YouTube Scrubs Florida Governor Video

Ron DeSantis
YouTube has deleted a video in which Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and a handful of medical experts questioned the effectiveness of having children wear masks to stop the spread of COVID-19, The Wrap reports.

The video, which was removed on Wednesday, was of a recent roundtable discussion DeSantis moderated on the global response to the pandemic. DeSantis was joined by Oxford epidemiologist Dr. Sunetra Gupta, Harvard professor Dr. Martin Kulldorff, and Dr. Scott Atlas and Dr. Jay Bhattacharya from Stanford University. The clip was posted by the American Institute for Economic Research, and a transcript of the discussion can be found on the group’s website by clicking here.

A YouTube rep confirmed on Thursday the video was removed due to multiple instances where the doctors said children didn’t need to wear masks. This position, a YouTube rep said, violated the Google-owned video site’s “COVID-19 medical misinformation” policies, which you can find here.

“YouTube has clear policies around COVID-19 medical misinformation to support the health and safety of our users,” a rep said in a statement. “We removed AIER’s video because it included content that contradicts the consensus of local and global health authorities regarding the efficacy of masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We allow videos that otherwise violate our policies to remain on the platform if they contain sufficient educational, documentary, scientific, or artistic context. Our policies apply to everyone, and focus on content regardless of the speaker or channel.”

Here are a few exchanges that caught the attention of YouTube’s censors:

  • DeSantis at one point in the video asked if it was necessary for kids to wear masks in school. Dr. Kulldorff in response said “children should not wear face masks, no. They don’t need it for their own protection and they don’t need it for protecting other people, either.”
  • Dr. Bhattacharya said it is “developmentally inappropriate” for children to wear masks and that it “just doesn’t help on the disease spread.” He added: “I think it’s absolutely not the right thing to do… if we went back a year, a lot of experts would say that wearing masks for the general public is not evidence-based.”
  • Dr. Atlas later said “there’s no scientific rationale or logic to have children wear masks in schools.”

The World Health Organization’s guidance on masks says children 5 and under don’t need to wear masks; children between the ages of 6 and 11, the WHO said, should wear masks when they’re in areas of “widespread transmission,” and kids 12 and up “should wear a mask under the same conditions as adults,” like when they’re within 1 meter of the person they’re talking to and indoors.

Poynter Institute Scolds ’60 Minutes’

The Poynter Institute for Media Studies has joined the growing chorus of criticism against the controversial "60 Minutes" report that suggested Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, R., engaged in a pay-for-play scheme with Publix over distributing coronavirus vaccines, reports FOX News.

"There was really no there there," Poynter’s senior media writer Tom Jones wrote.

"’60 Minutes’ is the finest and most respected investigative journalism show in the history of television … that doesn’t mean it’s infallible," Jones wrote. "And a sloppy moment on Sunday’s show is raising serious concerns."

The report by Sharyn Alfonsi and produced by Oriana Zill de Granados suggested DeSantis gave Publix preferential treatment to distribute COVID-19 vaccines because the chain donated $100,000 to the governor’s political action committee.

"If that is true — if DeSantis ran a ‘pay-for-play’ scheme involving vaccinations for the coronavirus — that’s an explosive story. But ‘60 Minutes’ really didn’t deliver substantial evidence that DeSantis did any such thing," Jones wrote.

"Yes, Publix donated to DeSantis’ reelection campaign. But that is neither illegal nor unusual. Big companies often donate to political campaigns of both major parties," Jones continued. "Yet the ‘60 Minutes’ piece used that as the main evidence for its premise that DeSantis did something shady. They really didn’t have much else on that topic."

Democratic state officials, conservative pundits, Publix, DeSantis himself and now liberal media watchdogs have all rejected the story.

"There’s nothing wrong with a news network digging into how vaccines are distributed. And political contributions are a good place to poke around on such a story. But, in this case, it doesn’t appear as if DeSantis did anything wrong," Jones wrote. "If he did, ‘60 Minutes’ failed to provide enough information, context or evidence that he did … This doesn’t ruin the ‘60 Minutes’ brand, but this was not one of the show’s finer moments."

