NY Radio: Mark Bolger OUT At WCZX-FM

Mark Bolger
Longtime Hudson Valley radio personality Mark Bolger has signed off for the final time, after being let go by Poughkeepsie-based WCZX Mix 97.7 FM after nearly a decade at the station.

Bolger, a radio host at Mix 97.7 since 2011, has been let go, according to a dailyvoice.com report. His former co-host, Taylor Dickson, has now taken over the morning drive for Hudson Valley motorists.

Bolger was let go on Feb. 9, according to the report. Townsquare Media officials from the station declined to comment on why Bolger is no longer with Mix 97.7.

He’s been a fixture on Hudson Valley radio for decades, having served previous stints at other local station, including a 13-year run at WBWZ.

L-A Radio: KLOS Raises $725K+ For St. Jude Hospital

Cumulus Media announces that its Los Angeles Rock radio station, KLOS 95.5 FM , led by Frosty, Heidi & Frank in the morning, Marci Wiser and Steve Jones (Jonesy’s Jukebox) in middays, and Gary Moore in afternoon drive, raised $725,218 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in the St. Jude Rocks event held Thursday, February 8, through Friday, February 9, 2018.

The two-day live broadcast in Los Angeles capped Cumulus Media’s inaugural “St. Jude Rocks” fundraising partnership across 14 of its Rock-formatted stations in markets across the U.S. The 95.5 KLOS event included on-air, online and text-to-donate promotions and drove donations from listeners in Southern California that set a U.S. Rock radio fundraising record for St. Jude. The funds generated by the 95.5 KLOS St. Jude Rocks Radiothon brought the total dollars raised by Cumulus Media radio stations for St. Jude in 2017-2018 to a record-breaking $2,099,518.

St. Jude and Cumulus have enjoyed a longstanding partnership, generating more than  $22 million over the years to treat St. Jude patients by relying on the power of radio, its personalities and the generosity of local listeners. Like this year’s successful St. Jude Rocks initiative, many times in past years Cumulus stations have come together to support St. Jude patients and families who never receive a bill from St. Jude for the cost of treatment, travel, housing or food.

Dawn Girocco, Vice President/Market Manager, Cumulus Media-Los Angeles, said: “We thank our big-hearted and generous listeners, customers, and team members who stepped up to make a difference for children all over the world who suffer from life-threatening illnesses. Cumulus Media-Los Angeles and 95.5 KLOS is proud to raise awareness and bring people together for such a great cause.”

WAXY 790 AM (5 Kw, DA-2)
“We’re excited to begin a new partnership with Miami Athletics and are ready to air Canes baseball game broadcasts and various shows for fans this spring,” said Keriann Worley, Senior Vice President and Market Manager, Entercom South Florida. “There’s not a better time than right now to be associated with the University of Miami and as part of our commitment to our listeners, we are always looking to bring them the excitement of the games they love.”

The station will produce and air live all broadcasts from the AM 790 The Ticket studios. Joe Zagacki, in his 29th season as the Voice of the Canes, will once again do the play-by-play for baseball broadcasts.

All broadcasts will also be streamed on TheTicketMiami.com as well as on Radio.com.

ABC News Slammed For ‘The View’’s Attack on Christian faith

ABC is facing mounting criticism after its panelists on “The View” mocked Vice President Mike Pence’s Christian faith. Detractors of “The View” are focusing on the fact that ABC News, which claims to be an unbiased broadcast news operation, oversees such a nakedly partisan program with one “token” conservative.

The women of “The View” took a shot at Pence’s Christian faith on Tuesday, mocking the former governor of Indiana for talking to Jesus and even calling it a “mental illness.”

Sunny Hostin said it’s “interesting” that former White House staffer Omarosa Manigault Newman recently said that Pence talks to Jesus and believes Jesus tells him things. Hostin said she is a “faithful” Catholic but doesn’t want her vice president “speaking in tongues.” Joy Behar then said, “It’s one thing to talk to Jesus. It’s another thing when Jesus talks to you… that’s called mental illness.”

The Hill media columnist Joe Concha thinks “it would be wise for ABC News to divorce itself” from “The View.”

“It's a pure opinion and infotainment program and therefore should be under its entertainment division,” Concha told Fox News.

