The Smartphone Is The Center Of Gen Z Living

Edison Research Wednesday presented Media Habits of Gen Z, a study that combines survey research with in-depth interviews to better understand how individuals age 12-24 consume media and what resonates with them.

There are approximately 58 million people in the U.S. who make up the digitally native “Gen Z,” which represents 20% of the 12+ population.

One-on-one interviews about Gen Z self-perception revealed:
  • Gen Z see themselves as open minded and accepting. Respondents use words like “flexible” and “progressive” to describe themselves. They talk of living in a world filled with constant change which requires such traits. The Gen Z cohort is more ethnically diverse than any generation before it, with 53% of those age 12-24 in the U.S. identifying with a non-white ethnic group, so they are exposed to a variety of cultures and norms.
  • Gen Z carry a heavy mental load, and they are tired. They have experienced Covid, culture wars, and other major historic events at an age where they are developing and learning about the world. Many expressed the need for rest and self-care.
Findings were presented by Edison Research Vice President Megan Lazovick, and Senior Director of Research Gabriel Soto. The study was commissioned by PRPD and presented at their 2022 conference.

“Content creators and media outlets who try to reach Gen Z are wise to consider that this generation is not quick to judge or dismiss something unless they think it’s inauthentic or harmful,” said Lazovick. “They are accepting of others and have a great deal on their minds.”

Survey research shows:
  • The smartphone is the center of Gen Z living. Ninety-three percent of Gen Z own a smart phone, and Gen Z spend 57% of their daily audio time listening through a mobile phone. The one-on-one interviews yielded such quotes as, “I go to sleep when I get home at eleven. It’s like until I pass out with the phone on my chest, I am on my phone, Google searching, you know, looking at Facebook, looking at videos or anything that I didn’t get a chance to look at early in the day.”
  • Gen Z are digital natives and they consume digital audio. Almost everyone (95%) in the online Gen Z online population uses streaming video. Almost one-third (32%) watch live stream video games.
  • Gen Z spend more time with music than the overall population. Those age 13-24 in the U.S. spend 3 hours and 43 minutes daily listening to music — an average of 40 minutes more than the rest of the population. Their top genre preferences are Hip Hop/R&B, Top 40, and Alternative Rock.
According to Soto, “Smartphones have always been a part of Gen Z’s story. Gen Zers have the ability to immerse themselves in media at any time, and on-demand online audio has appealed to this generation that cares about the ability to have full control of their music.”

Report: LIV Golf Reaches Deal For U-S Telecasts

LIV Golf, the controversial Saudi-funded golf tour that launched last year and has signed stars such as Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson, finally has a television home in the United States, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Nexstar Media Group Inc. said it reached a multiyear deal with LIV Golf to broadcast the league on its CW Network, the broadcast network it acquired majority control of last year.

Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

LIV Golf Chief Executive and Commissioner Greg Norman said in a statement that the deal “will provide accessibility for our fans and maximum exposure for our athletes and partners.”

The success of the partnership will be a primary factor in determining LIV Golf’s financial viability. Since LIV Golf launched last year, Saudi Arabia’s sovereign-wealth fund has committed at least $2 billion to the rebel golf circuit, but it has lacked the main revenue drivers of major professional sports—lucrative media rights and sponsorship deals.

To lure golfers such as Mickelson, Johnson and last year’s British Open champion, Cameron Smith, LIV has offered record-breaking prize funds at its tournaments and lucrative appearance fees. By poaching players from the PGA Tour, the Saudi-backed league has created a fissure in the sport.

LIV and the PGA Tour are locked in a court battle that is growing increasingly contentious. LIV and a handful of players are suing the Tour for allegedly violating antitrust law and behaving as a monopolist to dominate the professional golf industry. The Tour has countersued, accusing LIV of interfering with its deals in its mission to take over the sport, and has suspended the players that have bolted to the Saudi-backed upstart for violating their contracts.

Amazon Music Fans Must Upgrade To Hear Music OnDemand

Many customers are discovering the hard way that Amazon has changed its options for streaming music.

The Wall Street Journal reports customers of Amazon Prime, its broad perk service, no longer can play on demand most of the songs in the company’s catalog. That feature is now limited to customers who will pay more for an “Unlimited” music tier.

Amazon said the change is part of a major upgrade to its music services. The number of songs in its catalog for Prime members jumped from two million to 100 million, but the Prime tier has become more like a radio station: You can call in a request, after which the algorithm spits out an assortment of “similar artists.”

Amazon appears to be trying to push its music streamers to the higher-cost Unlimited tier. When users click on a song they no longer can listen to on demand in the Prime tier, an ad for its Unlimited service pops up.

In a written statement, Amazon said the update was driven by feedback from customers who wanted a bigger music catalog, even if it meant a primarily “shuffle-mode” experience, and that the company will continue to update its platform based on user feedback.