Despite the widespread backlash, CBS News has defended its reporting.

When asked why a defense of pay-for-play allegations from the "60 Minutes" report wasn’t in the statement, a CBS News spokesperson told Fox News the newsmagazine repeated claims already made in Florida newspapers and declined additional comment.

Taylor Swift Drops New ‘Fearless’ Album

Taylor Swift is striking back: the superstar on Thursday night released a rerecording of her 2008 album “Fearless,” the first salvo of a campaign to reclaim her back catalog and gain more control over her legacy, reports The Wall Street Journal.

Two years after failing to acquire the rights to her early albums from her former label, Big Machine Label Group, the 31-year-old pop star is attempting to effectively replace those albums in the minds of consumers with new versions whose rights she owns. On Thursday, Swift enlisted the help of two of her “kids”—Olivia Rodrigo and Conan Gray, rising music stars who are both huge fans—to help promote the remake.

“They are so cute it physically hurts me,” Swift said on Twitter.

The 27-track “Fearless (Taylor’s Version)” album follows her third album-of-the-year win at the Grammy Awards last month and weeks of promotional teases, including the release of never-before-heard tracks from the “Fearless” era including “You All Over Me” and “Mr. Perfectly Fine.”

Swift’s plan to rerecord her early albums could devalue the earning potential of the old versions by encouraging fans, advertisers and other users to listen to or license the new tracks. In addition to boosting her streaming income and sales, her move bestows more control: if she wants to license a “Fearless”-era song for use in a commercial or movie, for example, she can ink the deal herself, cutting out the owner of the original version.

“It’s going to be fun,” Ms. Swift told Billboard in 2019, of rerecording her albums. “Because it’ll feel like regaining a freedom and taking back what’s mine.”

“Fearless” is actually the second album in Ms. Swift’s catalog—not her debut, which was 2006’s “Taylor Swift.” However, it was her first No. 1 album on the all-genre Billboard album-sales chart, won album of the year at the Grammys and remains among her most liked and critically-acclaimed records. If the Pennsylvania-born singer-songwriter follows through, it will be the first of six rerecorded albums.

‘Diddy’ Slams GM For Not Supporting Black-Owned Media

Musician and entrepreneur Sean “Diddy” Combs criticized General Motors Co. and other companies for failing to support Black-owned media, saying Corporate America could no longer “manipulate our community into believing that incremental progress is acceptable.”

Bloomberg reports the rapper, who founded the Revolt cable network in 2013, posted an open letter on that company’s website Thursday calling out companies for spending less than 1% of their advertising on Black-owned media.

Sean 'Diddy' Combs
He singled out General Motors because it recently cited Revolt as a company it supports. “While Revolt does receive advertising revenue from GM, our relationship is not an example of success. Instead, Revolt, just like other Black-owned media companies, fights for crumbs while GM makes billions of dollars every year from the Black community,” he said.

“Corporations like General Motors have exploited our culture, undermined our power, and excluded Black entrepreneurs from participating in the value created by Black consumers,” said Combs, who first rose to fame in the 1990s as a hip-hop artist and record producer.

In response, GM said that the company is currently meeting with Black-owned media enterprises as the automaker works on its plan to spend more with those properties. Chief Executive Officer Mary Barra will be in some of those meetings. Company spokesman Pat Morrissey said that for this year, GM doubled its spending with Black-owned media groups to 2%.

“We will increase our spend with this important segment to 4% in 2022, and will continue to grow our spend thereafter with a target of 8% by 2025,” Morrissey said in an email. “We already have the highest diversity media spend in our industry and we believe this furthers that leadership and commitment.”

April 9 Radio History

➦In 1860...Edouard-Leon Scott de Martinville invented the phonautogram to record sound.

