amazing partner Giuliana. Thanks to everyone for watching all these years.”

In their own statement, the network said, “E! has long enjoyed our relationship with Ryan over the years especially as co-host of E!’s signature red carpet series. He has been instrumental in giving viewers a front row seat to some of Hollywood’s biggest nights. We are extremely appreciative of his many contributions and he will always be part of the E! family.”

Seacrest’s decision to move on comes at a time when in-person red carpets are few and far between thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, and as Seacrest’s relationship with E! as executive producer of the network’s flagship “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” is set to come to an end later this year.

Seacrest currently hosts ABC’s daytime talk show “Live With Kelly and Ryan” alongside Kelly Ripa, as well as the network’s “American Idol” revival and iHeartMedia’s drive time radio show “On Air With Ryan Seacrest.”

L-A Radio: MLB Dodgers' Voice Jorge Jarrin Retires

The Jarrins: Father, Son In Dodgers' Broadcast Booth

MLB Dodgers' broadcaster Jorge Jarrín, son of Hall of Famer Jaime Jarrín, has announced his retirement following nine seasons calling games in Spanish on both radio and television and 17 years of service to the organization.

Jarrín joined the Dodger organization in 2004 as the club’s Manager of Radio Broadcast Sales and Hispanic Initiatives and became a member of the broadcast team in 2012, calling games on television alongside Dodger great Manny Mota before joining his father in the radio booth in 2015. The Jarríns formed the first-ever father-son broadcasting team on MLB Spanish-language radio and called the Dodgers’ first World Championship in 32 years together in 2020.

Said Jorge Jarrín: “You would think this would be a very difficult decision to make, but I just knew the time was right and I leave with a tremendous sense of gratitude for the Dodger organization. To end with a World Championship is the cherry on top of a dream 32 years in the making! Fortunately for our fans, my dad - the Marathon Man - will continue.”

Jarrín has won numerous awards throughout his 35-year broadcasting career, which began in 1985 as “Captain Jorge” covering traffic from Jet Copter 790 on KABC Radio. He broke into baseball in 2001 on DIRECTV’s “Major League Baseball Game of the Week,” which was broadcast to all of Latin America.

“We congratulate Jorge on 35 award-winning years in broadcasting and thank him for his 17 years of service to the Dodger organization,” said Erik Braverman, Dodger Senior Vice President of Marketing, Communications and Broadcasting. “Jorge was truly an organizational asset, always willing to generously lend his time for community events and his kindness shining through his calls of Dodger baseball. It’s so fitting that Jorge’s final broadcast was the Dodgers’ World Series-clinching victory.”

February 5 Radio History

➦In 1916...Pioneering radio, TV engineer Ernst Alexanderson successfully tested the multiple tuned antenna.  He was a pioneer in radio and television development. Alexanderson designed the Alexanderson alternator, an early longwave radio transmitter, one of the first devices which could transmit modulated audio (sound) over radio waves.  Alexanderson also created the amplidyne, a direct current amplifier used during the Second World War for controlling anti-aircraft guns. During some 45-years working for General Electric,  he was responsible for 322 patents.

➦In 1924...the BBC time signal was first transmitted at 9.30pm, introduced by Sir Frank Dyson, the Astronomer Royal. Ever since that date, equipment at the Greenwich Observatory generates six short “pips” starting at five seconds to the hour and ending exactly on the hour. The pips have been generated by the BBC since 1990 to mark the precise start of each hour.

➦In 1931... Eddie Cantor‘s long radio career got underway as he made his first appearance on Rudy Vallee’s “The Fleischmann Hour” on NBC. By September of 1931 he would be headlining his own variety hour for Chase & Sanborn. The show established Cantor as a leading comedian.

➦In 1940... one of the many Frank and Anne Hummert radio soap operas, ‘Amanda of Honeymoon Hill‘ began it six-year run, the first half on NBC Blue, and then on CBS. It was a 15-minute daily radio soap opera.

