CNN Fires 3 Non-Vaxxed Workers

CNN has reportedly fired three employees for showing up to work without having been vaccinated against COVID-19 in violation of the network's strict policy, with social media users quickly accusing the company of rank hypocrisy.

The Daily Mail reports NY Times media correspondent Michael Grynbaum first reported on the news after obtaining a copy of an internal memo that was sent on Thursday to employees by CNN President Jeff Zucker.

It is unclear where the trio of dismissed staffers worked. CNN is headquartered in Atlanta and has 16 office locations across seven countries.

According to the memo, CNN so far has had an 'honor system' in place when it comes to staffers' vaccination statuses and has not made it mandatory to produce a vaccine card.

Jeff Zucker
'In the past week, we have been made aware of three employees who were coming to the office unvaccinated,' Zucker wrote. 'All three have been terminated. Let me be clear -- we have zero-tolerance policy on this.'

Zucker stressed that all CNN employees, including those working in the office and in the field, must be vaccinated.

Critics on Twitter wasted no time pointing out that while CNN was quick to fire workers for being unvaccinated, it has not taken host Chris Cuomo off the air, despite this week's damning report by New York Attorney General Letitia James, which alleged that the presenter advised his brother, New York Gov Andrew Cuomo, on his response to allegations of sexual harassment.

The CNN prime-time personality testified to investigators looking into his older brother’s behavior. His name appears four times in the 165-page report.

Cuomo has not addressed the report accusing his brother of sexually harassing 11 women inside and outside New York government in his nightly show.

Other commenters also brought up the fact that CNN in June rehired Jeffrey Toobin as a legal analyst after he was caught masturbating on a Zoom call with former colleagues at The New Yorker.

Report: 'Jeopardy' Host Frontrunner Has Lawsuit History

Fans have shared their outage that Jeopardy! executive producer Mike Richards is being considered as the new host - despite his murky past of harassment and discrimination allegations.

Richards, 46, has served as the show's executive producer for since 2020, and was among the show's rotating cast of guest hosts after longtime 'Jeopardy!' king Alex Trebek died in November after a long-fought battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 80 years old.

According to Variety, which broke the news that Richards' is the front-runner for the hosting gig, Sony Pictures Television executives were impressed by his 'command of the fast-paced game and easy on-air manner' when he guest hosted in late February.

But fans, who have been backing Star Trek star LeVar Burton as the next host, were furious with the choice - with many bringing up Richards involvement in two harassment lawsuits, brought by two former models at The Price is Right while he was a producer there. Brandi Cochran sued his company, FremantleMedia North America and The Price is Right Productions in 2010 over claims producers sidelined and harassed her after she became pregnant.

Two former models at The Price is Right, Lanisha Cole (bottom right), and Brandi Sherwood (top right) filed harassment lawsuits that named Richards

News Corp Reports 30 Percent Jump In Revenue

News Corp reported a 30% increase in revenue for the June quarter, fueled by gains in its digital real-estate, book-publishing and Dow Jones units, reports WSJ.

The New York-based media company, whose holdings include The Wall Street Journal and the HarperCollins publishing division, narrowed its net loss to $14 million, or 2 cents a share, from the year-earlier $397 million, or 67 cents a share. Revenue grew to $2.49 billion from $1.92 billion.

The company’s news-media businesses showed strong growth in advertising sales, as the easing of the pandemic led marketers to increase their spending.

Revenue at the Dow Jones unit increased 18% to $449 million, driven by gains in advertising revenue and circulation and subscription revenue, as well as the company’s acquisition of Investor’s Business Daily. Advertising revenue increased 45%, with strong performance in both the digital and print businesses.

The company said digital-only subscriptions to Dow Jones’s consumer products grew 26%. The Wall Street Journal had more than 2.7 million average digital-only subscribers in the quarter, compared with 2.63 million in the March quarter. Total average subscriptions to Dow Jones consumer products reached about 4.5 million, the company said.

The digital real-estate unit surged, with revenue jumping 74%, driven by gains at Move and REA Group and currency fluctuations. The subscription video unit, home to the company’s majority interest in the Foxtel pay-TV service in Australia, was also boosted by currency moves, as well as higher streaming revenue.

The book-publishing unit was helped by higher frontlist and backlist sales, including the “Bridgerton” series and “The Women of the Bible Speak.” Revenue was up 21% from a year ago, to $493 million.

Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization across News Corp’s units rose 8% in the quarter.

The ads would proclaim, "Cousin Brucie's Days Are Numbered", and they issued thousands of small tombstone-shaped paperweights which said, "Cousin Brucie is going to be buried by Wolfman Jack".

After less than a year, WNBC hired Cousin Brucie, and Wolfman Jack went back to California to concentrate on his syndicated radio show.

Harry Reasoner
He served in the Army during World War II and after the war, he then resumed his journalism career with The Minneapolis Times.  After going into radio with CBS in 1948, Reasoner worked for the United States Information Agency in the Philippines. When he returned to the US, he went into television and worked at station KEYD (later KMSP) in Minneapolis. Reasoner later joined CBS News in New York, in 1956, where he eventually hosted a morning news program called Calendar from 1961 to 1963, on top of doing commentator and special news narration duties.

In 1968, Reasoner teamed up with Mike Wallace to launch 60 Minutes, a new newsmagazine series. On 60 Minutes and elsewhere, he often worked with producer and writer Andy Rooney, who later became a well-known contributor in his own right.

In 1970, Reasoner was hired away from CBS by ABC to become an anchor on the network's newly revamped nightly newscast. At the time of his hire, the network's New York-based broadcast, ABC News, was anchored by Howard K. Smith and Frank Reynolds, both former colleagues of Reasoner at CBS. Beginning in December 1970, Reasoner was moved into Reynolds' position and the newscast became known as ABC Evening News.

Reasoner anchored the news alongside Smith until 1975, when he took the sole anchor position while Smith moved into a commentary role. The next year, however, ABC decided to pair Reasoner with a new co-anchor, former Today Show co-host Barbara Walters; ABC had gone to great lengths to hire her away from NBC. Walters and Reasoner did not enjoy a close relationship; Reasoner did not like sharing the spotlight with a co-anchor and also was uncomfortable with Walters' celebrity status.

➦In 1998…Sportscaster John Beasley "Jack" Brickhouse died of heart failure at age 82 (Born - January 24, 1916). Brickhouse served as the organization's Secretary/Treasurer and was a member of its board of directors.

He began his long broadcasting career when only eighteen, at Peoria radio station WMBD in 1934. Chicago radio station WGN hired him in 1940 to broadcast Cubs and White Sox games, largely on the recommendation of their top announcer, Bob Elson. ➦In 2012...R. Peter Straus died at age 89 (Born February 15, 1923). He was a media proprietor and was president of WMCA 570 AM, and chairman of Straus News, a publisher of newspapers in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He was the director of Voice of America from 1977 to 1979.

Straus, who took over WMCA in the late 1950s and turned it into one of the nation’s most innovative radio stations, broadcasting what are regarded as the first radio editorials and political endorsements and helping to popularize rock ’n’ roll.

The son of a radio entrepreneur and the scion of a family steeped in public service, Straus counted diplomats, cabinet officials, legislators and philanthropists among his forebears. He became a United Nations official, director of the Voice of America and administrator of American aid to Africa.

WMCA pioneered public service radio in New York. It was the first station in the country to run editorials on political and civic issues, with Mr. Straus himself reading opinions on the air, and the first to endorse a presidential candidate, backing John F. Kennedy in 1960.
In December 1963, “I Want to Hold Your Hand” wailed out over WMCA, and Beatlemania, with a big boost from the station, soon engulfed the region. It was hardly a surprise. WMCA had been playing rock ’n’ roll since the 1950s, and WMCA’s Top 40 format, along with that of its fierce rival WABC, dominated the New York airwaves through the 1960s. WMCA’s disc jockeys, known as the Good Guys, became almost as well known as the stars whose records they played.

After Straus converted the station to an all-talk format in 1970, WMCA was known for years as a forum for liberal causes. It was the first station to call for the resignation of President Richard M. Nixon in the Watergate scandal, the first to ban cigarette advertising and the first to accept ads from abortion rights advocates and makers of contraceptives.

It broadcast “Call for Action” programs featuring an ombudsman to help listeners who had problems with government agencies, corporations and landlords, and “Crime Stoppers,” to help the police solve crimes.