Its  earliest known device for recording sound. Previously, tracings had been obtained of the sound-producing vibratory motions of tuning forks and other objects by physical contact with them, but not of actual sound waves as they propagated through air or other media. It transcribed sound waves as undulations or other deviations in a line traced on smoke-blackened paper or glass. Intended solely as a laboratory instrument for the study of acoustics, it could be used to visually study and measure the amplitude envelopes and waveforms of speech and other sounds, or to determine the frequency of a given musical pitch by comparison with a simultaneously recorded reference frequency.

Apparently, it did not occur to anyone before the 1870s that the recordings, called phonautograms, contained enough information about the sound that they could, in theory, be used to recreate it. Because the phonautogram tracing was an insubstantial two-dimensional line, direct physical playback was impossible in any case.

Bob Hope
➦In 1950…Bob Hope began his long association with NBC-TV. Hope's career in broadcasting began on radio in 1934. His first regular series for NBC Radio was the Woodbury Soap Hour in 1937, on a 26-week contract. A year later, The Pepsodent Show Starring Bob Hope began, and Hope signed a ten-year contract with the show's sponsor, Lever Brothers.

He hired eight writers and paid them out of his salary of $2,500 a week. The original staff included Mel Shavelson, Norman Panama, Jack Rose, Sherwood Schwartz, and Schwartz's brother Al. The writing staff eventually grew to fifteen. The show became the top radio program in the country. Regulars on the series included Jerry Colonna and Barbara Jo Allen as spinster Vera Vague. Hope continued his lucrative career in radio through to the 1950s, when radio's popularity began being overshadowed by the upstart television medium

His first appearance on television came in 1932 during a test transmission from an experimental CBS studio in New York.

➦In 1973...Pat St. John started at WPLJ 95.5 FM, NYC.

St. John was born in Detroit and was raised on the music of Motown. In early 1969, at the age of 18, he landed his first gig as a radio personality on Windsor's CKLW, where he also worked for CKLW's 20/20 news doing newscasts one day a week, and part-time booth announcing on CKLW-TV Channel 9. In late 1970 he moved across the border to WKNR and was then hired in early 1972 at the ABC-owned album-oriented rock (AOR) station WRIF until 1973.

In April 1973, St. John began an almost 15-year stint at New York's WPLJ.

For most of his years at WPLJ he was rated by Arbitron as the most listened to afternoon radio personality in America. He survived the station's transition from AOR to top 40 in 1983, and during that era, continued his Arbitron ratings success with that same ranking.

He left WPLJ in 1987, and returned to his rock roots on WNEW 102.7 FM, which had been WPLJ's rival during its AOR years. He became the station's program director in the early 1990s while continuing his mid-day show until being asked to do morning-drive (which he did from 1994 through 1996) and then moved to afternoons where then followed Scott Muni who moved to mid-days). Pat remained with the station until it switched to a hot talk format in 1998.

Today, St. John works for SiriusXM's 60 On 6 channel, based in San Diego.

➦In 1996...WWRL, WNEW Radio and TV NYC personality Sandy Becker died.

Becker was born and raised in New York City.  He held local radio announcing jobs before first reaching public fame on radio as the title character of "Young Doctor Malone".

Originally a pre-medical student at New York University in the 1930s, Becker played the good doctor on radio for a decade.  Then, he started working for Channel 5 TV and became the host of a program featuring Bugs Bunny cartoons, "The Looney Tunes Show" on weeknights from 1955 to 1958. A second Friday night program called "Bugs Bunny Theater" ran from 1956 to 1957. Becker also did television announcing, such as for Wildroot Cream-Oil ads in the television series "The Adventures of Robin Hood."

In the middle of those activities, Becker found his true calling, spun in large part off his knack for entertaining his own three children with his vocal and comic versatility. This led him to his morning show beginning in 1955, and he added a noontime program "Sandy Becker's Funhouse" briefly in 1955. He hosted the syndicated "Wonderama" from 1955-56.

Becker would also host a weekday evening & afternoon children's wraparound show which had him playing comedic characters, performing puppet skits and engaging his viewers in informational segments, contests and interview guest performers and personalities in between the reruns of movie and TV cartoons."The Sandy Becker Show" was seen weekday evening and afternoons from Monday March 30, 1961 to Friday February 16, 1968.