Mike McKenna, 59, was blindsided by the change. Mr. McKenna, who lives near Albany, N.Y., spent years curating Amazon Music playlists. When he headed to work, he would select his car list—Kenny Chesney, Jason Aldean and other country songs.

Recently, the app began playing a rock song he had never heard. When he got to the office, he tried to click on a Kenny Chesney song in his playlist, but it didn’t work. Songs he didn’t recognize kept playingc

He googled the change over and over, then tried it again. Still no luck. “It finally hit me,” he said. He stopped using the service.

Amazon Music has been the fastest-growing competitor to Spotify and Apple Music. But its share of the music subscription market decreased from 21% in January 2022 to 17% in November, the month that Amazon introduced the updates, according to data tracker Antenna.

Wake-Up Call: Biden To Visit Storm Ravaged Cali

President Joe Biden is set to tour damage and be briefed on recovery efforts after devastating storms hit California in recent weeks, killing at least 20 people and causing destruction across 41 of the state’s 58 counties. The president, accompanied by FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell, Gov. Gavin Newsom and other state and local officials, will visit Thursday the storm-damaged Capitola Pier in Santa Cruz County, where he will meet with business owners and affected residents. Biden will also meet with first responders and deliver remarks on supporting the state’s recovery at nearby Seacliff State Park. “Over 500 FEMA and other federal personnel have already deployed to California to support response and recovery operations and are working side by side with the state to ensure all needs are indeed met on the ground,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Wednesday.

➤CHINA STRUGGLES WITH COVID FIGHT: Chinese leader Xi Jinping called for greater efforts to fight Covid in a pre-holiday video call with people in rural areas, breaking with precedent by holding the event virtually instead of making an in-person visit.  Xi said the current outbreak has been “fierce” and China still faced tough tasks, state broadcaster China Central Television reported late Wednesday. The country’s Covid fight required perseverance as “dawn is just ahead,” he said. The president said he was especially worried about epidemic control in rural areas. Xi called on local authorities in the countryside to improve medical care and protect people’s health to the greatest extent possible.

➤CONSERVATIVE WING GAINS POWER IN HOUSE: Some of former President Donald Trump’s most deeply committed allies have gained power in the House of Representatives. They’ve been named to high-profile committees, notably the Oversight and Accountability Committee, the main investigative arm of the House. The committee’s new members include Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, Paul Gosar of Arizona, Lauren Boebert of Colorado and Scott Perry of Pennsylvania.

➤POLL SHOWS TRUMP BEATING DeSANTIS: Former President Trump holds at 17-point lead over Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) in a hypothetical GOP primary match-up, according to a new poll. A Morning Consult poll released Wednesday showed Trump with 48 percent support among potential Republican primary voters, followed by DeSantis with 31 percent. Trump’s front-runner position differs from some polls since the November midterm elections, which have shown DeSantis closing the gap with Trump or taking a lead in some cases.

➤FLORIDA GOVERNOR SEEKS TO BAN COVID MANDATES: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has asked the state legislature to make permanent penalties he has imposed on companies that require their employees to get the Covid-19 vaccination. If the ban is extended, Florida will be the only state to threaten businesses with fines if they require their employees to get inoculated. DeSantis also wants a permanent ban on mask requirements in schools and government offices.

Apple To Expand Smart-Home Devices

Apple Inc. is working on a slate of devices aimed at challenging Amazon.com Inc. and Google in the smart-home market, including new displays and a faster TV set-top box, after relaunching its larger HomePod speaker.

Bloomberg report the push into smart displays will start with a tablet product — essentially a low-end iPad — that can control things like thermostats and lights, show video and handle FaceTime chats, people with knowledge of the plans said. The product could be mounted on walls or elsewhere using magnetic fasteners, positioning it as more of a home gadget than a regular iPad.

Apple has also discussed the idea of building larger smart-home displays, according to the people, who asked not to be identified because the deliberations are private.

DirecTV To Shed More Than 200 Managers

Pioneering satellite TV provider DirecTV is making significant cuts to its workforce.

The L-A Times reports  the company, which has been struggling with subscriber losses, alerted employees earlier this month that it was cutting 10% of its management staff — or more than 200 workers. The company employs fewer than 10,000 employees and less than half of those are managers, according to people familiar with the downsizing.

The move comes amid an increasingly challenging landscape for pay-TV providers as programming costs soar and traditional customers scale back.

“The entire pay-TV industry is impacted by the secular decline and the increasing rates to secure and distribute programming,” a DirecTV spokesperson said in a statement. “We’re adjusting our operations costs to align with these changes and will continue to invest in new entertainment products and service enhancements.”

DirecTV has been a private company since mid-2021.

There's Already Talk About The Presidential Debates

The Republican National Committee has asked several major TV networks — including CNN, a regular Republican boogeyman — to consider sponsoring debates, an early sign that the party is making plans for a contested presidential primary.

