June 28 Radio History

➦In 1940...The Quiz Kids was first heard on radio as a summer replacement. Quiz Kids was a radio and TV series of the 1940s and 1950s. Created by Chicago public relations and advertising man Louis G. Cowan, and originally sponsored by Alka-Seltzer, the series was first broadcast on NBC from Chicago  airing as a summer replacement show for Alec Templeton Time.

It continued on radio for the next 13 years. On television, the show was seen on NBC and CBS from July 6, 1949 to July 5, 1953, with Joe Kelly as quizmaster, and again from January 12 to September 27, 1956, with Clifton Fadiman as host.

➦In 1943...the Dreft Star Playhouse debuted on NBC radio. Jane Wyman (the first Mrs. Ronald Reagan) starred in the first broadcast, titled Bachelor Mother. The 21-month series was expensive by radio’s daytime standards, with $3,000 a week budgetted for big name talent.

➦In 1944...The Alan Young Show debuted on NBC radio. It was the summer replacement for the popular Eddie Cantor. The show became a regular in the fall lineup.. on ABC. Young, incidentally, made the switch to TV in 1961. He became a CBS star with a talking horse, of course, of course, named Mister Ed.

➦In 1947…Allen Funt began a lengthy career of catching people in embarassment as “Candid Microphone” began a 15-month run on ABC Radio. It returned to the air on CBS Radio for three months in 1950. The TV version of the concept “Candid Camera” first aired in 1948.

➦In 1951...an old favorite of radio audiences made the switch to TV.  Amos ‘n’ Andy moved to CBS-TV. Two years later, criticism from the NAACP about ‘stereotyping’ forced the network to drop the show.

➦In 1968...Don Imus got his first radio job. Imus was a brakeman on the Southern Pacific Railroad.

Don Imus
After hearing a morning disc-jockey, he went to the nearby radio station and persuaded the owner to hire him. Thus he began his career as a radio disc jockey on June 28, 1968 at radio station KUTY in Palmdale, California.

He stayed at the station until 1969 when he left for a job at KJOY, a small radio station in Stockton, California. He was later fired for saying "hell" on air.

After being fired in Stockton, he went to KXOA in Sacramento, California. His on-air pranks, such as calling up a restaurant and ordering 1200 hamburgers to go, made his show immensely popular and boosted ratings.

In 1970, Imus left KXOA for WGAR in Cleveland, Ohio for a $50,000 salary. In 1971, he won his second Billboard Award, this time in the major radio market category. On December 2, 1971, less than three years into his radio career, Imus started his morning show at WNBC in New York City, with a $100,000 per year salary.

Rick Barber
➦In 1997...George Harrison secretly undergoes surgery to have a cancerous lump removed from his throat. The ex-Beatle will eventually succumb to the disease in 2001. He publicly blamed years of smoking for the illness.

➦In 2013…Longtime Denver radio talk show host Rick Barber died Denver following complications as a result of ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease. Barber was 67. He began his radio work in the 1960s as a teenager in Rhode Island. Barber first came to Colorado and KWGN in early 1970s with positions to follow at KWBZ and KDEN.

Following stints in Wyoming and New Mexico, Barber came back to Denver in 1982 and took a seat in the overnight chair on KOA. "The Rick Barber Show" aired for an unprecedented thirty years ending on 850 KOA in early 2012.

➦In 2015…Radio personality Grady "Doctor" Brock died at age 66.  He had stints at WCFL Chicago, WNOE New Orleans and KAAY Little Rock.

NYC Radio: Red Apple Media to Acquire 77 WABC

Cumulus Media Inc. today announced that it has entered into an agreement to sell WABC 770 AM in New York City to Red Apple Media, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Red Apple Group, for $12.5 million in cash.

Mary G. Berner, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cumulus, said, “Today’s agreement with Red Apple is yet another step in the execution of our portfolio optimization priority to drive Cumulus’s long-term success. Consistent with our financial goals, we intend to use the sale’s net cash proceeds to pay down debt and invest in the Company to better serve our 250 million listeners and the advertisers who want to reach them. We are also pleased that WABC’s excellent team will work with Red Apple following the transaction’s close to continue building this iconic station’s legacy.”

John Catsimatidis
Under the terms of the agreement, Red Apple will take responsibility for programming WABC immediately following the close of the sale, which is expected to occur in the third quarter of 2019.

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approval.

John A. Catsimatidis, Chairman and CEO of Red Apple Group, stated: “I am very pleased that Red Apple Media Inc. has agreed to acquire 77 WABC (AM) Radio.  The station is a real New York legend with a rich history in broadcasting.  I started a radio show five years ago which is now available in 14 states and on the internet; it has gained a large and loyal audience.  Our purchase of 77 WABC (AM) Radio is the next step in building a new broadcasting business, and we look forward to considering the acquisition of more broadcasting assets.  We plan to retain the excellent staff and talent working at the station now and look forward to working with them.”

The sale of WABC leaves Cumulus with one remaining station in New York: WNBM. That station is also expected to be sold as Cumulus exits the market.