Becker created such characters as double-talking disc jockey Hambone, addled but brilliant Big Professor (who claimed to know the answer to every question in the world), rumpled Hispanic kid's show host K. Lastima, incompetent mad-scientist Dr. Gesundheit, and — showing a remarkable knack for silent comedy — simple-minded Norton Nork, whose routines of earnest bumbling were joined only by musical accompaniment and a droll Becker narration that ended, invariably, with, "That's my boy, Norton Nork — you've done it again!" He also had a real bird in a cage called "Chipper".

Sandy's show was so popular in the NY area that when he began using a version of the Hambone Theme music from an old 78 RPM record by Red Saunders which was recorded in 1952, the Okeh record company re-released the song on a 45 RPM record. Enough kids bought the record that it reached Survey position #22 on local rock radio station WMCA in March 1963. For his show's own theme music, Sandy came to use Guy Warren's "That Happy Feeling" as recorded in 1962 by Bert Kaempfert.

Becker is warmly remembered for the manner in which he handled one of America's deepest tragedies on the air. On November 22, 1963, after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Becker went on the air and, quite movingly, attempted to explain to his young viewers what had happened.

Sadly, most of Becker's programs were not preserved.

➦In 2013…Tampa Bay radio veteran Scott Farrell, who logged more than a dozen years as the midday music host on WFLA 970 AM following a stint at WTCN in Minneapolis, died at the age of 86.

In 1966, the St. Paul, Minnesota native joined 970 WFLA to fill the midday shift and went on to become the morning host, program director, and general manager of WFLA-FM before leaving to do mornings at FM101 WJYW in 1981.

He was a WWII Army vet and earned his degree in broadcasting from Macalester College, a private undergraduate liberal arts college in St. Paul, where he majored in speech and radio. Before moving to Tampa Bay, his early stops included KICD in Spencer, Iowa and WTCN in Minneapolis.

IAB Reports Digital Advertising Increased 12.2%

As the world grapples with the ongoing ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic, the digital advertising sector continues to show tremendous resilience. In fact, according to the newly released "IAB Internet Advertising Revenue Report," conducted by PwC, digital advertising revenues increased by 12.2% in 2020 compared to 2019.

"The second half of 2020 made up for the rather abrupt drop in advertising revenue experienced toward the end of the second quarter," said Susan Hogan, Senior Vice President, Research and Analytics, IAB. "We not only had a rebound, we also had double-digit growth. The Q4 holiday season sales, typical use-it-or-lose-it year-end spending of media budgets, and revenue from political advertising all helped to offset the early Covid-19-induced decline."

Hogan continued, "The surge in consumer adoption of Connected TV, ecommerce shopping, and at-home deliveries created the pendulum swing needed for digital media to continue growing. These are just some of the factors that contributed to ad dollars moving from traditional media to digital media."

Q4 2020 Provides Optimism for the Future, Reports Record High Growth

Although Q2, year-over-year growth declined by 5.2%, revenues in Q3 and Q4 more than balanced the scales, returning positive year-over-year growth of 11.7% and 28.7%, respectively. In fact, Q4 2020 had the highest revenue on record for digital advertising in more than 20 years. The increase in Q4 can be attributed to a number of factors including both advertising dollars flooding into the market for the election and the need to spend 2020 budgets that were paused during the first half of the year because of the pandemic.

Video and Social Media Experienced the Largest Increases Year-Over-Year, Taking Share from Linear TV

Seemingly pandemic proof, social media advertising revenues reached $41.5 billion in 2020. That 16.3% year-over-year growth attributes social media with nearly 30% of all internet advertising revenue (29.6%).

Digital video experienced the greatest increase (20.6% year-over-year) in advertising revenue growth, generating $26.2 billion in 2020. Digital video increased its share of total internet ad revenue by 1.3% year-over-year, reaching 18.7%.