The NY Times reports the debates would probably begin this summer, and Republicans are casting a wide net: Party officials are also in talks with executives from ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox News, along with more-niche networks like Newsmax and NewsNation, according to several people who requested anonymity to describe discussions intended to be private. Political debates are highly prized in the TV news industry, and the networks are expected to present proposals next month.

“Our goal is to have incredibly successful debates that allow Republican primary voters to see, without any kind of bias, a full picture of what these candidates stand for,” David Bossie, the chairman of the party’s presidential debates committee, said in an interview.

Their “radio factory” produced as many as 125 series, 61 of them soap operas.

➦In 1908...comic singer Ish Kabibble was born Merwyn Bogue in rural Pennsylvania.  He sang and played trumpet with Kay Kyser’s Kollege of Musical Knowledge on radio & record in the 30’s and 40’s. His dim witted characterization was said to be a later inspiration for Jerry Lewis. He died June 5, 1994 at age 86.

➦In 1922..Radio, TV Actor Guy Madison born Robert Ozell Moseley( Died at age 74 – February 6, 1996) was an American film, television, and radio actor. He is best known for playing Wild Bill Hickok in the Western television series The Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok from 1951 to 1958.  During his career, Madison was given a special Golden Globe Award in 1954 and two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.

George Klein
➦In 1923...WMC 790 AM in Memphis, Tennessee signed-on. WMC was first owned by The Memphis Commercial Appeal and its call letters reflect the M and C from its owner's initials. In the 1930s, WMC carried the NBC Radio Red Network, while rival WMPS, owned by the Memphis Press-Scimitar, aired the NBC Blue Network. Starting in the 1930s, the station used a riverboat whistle as its sounder, a nod to Memphis' location on the Mississippi River—a practice that continued well into the 1990s.  The station currently airs ESPN and Fox Sports Radio.

In addition to sports talk shows, WMC-AM features longtime Memphis disc jockey George Klein's weekly tribute program to Elvis Presley. Klein and Presley were close friends and confidantes during the latter's lifetime and the former's long stint on WHBQ-AM.

Now, airing sports the license is currently held by Audacy Inc, which it purchased from CBS in September 2006.

➦In 1927...KGRC-AM (now KONO) San Antonio signed-on. KONO is the fourth-oldest radio station in San Antonio, officially signing on in January 1927. KONO began as a hobby for Eugene Roth in a room over his garage in downtown San Antonio. As the broadcasting industry grew, Eugene Roth's son, Jack Roth, began working with his dad, later inheriting the station. At first, KONO was powered at only 100 watts, broadcasting on 1370 kilocycles and having to share time on the air with other stations. It later moved to AM 1400 before relocating to its current home on AM 860.

In February 1947, an FM station was added, KONO-FM at 92.9 MHz.  The FM station later took the call sign KITY. Eugene Roth served as the president of Mission Broadcasting while Jack was the station's general manager.

In the 1950s, KONO's format was country & western music. In 1957, Mission Broadcasting put Channel 12 KONO-TV (now KSAT-TV) on the air. It was San Antonio's third television station, an ABC Network affiliate.

In the 1960s and 70s, KONO, "The Big 86," was one of the leading Top 40 stations in San Antonio. Some of the on air personnel were Howard Edwards, Don Couser, Woody Roberts, Skinny Don Green, Lee 'Baby' Simms, Dave Mitchell, Johnny Shannon, Charlie Scott, Nick St John and Frank Jolley. KONO won national awards in the 60s for its popularity and creativity. In 1965, Bob Pearson and Howard Edwards were selected as two of the top radio personalities in the country. KONO and its sister station KITY, would remain at 317 Arden Grove, attached to the KSAT 12 building, until the early 1990s, when they moved to a location on NE Loop 410.

In the 1970s, KONO and 550 KTSA battled in the Top 40 format. Although KONO's more recurrent-based style frequently played second-fiddle to the more current-oriented KTSA, it continued to do well. The two stations provided a nice 1-2 punch that made WOAI regret its brief flirtation with the top-40 format in the mid-'70s

KONO began the 1980s with the same recurrent-heavy Top 40 format it had in the 1970s but with a softer sound than before. KONO's days as a true contemporary hits station were numbered, as AM Top 40 stations were rapidly losing audience to FM upstarts. KONO began to evolve to a gold-based Adult Contemporary sound while its Top 40 format on KONO-FM replaced the AC format on sister 92.9 KITY.

Today, KONO AM / FM are owned by Cox Media Group.  860 AM airs a 60s & 70s oldies format, while KONO-FM usually leads the market with its Classic Hits format.

➦In 1943...the FCC endorsed Restricted Radio Operator Permits.

➦In 1998...Rockabilly singer Carl Perkins died. He was 65.

➦In 2000...Actress Hedy Lamarr died in Casselberry FL (Born - November 9, 1914). She was also an inventor who was posthumously inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