Nielsen 'Wearables' Are On The Way

Nielsen today announced that starting in September 2021, it will begin placing approximately 3,000 new Portable People Meter (PPM) Wearables in a subset of its nearly 60,000 active PPM panelists. The deployment of PPM wearable devices and technologies is part of Nielsen's continued efforts to modernize its panels and improve the panelist experience, drive broader adoption among existing and new panelists and increase engagement among more challenging demographics.

The PPM is currently used to underpin Audio, Local TV and National audience measurement. It is used to measure both in-home and out of home tuning for Audio and Local TV and out-of-home tuning for Nielsen's National TV estimates. The next-gen wearable PPM metering will serve as foundational support for Nielsen ONE, a cross-media solution that will deliver a single, deduplicated metric for total media consumption across TV, Digital and Audio.

PPM Wearables feature an updated design that is smaller and more aligned with current wearable technology trends. The new PPM Wearable comes in a variety of ways to wear including wristbands, clips and pendants, which are more appealing among demographics that typically have lower compliance. In addition, a new companion app will help improve communication, encourage participation and enable data transmission when the device is outside the home. The companion app will also allow Nielsen to add new features and capabilities and adapt more seamlessly to new data and technology trends.

"By modernizing our panels with the PPM Wearable, we are not only improving the overall panelist experience and increasing engagement, but also ensuring our measurement is durable and can adapt to evolving technology changes," said Mainak Mazumdar, Nielsen's Chief Research and Data Officer. "This is another example of how Nielsen is continuing to innovate in our march towards Nielsen ONE in order to create a better media future for the entire industry."

Nielsen plans to share top line findings in Q2 2022 of this subset of panelists phase, with the full rollout of PPM Wearables in new panel households planned for the second half of 2022. PPM Wearables have been through a series of rigorous tests and the system has performed very well in each phase. These tests included lab, focus groups, and dual-carry testing that measure how the wearables detect codes versus the current PPM among the same panelists.

PPM Wearables are part of Nielsen's ongoing commitment to innovation that enhances the quality of our panels and makes cross-platform measurement a reality in an increasingly fragmented media landscape.

ViacomCBS Adds 6.5M Streaming Subscribers

ViacomCBS outdid Wall Street’s expectations for the second quarter of 2021, though it was an awfully close one in earnings, reports The Wrap.

Wall Street forecast earnings per share (EPS) of 96 cents on $6.48 billion in revenue, according to a consensus estimate of media analysts compiled by Yahoo Finance. ViacomCBS reported adjusted diluted EPS of 97 cents on $6.564 billion in revenue.

While the revenue figure was up 8%, EPS decreased 20% year over year on soaring expenses for Paramount+. “South Park” licensing from March to June of last year also helped that quarter’s earnings number.

Bob Bakish
The return of sports in the form of the final March Madness rounds and professional golf helped out a bunch vs. last year’s giant hole. “A Quiet Place Part II” improved the theatrical bucket from the first full COVID quarter in 2020 — but the overall improvement for the film segment was slight. While the theatrical business was basically nonexistent last year, it still wasn’t close to firing on all cylinders this spring.

Advertising revenue at both broadcast and cable rose 24% from the comparable quarter last year. Ad sales at streaming services Pluto TV and Paramount+ more than doubled. Combined with a big lift in subscriptions, streaming revenue overall jumped 92%.

All told, CBS’ revenue rose 23% to $2.809 billion. At the cable networks, the increase was 8% to $3.475 billion. Filmed entertainment ticked up 3% to $667 million.

ViacomCBS said this morning it had 42 million paid global streaming subscribers, combining Paramount+ (formerly CBS All Access) and Showtime OTT. That’s +6 million, and it does not count the free Pluto TV.

“In a quarter of strong business performance, including growth in advertising and affiliate, streaming was a standout,” President and CEO Bob Bakish said in a statement accompanying the financials.

“We continued to accelerate our global streaming momentum and delivered phenomenal results across our flagship streaming services. For the second consecutive quarter, Paramount+ fueled more than 6 million additions to our global streaming subscription base, which now reaches over 42 million. This growth was driven by the power of the service’s differentiated content strategy and expanding content slate. Looking ahead, we’re excited about our opportunity to build on this momentum, as we scale Paramount+’s content offerings across genres and expand our reach with global audiences.”