➦In 1940...WTIC-FM was one of the two pre-World War II FM stations in Connecticut, signing on the air originally as W1XSO and using a frequency of 43.5 MHz. In December 1941, it became a commercial operation using the call letters W53H. In 1943, the call letters were changed for the last time to WTIC-FM. On April 17, 1948, the station moved to 96.5 MHz where it has remained, and switched to a classical music format. It switched from classical to CHR/Top 40 on May 12, 1977; the first song played as a Top 40 station was "Feels Like The First Time" by Foreigner.

The station's classical music library was donated to the University of Hartford radio station WWUH a few months later.

WTIC 96.5 FM (20 Kw) Red=60dBu Coverage Area
The station switched to its current Hot AC format on June 15, 1994. This was done in order to remove controversial rap music from its playlist.

After the switch, the station's sound has become decidedly softer in subsequent years compared to its past, though this has changed in recent years, as the Hot AC format as a whole has embraced more upbeat music. Since 1977, the station has referred to itself on the air variously as "Hot Hits 96 Tics","96TIC-FM", and "The New 965 TIC-FM".

The original WTIC-FM Top 40 format in the late 1970s consisted of only current hit songs (no oldies) in a high-energy, jingle-heavy presentation designed by consultant Mike Joseph, and it was an instant success. Joseph would later term this formatic approach "Hot Hits" and put it into use at other stations around the United States, most notably WBBM-FM in Chicago.

The station is now owned by Entercom.

➦In 1941...WNYC FM signed on as W39NY and was located at 43.9mc in the early FM band. On September 21, 1943, it became WNYC and in 1946 it moved over to 98.1 on the current FM band. By 1948, it settled on its current position of 93.9 FM.

It has always featured classical and other cultural programming.

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 destroyed WNYC-FM's transmitter atop the World Trade Center. The station's studios, in the nearby Municipal Building, had to be evacuated and station staff was unable to return to its offices for three weeks. The FM signal was knocked off the air for a time. WNYC temporarily moved its offices to the studios at National Public Radio's New York bureau in midtown Manhattan, where it broadcast on its still operating AM signal transmitting from towers in Kearny, New Jersey and by a live Internet stream.

Ringo Starr 10/1961 w/"Rory Storm & the Hurricanes"
➦In 1962...Ringo Starr first appeared with The Beatles when he filled in for ailing Pete Best. Starr first met the Beatles in Hamburg, Germany, in 1960, while still performing with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. As time went on, they asked him to sit in during sets when original drummer Pete Best was unavailable. By the summer of 1962, producer George Martin had become certain the Beatles needed to replace Best.

➦In 1977... “General Mills Adventure Theater” debuted on the CBS Radio network, with host Tom Bosley. The noble attempt to revive radio drama ended a year later.

➦In 1979...The “Sears Radio Theater” first aired on CBS Radio, with Elliott Lewis producing.  While a  critical success, the 60-minute nightly (Mon-Fri) drama anthology did not attract a large loyal listenership. In January 1980 it moved to the Mutual network for a two-year run as the “Mutual Radio Theater.”

➦In 2017…Retired radio sportscaster Ray Christensen, who did play-by-play for University of Minnesota football games for 50 years (1951-2001), all on WCCO beginning in 1963, died at age 92. He began his career in radio at KUOM in 1949 followed by a position as program and sports director at WLOL. In 1963 he joined WCCO radio where he enjoyed a wide variety of broadcasting opportunities until he retired from full-time broadcasting in 1993.

➦In 2017...singer Sonny Geraci, who scored national hits as lead singer of The Outsiders in the 1960s and Climax in the 1970s, died at age 69, four years after suffering a debilitating brain aneurysm.

Jeff Zucker Has CNN Exit Plan

CNN’s Jeff Zucker will depart the company after 2021, he told staffers Thursday.

According to The Wrap citing multiple sources with knowledge, the CNN president confirmed in a morning editorial call that he will stay in his role for the duration of his contract, meaning he will be there through the year.

Jeff Zucker
This comes amid speculation about his future — and, thus, CNN’s future — and about his potential political ambitions. He was expected to step down early this year, and, per people familiar with Thursday’s call, admitted he was considering it before changing his mind.