FCC Probing Sinclair For Possible 'Lack of Candor'

The FCC is investigating whether Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc. misled the government agency during its unsuccessful attempt to buy Tribune Media Co. last year, reports The Wall Street Journal.

In a June 25 letter to Sinclair, the FCC said it is investigating whether the nation’s biggest owner of local television stations “engaged in misrepresentation and/or lack of candor” with the agency when it was seeking approval for the $3.9 billion deal.

The FCC’s concerns about the deal last spring led Tribune to pull the plug on the agreement.

Nexstar Media Group Inc. then stepped in last December and bought Tribune in a deal valued at $4.1 billion that is still pending FCC approval.

If the FCC determines that Sinclair did deceive the agency, it can order a hearing on the matter. An FCC hearing could lead to significant fines or even the possible loss of broadcast licenses, although such extreme actions are infrequent.

The government probe into Sinclair comes as the company is in the midst of acquiring 21 regional sports channels from Walt Disney Co. for more than $10 billion. That deal requires the approval of the Justice Department.

In the letter, the FCC said it is investigating whether Sinclair’s proposed plans to spin off stations to comply with FCC regulations and receive approval of the Tribune deal would have in fact left the broadcaster in de facto control of the stations.

In the letter, the FCC said Sinclair has until July 9 to respond, warned that “to knowingly and willfully make any false statement or conceal any material fact in responses” to its inquiry is “punishable by fine or imprisonment as well as a violation of the Communications Act.”

One such transaction involved Tribune’s WGN-TV Chicago, which Sinclair said it would sell to car-dealership operator Steven Fader for $60 million. Not only was that price considered far below the station’s value by industry analysts, but Sinclair Chairman David Smith sits on the board of a car-dealership concern where Mr. Fader is chief executive.

The FCC wants similar details about Sinclair’s proposed plans to transfer TV stations in Dallas and Houston to Cunningham Broadcasting, which is run by the estate of Mr. Smith’s mother, Carolyn Smith.

Tech Glitch Marred First Night Of Dem Debate

NBC News’ coverage of the first Democratic debate of the 2020 campaign season Wednesday was marred by a technical glitch that led President Donald Trump to tweet that the network “should be ashamed.”

According to The Associated Press, the snafu, in the middle of the debate, left viewers and candidates confused by crosstalk apparently caused by a failure to turn off the microphones of NBC personalities who had left the stage.

Otherwise, NBC ran a substantive, fast-moving debate that occasionally veered off course, primarily due to 10 candidates eager to make the most of limited time. Ten more Democratic candidates will take to a Miami stage Thursday for a second session, also televised on NBC, MSNBC and Telemundo.

NBC’s technical problem came following a halftime switch from Lester Holt, Savannah Guthrie and Jose Diaz-Balart — who were the primary questioners in the first hour — to Chuck Todd and Rachel Maddow. Todd was interrupted by voices as he tried to direct a gun control question to Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

It caused a brief, uncomfortable period of confusion before Todd switched to a lengthy, unplanned commercial break.

“We prepared for everything,” Maddow said. “We did not prepare for this.”

Following the break, the issue was corrected. But it gave Trump, who had earlier critiqued the debate as “boring,” an opening to attack one of his favorite targets, the news media.

NBC and MSNBC “should be ashamed of themselves for having such a horrible technical breakdown in the middle of the debate.” He called it “truly unprofessional.”

NBC did not have an immediate response to the president.

Report: Auto Sector Dragging Down US Retail Sales

U-S auto and auto parts sales in the US are slowing, which will weigh down the entire retail sector. This year, the auto industry will grow 2.0% to $1.299 trillion, the slowest growth rate since at least 2011. Growth will flatten through 2022, according to eMarketer’s latest US retail forecast.

“US light vehicle sales have been off to a slow start this year and will contribute to the slowdown in the overall US retail market,” said eMarketer forecasting analyst Cindy Liu. “Auto buyers remain hesitant to purchase new vehicles amid uncertainty surrounding the economy and rising interest rates.”

The auto industry—which includes sales of cars, light trucks and auto parts and accessories—represents 23.7% of all US retail sales, making it the largest retail sector. As a result, it has a large impact on the aggregate. Total retail sales in the US will grow 3.0% in 2019 to $5.475 trillion.

“Because auto represents nearly one-quarter of total US retail, any growth or contraction will have an outsized effect,” Liu said. “If we excluded auto from the equation, total retail would actually grow 3.3%, which is pretty healthy.”

As a result, the US auto market will fall from the second-highest digital ad spender to third next year. Automakers and dealers will spend $15.91 billion on digital ads this year, up 15.8% from 2018. That’s a slower growth rate than in previous years.

The auto sector’s share of US digital ad spending has been steadily declining, with that trend expected to continue, as the travel, media and consumer electronics industries take a larger share of the digital ad pie.

FL Radio: WLBE 790 AM Leesburg Goes Silent

The owners of WLBE 790 AM have pulled the plug on the station, which has been a beacon of local information and entertainment for more than 70 years, according to the Daily Commercial.

