Journalist Admits Writing False News Stories

Europe faces its largest journalistic scandal in years after Der Spiegel, the continent’s biggest-selling news magazine, said one of its star reporters fabricated facts in his articles for years, reports The Wall Street Journal.

Claas Relotius
The magazine’s disclosure, which came after a colleague raised concerns about a recent piece on supporters of President Trump in rural America, was made as Europe’s established media faces attacks by populist forces at home and abroad.

Claas Relotius, an award-winning journalist, resigned from the magazine last week after admitting to making up parts of his reporting in the past decade, Der Spiegel said late Wednesday.

According to the magazine, Mr. Relotius, 33, invented characters, dialogue and events in his coverage of subjects ranging from a Guantanamo inmate who no longer wanted to leave the prison to civil war orphans in Syria.

In seven years writing for Der Spiegel, Mr. Relotius became one of Germany’s most highly regarded journalists, accumulating 10 coveted awards. In 2014, CNN named Relotius the Journalist of the Year and Print Journalist of the Year. The awards were for German-language journalism and decided by an independent jury. The last awards were given in 2015, CNN reported.

But in a separate video interview on the magazine’s website, a colleague said he raised an alarm in November about some facts in an article he and Mr. Relotius co-authored about a pro-Trump militia, which the article described as hunting down immigrants along Arizona’s border with Mexico.

On Wednesday, the magazine launched what it called a transparency campaign, pledging to investigate Mr. Relotius’ entire body of work and publicize the results. It said it had so far found made-up facts in 14 out of nearly 60 articles.

Columbia SC Radio: Longtime Sports Anchor Bob Shields In Hospice

A longtime sports anchor for WLTX-TV19 is receiving hospice care after an 18-month long battle with cancer.

Bob Shields
Bob Shields, 58, who was the station’s sports director for 30 years, had been receiving chemotherapy and radiation since a diagnosis of a cancerous tumor behind his eye, but doctors recently took him off treatment and returned him to his home, according to a longtime friend of Shields.

“Physically he’s not, obviously, doing fantastic. Basically, the doctors have told him that there’s nothing else they can do,” said Benji Norton, a long time friend of Shields’ who hosted a radio show with him from 2007 to 2016 called Early Game.

Despite Shields’ physical state, his mind is still healthy, Norton told The State.

“His mind is sharp as a tack. I was really surprised by that,” Norton said. “He was singing songs and all the lyrics were right, we were messing around with that, bringing up sports things — things you would have to think a little bit to remember.”

Shortly after graduating from the University of South Carolina in 1981, he started working at WLTX. Two years later, he was promoted to sports director, said WLTX general manager and president Rich O’Dell.

“Bob is one of the most loved people who have worked here at WLTX. Not just here, but in the community,” O’Dell said.

Shields is a decorated reporter, who won the South Carolina Broadcasting Association’s award for Sportscaster of the Year three years in a row, 1995-1997. A 2009 article from The State referred to him as a “local sports history guru.” He left WLTX in May 2010 citing personal and professional reasons.

December 21 Radio History

➦In 1965...actor Andy Dick was born in Charleston South Carolina Dick starred as "Matthew" in the TV sitcom "NewsRadio".

➦In 1988...WWPR NYC switched back to WPLJ.

➦In 1996...Barry Gray died.  He was an influential American radio personality, often labeled as "The father of Talk Radio".

Barry Gray 1951
Initially a disc jockey, Gray was working for New York's WMCA radio station in 1945 when he, bored one evening with simply spinning music, decided to put the telephone receiver up to his microphone and share his conversation with the listening audience. The caller that evening just happened to be bandleader Woody Herman, one of the most popular celebrities of the day. This spontanenous live interview was such a hit with both his listeners as well as station bosses, that the talk radio format resulted. Gray subsequently began doing listener call-ins as well.

Rival station WOR also saw the attraction of the talk format, and Gray worked an overnight shift there from 1945 to 1948 or 1949,  interviewing everyone from Al Jolson to Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. He also broadcast for WMGM from the Copacabana night club in the late 1940s.  In addition during 1947 he hosted the New York-based show Scout About Town for the Mutual Broadcasting System, during which he would present an Award of the Week to popular stars of the stage such as Mitzi Green and Morey Amsterdam.

Gray broadcast on WMIE AM radio from three Miami Beach nightclubs, the Copa Lounge, Danny and Doc's Jewel Box and the Martha Ray Club nightly in the fall of 1948 and into 1949 before he left the Miami area under some pressure. Gray bopped someone from his audience with his microphone, and this happened on the air. The impact was audible and the impact had been preceded by hot words of anger.