Programmatic Revenue Grew by Nearly 25% in 2020...But Will it Continue as the Addressable Landscape Transforms?

Programmatic advertising revenues increased by $14.2 billion in 2020 (+24.9%). However, the deprecation of 3rd party cookies and identifiers leave many to wonder if this level of growth is sustainable.

"We expected programmatic growth in double digits. Advertisers are using automated buying for more formats now, including CTV. The fact that Q2 2020 saw a shift from performance to mission-based messaging due to COVID-19 accelerated the speed of programmatic adoption for agencies and brands," said Hogan. "However, there is some concern that programmatic delivery could be negatively impacted once 3rd party tracking is blocked."

Majority Of Americans Say They Use YouTube, Facebook

In its debut in a highly regarded study of Americans' social media platform usage, TikTok ranks just behind Snapchat and Twitter, and well ahead of far more established Reddit as a social media destination U.S. adults say they use. That's one of the top-line findings from the just-released 2021 edition of a periodic study of America's social media preferences and habits.

The study also shows that YouTube continues to ascend as most prevalent social media platform in the United States, with 81% of adults citing their usage of it vs. 73% in Pew's last comparable study in 2019.

Facebook remained unchanged at No. 2, with the same percentage of Americans citing its usage (69%), while Instagram (plus three percentage points to 40%), Pinterest (+3 points to 31%), LinkedIn (+1 point to 28%), Snapchat (+1 point to 25%), Twitter (+1 point to 23%), and Reddit (+7 points to 18%), all gained.

In addition to TikTok, Nextdoor makes its debut on the ranking with 13% of U.S. adults citing its usage.

"Despite a string of controversies and the public’s relatively negative sentiments about aspects of social media, roughly seven-in-ten Americans (72%) say they ever use any kind of social media site," the new report notes, adding, "This share has remained relatively stable over the past five years."

According to Mediapost, this year's report is based on a nationally representative survey of 1,502 U.S. adults conducted via telephone in January and February.

In terms of active users, Facebook continues to dominate based on the percentage of Americans citing net daily usage, followed by Snapchat, Instagram, YouTube and Twitter (see below).

Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group has partnered with Verizon on a Black-owned media summit scheduled for May, reports Deadline.

The goal of this new diversity, equity and inclusion initiative is to increase media spending with Black-owned companies based in the United States.

“I’m very proud of Verizon, one of the largest advertisers in the world, coming to the table to make sure we have real economic inclusion for Black-owned media,” said Allen, who is the Founder, Chairman & CEO of Allen Media Group. “The biggest trade deficit in our nation is the trade deficit between corporate America and Black America, and we must close that gap immediately.”

It is also an important step in creating the equity the industry needs.”

Wake-Up Call: U-K Strain Now Dominant In U-S

The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, said yesterday that the U.K. variant of the coronavirus, which is more contagious, is now the dominant strain in the U.S., something experts had predicted would happen. That news came as case numbers and hospitalizations are increasing in the U.S. despite nearly three million people getting vaccinated a day, with Walensky saying the uptick in infections seems to be driven by young people. She said, "Hospitals are seeing more and more younger adults -- those in their 30s and 40s -- admitted with severe disease." Deaths, however, are decreasing, which Walensky said is likely a result of the elderly being vaccinated. Studies have suggested the current vaccines offer strong protection against the U.K. variant.
  • Meanwhile, British authorities recommended yesterday that the AstraZeneca vaccine not be given to adults under age 30 where possible because of growing evidence it may be linked to rare blood clots, particularly in younger people.
➤EXPERT TESTIFIES CHAUVIN PRESSED DOWN WITH KNEE ON FLOYD'S NECK AREA FOR ENTIRE TIME: A Los Angeles Police Department use-of-force expert testified in former Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin's murder and manslaughter trial in the death of George Floyd yesterday, saying Chauvin bore down with most of his weight on Floyd's neck area for the entire nine-and-a-half minutes that Floyd was facedown on the ground with his hands cuffed behind his back. Sergeant Jody Stiger based his analysis on the video evidence of the incident, saying the force used against Floyd was excessive. When Chauvin's attorney pointed to moments in the video when he said the officer's knee appeared to be on Floyd's shoulder blade area or the base of his neck, Stiger agreed his weight may have shifted at times, but said his knee still seemed to be near Floyd's neck.