Zucker’s decision to stay coincides with some major wins for the network. CNN had its most-watched month ever in January and was the top cable news network across the board as a result, according to Nielsen Media Research ratings TheWrap reported earlier this week.

In a month defined by the Capitol riots that left multiple people dead, the second impeachment of outgoing president Donald Trump and the inauguration of President Joe Biden, CNN averaged 1.907 million total viewers in total-day ratings, of whom 531,000 were in the advertiser-coveted age demographic of 25 to 54.

Known as a hands-on leader who frequently watches CNN’s prime time programs from the control room, Zucker joined the network in 2013 after making his reputation at NBC, where he was executive producer of NBC’s Today before jumping to president of NBC Entertainment.

The NYTimes quotes CNN anchor Jake Tapper as saying of Zucker, “he’s the best boss I ever had, and it’s not even close. I’m glad we get him for another year.”

Half-Time Show Aims to Draw Millennial, Gen Zers

  • 41% of self-identified fans of The Weeknd said they’re more likely to watch the Super Bowl this year compared to past years, while 37% of NFL fans said the same.
  • The Weeknd was most popular among millennials (61%) and members of Generation Z (54%).

Half of NFL fans and two-thirds of Weeknd fans said it’s appropriate for halftime performers to promote social justice during their set, according to a poll from Morning Consult.

After dominating last year’s charts, The Weeknd is gearing up to headline Sunday’s Super Bowl halftime show. And new polling finds that his performance will bring new eyeballs to the game and could expand the “Blinding Lights” singer’s fan base, although the attitudes of Weeknd fans differ from those of NFL fans in a few important ways.

The Super Bowl halftime show, known for its special guests and buzzy moments, has long been seen as a way to draw new fans to the NFL’s biggest game.

But a Jan. 25-26 survey of 2,200 U.S. adults found that fans of The Weeknd are already likely fans of the NFL: 75 percent of the singer’s fans said they were fans of the NFL, while 45 percent of NFL fans said they also favored The Weeknd. Of the adults surveyed, 29 percent said they were fans of both the NFL and The Weeknd.

Fans of the Canadian singer, born Abel Tesfaye, are intuitively more likely to watch the Super Bowl for the halftime show (24 percent) than NFL fans (14 percent), and they’re also more likely to say they’ll throw a Super Bowl party this year.

With many checking out the big game — more than 100 million people watched last year — artists have used the halftime performance to make political and social statements during polarized times in America.

D-C Radio: Brian Mitchell, JP Farley Team For Middays On The Fan

Entercom announced Washington D.C. sports media veterans Brian Mitchell and JP Finlay as new midday show co-hosts for top-rated sports station WJFK 106.7 The Fan. The duo will be heard weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. ET, effective immediately.

Mitchell is the 2nd all-time NFL leader in yardage, and is a member of the Washington Football Team Ring of Honor.

“Doing sports radio in my hometown is a dream come true,” said Finlay. “Doing it with BMitch means even more. What he has done on and off the field is remarkable, but my favorite times with Brian are usually talking sports over a few drinks, and that’s exactly the vibe we will bring to the show. Without the drinks…mostly.”

Finlay has been NBC Sports’ Washington’s Washington Football Team beat reporter since 2016, and created and hosted the popular Washington Football Talk Podcast. He will continue reporting for and appearing on NBC Sports Washington programs in addition to hosting duties at 106.7 The Fan.

NYTimes Tops 7.5M $ubs, Ads Drop

The New York Times set a record for its subscription business in 2020, a year when a pandemic, social unrest and a bitterly contested presidential race made headlines, the company said in an earnings report on Thursday.

After adding 2.3 million digital-only subscriptions in 2020, more than in any previous year, The Times exceeded 7.5 million subscriptions for its digital products and print newspaper, The New York Times Company’s fourth-quarter report said.

The largest gains of 2020 occurred during two news-heavy periods. In the quarter that started in April, when a great number of Americans were weeks into a routine of working remotely because of the coronavirus pandemic, the company added 669,000 digital subscriptions. In the fourth quarter, which included Election Day, The Times had an increase of roughly 627,000 digital subscriptions.