Barry Gray returned to WMCA in 1950, and stayed there for 39 years, refining the talk show format still utilized today. During the 1960s, he was in the odd position of having an 11 p.m.-1 a.m. late night talk show on a station otherwise dominated by Top 40 music and the youth-targeted "Good Guys" disc jockey campaign.

After WMCA changed to an all-talk format in 1970, Gray was again fully in his element.  By the 1980s he had shifted from a late-night to a mid-day slot at the station.

Gray left WMCA in 1989 when it dropped its talk format, and went to work slightly up the dial for a return to WOR where he enjoyed national syndication. By the time of his death, his show was considered to be politically conservative.

➦In 2009...The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) released its Top 10 list of 2009's most-played holiday songs on U.S. radio stations, representing an aggregation of all different artist versions of each. "Sleigh Ride" was ranked #1, followed by "Jingle Bell Rock," "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year," "White Christmas" and "Winter Wonderland." "The Christmas Song" came in sixth on the list, then "A Holly Jolly Christmas," "Little Drummer Boy," "Feliz Navidad" and "Frosty the Snowman."

In 2017...Hall of Fame sportscaster Dick Enberg, whose “Oh my!” calls rang familiar with so many sports fans,  suffered a fatal heart attack at age 82. During the course of his 60 year career he called games and matches for CBS, NBC, ESPN, as well as UCLA Bruins basketball, Los Angeles Rams football, and California Angels and San Diego Padres baseball.

  • Net loss for the quarter was $13 million versus $38 million in the prior-year quarter
  • OIBDA for the quarter was $72 million versus $60 million in the prior-year quarter
Warner Music Group Corp. today announced that in 2018 its revenue exceeded $4 billion for the first time in company history during its call for fourth-quarter and full-year financial results for the period ended September 30, 2018. It also noted that streaming revenue is up 20.4% (18.5% in constant currency).

“We’ve had another terrific year and revenue exceeded $4 billion for the first time in our 15-year history as a standalone company,” said Steve Cooper, Warner Music Group’s CEO.  “We continue to invest in our business for the benefit of our recording artists and songwriters and to fuel our long-term growth.”

“The fact that we ended the year with over $500 million in cash, despite significant spend on A&R, marketing, M&A and dividends, is evidence of the underlying strength of our business,” added Eric Levin, Warner Music Group’s Executive Vice President and CFO.  “We’re on a great run and I’m looking forward to many more years of success.”

Answering a question about whether streaming revenue will begin to fall off in the coming months, Cooper said he expects it to “grow in a robust way,” noting that it will slow down over time in western countries as saturation begins. In emerging markets, he said, revenues and subscribers are “just now being tapped and I would expect to see growth,” noting that economics will probably be “reduced” by comparison, and “we can expect over a time a more modest trajectory.”

NYC Radio: Laura Walker to EXIT NY Public Radio

New York Public Radio (NYPR) President and CEO Laura Walker will step down from her role, Walker and the NYPR Board of Trustees announced Wednesday, capping a remarkable 23-year career that established NYPR as one of the most important media organizations in the nation, with tremendous growth in listenership and in local and national audio programming.

Walker, who will be pursuing opportunities including a university position and starting her own venture, will remain CEO through March 31, and will be available to assist with the transition to the new CEO through June of 2019. A subcommittee of the Board of Trustees will begin a national search for NYPR’s next leader.

Laura Walker
“Leading New York Public Radio over the last two decades has been the honor of my lifetime. During my time at NYPR, we have grown our audience from 1 million to 26 million monthly listeners, strengthening public radio at a time of great disruption in the media industry, and have become a leading player in the exploding podcasting space. I’m deeply proud of the many programs we have created—from Radiolab, More Perfect, The New Yorker Radio Hour, All of It and On The Media—the capital campaigns that have raised more than $160 million and the many ways we’ve endeavored to meet our mission to ‘make the mind more curious, the heart more open and the soul more joyful.’ I am leaving NYPR well-positioned to continue to do groundbreaking multiplatform journalism and music programming for listeners of diverse backgrounds, in New York, across the country and around the globe,” said Laura Walker.