Stiger did agree with the defense attorney when he said an officer’s actions must be judged from the point of view of a reasonable officer on the scene, not in hindsight. Stiger further said that as Floyd was on the ground, Chauvin squeezed Floyd's fingers and pulled one of his wrists toward his handcuffs, which uses pain to get someone to comply. But Stiger said Chauvin didn't appear to stop even as Floyd had been subdued, saying, "Then at that point it’s just pain."

In other testimony, state forensic scientist Breahna Giles said pills found in the SUV Floyd was driving contained methamphetamine and fentanyl, and forensic chemist Susan Meith said remnants of a pill found in the back of the police car also contained meth and fentanyl. That pill had been found to have DNA from Floyd's saliva. The medical examiner's autopsy had found both drugs in Floyd's system. The lead state investigator in the case, James Ryerson, initially said yesterday that Floyd seemed to say in body-cam video of his arrest, "I ate too many drugs." But when a prosecutor played a longer clip, Reyerson said he believed what Floyd actually said was, "I ain’t do no drugs."

➤BIDEN SAYS OPEN TO COMPROMISE ON HOW TO PAY FOR $2.3T INFRASTRUCTURE PLAN: President Biden said yesterday that he's open to compromise on how to pay for his ambitious $2.3 trillion infrastructure plan, saying, "We'll be open to good ideas in good faith negotiations." However, Biden said not acting isn't an option, stating, "But here's what we won't be open to: We will not be open to doing nothing. Inaction, simply, is not an option." He said America needs to move forward on modern infrastructure, and that we'll lose out to China if we don't, saying, "You think China is waiting around to invest in this digital infrastructure or on research and development? I promise you. They are not waiting. But they’re counting on American democracy, to be too slow, too limited and too divided to keep pace." Biden has proposed that corporate tax increases pay for the plan, reversing some of the cuts they got in former President Donald Trump's 2017 tax bill, which has drawn criticism from Republicans and business groups. There's also been criticism because the infrastructure proposal goes beyond the traditional focus on just roads and bridges.

➤JUDGE..PUBLISHING NUDE PHOTOS OF CONGRESSWOMAN PROTECT BY 1A:  A judge dismissed former Rep. Katie Hill's revenge porn lawsuit against the Daily Mail yesterday, saying the publication was protected by the First Amendment when it ran nude photos of the then-congresswoman in October 2019. The photos, which Hill says were "nonconsensual," were taken by the California Democrat's ex-husband, Kenneth Heslep, who she has charged was abusive. Judge Yolanda Orozco accepted the Mail's argument that publishing the photos was a matter of public concern, writing that the images, quote, "spoke to [Hill’s] character and qualifications for her position, as they allegedly depicted [her] with a campaign staffer whom she was alleged to have had a sexual affair with and appeared to show [her] using a then-illegal drug and displaying a tattoo that was controversial because it resembled a white supremacy symbol that had become an issue during her congressional campaign." The judge rejected Hill's argument that the Mail could have just described the images, saying that the fact that the information could be disclosed in another way doesn't mean the image wasn't of public concern. Hill resigned after the photos were published and it emerged that she'd had a three-way relationship with her husband and a campaign staffer. Hill's attorney argued the ruling allows anyone who calls themself a journalist to do the same thing, which she said could lead to fewer women running for public office.