Sharyl Attkisson Explains the Origins of the 2016 'Fake News'

In a Tedx Talk at the University of Nevada a couple of weeks ago investigative journalist Sharyl Attkisson revealed the origins of the "fake news" narrative that was aggressively pushed by the liberal media and Democrat politicians during the 2016 election, and how it was later flipped by President Donald Trump.

PJMedia reports Attkisson pointed out that "fake news" in the form of tabloid journalism and false media narratives has always been around under different names.

But she noticed that in 2016, there seemed to be a concerted effort by the MSM to focus America's attention on the idea of "fake news" in conservative media. That looked like a propaganda effort to Attkisson, so she did a little digging and traced the new spin to a little non-profit called "First Draft," which, she said, "appears to be the about the first to use 'fake news' in its modern context."

Twitter Begins Broadcasting Local TV Breaking News

Twitter is starting to show live, local news broadcasts in a live streaming window next to its timeline during major breaking news events.

Buzzfeed reports Twitter's initiative to air these videos is currently rolled out across the platform, a company spokesperson confirmed to BuzzFeed News. The company will rely on a set of partnerships with local news stations to select the footage.

On Wednesday, Twitter put the initiative into action in a big way, streaming hours of footage from Miami's WSVN 7 next to the timelines of US users as the news station covered the shooting at Broward County's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida.

"We're continuing to work on new ways we can surface credible and relevant information to help people stay informed. By pairing live video with the conversation on Twitter, there is no faster way to see what’s happening in the world," Twitter video GM Kayvon Beykpour told BuzzFeed News in an emailed statement.

The move furthers Twitter's embrace of its role as a media and news company, and is a more natural use of live streaming space for a company that has previously aired obscure live streams like high school basketball and professional bull riding.

Twitter's efforts to promote news contrast with Facebook's recent moves, which have been to deemphasize news content in its News Feed.

Wednesday's broadcast about the Florida school shooting was clearly of interest to a decent number of people using Twitter. It registered more than 50,000 concurrent Twitter viewers at one point.

February 16 Radio History

➦In 1901...‘The Waltz King’ Wayne King was born. In early radio of the 1920`s his band was featured in half-hour`remote` broadcasts from Chicago`s Aragon Ballroom.  In the 1930`s he was heard on the networks in weekly half-hour broadcasts for Lady Esther cosmetics, a line he is credited with popularizing.  In the mid-40`s he was a summer replacement for the Jack Benny and Jimmy Durante programs.  The saxophonist and bandleader died July 16, 1985 at age 84.

Charlie McCarthy, Edgar Bergen
➦In 1903...ventriloquist, actor and radio star (and father of actress Candice), Edgar Bergen was born. With his little wooden ‘sidekicks’ Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd, he delighted audiences for decades.  He had a featured Sunday evening show first on NBC and then on CBS Radio from 1937 to 1955.  He died in his sleep following a performance in Las Vegas Oct 1 1978 at age 75.

➦In 1922...WDAF was started by the Kansas City Star in 1922. The official starting date is open to dispute, because the Star's broadcasting activities pre-dated WDAF.

On February 16, 1922, the Star used WOQ, the station of the Western Radio Company, to broadcast what the newspaper described as a "wireless telephone concert". The Star had just constructed radio studios at its building at 18th and Grand. In that evening's newspaper, the program appeared on the front page:

Courtesy of route56.com
The Star adopted the WDAF call letters May 16, 1922. WDAF bounced around various frequencies, traveling to 750, 730, 680, 820 and 810 kHz. WDAF moved to 610 kHz in 1928, splitting time with station WOQ. WDAF joined the NBC radio network before moving to 610 kHz, running both Red & Blue programs up until 1930, when they became a primary NBC Red affiliate.

It also had become the westernmost affiliate of the NBC Red Network. WDAF retained its NBC affiliation well into the 1960s.

WDAF changed its call letters KCSP on September 23, 2003, after moving the longtime country music format to the FM. Entercom still maintains the WDAF-FM call letters at 106.5. Today KCSP airs Sports Talk.

➦In 1929...KID-AM in Idaho Falls, Idaho, went on the air. Today the station airs a News/Talk format at 590 AM.