Wake-Up Call: NY Gov Cuomo Facing Impeachment

New York Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo has said he's not resigning after the results of an investigation announced Tuesday found that he sexually harassed 11 woman. So now he's facing an impeachment threat, and according to an Associated Press count Wednesday, a majority of New York State Assembly members support beginning impeachment hearings if Cuomo doesn't step down, 86 of the 150 members. Among the many state and national Democratic leaders calling for Cuomo to resign is New York Democratic Party chairperson Jay Jacobs, who's been one of his closest allies. Jacobs told Spectrum News he's tried persuading Cuomo to step down, but, quote, "wasn’t making headway." Meanwhile, district attorneys in Manhattan, Westchester and Nassau counties and the capital of Albany have asked for investigative materials from the inquiry, meaning Cuomo could be facing legal jeopardy.

➤DEFENSE SECRETARY TO ANNOUNCE MANDATORY VACCINE FOR MILITARY: Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is expected to announce a mandatory vaccine policy Friday for active-duty military forces, the New York Times first reported Wednesday. Just under two-thirds -- 64 percent -- of active-duty forces are already fully vaccinated.

➤LANDLORDS, REAL ESTATE COMPANIES CHALLENGE EVICTION MORATORIUM IN COURT: One day after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention extended the pandemic eviction moratorium after it expired over the weekend, a group of landlords and real estate companies yesterday asked a federal judge to suspend it. The new moratorium applies to areas with high or substantial Covid-19 transmission, which covers 90 percent of the population who are renters. The legal challenge says the moratorium amounts to an extension of the, quote, "same unlawful ban," and says the CDC acted to "relieve political pressure" on the White House and to buy more time with delays in litigation challenging the extension. President Biden himself said Tuesday that extension may not pass legal muster.

➤AT LEAST 10 KILLED IN CRASH OF VAN PACKED WITH MIGRANTS: At least 10 people were killed and 20 others injured, all of them seriously to critically, in a crash of a van in South Texas yesterday afternoon that was packed with 29 people believed to be migrants. Sergeant Nathan Brandley of the Texas Department of Public Safety said the van, which was designed to hold 15 passengers, was speeding on a remote highway and the driver lost control as he tried to veer off onto another road. The van wasn't being chased.

➤IT LOOKS LIKE NEW 'JEOPARDY' HOST WILL BE SHOWS' EXECUTIVE PRODUCER:  After all the celebrities who've had guest hosting stints on Jeopardy! since the death of longtime host Alex Trebek last November, it looks like the new host is going to be someone largely unknown until his own guest hosting stint, the show's executive producer Mike Richards. Variety reported that Richards is in advanced negotiations for the job, while Deadline said an announcement is expected in the next few days. Richards has produced other game shows, including The Price Is Right, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, and Let's Make a Deal, and actually has hosting experience, including for the game shows Divided and The Pyramid and reality shows including High School Reunion and Beauty and the Geek. According to reports, execs were impressed by Richards' command of the game and his on-air personality. Others who've reportedly been at the top of the list were Big Bang Theory actress Mayim Bialik and former Jeopardy! contestant Buzzy Cohen. As for who the show's fans want, a recent New York Post poll had all-time great contestant Ken Jennings in first place, but Richards was second -- so a lot of fans liked what they saw with him too.

➤STUDY..WOMEN BECOME MORE SATISFIED WITH THEIR FIGURES FROM AGE 60 ONWARDS:  It seems women actually get more satisfied with their bodies as they age. Researchers in New Zealand assessed the body satisfaction of about 15,000 adults over the course of six years. They found body satisfaction increased over time for both men and women, and that women specifically started to love their body around the age of 60, while men started to love their bodies between the ages of 59 and 64. It’s thought that the newfound appreciation for how we look is due to health becoming more important than physical appearance. Researchers add that for women, pregnancy and postpartum periods of time that typically lead to physiological changes that can negatively affect body images, as these times are “inconsistent with rigid beauty ideals.” But they also found that body dissatisfaction is likely less severe now than it was several generations ago.

➤BILL GATES SAYS RELATIONSHIP WITH JEFFREY EPSTEIN WAS 'HUGE MISTAKE': Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said in a CNN interview last night (August 4th) that his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein was a "huge mistake." The multimillionaire financier was convicted of sex crimes and fatally hung himself in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges involving underage girls. According to a 2019 New York Times report, the relationship between Gates and Epstein began in 2011, after Epstein had already been convicted of sex crimes. Gates told CNN's Anderson Cooper, "I had several dinners with him, hoping that what he said about getting billions of philanthropy for global health, through contacts that he had, might emerge. When it looked like that wasn’t a real thing, that relationship ended. But it was a huge mistake to spend time with him, to give him the credibility of being there." The Gates Foundation is one of the largest private charitable foundations in the world.