“In 2020, we reached two key milestones, both of which we expect to be enduring: Digital revenue overtook print for the first time, and digital subscription revenue, long our fastest-growing revenue stream, is also now our largest,” Meredith Kopit Levien, the company’s chief executive, said in a statement. “Those two milestones, and our best year on record for subscriptions, mark the end of the first decade of The Times’s transformation into a digital-first, subscription-first company.”

For the year, The Times’s primary digital offering, its news product, gained 1.7 million subscribers, a 48 percent increase over 2019. More than five million Times subscriptions are for the news product alone, The Times said. Other digital offerings, like the Cooking and Games apps, gained more than 600,000 subscriptions in 2020, a 66 percent rise, for a total of roughly 1.6 million. The remaining subscriptions — about 833,000 — are for the print newspaper.

In the fourth quarter, digital subscription revenue was $167 million, a 37 percent jump from the final months of 2019. For the year, it was $598.3 million, a 30 percent rise. Total subscription revenue in 2020 was up 10 percent, to $1.195 billion.

A downside to the quarter, and the year, were ad sales. The closings and suspensions of businesses during the pandemic took a toll across the media industry, cutting into the marketing budgets of many companies that buy ads. Total ad revenue at The Times fell 26 percent in 2020, to $392.4 million, with print ad revenue bearing the brunt of the annual decline, at 39 percent, the company said.

Wake-Up Call: Biden Wants Fast Action On COVID Relief Plan

SUGGESTS HE'S OPEN TO CHANGES:
President Biden said in a private call with House Democrats yesterday to, quote, "act fast" and "go big" on his $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief plan, but he also suggested he's open to changes, saying he's, quote, "not married" to an absolute dollar amount for the overall package, according to AP.
USAToday 2/4/21

One of those changes could be reducing the income threshold for which Americans would be eligible for a new $1,400 direct payment, something that could draw some Republican support for the package, but he insisted that there be $1,400 payment, saying, "I’m not going to start my administration by breaking a promise to the American people."

Biden would like to have bipartisan support, and talks with some Republicans continue, but he is prepared to move forward with getting the relief plan through using just the Democratic majority in Congress.

➤STUDY: ASTRAZENECA VACCINE MAY REDUCE COVID-19 TRANSMISSION: Oxford University researchers said Wednesday that AstraZeneca’s coronavirus vaccine shows some evidence it may reduce transmission of the virus and offers strong protection for three months with a single dose. The preliminary findings could bolster the U.K.'s controversial strategy of delaying the second shot for up to 12 weeks, instead of the recommended four weeks, so more people can get the first shot more quickly. It's not clear what implications the research results might have for the two vaccines being used in the U.S., from Pfizer and Moderna. It's been unclear whether the vaccines could not only prevent illness, but also stop someone transmitting the virus even if they don't get sick. Because of that uncertainty, people being vaccinated have been advised to continue to wear masks and distance from others.

U.S. Passes 450,000 Deaths: The U.S. has passed 450,000 deaths from the coronavirus, with the death toll at more than 450,700 as of early this morning, according to Johns Hopkins University's count.

➤HOUSE REPUBLICANS KEEP CHENEY IN LEADERSHIP, STAND BEHIND GREENE: House Republicans rejected an effort yesterday to punish Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming for her vote to impeach former President Donald Trump by removing her from her position as the the party's Number 3 leader in the House. The Republican lawmakers voted 145-61 in a secret ballot against her removal, an effort that was led by hardline GOP House members. Cheney said during the private session, I won't apologize for the vote."

The House Republicans also said they'd stand behind controversial freshman GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene against an effort by the Democrats to remove her from House committees in a vote set for today, and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy spoke out against the Democrats' move. Greene has faced criticism from Democrats and some Republicans, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, for her online support of racist and violent views, including "likes" for violence against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former President Barack Obama, and conspiracy theories, including questioning the reality of deadly school shootings and supporting QAnon theories. AP cited sources as saying Greene apologized to her colleagues during yesterday's meeting, but there were conflicting versions of what she said. McCarthy condemned Greene's past support of conspiracy theories, but said she'd recognized in a private conversation that she must meet a, quote, "higher standard" as a member of Congress.