The station was first licensed under the call KGIO, and began broadcasting on December 3, 1928 on a frequency of 1320 kHz.  On February 16, 1929, the call was changed to KID, and the station began broadcasting under this call.  The station had moved to 1350 kHz by 1942 (likely in the March 29, 1941 changes, pursuant to the North American Radio Broadcasting Agreement, that saw many stations raise frequency by 10 to 30 kHz), where it stayed for several years.  In 1950, the station changed from 1350 to its current 590 kHz frequency.

➦In 1935...Republican Rep. Sonny Bono of California, who went into politics after first catching America's attention as half of the married singing and TV comedy duo Sonny & Cher, was born. He died in a skiing accident on Jan. 5, 1998 at 62.

➦In 1955...In Odessa, Texas, Elvis Presley performed two shows at the senior high school. Local singer Roy Orbison was in the audience and remembered, "His energy was incredible. His instinct was just amazing."

➦In 1989...Investigators in Lockerbie, Scotland, declared that a bomb, concealed inside a radio-cassette player, was to blame for the destruction of Pan Am Flight 103 the previous December. 259 aboard and 11 on the ground died.

➦In 2010..Voice-Over artist and former WHTZ 100.3 FM /Z100 personality.creative J.R. Nelson died from cancer at age 60.

J R Nelson
He started in 1965, WFOB in Fostoria, Ohio,  "I did everything the usual kid does, run the gospel tapes and all that kind of stuff. By the time I was a senior in high school, I was hired to do mornings at a station in Toledo."

Nelson worked at Top40 CKGM in Montreal in 1970-71. He also worked at KAKA Tulsa, KBEZ Kansas City, WGCL Cleveland, followed by stints at WGAR, WHK/WMMS.

Working for KAKC in Tulsa, is where he started my production company. "I did novelty songs for a car dealer, and these songs ended up being his advertising campaign. I did that same package for about ten car dealers across the country. I think the first station I ever did sweepers for was a little station in Clyde, Ohio."

In '80, he worked with Malrite and helped them set up KNEW in San Francisco, According to a 1993 with Radio&Production magazine, 'By this time, I was your basic, full-fledged cocaine addict. Then I had a mild heart attack. My parents had a little winter home down in Tampa, Florida, so I went down there, dried out, and went to work for a little recording studio there.

After a while, I got a call from an old boss of mine, Gil Rosenwald, saying they were buying this station in Livingston, New Jersey. The studios were in Livingston, New Jersey, but the transmitter was in Newark, and they were going to move to the Empire State Building. He wanted to know if I wanted to go work for them. I said, "Who's your PD?" He said, "Scott Shannon." Well, I knew Scott from Tampa, and Scott and I were two people just alike -- two stubborn, bull-headed people. The station was Z100, and we had a lot of fun."

"We were there for about three months before we actually signed the thing on, going through tapes, building the studios, etc.. I didn't want to be on the air. I was just going to do creative for them. Then, about a week before we were going to sign on Scott said, "Well, did you ever read news?" And I said, "I've never read news in my life!" and he said, "Well, you're going to start now." Oh, it was nice. It's your first time trying to be a news person, and where are you? In New York City. It's a humbling experience, but I only had to do news until we hired someone. Anyway, everybody did everything they had to do in the beginning. The production part to me was the most fun because we had a ball at that station."

➦In 2015...Lesley Gore, the teenaged singer of 60’s hits like “It’s My Party,” “Judy’s Turn to Cry” and “You Don’t Own Me,” lost her battle with lung cancer at age 68.

Boston Radio: WEEI Hits Mute For Sensitivity Training

WEEI 93.7 FM has canceled its live programming Friday in order for its full staff to participate in sensitivity training, a response to the advertiser backlash to a host mocking Tom Brady’s agent with a stereotypical accent last week, reports to boston.com.

“Nothing is more important to WEEI than the close-knit and diverse Boston community we call home, and we are committed to actively contributing to its betterment,” a statement issued by the station and parent company Entercom Communications read.

“WEEI is in the process of closely reevaluating our policies and procedures in an effort to ensure that our programming is never intolerant or harmful to our listeners and our city.”

Christian Fauria, a midday host on WEEI’s Ordway, Merloni and Fauria program, was suspended for five days after mocking Yee with a racially insensitive Asian accent while the hosts were discussing reporter Ron Borges’s erroneous story in Friday’s Boston Herald.