➤FORECAST UPDATED FOR BUSIER HURRICANE SEASON: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) yesterday updated its outlook for the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season and predicted it will be busier than what they forecasted in May. The NOAA is now predicting there will be 15 to 21 named storms instead of the 13 to 20 in its May forecast, and the number of hurricanes will be seven to 10 instead of six to 10. It said the chance for an above average hurricane season increased from 60 percent to 65 percent. Hurricane season, which began June 1st, runs through the end of November, with its peak from mid-August to mid-October.

➤OBAMA'S 60TH BIRTHDAY WILL NOW JUST BE FOR FAMILY AND CLOSE FRIENDS: The plans for a big 60th birthday celebration for former President Barack Obama with hundreds of guests has been called off because of the coronavirus surge due to the delta variant, and now only family and close friends will attend. The bash was set to be held at the Obamas' oceanfront Martha's Vineyard home. Guests were requested to be vaccinated and were to be tested, and the party was to be held outdoors. Obama spokesperson Hannah Hankins said in a statement, "This outdoor event was planned months ago in accordance with all public health guidelines and with Covid safeguards in place. Due to the new spread of the delta variant over the past week, the President and Mrs. Obama have decided to significantly scale back the event to include only family and close friends."

➤THE HOTTEST KIND OF MAN YOU CAN BE RIGHT NOW IS A ‘SUBMISSIVE’ AND ‘BREEDABLE’ ONE:  The internet has declared that the hottest men are those who are “submissive and breedable.” Users on Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram are using the phrase to compliment men (often cis-men) they find attractive, and it’s happening so often that men are now co-opting the phrase to describe themselves. The phrase originated on a “copypasta” that circulated on TikTok back in March, but sex coach Gigi Engle says, “Saying someone looks ‘submissive and breedable’ is a bit of a subversive take on the reclamation of female sexual domination.” She adds that the phrase is "part of a sub/dom roleplay at its roots.” She also adds, “It’s submissive language that subverts misogynistic language that’s been geared towards cis-women in the past, now towards a cis-male person (or any male person, really.) […] Also, women aren’t ‘supposed’ to say such objectifying things—we’re meant to look pretty and be objectified, so I’d say there’s a lot of power grabbing in that respect as well.” Still, there are some concerns from other experts about misuse of the phrase—including weaponizing it for sexual harassment. But overall, it’s currently being used in a playful, lighthearted way to degrade oneself or a man one finds attractive.

Vaxx Skepticism Drops Most Among CNN, FOX News Viewers

  • The share of Fox News viewers who said they probably or definitely won’t get vaccinated fell to 27% this week, an all-time low in Morning Consult tracking.
  • 19% of adults said they won’t get a COVID-19 shot, while 11% said they aren’t sure if they’ll get vaccinated in the future.

In recent weeks, as the country faces another COVID-19 surge that threatens to stunt the pandemic recovery, some conservative media personalities have gone all in on vaccines.

Sean Hannity, one of the highest-profile Fox News hosts, told his audience he believes “in the science of vaccination.” Steve Doocy, co-host of the right-leaning Fox & Friends morning show, told viewers the shot “will save your life.” And Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who’s running for governor of Arkansas after a stint as a Fox News contributor and White House press secretary under former President Donald Trump, penned an op-ed last week encouraging people to consider getting the “Trump vaccine.”

It’s a marked shift in tone for Fox News, given the channel’s segments have repeatedly questioned the severity of the pandemic and raised doubts about the safety of COVID-19 vaccines. New Morning Consult polling suggests the change may be making an impression.

While overall vaccine skepticism has barely budged in months, reluctance fell to an all-time low this week among adults who watch Fox News: 27 percent of viewers now say they probably or definitely won’t get vaccinated, down from 30 percent the week before and a high of 37 percent in mid-March.

When it comes to people’s attitudes around vaccines, their media diet matters, and Fox News is far from the only influential platform. Among a group of 15 news channels, newspapers and social media platforms, Snapchat users are the most likely to say they don’t plan to get vaccinated, at 35 percent, followed by Instagram users, at 31 percent, and Reddit and Facebook users, each at 30 percent.