“Laura Walker took New York Public Radio from its modest beginnings as an independent startup to the internationally-recognized audio and journalism leader it is today. When Laura first took the helm at WNYC’s former home in the New York City Municipal Building, it was hard to imagine that the next 20 years would see a 2,000% increase in listenership, a newsroom expansion from just 3 reporters to 70, a 20-fold increase in annual budget, and the creation of new content—from Radiolab to 2 Dope Queens—heard and enjoyed all around the world. The Board of Trustees will lead a national search for NYPR’s next leader, who can build on Laura’s legacy of innovation and service, continue to advance our mission and forge our next, exciting chapter,” said Board of Trustees Chair Mayo Stuntz.

Under Laura Walker’s leadership, New York Public Radio has been transformed from a City-owned municipal radio station reaching one million people a month to an independent nonprofit with eight radio stations, Gothamist, and 18 nationally distributed programs/podcasts that together reach 26 million people a month. Ms. Walker joined New York Public Radio (then WNYC) in 1996, becoming the newly independent station’s first President and CEO, leading its campaign to acquire the WNYC AM and FM licenses from the City of New York.

Walker’s tenure has been marked by dramatic growth for the organization, including the acquisition of WQXR from The New York Times Company, preserving classical music radio for New York City; a move to new headquarters and the build-out of The Jerome L. Greene Performance Space; the acquisition of four New Jersey public radio stations from the State of New Jersey; and the acquisition of Gothamist. In 2015, New York Public Radio launched WNYC Studios, its national on-demand audio production and distribution arm and has been one of the most influential producers of podcasts since the earliest days of the medium.

CBS Considers Dropping Nielsen Ratings

CBS is considering ending its longstanding contract with TV ratings provider Nielsen as it looks for new ways to measure audiences in the multiplatform universe.

The nation’s most-watched TV network is prepared to drop Nielsen’s measurement services if the two sides can’t come to an agreement by the end of this month, according to Variety citing a person familiar with the matter. CBS’ current contract with Nielsen – valued at more than $100 million a year — expires at year’s end.

CBS senior executives have informed CBS O&O stations and various other business units to prepare in case a deal with Nielsen cannot be reached, this person said. Chances of a breakdown are “not remote,” this person said. CBS is seeking “a competitive rate” from Nielsen given that there are more measurement alternatives available for a marketplace that has moved well past the linear TV ratings that Nielsen has delivered for decades.

A CBS spokesperson declined to comment. A Nielsen rep indicated that CBS’ threat to drop the service was posturing amid tough contract talks.

“We expect to arrive at a mutually beneficial agreement well in advance of Dec. 31,” a Nielsen spokesman said.

At issue is a long-running complaint from TV networks that Nielsen isn’t measuring the many different audiences for their programming as well as it should. As smartphones, mobile tablets and broadband-connected TV’s gain more consumer acceptance, audiences are increasingly able to stream their TV favorites in on-demand fashion, making the task of counting them exponentially more difficult. TV networks have long based their advertising rates on Nielsen’s measure of linear TV audiences, which have slipped as consumers embraced Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and other streaming and on-demand options.

In this environment, TV networks believe Nielsen’s overnight ratings are no longer as reliable a barometer of viewership as they once were.

'Bull' Actress Details Harassment Allegations

Michael Weatherly, Eliza Dushku
Actress Eliza Dushku has slammed CBS and her former “Bull” co-star Michael Weatherly in a scathing story for the Boston Globe that details the allegations of harassment that led to her $9.5 million settlement with the network earlier this year.

“I took a job and, because I did not want to be harassed, I was fired,” Dushku states in the first-person story published on Wednesday.

Variety reports that in addition to the money, Dushku demanded as part of the settlement that CBS send a sexual harassment expert to monitor Weatherly’s conduct on the set. She also asserts she was promised a meeting with Steven Spielberg, head of Amblin Partners, which produces “Bull” with CBS Television Studios. Dushku writes that she has yet to meet with Spielberg.

Dushku says the settlement included a non-disclosure agreement, but that she decided to come forward after reading what she described as “deflection, denial, and spin” from the network, Weatherly, and “Bull” showrunner Glenn Gordon Caron in a report last week by the New York Times on the previously undisclosed settlement. Dushku joined the show at the end of its first season with the expectation of becoming a regular cast member in Season 2. But she was written off the show after three episodes as a result of her clashes with Weatherly.

Dushku writes of experiencing sophomoric behavior from Weatherly that allegedly included him making comments about wanting to have a “threesome” with her and many other sexually charged remarks. When she complained to the studio, Dushku asserts that Weatherly worked to have her fired, accusing her of having a “humor deficit.