➤DEFENSE SECRETARY ORDERS MILITARY LEADERS TO ADDRESS EXTREMISM IN RANKS: New Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered military leaders to speak with troops about extremism in the ranks, after it was found that current and former military members took part in the attack on the U.S. Capitol last month. A Pentagon spokesman said Austin met with the military service chiefs and secretaries yesterday and said he would order a "stand down" by all units in the next 60 days, with the operational pause to be used to discuss extremism. The spokesman said Austin, a retired U.S. Army four-star general and the nation's first Black defense secretary, wants to get a better sense of the scope of the problem in the military.

➤PROSECUTORS ASK FOR ARREST, HIGHER BOND FOR RITTENHOUSE: Wisconsin prosecutors asked a judge yesterday for a new arrest warrant and to increase bail by $200,000 for Kyle Rittenhouse, the 18-year-old charged with fatally shooting two people and injuring a third during a protest over police brutality in Kenosha last August, saying he violated his bail conditions. Prosecutors alleged that Rittenhouse failed to inform the court of his change of address within 48 hours of moving. They said they learned he was no longer living at his address when the court mailed him a notice that was returned as undeliverable, and detectives went to the location and found another person had rented the apartment. Rittenhouse’s attorney told the judge that the teen had moved to what he called an "undisclosed Safe House" because of death threats and that he offered to give prosecutors the new address in November if they'd keep it secret, but they refused. Rittenhouse claims he acted in self-defense and conservatives who've rallied around him raised the money to pay his $2 million bail. A judge ordered Rittenhouse last month not to have any contact with white supremacists after he was seen posing for photos with two men making an "OK" sign that white supremacists use as a symbol while drinking at a bar with his mother. Several men at the bar also sang a song to Rittenhouse that is the anthem of the far-right extremist group the Proud Boys.

➤COVID-19 AND SUPER BOWL PARTIES: ARE THEY WORTH THE RISK?  Super Bowl parties are an American tradition, but the pandemic is putting a damper on them this year. The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Dr. Anthony Fauci, said yesterday, “As much fun as it is to get together in a big Super Bowl party, now is not the time to do that. Every time we do have something like this, there is always a spike [in coronavirus cases], be it a holiday, Christmas, New Year’s, Thanksgiving.” The experts say a Super Bowl party means people are indoors, with masks down to eat and drink, plus there is potentially a lot of yelling and excitement—all things that make having such a party a high-risk activity. If you insist on still having a Super Bowl party, there are some ways to make it safer, including: having everyone wear masks as much as possible, having an outdoor party if you can, if you live somewhere chilly have the party in your garage if you can (and leave the door open to allow for cross-ventilation—also adding in a space heater is ok), encourage hand washing, keeping a minimum distance from people of six feet, having people bring their own food rather than sharing communal dishes, refraining from sharing hand towels, and leaving cleaning supplies out (like bleach wipes) so guests can wipe down the bathroom surfaces after they use it.

➤STUDY...GRADUALLY GAINING WEIGHT CAN EXTEND YOUR LIFESPAN:  Gaining weight slowly over time has been linked to a longer life. A new study finds that people who started adulthood at a normal weight and then slowly became overweight, but not obese, as they aged tended to live longer. The study found that people who were normal weight at age 31 and gradually moved to overweight status in middle or later adulthood had the lowest mortality risk, even compared to those who maintained a normal weight throughout adulthood. Those with the second-lowest mortality risk were those who were considered overweight but were able to maintain a stable weight, followed by those with a “lower level” of normal weight, and those who were overweight as adults but then lost weight over the years. Those who were obese in early adulthood and then gained more weight with age showed the highest mortality rate. One issue with the study is that it relied on Body Mass Index (BMI) to classify people’s weight, which one expert points out, “cannot distinguish between fat and muscle mass.” He adds, “The BMI at any given time is a snapshot in time. It’s more helpful to study the BMI profile of a person over time, say, since childhood or adolescence rather than only one point in time. People who have been obese for longer periods tend to have higher burden of disease.”