➤VIRGINIA LATEST STATE TO LEGALIZE MARIJUANA, FIRST IN THE SOUTH: Virginia on Wednesday became the latest state to legalize marijuana, and the first in the South to do so. ➤FORMER REPUBLICAN HOUSE SPEAKER BOEHNER BLASTS TRUMP IN NEW BOOK: Former Republican House Speaker John Boehner, who resigned from Congress in October 2015, blasts former President Donald Trump in his new book, blaming him for the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol. The New York Times, which obtained an early copy of the book, called, On the House: A Washington Memoir, says Boehner writes that Trump, quote, "incited that bloody insurrection for nothing more than selfish reasons, perpetuated by the bulls**it he’d been shoveling since he lost a fair election the previous November." Boehner also claims of his fellow Republican that Trump's, quote, "refusal to accept the result of the election not only cost Republicans the Senate but led to mob violence." He called that Capitol attack "scary and sad" and "one of the lowest points of American democracy."

➤MOST OKAY WITH SLOWER AMAZON DELIVERY IN EXCHANGE FOR TREATING WORKERS BETTER:  Amazon is famous for how quickly it's able to get packages to customers, but amid reporting about mistreatment of its delivery and warehouse workers, a new poll found that most Americans say they'd be okay with slower Amazon delivery in exchange for the online retail behemoth treating its workers better. In the survey of over 1,200 people by GammaWire, more than 67 percent were okay with the tradeoff, with 50.9 percent saying deliveries coming a day or day two later would be alright, and another 16.5 percent saying they'd accept it taking an extra three days or more. Women were more likely to support longer delivery times for better worker treatment, with 77 percent of them saying they'd be okay with it compared to 57 percent of men. Researchers noted, however, that what people say may not actually be true when it comes to reality, saying, "While it can feel good to reply to a survey with a morally superior answer, actually committing to it in practice might be a bigger ask."

➤POTENTIALLY DEADLY ‘ZOOM ZOMBIES’ ARE ROAMING THE STREETS, A NEW REPORT FINDS: It turns out you shouldn’t Zoom and then drive. The Root Insurance Distracted Driving Awareness Survey reveals 54 percent of motorists who have driven soon after using Zoom report having trouble concentrating on the road. The issue seems to be worse the younger the driver is, as 48 percent of Gen Xers reports feeling this way, compared to 61 percent of millennials, and 65 percent of Gen Zers. Root Insurance CEO Alex Timm explains, “COVID-19 fundamentally changed the way we interact with our vehicles. As many abruptly shifted to a virtual environment, Americans’ reliance on technology dramatically increased along with their screen time, causing a majority of drivers to carry this distracted behavior into their vehicles.” Experts say videoconferencing takes more brain power than in-person interactions because you have to pay more attention, and driving takes a lot of this energy as well. To combat this, researchers suggest doing something mindless between videoconferencing and driving, such as laundry, to let your brain recharge.

🎵SCIENCE NOW SAYS YOU CAN JUDGE PEOPLE BY THEIR TASTE IN MUSIC AFTER ALL:  If you’ve judged someone by their music tastes in the past, you should know your judgements may have been legitimate. A new article written in The Hill looks at a few past studies, and notes that one “shows a link between preferred musical genres and our capacity for empathy, with results across samples showing that empathy levels are linked to preferences even within genres.”

They specifically found that those with a bias toward empathizing preferred mellow music that might fall within the genres of R&B and soft rock, while those who prefer genres such as heavy metal or hard rock tend to show a bias towards logic-based thinking, rather than showing empathy. Another study found that self-assured people were more likely to enjoy positive music, while those who seek excitement prefer higher arousal music, and those who are open-minded had a more general preference for music overall, and were also more open to music that spanned genres.

Researcher David Greenberg with University of Cambridge adds, “The idea that music is solely entertainment, or even just a pure aesthetic experience, is very misguided. Music is a form of language. It’s part of human evolution, and it’s deeply embedded into our brains.”

An analysis published Tuesday by The Lancet, shows that more than one-third of people in the United States who survive COVID-19 develop a psychiatric or neurological condition related to the virus within six months of infection. Among those with a psychiatric disorder related to the virus, anxiety was the most common (17% of patients), followed by depression (14% of patients.) Seven percent of patients who experienced neurological complication had a stroke while in intensive care, and two percent were diagnosed with dementia within six months of becoming infected. These diagnoses were more common in COVID-19 patients than in those with flu or respiratory infections over the same time period, suggesting the coronavirus has a specific impact on metal and brain health.