Borges was duped by a sports radio listener pretending via text to be Yee, telling him that Brady would skip the Patriots’ offseason organized team activities unless he was paid like Garoppolo, his former backup. Garoppolo  signed a five-year, $137.5 million contract with the 49ers last week.

Fauria, during a “dramatic reading” of the Borges/Yee texts on Friday’s program, said, “I’m gonna be Don Yee. For me, I don’t know why, Don Yee sounds like an Asian guy.” He then commenced reading the lines with an over-the-top Asian accent. His co-hosts laughed.

Eventually, the show played audio of the real Don Yee talking. He is of Chinese descent, but he was born in Sacramento, Calif., and does not speak with any distinct accent.

In the fallout over the past week, WEEI has had at least five advertisers, including Comcast Corp., Citizens Bank, and the Massachusetts State Lottery, suspend or terminate commercial purchases with the station.

Maura Healey
Meanwhile, The Boston Globe reports Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey says she supports the growing number of advertisers fleeing WEEI and that no state money should be spent for ads on the sports radio station in the aftermath of its recent controversies, unless they make “some changes.”

“I think it is significant that you see a lot of advertisers pulling out and making a decision with their wallets right now, recognizing that there’s a real movement on to take this out of the discourse,” the Massachusetts attorney general said in an interview Wednesday on WGBH’s Boston Public Radio.

“This isn’t the first time that EEI has found themselves in the midst of criticism over things that they’re radio hosts have said,” Healey said Wednesday, alluding to the radio station’s long history of controversies and inflammatory remarks. “That goes back awhile.”

“You don’t need to be making comments in the course of that that are racist or derogatory towards women, towards minority, or the like,” she said, later adding, “But I think now you see them paying the price for that.”

Healey said Wednesday that her office doesn’t have an advertising budget, but that the Health Connector and State Lottery were right to pull their ads. Asked if any state money should be spent on advertising on the station, the attorney general said not “until and unless they make some changes.”

Boston Radio: Money Talks..WEEI Listens

In an unprecedented move, Entercom execs are pulling the plug on WEEI’s live programing tomorrow so the sports station’s button-pushing talk jocks can undergo sensitivity training after several advertisers jumped ship.

“It’s a matter of the corporate world of broadcast media colliding with the politically incorrect culture of sports talk radio,” Michael Harrison, publisher of Talkers Magazine told The Boston Herald. “I salute Entercom for the effort. However, sensitivity training for sports talk hosts is like teaching NFL players how to tackle gently.”

WEEI plans to suspend live programming from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow so all employees can take part in the training.

Bruce Mittman, president and CEO of Mittcom, an advertising agency in Boston, said Entercom “is probably trying to shore up losses in revenue and make a statement to the community” that boorish behavior won’t be tolerated.

The radio silence is the culmination of a horrendous stretch of bad PR for the embattled sports powerhouse.

Last month, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady abruptly hung up on hosts Kirk Minihane and Gerry Callahan, threatening to end his weekly WEEI interviews after yakker Alex Reimer called Brady’s 5-year-old daughter an “annoying little pissant.” Reimer was indefinitely suspended.

Last week, midday host Christian Fauria was suspended for five days for mocking Brady’s agent, Don Yee, using a fake Asian accent. The racist banter came during a bit about Herald writer Ron Borges, who wrote a column based on bogus information he was given as a prank by a WEEI listener.

S-F Radio: KNBR Fires Host For Sexually Suggestive Comment

Patrick Connor
San Francisco sports radio host Patrick Connor  has been fired by KNBR 680 AM Wednesday after making a series of sexually suggestive comments about 17-year-old U.S. Olympian Chloe Kim, FoxNews reported.

Patrick Connor called Kim a “little hot piece of a--" after her gold-medal win on Tuesday, during a conversation on Barstool Radio's Sirius XM show "Dialed-In with Dallas Braden."

She's fine as hell," Connor said on the program, while speaking with former MLB player Dallas Braden and comedian Brody Stevens.

"If she was 18, you wouldn't be ashamed to say that she's a little hot piece of a--," he continued. "And she is. She is adorable. I'm a huge Chloe Kim fan."

Connor then appeared to reference the movie "Dazed and Confused."

"Her 18th birthday is April 23, and the countdown is on baby, 'cause I got my Wooderson going," Connor said. "That’s what I like about them high school girls."