➤POLL..AMERICAN PLAN TO FOCUS MORE ON HEALTH THAN CAREER AFTER PANDEMIC: The coronavirus pandemic has caused a shift in priorities for a majority of Americans, according to a new poll that found people say they're planning to focus more on health and happiness instead of career and success after the pandemic. The OnePoll survey found that 68 percent said they're emerging from the pandemic with a new attitude, with seven in 10 saying they plan to live each day to the fullest and 71 percent saying they value the little things in life now more than ever. Among the concrete changes Americans are making, 45 percent are speaking to their families more, 43 percent are speaking their minds more truthfully, 42 percent are planning to take more vacation time when it's safe to do so, and 40 percent plan to be more confident and express themselves creatively. The poll showed two life milestones are less of a priority, with marriage down 11 percent and achieving a successful career down five percent.

🏈CHIEFS' BARBER TESTED POSITIVE FOR COVID JUST BEFORE CUTTING 20-PLUS PLAYERS' HAIR: The Kansas City Chiefs had a close call with what would have been a disastrous situation one week before the Super Bowl when a barber tested positive for the coronavirus on Sunday (January 31st) as he was cutting center Daniel Kilgore's hair and was set to cut the hair of more than 20 other players, including quarterback Patrick Mahomes, ESPN reported Wednesday. When the rapid test's positive result came back, the barber was immediately removed from the facility, without even finishing Kilgore's haircut. The same barber had cut receiver Demarcus Robinson's hair the day before, and even though the barber, Kilgore and Robinson had all been wearing masks, the two players were put on the reserve/Covid-19 list. They have to quarantine, but if they continue to test negative, they will be allowed to play in the Super Bowl.

➤'MADDEN NFL 21' SIMULATION PICKS CHIEFS TO WIN SUPER BOWL: It's that time of year again for the Super Bowl simulation prediction from EA Sports' Madden NFL franchise, and this year the Madden NFL 21 simulation has the Kansas City Chiefs beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to repeat as Super Bowl champions. The final score in the simulation was a 37-27 Chiefs' win, and it included Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes getting the go-ahead touchdown on a 12-yard fourth quarter scramble to go up 34-27. Mahomes also takes home the MVP, throwing for 422 yards and four touchdowns. Tampa Bay quarterback Tom Brady had 322 yards with three touchdowns and an interception.

🏀NBA: NO PLAYERS TESTED POSITIVE FOR COVID IN PAST WEEK: The NBA said yesterday that no additional players had tested positive for Covid-19 in the previous week, after nearly two dozen games had to be called off in the past month because of coronavirus-related issues. After 27 players were positive in results between January 6th and January 19th, only one player has been positive since. The NBA has put strict rules in place to keep the cases as low as possible.

🏈NFL SAYS CONCUSSIONS DOWN FIVE PERCENT THIS SEASON; MASKS KEY TO COVID FIGHT: The NFL said yesterday that concussions were down five percent this season, the third year in a row where there's been a reduction in concussions, about 25 percent down from previous years. NFL executive VP of communications, public affairs and policy said, "This is progress. This is not a success. We will continue to implement our concussion reduction strategy . . . " The NFL's chief medical officer, Dr. Allen Sills, also talked about the coronavirus, saying the league's data showed that masks were the, quote, "key element" in preventing transmission. He said there'd been 262 Covid cases among players and 463 cases among coaches, staff and other personnel for an overall test positivity rate from August 1st through the end of January of just 0.08 percent.

🏀FLORIDA'S KEYONTAE JOHNSON'S COLLAPSE NOT CAUSED BY COVID: The family of Florida forward Keyontae Johnson said yesterday that his scary collapse during a game two months ago wasn't, quote, "related to or a result of a previous or current" Covid-19 diagnosis. Johnson was rushed to the hospital on December 12th after falling face-first onto the court during a timeout in the first half of a game against Florida State in Tallahassee. He slowly recovered in the days that followed. Although Johnson had tested positive for Covid during the summer, the family said doctors have determined the virus didn't play a role in his collapse. Neither a diagnosis nor a cause of Johnson's collapse has been publicly disclosed. Johnson rejoined the team later in December, but hasn't played since and his family said he won't play again this season as he focuses on his recovery.