Villanueva blamed the crash on Woods' high speed and loss of control behind the wheel."

Sheriff's Captain James Powers said there was no evidence Woods tried to brake, and investigators believe he may have stepped on the gas instead of the brake in a panic. Woods, who suffered serious leg injuries in the crash and underwent surgery, told police he hadn't taking any medication or drunk any alcohol and detectives didn't seek warrants for blood samples, saying there was no evidence of impairment or distracted driving. Woods also told police he didn't remember driving and didn't know how the crash took place. Villanueva said last week they'd determined the cause of the crash, but needed permission from Woods to release it. He said yesterday that Woods had given it.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said yesterday that the U.S. isn't considering a boycott, stating, "We have not discussed, and are not discussing, any joint boycott with allies and partners."

CBS Shake-Up: Two TV Station Executives Exit

CBS-TV has ousted Peter Dunn, who served as president of the TV Stations group since 2009, and David Friend, senior vice president of news for more than a decade, are no longer part of CBS, the company’s chief executive, George Cheeks, announced Wednesday in an email to staff.

The L-A Times reports the move comes two months after an investigation by the Los Angeles Times alleged that the pair cultivated an environment that included bullying female managers and blocking efforts to hire and retain Black journalists. The Times’ series shined a harsh light on an often overlooked corner of the company that lacks the prestige of the CBS television network but remains a vital source of local news for millions of Americans.

Dunn, who was based in New York, maintained a tight grip on operations of the 28 CBS-owned TV stations, including KCBS-TV Channel 2 and KCAL-TV Channel 9 in Los Angeles, according to interviews and court testimony. Dunn in 2010 promoted Friend, a veteran news executive who oversaw news operations at WCBS-TV Channel 2 in New York, to head of CBS’ local newsrooms across the country.

Dozens of current and former staff members in Los Angeles, Dallas, Boston, Chicago, Miami, Philadelphia and New York have complained of a hostile work environment. Journalists in New York alleged that managers often made news coverage decisions that neglected communities of color. The flagship WCBS station in New York — one of the nation’s most diverse cities — lacked a full-time Black male reporter until March 2020, the same month that Cheeks, who is biracial, took the reins at CBS.

Allegations that Dunn made racist comments about Ukee Washington, a beloved Black anchor at the CBS-owned television station in Philadelphia, struck a chord. Former CBS station managers alleged that Dunn called Washington “just a jive guy” and that Dunn ridiculed the dance moves of the popular anchor, who is a distant cousin of actor Denzel Washington.

The series also raised questions about a $55-million purchase of a TV station on New York’s Long Island — the only station acquisition during Dunn’s 11-year tenure overseeing CBS’ station group. The 2011 deal came with privileges for Dunn and other high-level CBS executives at an ultra-exclusive golf club in the Hamptons, where they hobnobbed with billionaires.

In January, CBS called the Long Island station purchase a “strategic acquisition” that created value by giving the broadcaster two stations in New York, the nation’s largest media market, and that Dunn’s membership was disclosed in advance to senior management and legal counsel.

The Philadelphia Business-Journal reports CBS confirmed the fate of Peter Dunn, president of CBS Television Stations, and David Friend, senior vice president of news for the network’s owned-and-operated stations. The two have been on administrative leave since late January, after the Los Angeles Times reported that former station executives said the two created a hostile working environment at CBS3 (KYW-TV).

The allegations levied by former CBS3 President and General Manager Brien Kennedy and former News Director Margaret Cronan include that Dunn referred to CBS3 news anchor Ukee Washington, who is Black, as “just a jive guy.” He also allegedly asked if the station’s choice for morning anchor was “too gay for Philadelphia” and stated that he “hated” the face of former anchor Rahel Solomon, a Black journalist now working at CNBC.

They were accused of fostering a corporate culture in which female managers were bullied and Black journalists were denied opportunities. CBS placed them on leave while New York law firm Proskauer Rose conducted an investigation.