While he will no longer host "The Shower Hour with Patrick Connor" on KNBR, Connor remains employed by Barstool, USAToday reported.

The host, known as "P-Con," apologized on Wednesday, shortly before news of his termination from KNBR was announced.

Last year, ESPN pulled the plug on its new show “Barstool Van Talk” after just one episode, citing concerns about Barstool's "site and its content."

Boston Radio: Kirk Minihane On The State of Sports Radio

WEEI 93.7 FM Hosts
Boston Talk Show Hosts Kirk Minihane and Bill Simmons discussed the state of sports media in Boston, the structure of sports talk radio, and the recent controversies involving WEEI on a podcast Tuesday, according to The Boston Globe.

In the past two weeks, WEEI hosts have been suspended for calling Tom Brady’s 5-year old daughter an “annoying little pissant” and using a racially stereotyped Asian accent to mock Brady’s agent, Don Yee. After several companies pulled their advertisements, the station released a statement Wednesday responding to the criticism. WEEI said it is suspending live programming for 12 hours on Friday so that all employees can attend mandatory sensitivity training, as well as reevaluating policies to “ensure that our programming is never intolerant or harmful.’

On The Bill Simmons Podcast, Simmons asked Minihane about the controversies (“Listen, I’ve been suspended five times in the past six years so I’m not really one to pass judgement”) and the structure of sports radio in general.

Minihane, co-host of ‘Kirk & Callahan’ on WEEI, said that the four-hour long morning show is mischaracterized as strictly a sports talk show. Minihane explained that he and his cohost, Gerry Callahan, focus on the issue of the day that sports fans are most likely to be talking about.

“We definitely tap into the anger and into the passion,”Minihane said.

Listen..starting at the 1:01 time mark...

Simmons, CEO of The Ringer and a Boston native, had criticized the local media for the string of controversies they’ve been involved in, tweeting Saturday, “The sports media has been embarrassing the city for 3 solid decades, it sucks.”

‘Kirk & Callahan’ regularly tops the morning-drive Nielson ratings, and the show’s star attributed the negativity on the station’s airwaves to the mood of the city itself.

Boston Radio: 'On Point' Host Tom Ashbrook Fired

Tom Ashbrook
Tom Ashbrook, the host of WBUR’s call-in radio program On Point, with more than two million listeners through more than 290 National Public Radio stations, will not be returning to WBUR.

Boston University, which operates WBUR, reached this decision after an independent review verified claims that he had created an abusive work environment. Ashbrook has been on leave during the inquiry.

That review, conducted by Longpoint Consulting, is one of two inquiries launched by BU after allegations by 11 men and women who previously worked at On Point were brought to the attention of WBUR management and the University in December. On Point staffers alleged that over the course of many years, Ashbrook had created a work environment that included verbal assaults, intimidating actions, consistent bullying, and unwanted touching.

The second investigation, conducted by the law firm of Holland & Knight, was asked to determine if Ashbrook had violated BU’s Sexual Misconduct/Title IX policy by sexually harassing female members of his staff. That inquiry found that Ashbrook’s unwelcome conduct was not sexual in nature, and did not constitute sexual harassment under the school’s Sexual Misconduct/Title IX policy.

The investigators from both firms talked with about 60 people, including those who made complaints, other current or past On Point employees, station management, and Ashbrook himself. And while both teams looked into different complaints—the alleged creation of an abusive work environment and the possible violation of BU’s Sexual Harassment/Title IX policy—both described the deleterious effect that Ashbrook’s conduct had on the On Point staff. Both reports also stated that WBUR management was aware of Mr. Ashbrook’s behavior and repeatedly talked with him about it, but was unsuccessful in changing his behavior.

“We were struck by the common themes that appeared in both reports,” says Gary Nicksa, BU senior vice president for operations. “On Point employees expressed enormous pride in the program and they recognized that along with everyone else, Mr. Ashbrook was under a great deal of pressure to make sure that the two-hour daily program was perfect. But the employees also described ways in which Mr. Ashbrook consistently overstepped reasonable lines and created a dysfunctional workplace in the process.”

Charlie Kravetz, general manager of WBUR, says the investigations’ findings suggest that the damage done by Ashbrook cannot be mitigated, and that Ashbrook should not return to the program.