“It is so sad,” said Andrea Blackston, whose husband, David, hosted a program every Friday at 9 a.m.

There was virtually no notice. A one-line email was sent out last Friday saying that effective Saturday, June 22, WLBE will no longer be broadcasting, said Marc Robertz-Schwartz, president and executive producer of Red Apples Media.

The station was owned by the Harry Reiner Revocable Trust, which was set up in 1979. The trustee is Wendy Wolf of Chappaqua, New York.

Mark Fisher, who had a talk show on the station starting in December, pulled the plug on his own program the first of May.

He said a new manager came in with some “wild changes,” so he contacted the owners.

The station branded itself “Real Country AM 790.”

WLBE 790 AM (5 Kw-D, 1 Kw-N-DA)
Buzzfile.com estimated revenue at $663,275 per year and noted that the station had 12 employees. The license expires in 2020.

Couple that with declining audiences due to FM, satellite, Pandora, Spotify and internet radio, and the problems of owning a station multiply, especially when one considers the cost of staff and legal and technical costs.

WLBE began as WEUS when granted an FCC license in 1947.

NOLA Radio: KLRZ Named New Flagship for NBA Pelicans

The NBA New Orleans Pelicans announced today a multi-year agreement that will make ESPN New Orleans KLRZ 100.3 FM the “Official Flagship Station of the Pelicans.”

“We could not be more excited to begin this new era of Pelicans basketball with our new flagship radio partner and its devoted listening audience,” said Pelicans President Dennis Lauscha. “ESPN New Orleans offers a tremendous daily sports lineup with a significant focus on the Pelicans, along with all of the local professional, collegiate and high school teams. This is an outstanding and natural alliance for our city and region.”

“The excitement of this new era with Zion (Williamson) and the Pelicans begins with ESPN New Orleans being named their new flagship station,” said Coastal Broadcasting Owner Jerry Gisclair. “I want to personally thank the Pelicans organization for having the confidence in ESPN New Orleans to deliver their team to the fans.”

ESPN New Orleans 100.3 FM will broadcast all of the Pelicans’ summer league, preseason, regular season and postseason games. Additionally, the team’s official flagship radio station will be the primary source for future Pelicans radio programming.

The Pelicans radio network of affiliates is currently comprised of several markets across three states – Louisiana (Alexandria, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Northshore, Lafayette); Mississippi (Columbia, Hattiesburg); and Florida (Pensacola) – and continues to expand throughout the Gulf South.

Coastal Broadcasting of Larose, Inc., a family-owned radio broadcast business, has been on the air since 1993 with an emphasis on local high school sports coverage for the past 25 years.

An affiliate of the ESPN Radio network since 2014, ESPN New Orleans delivers daily 24-hour professional, college and high school sports coverage to South Louisiana.

The station’s weekly radio programming consists of local and regional sports talk shows every Monday through Friday including “Off The Bench” with Jordy Culotta and T-Bob Hebert, “The Sports Hangover” with Gus Kattengell, and “After Further Review” with Matt Moscona.

Former San Diego Anchor Sues KUSI for $10 Million

A former longtime news anchor at KUSI has filed a lawsuit accusing the television station of failing to address a pay gap of at least $70,000 between her and her male co-anchor, a dispute that ended with her termination last month.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Sandra Maas is asking for $10 million in relief in the lawsuit filed Tuesday against McKinnon Broadcasting Co. in San Diego Superior Court.

Maas is suing under the California Equal Pay Act, which requires equal pay for employees who perform “substantially similar work” when judging skill, effort, and responsibility.

Sandra Maas
The lawsuit also alleges gender and age discrimination and retaliation.

Maas, who has worked as an anchor in San Diego since 1990, was hired at KUSI in 2004 as a morning co-anchor. She was promoted to evening co-anchor in 2010. She hosted “Inside San Diego” and produced a weekly segment, “Healthy Living.”

According to the complaint, Maas’ suspicion that she was earning substantially less than her male counterpart was affirmed when her former manager told her she was making at least $90,000 less each year.   She began to address the apparent pay inequality starting December 2017 during contract renewal negotiations, according to the lawsuit.

Frustrated by the progress, she filed a complaint in April 2018 with KUSI’s general manager, Mike McKinnon Jr., highlighting her experience and skills and arguing “there is no reason my compensation should be less than multiple male counterparts at KUSI,” according to the lawsuit.

The complaint was not well received, her lawsuit states, and the station’s human resources director intervened in the negotiations. A month later, a contract was offered that was still $70,000 below what she understood her male co-anchor to be making, according to the suit.

Her co-anchor left the station in February, and he confirmed his salary was $70,000 higher than hers, the lawsuit states.

Maas’ last day was June 13, without the usual fanfare, the lawsuit says. She ended the 10 p.m. newscast with a farewell to viewers and the crew, saying: “Although I won’t be delivering the news, I do hope to be making news. And making a difference for women in the workplace.”
